BRYN MAWR EDGEWATER’S HISTORIC
Past
In 1886, John Lewis Cochran, an entrepreneur from
Philadelphia, purchased land bounded by Foster,
Bryn Mawr, Broadway and Lake Michigan. He cleared
and subdivided the 78 acres of dense woods and
transformed it into a model residential community. He
called his new subdivision Edgewater. The commercial
hub of this new enterprise, Bryn Mawr, was named
after an affluent town near Philadelphia. Cochran
persuaded the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul
Railroad to establish a commuter station at Bryn
Mawr and Winthrop to link Edgewater with Chicago’s
downtown. Bryn Mawr became the transportation
gateway to Edgewater. Meeting halls, churches, shops
and restaurants grew up near the station, making it
Edgewater’s Main Street.
Elite members of society built mansions along the
lakefront and joined the throng. The area was annexed
by the City of Chicago in 1889.
ENTERTAINMENT
DISTRICT OF THE
1920s
• “Midnight in the Marine Room from the Edgewater
Beach Hotel” was broadcast to millions as dance
music floated on the airwaves into countless
homes. Couples lined up to dine and dance in the
magnificent room.
•Another popular Edgewater Beach attraction was
the Beachwalk, an outdoor pavilion for dining and
dancing on the shore of Lake Michigan.
• The Bryn Mawr Theatre at 1125 W. Bryn Mawr was
the first movie theatre designed by Rap and Rap who
later went on to design movie palaces such as the
Uptown and Chicago Theatre.
• The 1111 Club at 1111 W. Bryn Mawr was famous
for its live jazz and sophisticated night life.
• Bowling and billiards were available at 1103 W. Bryn
Mawr.
• Neighborhood old timers tell of a speakeasy in the
1000 block of Bryn Mawr, which was frequently
raided by police.

BUSINESS DISTRICT
1900s
New hotels and apartment buildings, designed by
renowned architects of the day, were built on and
near Bryn Mawr to serve singles and couples seeking
excellent transportation and convenience-driven
services. The Bryn Mawr Hotel and Belle Shore, built
during the 1920s, were known as apartment hotels.
The Edgewater Beach Hotel, built in 1916, was a luxury
hotel which quickly became the epitome of style and
elegance throughout Chicagoland. It was a “must-stop”
for movie stars and dignitaries traveling through Chicago.
The Bryn Mawr Business District, from Sheridan Road to
Broadway and from Catalpa to Hollywood on Broadway, is
a modern, vibrant, bustling area. Business and financial
services, lively outdoor cafes, fine restaurants, theaters
and unique shops are thriving here. The Bryn Mawr
“L” station serves thousands of riders daily. Colorful
umbrellas and bountiful floral displays showcase
venerable masterpieces of architecture, still very much
alive today.

Historic District status for Bryn Mawr, and in 1995, Bryn Mawr was
named to the National Register of Historic Places.
