Convention 2014 was exciting and invigorating and there is no way you can come away from the event and not be excited about our Fraternity and the future of Delta Gamma. Our leaders are mindful of our past, respecting our traditions but also aware of and planning for changes that must take place to keep us vibrant and relevant for years to come. Let’s start with the good stuff! Greater Naples received several awards that recognize us for all the good we do in our community: National – #2 Service for Sight Hours National – #5 Labels for Education National – Five Stars to Success Award for outstanding programming, leadership and operation. Region – Outstanding Philanthropy: Service ‘Doing Good’ every day to help others with vision impairments. Service to others will remain a cornerstone of our chapter and something that we will continue to focus on in the next biennium. One of our speakers from the Foundation for Blind Children in Arizona said the following that I think embodies our chapter too -‘Never underestimate your power to help a blind person with the gift of time’. Thank you for giving your time! ...Continued on page 14 1 Jan Lavery and Jackie Pipher will each have a $1000 scholarship named in their honor for tireless past and continuing contributions to the Greater Naples Delta Gamma Alumni Chapter. As you all know the anchor symbolizes hope and is something that all of us as members cherish whenever we see one! There is nothing better than being ‘Anchored’ in Delta Gamma! I hope that as you read this newsletter about all of the exciting events, activities and volunteer opportunities available for you to enjoy that you will set aside the time in your busy schedules to join us. Whether you are a charter member who has attended for 20+ years or brand new to our area, there is something for everyone. We continue to expand our programming to include activities that women in all life stages will enjoy. This is the last year of my term as President and it has been such an honor to lead this wonderful chapter and to work and play with so many amazing, dedicated and talented women. All of our chairwomen have gone above and beyond to ensure our members enjoy all aspects of our sisterhood. I have to recognize and thank with all my heart the fabulous women who have served on the Board with me for the past four years. Carole, Diane, Stacey, Andrea, Karin, Meredith and Karen you are the most dedicated, supportive and enthusiastic partners any President could hope to have on her team. It has been a pleasure to serve with you and to share the thrill of watching this chapter grow in membership and participation as well as increase our visibility and stature in the community. As we look to elect a new board this year, I encourage all of you to consider taking on a leadership role. My ‘hope’ is that I have done some good as your leader and that I can turn the reins over to one of you knowing that the future is bright for our chapter! So, welcome back to Greater Naples! Get out your anchor and wear it proudly. As you will hear this year, we want you to say ‘I AM a Delta Gamma’! I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones this season as we all return to beautiful southwest Florida and renew our bonds of sisterhood! Ever since The Lighthouse of Collier Summer Camp began 5 yrs. ago Andy has been “Johnny On The Spot,” right there whenever she was needed. She was instrumental in the organizing of the Summer Camp for the children and now does the programming of activities not only for the camp but also the monthly events during the school year for the children which you can view on their website. Andy maintains that pledging Delta Gamma in 1979 was probably one of the best decisions of her life. Not only did she gain a lifetime of fond memories and friendships but also it helped shape her as a person. Most importantly, Delta Gamma taught her how to give to others. When Andy was a senior at the University of Minnesota she was the Sorority Rush Counselor and worked with incoming freshmen, guiding and counseling them through their rush experience. Working with DG philanthropy projects helped foster her continued desire to volunteer her services still today. Andy believes that as college students we all came to understand that those Greek letters Delta (D) Gamma (G) stand not only for sisterhood but also the wonderful motto, “DO GOOD,” that we were challenged to live our lives by. Treasurer’s Report by Karin Herrmann We have outdone ourselves this year and have donated more funds than we ever have in the past! Thank you for all your donations and for all your support! Here are the following donations we made 6 Naples Anchor News September 2014 INVITATION TO MEMBERSHIP Anchored Connections Project by Karen Smith Delta Gamma has initiated a new project this year – aimed at helping sisters connect to each other. The mission of the Delta Gamma Anchored Connections Project is to foster friendship, sympathy and assistance resulting in deeper meaningful relationships – The point is to realize the potential of our unique membership, share global experiences, cross generations, make DG a resource for non sorority life experiences for all our members, collegians and alumnae alike. Stay tuned for more information on this great new twist on an old idea that is based in the tenants of the sorority we all pledged – Delta Gamma! As 66 of our Chapter members gathered on March 1, 2014, to celebrate Founders Day, I felt such joy thinking how proud Eva, Mary and Anna would be of our Greater Naples Alumnae Chapter. We counted 106 dues-paying members this year! Though we thrive on greeting those many members who return to us year after year, it is exciting for us to meet new members who make their way to our Chapter. Each year we are able to count more recent graduates as new members. We welcome Sisters who are able to attend even one event or volunteer a morning or two a year as well as I AM A SORORITY WOMAN!! Another new project Delta Gamma has started is a media campaign called #I AM A SORORITY WOMAN. All alumna of Delta Gamma as well as alumnae groups, are invited to consider participating in this powerful demonstration of sisterhood. It is easy to lend our voice to this wonderful demonstration of lifelong membership. Inspiring that change for all alumnae to stop saying “I was a Delta Gamma” and to start saying, “I am a Delta Gamma” is a goal we all share. This campaign is one way to share that Delta Gamma is a powerful, meaningful and current part of our busy lives. This campaign is sure to capture the attention of women who might struggle with connecting relevance to a sorority after college. It will also capture the attention of those in our lives who don’t know we are sorority women, but respect and value our talents, and have wondered where we get out hopeful optimism and “Do Good” commitment. Our alumnae groups make the choice to gather and support each other, and we know our collegiate women are seeking the connection after college with women who understand the role DG has played in their lives. Let’s demonstrate that this powerful experience is not just for 4 years, but for life. To that end, in our own Greater Naples Delta Gamma chapter, we will be using this “hashtag” on our E-Blasts, Facebook and twitter posts. So be sure to look for it! 7 social and philanthropic activities. Involvement may be as much or as little as time and energy permit and may vary from year to year or season to season. And membership is not required to attend any of our events. New attendees to a Saturday luncheon, Girls Night Out, Lunch Bunch, or any of our volunteer opportunities which aid the visually impaired or blind, are welcomed with open arms. Finding old friends and meeting new ones is our past, present and future Sisterhood goal and promise. Membership information is found on the last page of this newsletter. I volunteered at an eye screening in Immokalee, and visited the Bonita Springs Lions Eye Clinic in early 2011. At that time, I began to learn about the Clinic and its need for part time volunteers. Honestly, starting as a volunteer at the Bonita Springs Lions Eye Clinic in early 2011 seems like it was just yesterday. That small start in January of 2011 has now evolved into a full-time position as Director of the Clinic, with a short two year transition from volunteer to part-time employee. Now my responsibilities include all personnel, accounting and payroll management, federal and Florida State Compliance regulations, physician licensing and scheduling, and overseeing other Clinic responsibilities such as making sure we have enough volunteers and supplies to keep things running smoothly. In addition, my duties as Director of Development keep me busy with grant writing and general solicitations and activities to keep the Clinic in business through fundraising and community involvement. Our patients are a constant reminder of how many people and children in Southwest Florida need our help to maintain vision health, from the youngest patients, as set of twins 2 months old, to the teens and the ‘middle agers’ in need of vision assistance, to the 65+ year olds that are just trying to maintain their vision after experiencing such debilitating illness such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. This year is promising to be very exciting at the Clinic with our new programs of providing tertiary, follow-up care to children in Collier County who have nowhere to go for Amblyopia treatment and the challenge of setting up more outreach programs to outlying communities. Through our partnership with the Bonita Springs Lions Club, The United Way of Lee County and The Naples Children Education Foundation we hope to include more than 400 additional patients to our every-growing numbers of over 7500 patient visits and surgical procedures since inception of the Clinic. But none of this could be accomplished without the dedication of the Greater Naples Delta Gamma Alumni who tirelessly donate over 1400 hours of their time each year to the successful operation of the Clinic. I certainly treasure every moment we spend together and not only learn something new every day about our national philanthropy of sight preservation, but have formed many new friendships. Hopefully we have all learned the true meaning of what ‘doing good’ for the community really means. I truly wish that each and every one of our members has the opportunity to experience the satisfaction of making an impact on the lives of others through supporting such a great cause. Over the last year, the following sisters volunteered over 150 hours to our philanthropy! WOW!!! Thank you! Sylvia Conde Cynthia Ann Craig 9 Naples Anchor News September 2014 Collegiate Corner by Carole Feagler Britanny is a senior at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama. She pledged DG in 2010, and though they do not have a house presently, the school is trying to get Greek houses brought to this school and she is excited about this! Her chapter was established in 1991; they currently have 41 members but hopefully will have a great Rush season and by September 8th, the chapter will have grown! Britanny feels the best part of being in Delta Gamma would have to be the superb support system. During her tenure in the chapter, she has been a very active member serving as Director of E-comm, Webmaster, Director of Funds, Director of Recruitment Records, VP Foundation, and VP Finance. I’d say she might be an MVP of her chapter as well!! Britanny’s other activities at school include being treasurer of the Math Club, and a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon which is a mathematics honor society. She has also tutored, and is a member of the Chemistry Club. She is employed year round, working part time hours in the school months and full time in the summer. This scholarship will go towards school fees not Brittany is extremely grateful for this scholarship, and is inspired by the many alumni who have helped her get an education. She is looking forward to graduating and having a career where she can help collegiate members in their quest for an education as well. Congratulations, Brittany!! Caralynne (Cara) Kootz, University of Tampa, is the winner of the Jacqueline Irwin Pipher Honorary Scholarship. I cannot wait until the day I can have my 60 year pin! I am so happy to hear how Delta Gamma plays such a large part in your life. After just 2 and a half years as a Delta Gamma, it has already played such a large role in my life--I can only imagine how that will have grown 60 years from now. Here is a little bit of information about myself and my experiences in Delta Gamma: I am 21 years old, beginning my senior year at the University of Miami. I am a double major in Elementary Education and Psychology, with hopes to make an impacting difference in the lives of children throughout my career. Following graduation, I plan to become an elementary school teacher. Depending on my experiences and where my life takes me, I may or may not decide to go back to school a few years from now to pursue a doctor’s degree in psychology. I am currently the President of Gamma Sigma Alpha, the National Greek Academic Honor Society, and am a member of Rho Lambda, the National Sorority Leadership Recognition Society. I am also a member of UM Future Educators Association, and have taken few leadership positions in other organizations on campus as well. On top of being an A student, a Delta Gamma, a leader in various honor societies and organizations, and currently having two jobs, a large amount of my time is spent dancing. Dance has always been my greatest passion in lifeschedule. I am a ballerina since the age of 3, was captain of my high school’s varsity dance team, and am currently a part of KAOS at The University of Miami, which is a co-ed hip hop group. I also coordinate and choreograph all the dance competitions for various Greek events, such as “O-Cheer,” that our chapter takes part in. Recruitment at the University of Miami takes place at the beginning of the spring semester. I joined Delta Gamma in January of 2012, and was initiated on April 1, 2012. Going into recruitment, I wanted to be completely open-minded and had no idea where I would end up—but a small part of me always knew that DG was where I wanted to be. semester of freshman year, I had already established numerous friendships—and my closest friends all liked sororities other than Delta Gamma. However, on the third day of recruitment, I walked out of Delta Gamma 100% knowing that it was where I belonged. A big part of this had to do with the one sister that I talked to that day. The minute I met her, I felt as if I had known her forever. Not only did we hit it off and get along so well, but she was also a girl that I looked up to. That day, I realized that Delta Gamma was where I would grow as a person and as a leader, and where I would be able to be my own unique individual in a diverse group of women who I looked up to. Becoming a sister of Delta Gamma was the best decision I have ever made. Not only have I welcomed hundreds of sisters into my life who I can count on at any point, but I have also created an innumerable amount of memories that I the position of Director of Anchor Splash this past year was truly a life changing experience. I, of all the amazing women in the chapter, was chosen to coordinate our national philanthropy event that has taken place for decades—I was truly honored to be given this opportunity. With my help, our chapter was able to raise a record amount for Beta Tau of over $25,000, and impact the lives of people in need. This experience led me to realize that I can not only achieve my goals in life, but that I can triumph in ways I have never imagined. It helped me to see what really matters in life. My Sorry it took so long to receive this information from me! Thank you again for your generosity. I truly am honored to receive a scholarship in your name. If you are ever in the Miami or Fort Lauderdale area, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me! I would love to hopefully meet one day. Last year, Delta Gammas gave 207,676 hours of volunteer service in a variety of ways to their communities. However, the work of the Foundation extends beyond service. The Foundation is governed by the Delta Gamma Foundation Constitution and Articles of Incorporation, the Convention and by gifts from collegiate chapters, alumnae groups, individual members and their friends/relatives, other foundations, Foundation fund raising, investment income and Fraternity allocations authorized by the Board of Trustees Foundation Projects - Jan Hankins has shared some ideas that we can all successful “craft night” at Jan’s home earlier this year and hope to organize another such evening or two throughout this coming season’s calendar. Some ideas are foam visors, button exercise (which uses recycled plastic food containers), bean bags, tic tac toe game (which uses foam – old pool and beach noodles are great for this particular craft!). If you have an idea for a project, or would like to volunteer your home or club house for an evening of crafts and fun, please contact either Jan at Jan@[email protected] or Stacey at [email protected] Hannah’s Handbag – Bring loose change to any Greater Naples Delta Gamma Event and dump it into Hannah’s Handbag for the Delta Gamma Foundation. I was asked to sit on a panel with other Presidents to lead a discussion about programming and answer questions from my peers. It was a great day and I learned that we do a lot of great things in our chapter and are using the tools available to us to help our chapter succeed. On Friday morning my roommate Allison from the Grosse Pointe Michigan Alumnae Chapter and I got up early to participate in a 1 mile walk for our Service For Sight: Joining Forces program for blind and visually impaired men and women in our armed forces. It was only about 85 when we set out at 6:30AM but we made it and enjoyed some fresh air for a great cause! Convention is certainly about networking and sisterhood but there is also a lot of business to be done and this year it was even more important than usual with a proposed initiative involving our Council that generated plenty of discussion and ultimately did not pass. The initiative put simply and 5 at large positions. The premise for this change is to place more responsibility on the directors so that the Council can focus on strategy and direction and less on day-to-day issues. The hope is that this structure change would foster more teamwork and encourage our leaders to work on issues together without the bias of their individual positions. Through the course of the discussion it was clear that there were still too many unanswered questions on how day to day problems would be solved, who on Council would have stops’. After two hours of discussion and comments from delegates, the proposed amendment did not pass and was sent back to There were 900 nominations received for Council positions and 25 of those women accepted the opportunity to be interviewed for our seven positions. The nominating committee slated seven women to serve for the next two years. The delegates elected a new Council with two races contested with one resulting in the election of the non-slated candidate (*): President, Staci Skoog; VP Collegians, Aleesa Ross; VP Alumnae, Cori Wallace; VP Programming, Wendy Faust; VP Membership, Laurie Kight; We continue to expand our Fraternity with new chapters colonizing at Christopher Newport University, VA (2015), Iowa State University (2016) and University of Louisville (2017). We also approved the expansion of our approved college list so that our expansion team can move quickly if we are asked to colonize on any particular campus (it’s basically most universities in the country). 14 Naples Anchor News September 2014 Here are some highlights from the State of the Foundation: • 2013-2014 was the best year in the Foundation’s history for donations • Expenses are down and the return on our investments is up • Our Foundation has $19M in assets up from $7.5M ten years ago • Collegiates and alumnae donated 375,360 service hours • $386, 500 in grants were given for Service For Sight organizations • 1 million individuals with sight issues were helped • Sisters Helping Sisters program raised $1.5M and provided 600 women with $2,500 scholarships (Greater Naples made two donations to this fund) • $3.4M donated to the Foundation by collegiate and alumnae • $1.5M in needs based scholarships were granted that helped women stay in school • Foundation provides some or all of the funding for our Collegiate Development Consultants, The Lewis Institute (training for collegians) and the PRO Speaker program to name a few Here are some highlights from the State of the Fraternity: • There are 20,269 collegiates, up 6.7% vs. 2013 with an average chapter size of 139 members • The average GPA is 3.26 with 22 chapters #1 on their campuses and 96 chapters above the all woman’s GPA • There are 181,032 alumnae (two of the pictures we submitted from Founders Day were included in the video (Dede, Monica and Joan from 2013 and Ginnie and Shirley from 2014). • Only 18.2% of the eligible alumnae are paying dues • Delta Gamma placed 3rd in the use of Social Media at a greek awards program • The Fraternity launched a new updated website – take a look at it – www.deltagamma.org We had several amazing and motivating speakers ranging from a blind opera singer who is now running a school in Hawaii, to a Delta Gamma who runs a very large website store for stationary and other items (erincondren.com) to a Lt. Col. In the Army who lost her sight after contracting a virus while in Iraq to a Delta Gamma who has climbed the highest women had strong messages about perseverance, passion, and leadership that inspired all of us. There’s really no way to encapsulate four days into one article but as you can see it was an action packed weekend! I must also say that based on the many collegiates I met, we are in good hands. I don’t recall being as poised, informed and passionate as they are with long resumes of service and leadership already experienced. We continue to recruit Finally, there are two very important ‘save the dates’ that I must share with everyone. First, we will be celebrating our 150th Anniversary in 2023 and plans are already underway for an amazing celebration. Past President Laurie Roselle and Linda Linck will be chairing this event and you will be hearing more about this in the years ahead. Last but certainly not least; Convention 2016 will be in our backyard in Orlando at the Hilton Bonnet Creek! I am looking forward to helping the planners in any way we can and to having a huge contingent attend from Greater Naples!
