IDALIA SCHOOL DISTRICT RJ-3 JOINS LIVEWELL COLORADO’S EFFORTS TO
EXPAND NUTRITIOUS AND DELICIOUS SCHOOL MEALS
The IDALIA SCHOOL DISTRICT RJ-3 is among a select group of school districts in Colorado
that has accepted the LiveWell Colorado challenge to provide more freshly prepared school lunches. Over the next two years, IDALIA SCHOOL DISTRICT RJ-3 will receive assistance from the
LiveWell@School Food Initiative to offer more menu items that are made from scratch, right in
Idalia’s kitchens. In addition, the district will receive kitchen equipment, free culinary training, and
on-site support from a LiveWell Colorado chef consultant.
For this initiative to be successful, school food directors need the support of parents, students and
staff. Staff and families are encouraged to be a part of the healthy meal enhancements by trying
the new menu items, sharing feedback and ideas and joining the school food advisory team.
The goal of the LiveWell@School Food Initiative is to make it easy for kids to make healthy lunch
choices. LiveWell Colorado recognizes the key role of the food service director as well as of parents, students, staff and the entire community in ensuring the success of this effort.
Research also proves that when kids eat a balanced diet, they are better able to focus on academics
and extracurricular activities. IDALIA SCHOOL DISTRICT RJ-3 is very excited to be participating in this initiative and looks forward to serving meals that are both good for students and taste
good,” says Griselda Cano, says Head Cook/Director for the Idalia School District. “It’s going to
take some time and effort to complete the process, but it’ll be worth it because it’s the right thing to
do for our kids.”
LiveWell Colorado is a nonprofit organization. Its LiveWell@School Food Initiative was launched
with funding and support from the Colorado Health Foundation. The goal of the LiveWell@School
Food Initiative is to ensure all children in Colorado have access to and choose healthy food at
school by 2022. For more information, visit www.livewellcolorado.org

LiveWell Colorado’s School Food Initiative Program
Idalia is one of many lucky schools to participate in LiveWell Colorado’s School Food Initiative program, which
began this past spring. Chef Jessica will be working with our kitchen staff for two
years, continuing to increase their skills and support changes to the food program at
our school. Jessica reported: “I am extremely excited about my time with Idalia School.
I’ll be working with the District over the next two years providing sustainable systems
and culinary trainings to lead the staff towards more from-scratch items being offered.
If there is one piece of advice that I can offer, it is that creating sustainable change
takes time. I do feel confident that with the support Idalia already has; we will be able
to do great things for your District! I thank you in advance for your support and look
forward to spending time at Idalia School!”
We appreciate your support and encouragement as we sample a variety of enhancements to our expanding
menu. Submitted by Lynne Cody, Health & Wellness

IDALIA VOLLEYBALL ROLLING
The Idalia Lady Wolves' volleyball team is excited to start a new year and new season. We have
16 girls out for volleyball this year: four seniors, three juniors, five sophomores, and four freshmen. Our first game will be on Thursday, September 1 in St. Francis. On Friday, September 2, we
will host Mr. Johnson's (our principal) hometown team, the Kit Carson Lady Wildcats. As seniors, we can't wait to
see what's in store for this season. We lost 4 seniors last year who contributed a lot to the team, however, all of the
younger classmen have stepped up to fill their shoes. We all hope to see you at our games to help cheer us on to
another trip to the state tournament! Submitted by Faith Carpenter and Alex Weyerman

Idalia Health & Wellness, with support from a
grant from Safe Routes to Schools, is proud to
announce a monthly event called “Ride’n’Stride”!
Beginning September 15, and monthly in acceptable weather conditions, our school buses will
meet behind the Outback, where
volunteers & staff members will
walk with them the few blocks to
school. This was started last
spring and met with resounding
student and (staff) approval.
It is just one more way for students to enjoy our
beautiful Colorado weather and
work out the “wiggles” before
beginning their day.
To further this great idea, Idalia
School will join over 420
schools across the country in
celebrating National Walk to School Day. Please
feel free to bring your students to the Outback
and walk with us during this, or any other, walking
event! Submitted by Lynne Cody, Health & Wellness
Ms. Mann has a “Thing 1” and
a “Thing 2” costume from Dr.
Seuss's book, The Cat in the
Hat, that was borrowed from
someone. If it is yours, please
let her know.
Community Support
is Needed
Are you aware of the amount of
scholarships that our high school
students and continuing education
students receive from the Idalia
Vision Foundation Continuing
Education? All profits from the
drink and snack machines and the
use of Safeway and King Soopers
gift cards are used to fund scholarships for students who apply for
them.
Purchasing and using Safeway
and King Soopers reloadable gift
cards is very easy. Individuals
buying these cards need to reload
them at the register for whatever
amount they choose. Loading this
card can be done by using your
credit card, check, cash or debit
card. The card is swiped just like
a credit or debit card. These cards
can be used to purchase fuel at
Safeway or King Soopers as well
as merchandise. You can still use
your store card to get store discounts. Safeway and King Soopers donate 5% of all money that is
used to load these gift cards to the
Continuing Education program.
Profit from the King Soopers and
Safeway gift cards totaled $956 in
2015. That money was used towards scholarships. We call that
money ‘free money’ because it is
money that is donated back to us
from the use of the gift cards.
The Continuing Education committee challenges you to help us
double the amount we received in
2015 for the upcoming students
that apply for our scholarships in
2016. It is easy to purchase a reloadable gift card and use it at
either of the two participating
stores. Initial cost of each card is
$10 which is already added to the
card for you to use. Checks need
to be written to Idalia Vision Continuing Ed. and can be purchased
at the school office.
Our funding for scholarships has
been lowered so we need your
help more than ever in order to be
able to help fund scholarships.
Perhaps your child has received
a scholarship from the Continuing
Education in the past; or maybe
you have a child that will be eligible to receive a scholarship in the
future. Wouldn’t this be a great
way to show your appreciation for
that scholarship by supporting this
program? Submitted by Deb Crites,
Idalia Continuing Education
Lenae Lengel is the new kindergarten teacher replacing Amber Soehner. She feels it
is a blessing to finally be a full-time member of the Idalia community. She and her husband
Brian have been hoping to return to the community since they were married a little over nine
years ago. They made the move with their children: Grady-6, Emelyn-3, and Teegan-18
months. She grew up in Wray, Colorado, and attended UNC in Greeley for both her Masters’
and Bachelors’ training. After graduation, she spent five years teaching fourth grade in Johnstown, Colorado. Then, for the last three years, she was fortunate enough to stay home with
her children. This year she gets to split her time as the kindergarten teacher and elementary
interventionist. When she does find a few moments of spare time, she enjoys cooking and
baking, crafting, and a good read.
Myles Johnson is the new principal and grew up on his family's cattle ranch near Kit Carson. He played
6-man football, basketball, and ran track while in high school. Upon graduating from Kit Carson, he attended
Colorado College in Colorado Springs, where he was also a member of the basketball team. After college, he
began work at Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs where he taught Social Studies and
coached football and basketball for four years. In 2014, he accepted the administrative role of Dean of Students
at Cheyenne Mountain High School.
Myles is married to Katie who grew up in Denver and does accounting work for USA
Archery. Outside of education, some of his interests include playing and watching
sports such as golf and basketball, riding horses, roping, reading, and traveling.
Mr. Johnson says and he and Katie are very excited to join the community of Idalia
and look forward to getting to know everyone during the upcoming school year.
Karen Pariset is the new 3rd grade teacher replacing Trudi Wieser. She was originally an Otis Bulldog and
has attended many sporting events here in Idalia back in the 1980’s. She has lived in the Vernon area for the past
15 years. During that time she and her husband raised their three children, 1 girl and twin boys. Meggan (25)
lives in Utah, Matthew (20) going to school at Aims Community College in Greeley for a Welding degree.
Greggory (20) attended Red Rocks Community College last year for a degree as an Electrician. He is currently
working for AC Electric building up some hours for his certification. She is also the proud grandmother of a 22
month old little guy, Kaiden.
Teaching has always been her first love but is her second career. She started out
as an Airline employee for a small commuter company. Upon getting married she
moved back to Yuma County. Shortly thereafter she continued working on her education through Morgan Community College and Regis University. She began
working for Wray School District in 1989 as a para and then was transferred to
Office Administration before working on her teaching degree. She started teaching
in the Third Grade Classroom in 2002 with her official teaching license. During her
time in Wray, she taught 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, Art K-4, Special Education K-12, Title1 and Reading Interventions. In
2014, she completed her Master’s Degree in Reading Instruction and Curriculum from Grand Canyon University.
The 2015-2016 school year was a change for her. She said goodbye to Wray Schools and began substituting for
Adams 12 in the Thornton area. During her time there she worked in 30 different schools—K-6. What an experience! City schools have NOTHING over country schools!!!
She is now an employee for Idalia School District. Third grade is her favorite class to teach as SHE LOVES
watching the children Read to Learn. She is very excited to be here and begin the school year together.
Idalia is honored to have two ladies attending school through the
exchange student program. Bodil Cedersted is from Glostrup,
Denmark, and is staying with Lynne and Kane Cody. Our second
exchange student is Giulia (pronounced Julia) Orsenigo from Milan, Italy, is and is residing with Jess and Kevin Andrews. Both
young ladies are sophomores and are even playing volleyball.
Pictured left to right are Bo and Giulia.
