Trips for Kids News I N T E R N A T I O N A L I S S U E O C T O B E R 2 0 1 4 TFK SUPPORTS OUR CHAPTERS For the third year, TFK® International granted a total of $38,000 to our qualifying chapters. Each grantee received up to $1,200 to use to benefit their participants, and/or to attend the International Mountain Biking Association Summit. “Our chapters have served over 127,000 youth since our inception” "Every dollar counts when you're running a grass roots program serving at-risk kids," said Bernie Rupe, executive director of TFK Chicago Voyagers. "The grants we’ve received from TFKI have helped us purchase key equipment and enabled us to triple our program. We are grateful to TFKI and industry sponsors for their ongoing support." TFKI grants are funded by proceeds from the sale of over-stocked, out-of-date, or used items generously donated by corporate sponsors across the cycling and outdoor industries, and sold at TFK’s Re-Cyclery Bicycle Thrift Shop. "Thanks to the annual contributions from our industry sponsors, we can continue our support and put more kids on bikes." UNIVERSALITY & DIVERSITY OF TFK As Trips for Kids® celebrates its 26th successful year, we contemplate our goals and achievements. Why are there dozens of successful chapters in the US and internationally? Why have we so successfully given opportunities to thousands of kids? The answer, of course, is bikes and nature. The bike is universally loved. It transports, challenges, and enhances health and well-being. Nature is the universal restorer; its regenerative powers are the stuff of legends. When we combine bikes, nature and kids, magic happens. Lives are transformed. It happens every day, every year, in every TFK chapter, no matter where it’s located or who the kids are. Year after successful year we experience the incredible power of this simple combination to profoundly change lives for the better - in all of us. Ready, set, let’s go RIDE! REMEMBERING ROBIN WILLIAMS Donate To 6 TFK & How to Start a TFK Chapter Robin & Marilyn at TFK’s 20th Anniversary Robin Williams, a Marin County native and honorary Trips for Kids board member for over twelve years, brought his passion for cycling, his generosity and his star power to help Trips for Kids grow and prosper. A frequent rider of our local trails and roads, he believed in the power of bicycles to change lives and inspired everyone - on the bike and off - who was fortunate enough to come in contact with him. Even with his busy life, Robin attended Trips for Kids fundraisers and visited us many times at the Marin Re-Cyclery where he donated items in support of our cause. He was loved by all of us at Trips for Kids – we will miss him terribly. PAGE 2 Trips for Kids Success Stories up Using the simple bicycle, Trips for Kids® chapters around the world provide life-changing opportunities for kids day after day, week after week. We’d like share a few inspiring highlights with you. TFK Ottawa kids after a great ride There are more than 80 TFK® chapters in the US, Canada, Israel and Africa Alabama Alberta New Mexico New York Arizona British Columbia California North Carolina Nova Scotia Ohio Colorado Florida Georgia Oklahoma Ontario Oregon Illinois Kansas Kentucky Pennsylvania Rhode Island Tennessee Maine Massachusetts Michigan Texas Utah Washington Minnesota Missouri Nevada West Virginia Wisconsin TFK Charlotte: “Three brothers rode with us nearly every Saturday,” said TFK Director Paula Fricke. “Their foster-caregiver emailed us: ‘The boys and I worked in the yard and had to put their bikes in the driveway to get them out of the way. One of the boys woke me up around 11PM that night saying he was worried about the bikes and was going out to move them to the backyard and lock them up. I was very proud of him and surprised. That bike means more to him than most folks probably realize. It is the first thing in his life that he earned that was not stolen from him or taken away.’" TFK WNC: “It’s a two-minute walk that might as well be 100 miles away without TFK WNC program.” said the I Have a Dream Foundation Director. It’s an incredible part of our program, and it really does enrich what we’re doing. The vast majority don’t even own bikes. They really love the opportunity to ride every week, and it is great exercise as well.” “Riding a bike is a sense of freedom,” TFK WNC’s Director Stephen Janes said. “It teaches confidence and respect. It broadens their horizons and makes them realize there is more out there in the world than just ourselves.” TFK Birmingham: “My group from the A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club went out with Trips for Kids. After the ride, every single participant said he or she would like to do the trip again; every single participant said that they learned something new; every single participant mentioned a potential lifestyle change. I saw their worlds get a little bigger as they got some exercise. In the end, what more could you wish for?” TFK Tallahassee: A Boys Town teacher comments, “The youth are constantly providing amazing encouragement and showing signs of personal growth. I love seeing the kids become more determined to be successful, overcoming the obstacles of the trail, the look on their faces knowing they can do it and being more confident the second time out. Cycling is a great social opportunity for the kids, and they’re learning a lifelong lesson: you can ride a bicycle forever.” Welcome Our Newest Chapters New Jersey Kids learn important bike mechanic skills in TFK’s Earn-a-Bike program TFK Boys & Girls Club of Fall River, MA selects riders by their desire, attendance and school performance. from TFK Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, ME is under the umbrella of Freyburg Academy, an indeTFK pendent secondary school that serves local day students and boarding students. TFK’S Bike Thrift Shop & Earn-a-Bike Programs In 1994 the Marin Chapter of Trips for Kids International launched Re-Cyclery, a bike thrift shop, to keep bikes out of landfills and provide affordable, environmentally friendly transportation. The next year TFK Marin started the Earn-a-Bike program for at risk kids. Both programs have been enormously successful! The Re-Cyclery model is straight-forward: bike manufacturers and individuals donate parts (both new and used). Skilled bike mechanics reconstruct bikes that are then sold at reasonable prices. Revenues from Re-Cyclery support more than 60% of TFK’s International program. Earn-a-Bike program teaches bike-repair, career and social skills. To date, 16 chapters have replicated our Earn-a-Bike and 4 have opened their local version of a bike thrift shop. TFK DIRECTOR RECEIVES AWARDS Since founding Trips for Kids® 26 years ago, Marilyn Price has received numerous awards. This year at the September 2014 Interbike trade show, the Outdoor Industries Women’s Coalition (OIWC) awarded Marilyn the Pioneering Woman Award to recognize women who have furthered the vision of the OIWC by demonstrating an outstanding commitment to mentoring female colleagues. Earlier this year, Bicycle Retailer magazine named Marilyn one of 50 Influential Women Driving the Business.
