Kurzfassung
Eine Rockformation, die schon in den
80igern für Furore geht wieder an den
Start: „Ron Phillips BLACK ANGELS“.
Zusammen mit KROKUS, CHINA, KILLER
gehörten die BLACK ANGELS mit zu den
ersten Schweizer Rockformationen, die
auch über die Grenzen hinaus bekannt
sind. Ron Phillips, Leadsänger der
Urbesetzung der BLACK ANGELS, ist als
einziger der alten BLACK ANGELS Garde
immer noch aktiv im Geschäft. Durch
seine einzigartige Rockstimme war und ist
Ron eine soundbestimmende Kraft der
BLACK ANGELS - und ein Grund, warum
die BLACK ANGELS bleibenden und
erfolgreichen Eindruck im jungen Buch der
Schweizer Rockgeschichte hinterlassen
haben. Gigs und Tourneen mit Mothers
Finest, Alvin Lee Band, Ten Years After,
Uriah Heep und Whitesnake und Nazareth
gehörten zu den Höhepunkten.
Die Schweizer Hardrockband BLACK
ANGELS wurde 1979 gegründet. Nach 4
Alben, etlichen Tourneen durch Europa,
Auftritten in Funk und Fernsehen hörte die
Band 1985 einfach auf.

Jetzt erhalten die alten Alben der BLACK
ANGELS aus den 80igern das, was Sie
seit über 20 Jahren verdient haben, und
was sich treue Fans immer wieder
wünschten: Karthago Records hat alle 4
Langspielplatten der BLACK ANGELS
digitalisiert als CDs auf den Markt
gebracht. Und: Nach über 20 Jahren gibt
es jetzt auch eine neue Scheibe – und die
Band freut sich, auch wieder live guten
Rock zu präsentieren.
Neben neuen Songs wurde 2010 ein Titel
für eine Superbike Rennserie und das
Pegasus Racing Team geschrieben. Die
Uraufführung von „Sound of thunder“ gab

The Band
Ron Phillips
Lead vocals.
In 1970 Ron started climbing up the ladder
of his musical way of success. Together
with Rudi he founded their 1st band in
1977. In 1980 Ron left the band and joined
XANTILON in Switzerland. In 1982 Ron
became the lead singer of the Suisse rock
legend and black leather hard rock band
BLACK ANGELS. In this time Ron set
milestones in the young book of the
Suisse hard rock scene. The BLACK
ANGELS were in line with KROKUS and
CHINA. After tours through Europe the
BLACK ANGELS were split up in 1985.
After his time Ron joined different bands
and founded together with Rudi in 1995
their own musical dream in a own music
project. During this development it was the
right way to restart “Ron Phillips BLACK
ANGELS”. Ron is known as charismatic
and perfect front man - according to the
voice of WHITESNAKE, David Coverdale.

Rudi Martin
Guitar
In 1977 Rudi founded together with Ron
their 1st band. The repertoire was already
own hard rock songs. Also this 1st band
seems very up-coming success. After 3
years of touring, Ron accepted an offer
from a band in Switzerland. After this
change Rudi spend his time in different
bands. After the BLACK ANGELS split up
at the middle of the 80ties it was the main
goal from Ron and Rudi to start a common
music project. This project became true in
1995. During this time songs were
performed according to the sound of the
BLACK ANGELS. So it was the own right
way that the latest project were switched
into Ron Phillips BLACK ANGELS. Rudi is
known for his melodic and sentimental
rock guitar skills. During guitar playing
Rudi is always perfectly walking on the
edge between all the tunes the band need.

Michael Enders
Bass
Michael initiated his music carrier also in
1977. The first band was split up in 1982.
During the next years Michael joined
different bands like AYDEN (together with
Thilo Herrmann from RUNNING WILD and
GRAVE DIGGER), BEAST (for technical
support) and JR CRUZ (Forgive him, if he
forgot some). In this time Michael played
also together with Ron at different
sessions and projects. And it was a dream
of Ron and Michael that they want to
found a common band project. But Ron
and Michael were always established in
different bands. In 2003 the dreams
became true and Michael joined the band
of Ron and Rudi. Michael plays a powerful
bass guitar and like a strong live acting.
It’s Michael’s main goal that the ordinance
should feel the truth and the fun of making
music – with a bulk of self-mockery.
Marc "the shark" Weber
Drums
Marc “the shark” got many experience in
former Metal, Rock and coverbands like
Acrimony, Artconvention and StonedHenge. He started his career in 1995 and
joined the band with Michael in 2003. For
his drumming balance Marc did and do
actually some studio jobs and he is also
the drummer of TREMORS. Marc is
obviously the youngest member of the
band… (smile) and get his extended
drumming skills by the teamwork with Dani
Loeble, the drummer of HELLOWEEN. His
powerful interaction with the bass guitar of
Michael is one of the most outstanding
attribute of “Ron Phillips BLACK
ANGELS”.

sämtliche(!) Alben in vollem Umfang, und
das zum ersten Mal auf Polycarbonat.
Black Angels - 1981 - 2009
Mit einem Monster von Box-Set, das
vier CDs und ein opulentes Booklet
enthält, treten die BLACK ANGELS
etwas überraschend nach mehr als
20jähriger „Pause“ zum Comeback an.
„1981 – 2009“ enthält nicht nur den
gesamten Backkatalog zum ersten Mal
auf Silberscheibchen, sondern
obendrein auch den brandaktuelle
Dreher "Changes".
In der Ursuppe der eidgenössischen
Rockszene befand sich neben den noch
immer aktiven und weltweit bekannten
KROKUS mit den BLACK ANGELS auch
eine Formation, der trotz durchwegs
beachtlicher Veröffentlichungen der
internationale Durchbruch leider verwehrt
geblieben ist.
In den 80er Jahren schaffte es das Sextett
allerdings zumindest in der Heimat amtlich
durchzustarten und hatte schon lange
Jahre vor GOTTHARD als Rock-Band
Chart-Platzierungen zu verzeichnen. Auch
wenn die Band veröffentlichungstechnisch
nur von 1981 bis 1985 in Erscheinung
getreten ist, kann sich ihre Diskograhie
durchaus sehen lassen, denn in diesen
Jahren haben sich die "Engelchen"
mächtig ins Zeug gelegt. Die Schweizer
hatten innerhalb von nur fünf Jahren satte
vier Longplayer und eine EP eingespielt,
die allesamt als Vinyl-Versionen noch
immer in Umlauf sein sollten.
Auf CD dagegen gab es bislang von den
BLACK ANGELS noch nichts. Doch diese
Tatsache wird nun mit einem einzigen
Schlag geändert. Karthago Records haben
sich nämlich den gesamten Backkatalog
gesichert und legen dieser Tage ein
wahrlich imposantes Box-Set vor. Darin
enthalten ist nicht bloß eine Retrospektive
im Sinne einer Compliation, sondern

Das Debüt "Hellmachine" und das 1985erScheibchen "Black & White" haben auf
einem Silberling ausreichend Platz
gefunden und geben einen guten
Überblick zur Entwicklung dieser Band, die
sich im Laufe ihrer Existenz vom eher
NWOBHM-geschwängerten Hardrock, hin
zum "Classic Rock" orientiert hat, ohne
dabei aber die Roots außer Acht zu
lassen. Um dem Interessenten
ausreichend Grund für den Erwerb dieses
Sets zu geben, haben sich die Macher
nicht lumpen lassen und "Kickdown"
(1983), sowie "Broken Spell" (das letzte
Werk aus dem Jahr 1985) mit wahrlich
beeindruckenden Anteilen an BonusMaterial versehen, zu dem auch LiveMitschnitte von Gigs in Zürich anno 1982,
sowie aus dem Jahr 1984 in London
zählen.
Doch auch das ist noch lange nicht alles,
was in Sachen BLACK ANGELS aus dem
Hut gezaubert werden konnte. Die
Formation existiert in runderneuerter Form
seit kurzer Zeit wieder und hat uns dazu
passend mit "Changes" auch ein
brandneues Album anzubieten, das diese
Box perfekt abzurunden versteht. Auch
wenn mit Sänger Ron Phillips nur noch ein
einziger "Engel" von früher mit von der
Partie ist, haben es die Eidgenossen
perfekt geschafft, ihren lässig intonierten
Hardrock aus der Vergangenheit gekonnt
in die Gegenwart zu transferieren.
Die Zeitlosigkeit der Musik dieser Band
äußert sich nicht zuletzt dadurch, dass sie
auf ihrem brandneuen Album klingen, als
ob die sie einer Zeitmaschine entstiegen
wären, allerdings ohne dabei die Aktualität
aus den Augen zu verlieren. "Retro" im
Sinne von "altbacken" klingen andere, die
BLACK ANGELS machen schlichtweg
exakt das, was man von ihnen kennt. Da
ein Comeback-Album allein aber nicht
ausreichend ist, um einen Bandnamen
nach dermaßen langer Funkstille erneut
ins Gespräch zu bringen, werden wir uns
noch im Laufe dieses Jahres von der –
aus der Vergangenheit kolportierten - LiveStärke dieser Formation überzeugen
lassen können.
Ein nicht nur wegen der überaus
opulenten Aufmachung (die von einem
fetten Booklet inklusive umfangreicher

Historie abgerundet wird) ungemein
hochwertiges Werk, das auf Grund der
Aktualität zudem keineswegs lediglich für
"Rock-Historiker" interessant sein sollte.

BREAKOUT
Die Black Angels waren eine Band aus der
Schweiz, die in den 80ern, genauer gesagt
von 1981 bis '85 vier Alben aufgenommen
hat und dort auch zu Charterfolgen kam
Es sind die Alben "Hellmachine" (1981),
"Kickdown" (1983), "Black And White"
(1985) und "Broken Spell" (1985).
Laut Labelinfo sah man in den Mannen
schon die neuen Krokus, doch
irgendetwas brach den Eidgenossen das
musikalische Genick, weshalb bis heute
kein musikalisches Lebenszeichen mehr
erschien! Dabei gab es doch Tourneen in
Europa und England. Jetzt ist mir auch
klar, warum kein einziger Kollege mir was
über die Jungs sagen konnte. 1985 ist nun
mal auch schon verdammt lange her!
Nun ist die Band bzw. Frontmann Ron
Phillips zurück und hat ein neues Lineup
um sich geschart. Deshalb läuft das
Ganze unter dem Banner Ron Phillip's
Black Angels. Auf der ersten CD singt
übrigens ein Engländer namens Clive
Murray, der aber glücklicherweise nicht
blieb.
Die Band hat nun alle alten Alben, plus
einem neuen Silberling mit anständigem,
fast schon düsteren Cover namens
"Changes-The Last Decades" (2009) in
einem Pappschuber auf Karthago Records
heraus gebracht, wo man sicherlich auch
alle CDs einzeln ergattern kann. Jede CD

ist mit einem Interview mit Sänger Ron,
Linernotes des Ex-Mitglieds und jetzigem
Pater(!) mit dem Namen Bruno und
ultralustigen Bildern der 80er Jahre Band
ausgestattet. Dazu kommen natürlich noch
die Texte. Schade nur, dass in jeder CD
quasi dasselbe bis auf Texte und Bilder
drin steht, aber immerhin in Deutsch und
Englisch! Beim neuen Album ist es ein
dafür ein anderes Interview! Trotzdem: da
hätte man doch ein größeres Interview auf
die CDs verteilen können, oder?
Soundfetischisten werden das Problem
haben, das die Alben "Hellmachine" und
"Black And White", welche auf einer CD
zusammen sind, nur von LP gezogen
wurden, da die Originalbänder sicherlich
nicht mehr vorliegen. Das leise Knistern
bin ich als LP Sammler gewöhnt.
Für viel Gelächter sorgen bei mir die
heutzutage unfreiwillig komischen
Poserklamotten, die mich an eine
Mischung aus Stryper und Stormwitch
erinnern. Aber auch die Cover haben es in
sich! Das waren halt die Achtziger, eine
oftmals geschmacksfreie Zone.
Musikalisch rocken die schwarzen Engel
in derselben Ecke wie Krokus oder auch
die frühen Scorpions. Sänger Ron ist kein
Supersänger, aber dafür eigenständig und
drückt den Songs seinen Stempel auf..
Die Songs sind solide, aber reißen mich
auch nicht zu Begeisterungssprüngen hin!
Sicherlich erinnert die Machart an viele
Bands dieser Zeit und ist heutzutage auch
wirklich noch gut genug! Phillips und
seiner neuen Gang ist es auf dem
Comeback Album gelungen an die alten
Zeiten (in besserem Sound) anzuknüpfen
ohne sich zu blamieren. Das schafft nicht
jeder. 80er Jahre Fans und Hard Rocker
sind bei dieser Band richtig!

- the production is well done,... once
again, a real 'must-have' for the true
defenders of Classic Hard Rock and
Metal. We reviewers only received a snap
of the entire package, I mean a few songs
from each albums we received but I don't
care about that at all. I knew Black Angels
from many years ago, always a great band
to me and I'm really pleased to know that
Karthago Records spoiled us all with this 4
box CD set.
Feels good to hear Ron Phillips' voice
again after such a long time - unique to the
bone, this guy and the rest of the original
band members deserve a statue - a medal
of honour for the awesome works
delivered trough several decades in pure
Rock & Metal. To the unfamiliar, curious
ones - Black Angels plays typical Classic
Hard Rock and Heavy Metal music I'd like
to compare with other troops as The Glory
Bells Band, Parasite, Trance, early
Scorpions,... guys into NWOBHM better
look out for Black Angels too, you won't be
disappointed!
They're back on the trax and ready to
Rock and Roll again - new album just
released, the next months they will hit the
road to deliver several live acts - stay clear
minded and be there watching Black
Angels bringing on a brand new live

BACK AGAIN...
The legendary Black Angels are back after
24 years and their essence has not been
corrupted by time since 1979. The swiss
band is formed by singer and front man
Ron Phillips (Boyscout), guitarist Rudi
Martin, bass player Michael Enders and
drummer Mark “the shark”. Those who
love the band and its “Kickdown” album
won’t be disappointed by the new record
“Changes-The last decades”. This record
is the living proof of a pure and thrilling
instant of creativity, this will be so evident
when you will listen to the very first track of
the album: “Shine on”; the song perfectly
embodies Black Angels’ strenght and
attitude. This track rushes out thanks to
Ron Phillips expressive, powerful voice
and to electrifying riffs. They spoil and
conquer us with their hard rock and with
songs like "Walking Away", "Changes",

"The Evil", "Right on down the Road", the
slow and thoughtful “Talking to Angels”
and the delicate ballad "Changes II" wich
charms the listeners and attracts their
attention. The sound of the band is
modern but yet, somehow, classic thanks
to a strong rhythm section and to a thrilling
performance. This album will fit perfectly in
every rocker’s discography; everyone will
be able to enjoy the band’s amazing
comeback on the scene. I listened to
"Changes – The last Decades" over and
over again and I really think it’s brilliant.

More Like Blue(s) Angel - 70%

Black Angels – Kickdown
Hard Rock – largely a gay American relic,
right? Something likely to evoke images of
the soothing Boston, or the wimpy Brian
Adams, perhaps Van Halen? No – not
entirely, as several key proto-metal bands
were proving at the time of the late 1970’s
(I don’t know how many times I’ve
mentioned Riot so far, but you see what
I’m getting at here). Anyway, for the 70’s
it’s generally considered fine among those
who consider anything with a tinge of iron
in its blood acceptable – am I right? But
this album was released in 1983 – a
slightly less-acceptable year to be putting
out a hard rock effort, considering you
have the benefit of great hindsights like
Accept, Iron Maiden, Heavy Load, Saxon
and others debuts, to draw inspiration
from. That is the major problem with this
still good release from Black Angels from
Switzerland –its date. While the Swiss are
known well for their hard rock/heavy metal
– in the form of Krokus; who’s every album
has reached platinum sales there, it
doesn’t mean all bands from there need to
follow this already trodden path. Bloody
Six is a band that would prove this a year
later with their debut. My point is that by
this stage, the band should’ve been
leaning towards a harder, more aggressive
sound if they wanted to have an impact –
with this one very much taking a bluesy
rock approach that would’ve gone down
well if released in ’80 or ’79.
This one is very much a bluesy rocker,
retaining some traditional rock n roll
touches a la the Zeppelin or Lynyrd
Skynyrd – that’s fine, but a little tired by
the time it was sent out to a less than
receptive audience. Read on if you like a
bit of boogie laden classic rock however.
The band provides good examples of the
very much Deep Purle-ish sound; boogie
organish keyboards backing those solid

‘thumping along’ basslines with your dirt
Ted Nugent style riffery is out at the
forefront. Perhaps the best example, and
most catchy song, ‘Blind Like a Fool’ with
its amazing hook chorus harmony “Blind
like a fool…” that you can’t help but want
to sing along to. This one could’ve easily
gone alongside ‘Free Bird’ and other blues
rock hits if it was released four years
earlier. Very rockin number that’s just a
victim of its date. While it’s fine for bands
to play whatever the hell genre they like –
and its “tough titties” if nerdy NWOBHM
obsessed reviewers don’t like their sound
25 years later on some website, the fact is
that Black Angels were a band with
commercial ambitions, an obvious hookheavy approach, and not to mention
recording contracts with quite a substantial
catalogue being the result. The blues
approach might have worked well five
years earlier in the commercial market, but
by ’83, times had changed for the harder,
Krokus realising that with their
masterpiece ‘Headhunter’ being released
around the same time as this one.
The track ‘Rough and Ready’ is another
strong cut like the aforementioned. This
one has perhaps the most balls of any
available on the album, the title being a
rather obvious hint. Your main chorus riff
is Sabbath rip-off that anyone could pick
up on, but in this format works just as well.
There’s some rebellious attitude in the
lyrics, which are rock anthemesque things
in your typical style. This is another
whiskey drinkin’ brawler which is 4 years
late in my books. Very much your 70’s
biker party music with it’s consistent
summery pace – it’s fun but again not very
original by this date. Other touches have
enthusiasm, but are mainly highlighted by
pieces of them, rather than exciting you on
a whole. ‘Bite the Dog’ is a slower number
with the same sound as those already
mentioned, but has a nice speedier chorus
– raw 70’s heavy metal riffs, with their
simplistic crunchiness that are about
equalled in volume by a very classic bass
thumpery. What I cannot continue without
mentioning is the erotic ‘Over Now’ a song
focusing on a twenty one year old’s
fixation with a thirteen (not a typo) year old
girl – an excellent sleazy touch. I’ve heard
as young a fifteen in Motley Crue’s lyrics,
so this is a new standard – and by two
years no less! The thing is that the age is
reiterated constantly in the verses.
Black Angels’ second album here is an
enjoyable piece of blues rock – with some
definite heavy metal in the mix. However,
this bands obscurity is not surprising, as
they were tracing the wrong sound for the
time, probably living out the rest of their
shadow in the shadow of their slightly
more menacing compatriots Krokus and
perhaps Bloody Six. If you like the sound
described here – definitely go for it –

because it is enjoyable 70’s-ism, but don’t
get this one expecting ‘metal’ get the
Accept disc instead, as this one is not
willing to acknowledge the changing music
market here, or admit it’s not from the
Bayou’s of Louisiana (but then again,
‘Creedence wasn’t either). If you’re after a
bit of lowbrow fun, keyboard infused
sounding bassy rock, in the tradition of
Deep Purple – check out this disc. ‘Fate of
Emotion’ (with its more melodic
NWOBHMy approach) and ‘Rough and
Ready’ are your hardest cuts, with some
certain charm. Not a bad release, just too
bluesy.
