H
ow are you doing on
your New Year’s Resolution
to get your PMC safe to
drive? Once you’ve got that
task completed, the next item
on your list should be for
you and your PMC to attend
a Texas Region event. Be it
a local or state-wide Texas
Region event, JUST DO IT!
If you were not able to attend the After
Holiday Party in San Marcos, TX, you
already missed the first great Texas Region
event for 2010. The theme this year was a
Hawaiian Luau. The weekend started Friday
with members going to dinner and visiting.
Saturday morning we loaded up the PMCs
and drove the short distance to Texas Region
member Dick Burdick’s newest car museum,
called Dick’s Classic Garage. After the
museum, which features only American cars
made from 1929 to 1959, we went to Texas
Region member Joel Hofmann’s Riley’s Tavern
for a homemade Mexican fajita lunch. We
sat outside to eat and visit while enjoying the
sunshine and mild winter temperatures.
Saturday evening was the main event at the
Embassy Suites. The evening started with
everyone being greeted as you would if you
were actually in Hawaii with fresh, real floral
leis, put on by a beautiful Hawaiian woman
in authentic dress. After a delicious Hawaiianthemed meal, we were treated to a Polynesian
Dance Spectacular, performed by a dance
troupe originally from Hawaii, but now living
in Austin, TX. Texas Region members had
two opportunities to learn to hula during the
spectacular. What fun! After the program,
a disc jockey played favorites to dance the
evening away. It was wonderful.
Thank you to members Cathie and Dan
Mouton, Joel and Angie Hofmann, Dan and
Evelyn Harrison, Sneed and Anne Adams,
and Ruth and Don Zook for all your help
in making the After Holiday event one of
the best! Thank you, also, to our one and
only Lone Star Lady Editor, Steve Krazer,
for taking photos of the event. Thank you to
all members who documented the event in
On Friday, we will tour through some of the
best spring wildflower areas in Texas. Along
the way, we will have lunch at beautiful Lillian
Farms. We will also stop in Brenham, TX, for
a tour of Blue Bell Ice Cream (free samples,
yum!).
Saturday morning we will drive to the BNB
Ranch where the PMC judging will take
place. Texas Region members Xavier and
Alicia Bethune are opening their ranch for
the club to enjoy all day Saturday. The ranch
is something to see. You DO NOT want to
miss it! All sorts of fun outdoor activities for
all ages. From a fully stocked lake that is large
enough for skiing and jet skis to a hay ride
around the ranch. We will have a barbecue
lunch at the ranch. Saturday afternoon on our
way back to the host hotel in College Station,
Sneed has devised a PMC-oriented mock Fox
Hunt for us to participate in with a prize for
the winner.
Saturday evening we will have the Awards
Banquet at the Miramont Country Club
along with a Drive By of the winning PMCs
in front of the country club. The Miramont
main building looks like it could be in the
French countryside! The event will end on
Sunday morning with the Texas Region board
meeting.
Yet another event to attend, and the reason
why the Spring Meet is earlier this year, is
the National Spring Tour taking place from
Sunday, April 11 to Friday, April 16. The tour
will start near Nashville, Tennessee, and end
in Natchez, Mississippi. The tour organizers
are Texas Region members Kelly Kyle and
Hal Caudell. The tour will follow the historic
Natchez Trace. If you have not ever considered
driving your PMC on a tour, or just going on
a tour as a rider, it is one of the experiences
you need to take advantage of as a club
member. Getting to see areas of the country in
— and with a group of — PMCs is fun.
Please join us at one, if not all, of these fun
events. We want to get to know you and your
PMC.
Get out and drive your PMC!
See you soon.
Take care and enjoy,
Phillip Reese

WOW! The Texas Region After-Holiday
Party Weekend was a real Duesy!

Y
ou know, it’s quite a crazy world we live in. On the same January day our son hiked the Great Wall of China in freezing tempera-
tures… Sue and I enjoyed a relaxing Luau in San Marcos, Texas.
Oh, yes, the hotel management did get a little upset when the hole
was dug in the center of their conference area in order
to roast the pig (it’s really amazing what can be
accomplished with a Bobcat!)… and the front doors
will probably never be the same after
forcing those 40’ palm trees through
them. But as always…
While some members took the shuttle
to explore the gigantic outlet mall next
door… the rest of us caravanned to Texas Region Member Dick Burdick’s newest facility “Dick’s Classic Garage”. Dick
transformed what looks to have been an
automobile dealership into a wonderful naturally lit home for 40+ pristine
American classic cars. Auburn, Cord,
Duesenberg, Lincoln, Packard, Cadillac,
Chrysler, Corvette, Studebaker… even
a Chris Craft to haul behind. Following
our museum tour, we moseyed over to
Riley’s Tavern (the oldest bar in Texas) for
fajitas on the patio. Yes, the patio. For
once, the weather was in full-cooperation with our weekend plans! Like I said
before… Phillip and Cathie took care of
EVERYTHING!
After our leisurely lunch and boisterous
camaraderie we were all on our own until “party time”. I took a nap in anxious
preparation.
4 The Lone Star Lady • November–December 2009
The party was wonderful! You simply
haven’t lived until you’ve seen the likes of
David Galvan, Tim Myrick, Dan Mouton
Sneed Adams and Dennis Pisula in a grass
skirt…. or John Sweney doing the gator
on the dance floor (Yes… it was a reallyBIG dance floor!). The food was superb…
the genuine, live hula entertainment (complete with Texas Region audience participation) was priceless. You really should have
been there. Words can’t describe it. You
really should have. We RROC folks really
know how to have fun!

The RR Silver Cloud II’s
adventure in the Texas wine
country began when a good
friend asked John – and the
Cloud II – to participate in
a charity auction for an organization near and dear to
our hearts. The Somervell History
Foundation owns and operates the Barnard’s Mill Museum in Glen Rose, TX.
Built in 1860 by Charles E. Barnard, the
Mill was the first permanent structure
in Somervell County. Barnard’s Mill
has been on the state Register of Historic Places for more than a quarter of a
century, and was placed on the National
Register of Historic Places in 1982. The
Somervell History Foundation began
restoration of the Mill – a massive
undertaking – in 2008. The SHF holds
a charity gala and auction once per year
to help raise much needed funds for the
restoration.
Gala planners were convinced that a
chauffeured trip in a RR Silver Cloud II
through Texas wine country would be
a high-value item with auction participants. John was asked to bring the
Cloud to the Gala to ‘merchandise’ the
auction item. Event planners saved a
spot for the Cloud right in front of the
Mill, where the Gala was held. John
spent the morning detailing the car, making sure that it looked its best. Unfortu-

nately, just after we started the 90-mile
drive to Glen Rose from our home in
Southlake the skies began to pour rain.
By the time we arrived at the Mill, the
designated ‘show-off ’ parking spot
reserved for the Cloud was a bit muddy.
Nevertheless, a crowd quickly gathered
around her – in a light rain – with lots of
ooooohs and ahhhhs.
As the bidding began, we
were both anxious – what
if no one bid on the item?
Bidding for the six-hour trip
was fast and fierce though,
eventually topping out at
$1,100 – the second highest
bid of the entire auction.
The winning bidders were LaQuita and
Steve Allen (shown above on left with
John and me on right). The Allens own a
trucking firm, love all things automotive
and recently acquired a 1979 Rolls-Royce
Silver Shadow. They’re big contributors
to their community and a fun couple to
spend time with, as we quickly learned.
Our adventure was scheduled for a Sunday in late November. John fine-tuned
the Cloud mechanically, and detailed the
car once again in preparation for the ‘big
trip’.
Both the Cloud and the weather performed perfectly on the designated
date. Our route took us through miles
of winding back roads at a comfortable
pace. Our first stop after lunch was at
Brennan’s Winery in Comanche, where
the tasting room is located in the historic
McCrary House. The McCrary House
was built in 1879 and is registered with
the Texas Historical Commission.

After the wine tasting, we were treated
to a tour of the actual winery by owner
Pat Brennan, and were soon on our way
again to Rising Star Vineyards. The trip
to Rising Star should have been an easy
30 minutes, but we listened to ‘Myrtle’
the GPS, who ‘steered us wrong’. We
quickly realized that we weren’t in the
right neighborhood when the pavement
turned to dirt road. It was an easy matter
though to retrace our route and find our
own way (without Myrtle’s advice) to the
Rising Star Vineyards, arriving just in
time for a terrific class on the history of
wine-making by winery owner Michael
Oubre.
After a great time in Rising Star, we headed for our final stop of the tour in Bluff
Dale Vineyards. As we settled in at the
wine-tasting bar there, we were treated to
a spectacular Texas sunset – the perfect
complement for a cheese tray and Bluff
Dale’s delicious label. The breath-taking
views and peaceful serenity created the
storybook ending for a truly lovely day.
After dropping our guests off at their
home in Glen Rose, our trip totaled just
over 200 miles for the day, and too many
good memories to count.

Pumping air back into the replacement
600-16 bias tire from boot. Only a 600-16
fits the boot space but the owners manual
specifies 650-16. One of those situations
where maintaining cool is good...
Many owners have switched to radial
tires to improve the ride and handling.
And yes, radials do make a remarkable
difference. However, the wider profile
by Sneed Adams
H
aving owned Marque
for 37 years and driven him
almost 50,000 miles I have
worn out a few treads. When
the second rebuild was completed in 2002 we installed a
set of “Firestone Deluxe” bias
tires size 650x16 made by
Coker. These tires furnished
20,000 miles of service between 2002 and early 2009.
I never had a flat or any other
trouble. Other than the miles
and normal tread wear the
tire tread grooves were becoming misaligned. I replaced
these tires with new tires from
the same source. I put about
4,000 miles on the new tires.
However, as with any bias
tire, the steering on rough
roads or roads with uneven
grooves keeps your arms in
good muscle tone.
8 The Lone Star Lady • January–February 2010
of the radial will result in the steering
linkage rubbing hard against the inside
sidewall of the tire when turning full
lock. This can potentially damage the
sidewall of the tire. I became aware of a
new type of tire on the market which was
advertised as having a radial design with a
bias profile.
Keeping in mind that appearance is
important when striving to maintain
the original appearance of the car and
of course when having the car judged, I
investigated and found that the outside
dimensions of this radial were almost
identical to the 650x16 bias tires on the
car. I decided to have a go at this new
tire. I ordered 4 along with new tubes.
They were delivered by FedEx to my
front door. They were the same size.
They did have a different tread appearance and the business portion of the tire
was different as you would expect. The
road grip certainly appeared far superior
to the older Firestone design.
I took Marque to the nearby NTB and
asked for the Bentley Special hand installation process involving car owner participation. They were very accommodating
and I wound up doing most of the work.
They ran the machine to remove the old
tires and the balance machine. The remainder was all manual. Not a swift idea
to use the machine to install a tire with
a tube. The chance of the machine rim
runner pinching the tube is high. We
installed the new tires and tubes. It took
about two hours total which included
me manually removing and installing the
wheels. No air wrenches please.
The balance was easy. I removed the old
style Bentley bolt on balance weights and
installed modern weights on the inside
rim. The most any tire was out was 3 oz.
One was only 0.5 oz.
The tires looked nice. I took Marque up
the expressway to see how it would feel
and maybe blow the doors off a BMW
in the process. I am pleased to report
magnificent success in both endeavors.
The tires changed the ride and handling
quite noticeably. I was pleased.
We drove Marque across I-10 to San
Marcos for the After Holiday Party. 160
miles and a great ride. No more fighting
the grooves and a softer ride. Sunday
morning after a great party Saturday evening, we departed the hotel and headed
back to Katy. Anne took over driving
duty about half way. There was a stiff
breeze and Marque was being buffeted
about on the road. The breeze turned
into a stiff blow and Marque was taking
a beating. Anne decided to stop and let
me drive. She pulled off on the shoulder
and stopped. I exited the left door and
turned to walk around behind the car.
I was shocked! I opened the door and
informed Anne that it was not the wind.
We had a flat left rear tire.
This was the first flat tire in 37 years and
50,000 miles. I went about the chore of
removing the tire and installing the spare
which was a bias tire and it had only 15
pounds of air. Lucky for me I had my
trusty electric air pump. I was dismayed
when inspecting the flat tire. No nail.
Nothing. Hmmm? Tube failure?
and when contacting the rubber it caused
melting and thinning.
I installed in the new tires the tubes I had
removed from the bias tires after carefully inspecting them for any damage. I
returned home and took the other two
radials to NTB. Removed the tubes and
found the same blemishes and thinning.
It would have been only a few more days
before both of those tires would have
been flat.
The tubes were made in China.
Lesson learned. If you get new tubes for
your tires inspect them carefully.
Firestone Delux 650-16 Bias tire - original
equipment
650-16R Coker radial tire - made in
Mexico - Note more modern tread pattern
and different side wall where the rubber
meets the road
With the bias installed and pumped up,
we motored on down I-10 to Katy. We
pulled in the garage and upon exiting,
Anne stopped and said “What is that
hissing sound?” We walked around to
the right rear tire and it was rapidly going
flat as we watched in astonishment.
I jacked up the car and removed the offending tire as it continued to hiss in protest. Placed both flats in the back of the
pick-up and headed to NTB. Lucky for
me they were having a slow day. It only
took a few minutes to remove the tubes.
Both had what can best be described as
“strange blemishes” apparently left over
from the manufacturer that thinned
the wall and caused a tear to open. See
photo. The same mark and thinning
was on all four tubes. It appeared to be
some kind of device that was very hot

If that is not enough, you may like the fact that
we leave from there to motor over to the Blue
Bell Ice Cream Factory where heavenly tastings
and samples end our tour of the factory. The
ride home will take us by the Antique Rose Emporium where heirloom and antiqued roses and
flowers of all kinds can be viewed or purchased
at wholesale prices. T
rue we get together because we love cars,
but in-between the good conversations, the
great meals and the fellow PMC owners– we
manage to have quite a lot of fun. In the last
year our RROC’n ladies have had high tea in the
museum district of Dallas, walked the streets of
New Orleans with beignet dust on our chins,
shopped ourselves silly after a private fashion
show at Neiman’s of Austin, learned to hula at a
holiday luau in San Marcos and now...we are at
it again.
The Annual Spring Meet in College Station
March 25-28th is, of course, focused on fine
automobiles and the Texas roads they travel--but
many of the delights are sure to please as driving
tours run through some of the best Bluebonnets
in the state. The meet includes a trip to Lillian
Farms for lunch which means 230 acres of
awesome wildflowers in bloom and a Victorian
mansion with inlaid wood floors, and a wrap
around porch to view the landscape from.
With thorny lovelies in the boot, we head back
into town for dinner and to rest up because its
off on another wild ride where the destination is
the BNB Ranch and the fabulous hospitality of
Xavier and Alicia who know how to have a great
time. Following lunch stick around to watch
deer and cows or listen to the songbirds before
the Fox Hunt begins.
That night, as if it weren’t enough, we will pretty
up and make our way to the Miramont Country
Club--a French Mansion style facility on one
of Texas’ best green lawned golf courses with a
dreamy curved drive entrance and a renowned
chef in residence. The entire trip is surrounded by fine antique
shops, wildflower shows, and even a Monastery Miniature Horse Farm run by Franciscan Nuns!
Lots to see and do, we hope you will join us and
bring a friend, too.
