The Lady
in the Van
Son of Saul
Looney
Tunes
Mustang – May 1-7
In the early summer in a northern Turkey village, Lale and her four sisters
are walking home from school and playing innocently with some boys –
which sets off a scandal with unexpected consequences. The family home
is transformed into a prison, and marriages start being arranged. The five
sisters, who share a common passion for freedom, find ways of getting around
the constraints imposed on them. Turkish with subtitles PG-13/97 min
City of Gold – May 15-20 and 22 - 24
Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold shows us a Los Angeles
where ethnic cooking is a kaleidoscopic portal to the soul of America.
Piping-hot platters are served up with stories of immigrants whose secret
family recipes are like sacred offerings pledged for the opportunity to build
their American Dream. Gold will inspire you to discover the culinary gems
within your own community. R/96 min
The Lady in the Van – May 1-14
Alan Bennett’s memoir is based on the true story of Miss Shepherd (played by
Maggie Smith), a woman of uncertain origins who “temporarily” parked her
van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years.
What begins as a begrudged favor becomes a relationship that will change
both their lives. Filmed on the street and in the house where Bennett and
Miss Shepherd lived all those years. PG-13/104 min
The Guns of Navarone – May 22 and May 29
The guns of Navarone are huge Nazi cannons, installed on an Aegean island
behind enemy lines. Anthony Quayle is the officer assigned by the British to
lead a task force to put the guns out of commission. When Quayle is injured,
the mission winds up in the relatively inexperienced hands of Gregory Peck.
Son of Saul – May 1 - 6 and May 8 - 12
Saul is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, a group of
Jewish prisoners forced to help the Nazis in the machinery of large-scale
extermination. While working in one of the crematoriums, Saul discovers the
body of a boy he takes for his son. He decides to save the child’s body from the
flames, find a rabbi to recite the mourner’s Kaddish, and offer the boy a proper
burial. Hungarian, Yiddish, French, German with subtitles. R/107 min

mathematics takes him from the slums of India to Cambridge University
in the early 20th-century. Spurred on by his mentor, G. H. Hardy (Academy
Award winner Jeremy Irons), Ramanujan overcomes racism and the rigidity of
academia to revolutionize the field with his startlingly original theorems.
PG-13/ 108 min.
The Bridge on the River Kwai – May 15 and May 28
After settling his differences with a Japanese POW camp commander, a

My Italian Secret: The Forgotten Heroes – May 24-29
Gino Bartali was a charismatic Italian sports idol legend and Tour de
France cycling champion, whose role in history was never revealed in his
lifetime. Bartali’s most daring triumph came when he repeatedly risked his
life to transport fake identity documents in the frame of his bike for a secret
underground working to save Jews threatened by Nazi extermination.
Doc/92 min
Race – May 25-31 and June 1- 3
Based on the incredible true story of Jesse Owens, whose quest to become
the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world
stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler’s
vision of Aryan supremacy. “Race” is an enthralling film about courage,
determination, tolerance, and friendship, and an inspiring drama about
one man’s fight to become an Olympic legend. PG-13/134 min
45 Years – May 30 - June 8
Screen legends Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay star as Kate and
Geoff, a couple preparing to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary when
a stunning revelation changes everything. Consumed with questions about
her husband’s past, Kate reconsiders everything she’s known about her
entire marriage and finds herself at a potentially life-changing crossroads.
R/95 min
The Goonies – May 31- June 1, 2, 4, and 6-8
The Goonies are seven young friends from a small Northwestern town who find
themselves on a thrilling underground adventure filled with humor and heartpounding peril as they seek the secrets behind the treasure of the notorious
pirate One-Eyed Willie. Written by Steven Spielberg. PG/114 min/1985.
Tickets $4 per person.
Back to the Future – June 9, 14-16, 21 & 22
A young man is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling
DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown. He must make sure his
high-school-age parents unite in order to save his own existence. Starring
Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. PG/116 min/1985
Born to Be Blue – June 7- 17
Ethan Hawke lights up the screen as jazz legend Chet Baker. In the 1950s,
Baker was one of the most famous trumpeters in the world, renowned as both
a pioneer of the West Coast jazz scene and an icon of cool. By the 1960s, his
career and personal life were in shambles due to years of heroin addiction. In
his innovative anti-biopic, director Robert Budreau zeroes in on Baker’s life at
a key moment in the 1960s, just as he attempts a comeback. R/97 min
To Kill a Mockingbird – June 19
Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck), a lawyer in the Depression-era South,
defends a black man against an undeserved charge, and his kids
against prejudice. Based on Harper Lee’s 1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning
novel of the same name. NR/129 min/1962.
Marguerite – June 27-July 8
City of Gold
To Kill a Mockingbird
Marguerite
Marguerite genuinely loves her husband, Georges, and her horribly
misplaced musical ambition is to make him proud. Her musical
social circle is aware she lacks any singing talent but enjoys her
lavish hospitality. Avant-garde poets and performance artists hijack
her bizarre renditions for their own ends; others simply haven’t the
heart to break hers by telling her the truth, especially as she’s helping
raise money for war orphans in 1920s Paris. French with subtitles.
R/129 min/2016.
The Guns of Navarone
My Italian Secret
Classic Jonny Quest Cartoons (1964) – June 18 & 25
If you grew up during the early James Bond movie era, then you also grew up with Jonny Quest.
Enjoy these before you dive into a Bond double feature.
Famed cartoon producers Hanna and Barbera watched Dr. No and decided to create a cartoon based along the same
premise. With comic artist Doug Wildey, they brought the dark lines and comic book sense of style to television cartoons.
It was the first cartoon to air on all three TV stations, held a Friday evening time slot and a 21 piece big band jazz
ensemble creating all music scores. The recurring “SPECTRE” like nemesis in the cartoon series was Dr. Zin. FREE
Mystery of the Lizard Men at 10:00 am
First episode aired 9/18/1964. Notice Dr. Quest’s government file #037, similar to #007. While investigating ship
disappearances, Dr. Quest discovers a secret laser base hidden aboard an old shipwreck.
Jonny Quest
The Robot Spy at 10:30 am
Dr. Zin, sends a giant, cyclops, robot spider to a U.S. government research facility to steal ray gun secrets from Dr. Quest.
The Fraudulent Volcano at 11:00 am
While investigating volcanic eruptions on a tropical island, Dr. Quest discovers a secret ray gun base, operated by his
nemesis, Dr. Zin and protected by hovercraft-mounted guards.
