Watercolor Gesso Tutorial
Watercolor Gesso Tutorial
August/September 2011
This technique was contributed and filmed by Hetty Sanders. The gesso is used to blend and mute
the watercolor crayon color with a soft effect.
Supplies:
- Watercolor Crayons
- Water
- Gesso
- Brush
- Watercolor or Plain White Paper
- Cup
- Palette
Step One:
Use 2 or 3 colors of crayons and color on the paper. It doesn’t have
to be neat. Leave some white space showing.

Step Two:
Add water in the cup and put a blob of gesso on the plate.
Step Three:
Dip the brush in the water and then in the gesso.
Step Four:
Brush over the crayon marks on the paper. The watercolor crayon
color will soften when blended with the gesso and water. Go over
the paper a few times, without saturating the paper too much.
