Road Ramblings
by Keith Olcha, Maverick Region President
J
uly is here and we’re into the second half of
the year’s activities. July and August are the
months that I tend to find more time for our
socials and tours, as I’m not a big fan of hotweather competitive driving. There is no relief
waiting to drive, it gets even hotter when you’re
driving, and very hot late in the afternoon after
you’ve driven. I use the extra free weekend or
two in July and August to work on summer projects. This year
one project is to install an additional oil cooler inside the left front
fender of my 1993 RSA to match the factory cooler on the right
side.
I’d like to take some time a cover two personal topics that
recently came up. First, Dennis Chamberlain mentioned that
some people were curious where my list of all-time favorite
Porsches came from and did I own or ever drive any of them?
Alas, the answer is not really. Of the 10 cars I listed, I’ve owned
none and I’ve actually driven two- the GT2 and a 1973 911 RS.
Seven more of the cars I have seen in person (and even touched a
few), but one of them- the 959 I have only seen in pictures,
magazines, and literature. Some of the racecars are in the Porsche
Factory Museum. Generally, think of me and my relationship
with those cars like that of the boy Ralph in “A Christmas Story”
and his obsession with the Red-Ryder Double-Action Carbine
BB-Gun.
The second topic concerns my obsession with my car
number of 27. I was asked why I have had that number for so long
and fight to use it in events. Lately, because I registered late for
events, I’ve had to run number 72 as my friend Rod Johnson from
Memphis Tennessee has claimed the number by registering ahead
of me. The funny thing is that besides having the same car
number we both also have identical racecars. My use of number
27 came about by accident actually, as it was assigned to me
several years ago in another region that had permanent car
number assignments and I stuck with it. Upon further research,
however, it has belonged to a few drivers who did credit to their
number: Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Gilles Villeneuve, John
Watson, and Patrick Tambay. Besides these Formula One drivers,
I plan on searching for other drivers with that same number from
the NASCAR and sports car ranks.
On the subject of area dealers, I would like to thank
Boardwalk Porsche for sponsoring our May club race at Texas
Motor Speedway, and Park Place Porsche for sponsoring our June
Drivers Education at Motor Sports Ranch. If it weren’t for our
sponsors, we would have to charge about 20% more money for
our various racetrack events. The money is not going to the clubit is going back to you. For example, the going rate nationally is
about $130 per day of driver’s education. That typically does not
include donuts and coffee, an event shirt, and water like we
provide. That would even add at least another $10 per day to that
$130 figure. Our Maverick events are running about $100 per day,
and that is directly attributed to our sponsors. Frankly, all of our
sponsors give out a lot of free advice and assistance also. I enjoy
their company and I truly feel all of our sponsors and Slipstream
advertisers deserve a thank you as well as our patronage. I know
that we live in an age of spin selling, commercialism, and stadiums
with corporate logos on them. And I will be the first to admit that
I’m thrifty (cheap okay?). However, if I can only save a few
dollars through the mail or the Internet on a particular part
versus our dealers and independent shops that provide the same
product I will opt to buy it locally or ask them if they can match
the price in other cases.
This month I’ll be at the McKinney Public Library Concours,
the autocross at Pennington Field, the Whitesboro Tour (my first
this year) and the post-parade dinner social. I’m hoping to get to
as many other events as possible, and I hope to meet some more
new members. Till next month then…
I saw my first Cayenne up close at the “May at Mayos” dinner
social. It belongs to Lee and Linda Wilkins. I was able to look at
it and sit in it. I know many of you have stopped by dealerships
to see them or take test drives, but for me I never feel I know
anything about a vehicle with a dealer test drive. I always feel like
I’m imposing unless I’m ready to buy, etc. And I feel overwhelmed
by the presence of a sales representative sitting with me or I
wonder how long I should stay out, etc. Sometimes these 15minute drives just give me sensory overload if you know what I
mean. For a vehicle whose purpose is more defined, I would
probably get a better feel for the Cayenne with a “day-in-the-life”
type test-drive. I’d be able to get everyone in my family to try it
out and run a few errands and try the roads around my house
instead of the test roads around a given dealership.

Curves Ahead
by Matt Platts, Editor
I
finally did it, I drove my own car at Texas
Motor Speedway! What a thrill do drive on
the same high-banks that you see talented and
famous professionals drive on TV. The extreme
angle of the banking actually makes driving at
speed almost effortless, it gives you a chance to
relax in-between turning through the curves in
the infield and making your way through the
chicane on the front straight (it’s really a quad-oval). I only
participated in the DE for one day, that was plenty to get my feet
wet on a new track. My brakes fared well too, I really didn’t use as
much as I thought I might. I guess I’m just not as fast as those guys
who go through a set of brakes in one day out there!
June has been a very busy month for me so far and it doesn’t
look like it’s going to let up anytime soon. Besides spending all of
my free time for the past 5 days working on Slipstream, I have
also been preparing my car for the trip to Parade in Tampa
(Zephyrhills or Wesley Chapel would be more accurate). No, I’m
not talking about my 924S, I’m talking about my tow-vehicle, a
‘94 Caprice! Since I decided to drive to Florida, I wanted to take
a car that had working air-conditioning, and wouldn’t beat me up
for a 1,200 mile (each way) drive. While my 924S isn’t anywhere
near as stiff as many of the more “prepped” cars I know, it would
still be a bit uncomfortable for a long trip like that. My weekends
in May and June have been spent doing things like installing a
class III hitch, electric brake controller, and air-bags to help my
suspension on the Caprice. That, along with many other things to
get the car ready for the long-haul, has kept me quite busy. I’m
looking forward to an event-free haul from the DFW area to the
Tampa area in a couple of days.
When I return from Parade, I will begin working on another
“special edition” of Slipstream - a Parade edition. You can look
forward to several articles and lots of pictures that will document
the goings-on at Parade ‘03. There are many people from the
Maverick Region who will be there, I expect each of them to write
an article about how much fun they had at Saddlebrook.
One good reason to attend Parade ‘03 is to prepare for our
own Parade ‘04 right here in Fort Worth next July. You won’t have
any excuse not to attend the ‘04 Parade. Hosting Parade will be a
lot of work, but so far, it sounds like it will be one of the best ever!
Maverick Minutes
by Mimi Spreen
T
he June Board meeting was held on
Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at the home of Keith
and Karen Olcha.
Attendees included, Mimi Spreen, Lanean
Hughes, Keith Olcha, Matt Platts, Teri and
Charlie Davis, Cody Sears, Wendy Shoffit,
Dennis Chamberlain, Michael Wingfield, Noby
Takahashi, Mike Brodigan, John Sandusky and
Bob Knight.
The meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM with Keith's
'Round the Room
Dennis - Cafe Vienna worked great for the May Happy Hour.
The food was good and inexpensive. You could bring your own
beer or wine and the location was good. 35 people showed up.
This month's HH will be at Chammps in Addison and the HH in
July will be at the Main Event in Plano.
John Sandusky - DE at TMS was pretty successful. There
were 60 people in attendance for the DE and 70 for the CR.
Cody - AX and TT went well with 37 in attendance in
Pennington. The course was short with top times being in the
30-second range. Cody requested a final answer for AX and TT
for equipment that Miatas must have to run. A motion was made
as follows: "Move to allow cars to run top-up in a convertible, but
if you have a Roll Bar, you can run with top down without arm
restraints for AX and TT only. Sunroofs must be closed and Targa
tops installed.” Motion was seconded and passed.
Noby - Insurance paperwork is current.
8
Lanean – Club Race (CR) went very well even though
volunteers were still needed. Everyone did double duty to cover
the volunteer positions. Have received many emails thanking us
for a well-done job. We had a lot of rookies and the DE'rs were
excited to see the CR's. Overall the event was a success. CR held a
kids AX on Monday, which was a huge success. The kids loved it
and the parents were glad to see their kids given an opportunity
to have some fun. We need to be sensitive of who our sponsors are
and what they're doing for us.
Teri - Parade shirts have arrived and will be delivered at
Father's Day for those who ordered them. Payment is required
upon receipt of shirt. Linda Bambina is heading up the games at
Father's Day.
Charlie – Proposed a digital display and bar code reader for
our AX to improve the scoring system. Would like approval at a
later board meeting.
Bob - we're good!!
Mike Brodigan - Slipstream is full for advertising and can't
take any more right now. Our newest advertiser is a welder out of
Denton who makes roll cages, Bob Johannesen.
Matt - Slipstream labeled as we speak by Wendy, James,
Tinker and Jan. Andy has made it so easy for us, thanks! A
reminder that deadline for Slipstream articles and information is
the 12th of each month.
Motion made to adjourn the meeting at 8:28. Motion
seconded and passed.
The next board meeting July, 8th.
Happy Hour at Speed Zone
by Dennis Chamberlain
C
The new member turnout included Tom Mahon (993),
Ted Vitek (a 914 owner), and Jerry and Mary Hiatt (a new C4S).
Ted Vitek
And finally, since DE and
autocross are always hot
topics at happy hours, it was
great to have Brian and Trisha
Henderson and Mike and
Sandi Lapp in attendance to
help in answering questions.
So despite my grave concerns,
the happy hour turned out
just fine.
The plan was for
us to use Café Vienna’s
patio, since the deli
itself was far too small
for our group. So
naturally the threat of
thunderstorms for the
evening was a major
concern. This, coupled
with dire predictions of
traffic jams from the
Byron Nelson next
door, made me wonder
what I possibly could
have been thinking in
Jerry & Mary Hiatt
setting up this particular event. But the thunderstorms never materialized, and there
were no problems with the traffic.
It was great visiting
with Ernie Swersky, who is
a retired physician (family
practice). I shamelessly
pumped him for free medical advice for a good part
of the evening. It occurred
to me that no one has ever
asked me any tax questions
at any of the happy hours
(Whew!).
Ted Vitek is an old friend
of Joe McGlohen’s, and he
entertained Tom Mahon
and me with some pretty
amazing stories about Joe
in his younger days.
afé Vienna is a small deli in
Irving, a block from the Four
Seasons. OK, planning a
happy hour at a deli without a liquor
license raised a few eyebrows, but as it
turned out, the 35 attendees seemed to
like the idea of bringing their own
beer and wine. It certainly made for
Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain,
an inexpensive evening. I brought a $9
Tinker Edwards, and Mark Gluck
bottle of Red Rioja from Sam’s, and I
was surprised to find it empty after just one glass. I figure either
Mark Gluck got into it, or Café Vienna had some kind of major
evaporation problem.
For our July 17 happy
hour, we’re going to the Main
Event in Plano, a place that
is managed by Maverick
member Mark Gomez.

May at Mayo’s
by Keith Olcha
E
For me besides meeting several new members and chatting
up club activities there were two highlights that stand out. First,
Linda and Alan Bambina brought their newly acquired 1994 911
Speedster. They did not make many of these 964 narrow-body
low-windshield special edition cabriolets. Theirs is an attractive
example in white.
ach year in May the Maverick Region gathers for a Saturday
night dinner social at Mayo performance in Euless. The folks
at Mayo’s are kind enough to clean up the workshop, set up
tables inside and host our evening. Of course it’s always fun to see
whose car is in the shop and why.
The other highlight was the Cayenne S that Linda and Lee
Wilkins brought. They took delivery of one of the first Cayenne
S’s in the area. Truthfully, I’ve not had the opportunity to get over
to a dealer and examine the Cayenne in great detail. Many of us
took the opportunity to check it out closely and examine things
like the engine, trunk, tool kit, etc. You can tell it is in the Porsche
family tree. All in all it was another great evening without a big
agenda, just food, friends, and Porsches.
This year there were about 70 people who were there to talk up
Mavericks, Porsches, and eat fried chicken catered from Babe’s Fried
Chicken in Roanoke. If you are not familiar with Babes, it is well
known for its large portions of moist fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and the rest of the trimmings. It was a mild evening in May,
and soon after the meal, most people were out and about in the
parking lot looking over and talking about the cars.

There were 70 cars
registered, with more
drivers signed up due
to sharing of cars with
a driver change during
Monday’s enduro. Like
the March race at
Texas World Speedway
in College station earlier in the year, there
were two main run
groups this time named
the Stars and the
Smiley Faces, with several classes grouped
together in each run
group. The Smiley
faces included GT1-4,
GTC1-3, and stock
classes B,C,D.

Stars included stock classes E through J, and GT5. The overall sprint
race winner for the Stars was John Crosby, in his E stock 944 Turbo,
while the overall winner sprint race for the Smiley Faces was Randy
Roatch, in his GT2R class 911. In Monday’s enduro, the overall winner for the Stars was Ken LaBorde, in his E stock 1989 944 Turbo,
while in the Smiley Faces
it was again Randy
Roatch. Mavericks Jay

were rookies who

The racing was
great; the weather
was great, and the
food and hospitality
(banquet, snacks,

water, etc.) were
great. The course we run is basically the same as the course the
American LeMans Series ran here three years ago when the Audi
R8’s and the rest of the cast came to town. It involves using
almost the entire NASCAR oval including an infield road-course
that is entered after turn 2 and exited to get back onto the oval
before turn 3. It also includes a chicane after the Start-Finish line
on the main straight to slow the cars down for oval turns 1 and 2.
The total length is 2.5miles. The fastest cars were lapping just
under 90 seconds yielding average speeds over 90 miles per hour
per lap. Those kinds of average lap speeds imply 150-160 mph
before braking for the
chicane on the front
straight and the entry
to the infield road
course on the back.

T
he third annual Maverick Region Memorial Day weekend
club race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth took place
this past May. The weather was perfect and the schedule for
the three-day event followed typical club racing protocol: Practice
Saturday with fun starts/races, qualifying and Sprint (30 minutes)
races on Sunday, and qualifying and 1 hour enduros (with mandatory pit stop) on Monday. Once again the region offers a sincere

In addition to the on-track racing
there was also a Driver’s Education run
in conjunction with the club race during
the weekend and a Porsche concours featuring street cars and race cars, as well as
a kid’s autocross challenge. My only low
point for the weekend was when the officials pulled me out of the line for the kid’s
autocross and told me I was too old and
too fat to compete against them. How do
you expect me to ever win? Oh well, as
they say- that’s racing.

exas Motor Speedway is an impressive facility, and just being
there is exciting enough. Taking your own car out on the track
is even more impressive, and something that everyone involved
in our DE program should do. “Drive more tracks”, we say, “it
helps you improve.” But up until now, we had reserved this event for
experienced drivers – those that had at least been solo qualified at
some other track. The reasoning behind it was that a good portion of
our instructor corps is involved in the Club Race, and not available to
instruct. We just could not support a regular instructed DE event.
Early planning for this year was that things would stay the same.

So we recruited some of

non-solo drivers. Since
this was our first
attempt at this at TMS,
we decided to not

Out went the call for the newly added instructed portion of the
DE, and the response was great. We had to limit the number of
instructed students to match the number of instructors we had.
Change had happened. But what a success we had with it. We were
able to gain valuable instructing time at the track, and also open the
facility to those that might have missed out. Those who drove the
track were greatly impressed. It turned out to be a wonderful event
on all levels. My thanks to those instructors who made this change
happen.
This leaves us in a much better prepared position for the Parade
DE at TMS next year. If you’ve been thinking that you’d like to drive
TMS in a regular DE format, Parade 2004 will be your chance.
Finally, I’d like to thank those on the Club Race and DE
committees who helped make this event successful. And a special
thanks to Ray Luedecke for filling in for me while I was away Saturday
and Sunday. And thanks Noby for handling the pace car while I was
away, then letting me back in the driver’s seat when I got back.
What a time that was. In a short span, I experienced both
profound sadness and unexpected happiness - all resulting from
change.

Club Race Show & Shine
by Eric Erz
M
I was happy to see that quite a few cars showed up, even with the
weather looking a little questionable in the morning. We even had a
couple of vintage Ford Thunderbirds and an early Ford Mustang Cobra
come out to join our event.
Mike Stafford with his 911 SC
Tom Cychosz brought out his red 1986 911 turbo (930). Because
it is red, this car immediately catches everyone’s attention, but the closer
you look, the more amazing it becomes. Tom’s car has only 18,000 miles
on the odometer. Everywhere you look, the car appears to be near
perfect, but of course, Tom indicated that there were still a few things he
needed to do to make the car right. The thing that really caught me was
the tool kit in front. This is the only car I have seen with the original
blister pack of fuses still in the kit. Other cars I enjoyed were CJ Graham’s
red 1997 C4S (love those fenders) and Rob Turner’s white 1976 911
Turbo. I was obviously not alone, since Rob also got a majority vote for
the Favorite street car.
All the cars were incredible, but a few really stood out in my
opinion. Paul Norwood brought out his tangerine 1970 911E. This car is
all original, down to the woven floor mats, which I had never seen before.
On top of this, the condition of everything in this car is top notch. If you
ever get the chance, be sure to stop and take a look.

onday morning arrived, and it was not raining. I was glad, since
it had rained the previous two mornings, and I was not looking
forward to getting my freshly-cleaned car dirty on the drive to
Texas Motor Speedway. This was to be the third annual Maverick Region
Show and Shine, held in conjunction with the PCA Club Race and DE.
I would love to comment on the all the cars, but due to limited
space, I need to get to the winners. For the streetcars, there were classes
for Favorite, Cleanest, and Best Paint. The winner of Favorite car was
Rob Turner with his white 1976 930. For Cleanest car, the winner was
Frank Briggs, with his black 1979 911 SC, and for Best Paint, the winner
was Mike Stafford, with his black 1982 911 SC. For the Racecars, there
were classes for Favorite, Best Prepared, and Fastest Looking. Wade
Kolody took home two of the awards for Favorite Race car and Best
Prepared with his red 1976 3.0 liter 911 (I liked the Giant NOS bottle in
the front trunk). For the Fastest Looking Car, Wayne Brown took home
the award with his maroon and white 1975 914. This car looks quick

Club Race Kudos
Kudos received by the Maverick Region for a job well done!
Gerry and Myron Krupp (DE #515 & 935): Wendy and everyone
else who made this weekend happen, thanks a million!!!!! . We had a
blast. Y’all did a great job.
Dan Gage (DE #158): Lanean, I would like to thank you and all
the others who worked so hard at pulling off the event this weekend.
It was excellent. I personally had a blast and I know so many others
that did too. I think one of the highlights for my family was the kids’
autocross – the kids really ate it up. Landyn really focused on not
hitting those cones and by the 3rd lap – he did it! What fun. I look
forward to next year.......
Brian Bailey (CR #15): Hi Wendy, just wanted to let you know
that I thought you guys did an excellent job running the Club Race
this weekend. It seemed to run as smoothly as any I've been to in
recent memory and I've done a lot of ’em all over the country.
Definitely a job well done. Can't wait until next year.
Glen Gatlin (CR #996): Thank You Lanean! Wonderful time and
very well done! It was really nice to be a participant and enjoy it
thoroughly from that perspective. Your whole group just did a
tremendous job!
Doug Molny (CR #179): I just wanted to take a moment to thank
everyone involved in the Club Race at TMS. There are few words to
describe the level of professionalism, decorum, and friendship.
Where do you start to express thanks? James Shoffit lent me his dust
cover off of his wheel, Jimmy Hays changed my cracked rotors,
helped bleed the brakes and ran my pit crew, Jim Buckley and Bryan
Henderson's track advice was extremely helpful. Dale Gates lent me
some tools, oil and a few other things I forgot to bring. The corner
workers did a perfect job keeping us all safe and running smoothly.
Jorge Vargas was under my car several times he really knows 911's, I
am sorry he broke his tranny and could not compete in the enduro (I
know what that feels like!). Lanean and Wendy what can you say? I
wish I had half their energy; they worked so hard! Great job ladies,
thank you! TMS was a great experience and my family had a very
exciting weekend. The national stewards and scrutineers also did a
super job keeping us in line and on the track.
Jay Walker (CR #525): What Doug said & more! I'm afraid since
this was my first CR that I will become spoiled ;) It was so well run &
organized plus everybody seemed to be having a great time. Kudos to
everyone involved. They were wet & soggy part of the weekend but
they were still smiling & helpful. Great Job!
Dave Frick (Volunteer): First, let me express how impressed Jean
and I were about the event this past weekend. To pull together such a
huge undertaking and have it come off with minimal problems,
speaks well of the professionalism of all involved. I have no doubt that
next years parade will set new marks for others to try and meet.
F. Graydon Thorne (CR #99): Thanks for a great weekend. You
guys did an awesome job.
Wayne Brown (CR #946): Lanean, a special thank you for all
your efforts for a great weekend - it's got to be a big sigh of relief
for you now. if you will, please forward a big 'THANK YOU' to the
multitude of volunteers that allow us to race. Corner workers, safety
crews, timing tower & announcing, grid, gate control, security,
hospitality / registration, and of course the local & national sponsors.
ALL those people who gave up their time and holiday weekend THANK YOU.
David Attanasio (DE #91) Just a note to say thanks for putting
together yet another 1st class event and for allowing me to participate
in the DE on Monday. From the corner worker side of the wall, I
always enjoyed the organization of all MRPCA events, the results
speak for themselves. Same from the driver side, always a great day at
the track.
Bruce M. Hecht (DE #7 & Future Rookie Club Racer): Ditto to
all including all of our sponsors. The DE portion of the event went
very smoothly and I heard everyone say what a great time they all had.
Everyone was generous with their tools and know how, as I unexpectedly has to change front pads and rotors (they were new 10 days
earlier), and I had plenty of tools and assistance. Thanks again.
Monda Degan (DE #651): Dear Wendy, Lanean and John, Thank
you to all three of you for the great instructed DE while the Club Race
was going on this weekend. I believe ya'll get better every year. This
weekend was organized and enjoyable, and able to have seat time at
an unusual track vs. MSR and TWS. Ray did a great job at the morning drivers meeting as well. Thank you all for your hard work and all
the volunteers that helped you. Annette, Dee, and others.
Kevin Procaccino (CR #419) To Lanean, Wendy, and the entire
Maverick Region, I too just wanted to say thanks for a great weekend
and another first class event. We even had A/C at the dinner on
Sunday:-). I would also like to thank all the volunteers and corner
workers who gave up their 3 day holiday weekend so we could have
the pleasure of playing at speed!
David Baker (CR #141): Thank you so much for all of the
incredible things you do. You all make it look so easy, it must be a
multi tasking lady thing [ed. to Lanean and Wendy]...but it is just
incredible. Thank you!
Donna Amico (Club Race Scrutineer) THANK YOU, Lanean,
for your always wonderful Texas hospitality and great organization!
Many, many drivers felt this was really a smooth running event, and
your staff always seemed to be there when anyone was looking for
them.
Bruce Boeder (Club Race Steward): Maverick region puts on a
great race. Lanean Hughes knows how to put on a party, and the
entire event is a party. Wendy Shoffit did a great job as registrar. Bill
Kasdorf was the best steward's assistant I've ever had. The corner
workers were great. Mary Coney in race control was excellent. All in
all a great event.
The weather was excellent and the steward, of course, took
credit for that. Despite early predictions of heat and humidity, with
thunderstorms, the weather proved to be outstanding.
Plans are already in place to run this race next year as the first
ever race held as part of the Parade (as opposed to in conjunction
with the Parade). I'd suggest that all attend, if for no other reason
than to attend the Saturday Victory party, which is planned for the
ballroom in the Speedway club, high above NASCAR turn 2. Yes, the
Speedway Club has Oban and may even put it on tap next summer
for the event.

Autocross Virgin Gets His Feet Wet
by Joe Yoder
A
s a few know, this autocross virgin got his first taste of life
between the cones on Sunday. And it was good, real good.
So good that I want more.
Thanks to Cody Sears, Mark Steele, Wendy Shoffit, Charlie
Davis, John Swanson and all the great folks I've failed to mention
for helping this AX virgin get his feet wet, literally and
figuratively. It was one wild and rewarding day.
It started when I left my house in NE Dallas at 5:15am so I
could absolutely, positively, make a 7:30am start time in Mineral
Wells, which is about 100 miles west of my house. I was not sure
how long it would take and Charlie Davis said they always start
promptly at 7:30. Well, I arrive at 6:45 at a rain-soaked autocross
course, and it's still coming down. Of course, there ain't nobody
there. So I crank up some Allman Brother's. At about 7:30am a
pick-up races up and it's the legendary Cody Sears, perennialTop-Time-Of-The-Day guy and, fortunately for us Teeners, a real
914 guy. Cody makes a quick run around the course and tells me
it's doable.
with real racin' tires and a whole bunch of 911s. Oh well, Charlie
had warned me. This is going to be real embarrassing.
I'm in the second run group and so I get to go watch the first
group kill cones in the rain. Everybody's handling it pretty well
and times are in the high-70's to low 90's. A couple of donuts but
nothing really nuts.
...is nice enough to remind me that
Autocrossing is an all forward-motion sport...
The first session's over so now it's my turn. I remind Charlie
that I need an instructor. He puts me in the last half of my run
group so I can get Mark Steele for an instructor. Nice guy with
nerves that match his name. He asks, "You ever done this before?"
"Nope." He calmly states, "Rain's a great way to learn how to go
smooth. We'll work on getting a rhythm, staying long-range
focused and just take it real easy." I notice that he's got a whiteknuckle grip on the door strap and his feet are firmly planted on
the floor board. He tightens his helmet's strap.
Charlie says, "Go"! I don't remember much of the first run.
We make it around at just under a hundred, 96 seconds. No cones
or course workers killed or bent valves. We're happy. The next
four times were better with a best of just over 87.
Mark's happy. He's gettin' out alive.
I'm happy, The YODSTER's still running. I haven't ever done
this because I knew I'd hurt my car and she's my daily driver. If I
bust her on Sunday, I'm walking on Monday.
He also states that everybody's kinda gettin' around slowly
(the real pro's are at a nearby motel [there ain't no hotels in
Mineral Wells]) and so they won't be out for a while. "Ok, I ain't
goin' nowhere."
At about 8ish a couple of people show up. About 8:30 a few
more. By 9 it's looking like a real happening. Charlie Davis
arrives in the Truckster (the mobile AX and TT equipment and
press box sorta thing). Cody comes over and asks a group of us
who are too stupid to come in out of the rain what we think: run
or go home? The majority rules: "We're runnin." They start
setting up the timing equipment and we start walking the course.
I get registered with Wendy Shoffit. She's a very attractive
and patient lady who gives me a helmet and sells me a helmet
liner. "Don't want everybody gettin' cooties from the previous
users." I didn't know personal hygiene was such an issue for
autocrossers. She asks for a car number. "Anybody got 43"? "No,
it's yours." Man this is great. 43 was good enough for Richard
Petty, the king, (yea, wrong sport) and it's good enough for me.
Charlie and Wendy total up all my car's modification points
and as expected, I'm in one of the big dog classes, Class 15. I'm
in the same class as John Swanson's 3.2 flared 914 which he's shod
22
So, it's back out on the course watching other peoples' runs.
It's stopped raining and the course is drying out. Cody goes first
and sets what looks like an unbeatable time in the 69's. (Much to
Cody's dismay, Rocky Johnson shows up really late in a well
prep'd 968 and beats his 69:.) Most everybody's in the 70s and
80s and people are getting happy.
I climb back in the Teener, and Mark agrees to go a couple
more laps. Now we're in the low 80s and feeling good. Mark
says, "You're on
your own. Stay
controlled".
Now, I'm all
alone. I make it
through the first
slalom fine and
head for the 90
degree box. Wait,
where's
Mark's
"BRAKE" signal?
It's not there and
Myra Sutton waits at a slightly-soggy grid
We don't break for lunch because there are so few people and
the weather's miserable. The fact that the traveling hot dog
vendor didn't have any hot dogs ready yet provided additional
incentive to keep running.
Brian Petri enjoying his run.
First run by myself: 86:XX. Charlie's waiting at the start grid
and is nice enough to remind me that Autocrossing is an all
forward-motion sport. "Thanks, I'll remember that". Darn, if I
can get through that stupid box maybe I could get into the
seventies, my selfprescribed goal.
Next run, I
brake before I reach
the box and then
accelerate out of it.
I'm bobbin' and
weaving and making
pretty good time.
Ok, let's nail this chicane and I hit third
for the first time
Shelly Burbank
and now I'm flying.
But wait, where's the gate? God Bless America! Now I'm floppin'
around like a perch on a cane pole. I get her back under control and
finish with a 78: something. Wow. "Now, iff'n I can avoid that out-ofcontrol deal, wouldn't that be grand", I say to myself.
This is my last run, and I'm really focusing on getting it right.
I'm through the slalom, out of the box, through the big sweeper
and I'm headed for the hairpin turn that has been eatin' my
lunch. I swing real
wide right and slow
down a bit and I
turn that sucker just
like the fast guys,
and I circle it tight
and now I am
aimed straight at
the last slalom.
Wooo. I am through
it and headed for
Jasmine is “ready”
the chicane. I nail
it again and I'm back in third and the YODSTER's screaming, but
this time I ease off and just wiggle her through all the gates and
I'm rounding for home. Clean run: 77:45 or something like that.
Man, what a ride. Wendy gives me a big thumbs up!
there's The Box and a bunch of cones and I'm going way too fast.
Panicville. I lock'em up, stop just short of the cones, and kill the
engine. ARGH. Re-fire, back-up and roar off. Fortunately, I had
been really watching the guys/gals go through my area of the
chicane during the second set of runs and how the really fast folks
exit that and make for a chicane and the last few turns. I try to
emulate what the fast ones were doing.
I ask if I should stick around and help clean up but Wendy
says they'll have plenty of people to help. So, I say my good byes,
particularly to John Swanson who's been mentoring me in the pits
and I pack up. I call Dr. Jean, the wife, and tell her that I've had a
great time and most importantly, The YODSTER's still running so
she doesn't need to come tow me home yet again. And I head east
with a real possum-eatin'-bumble-bees-kinda grin.
Was I a contender? Nope. Am I close to being a contender?
Nope. Did I have a great time and finally learn what my little ole
914's all about? ABSOLUTELY!
A set of Kuhmo's and re-attaching my front roll bar are in the
immediate future. I've been re-playing the course over and over
in my head and I just know I can pick up another second or two
if they just don't change the course. ;-)
I’m definitely into this.

Kids Autocross
by Mike de Jong
After a thorough tech
inspection
by
Chief
Inspector Joel Nannis and
assistant yours truly, the
kids were given a demonstration run through the
grueling course designed
Mike and Emily de Jong
by Club Race Chair Lanean
Hughes. As the evening progressed, it was obvious that some
kids paid attention! Others received directional help from the
many parents who volunteered to work the course.

The first run group
included BMX bike and
scooter riders. After
posting disappointing
times on their first of
three runs with the
wheeled contraptions,
most, including my
daughter Emily, abandoned them for the sure
footed cornering of their
sneakers. Giving Emily
an instructor assisted
run, I quickly learned
that having daddy on
Joel organizes “grid”
the outside of the skid
pad turn was worth about a second. This group was quick,
and TTOD was set on foot.
Maybe I’ll try that at MW
when the weather cools off
again!
Who needs Red Bull?
Some kids preferred to
stay with their wheels, and
there were several good
cornering displays on
bicycles, scooters, and
four-wheelers. The corner
workers award went to
the little guy on the John
Deere for demonstrating
outstanding vehicle control
A
n impressive display of racing strategy and skill was
demonstrated at the Texas Motor Speedway by the
children who participated in the Kid’s Autocross, held
in conjunction with the Maverick Region Club Race. Sixteen
enthusiastic (and patient) kids participated in/on vehicles
ranging from Razor scooters to bicycles to John Deere
four-wheelers. The age and
experience of the competitors ranged from “I don’t
need any help!!!” to “Daddy
hold my hand.”
Guidance and cheering always helps!
and knowing the course.
When the activities concluded, all the kids received participation awards and cool Club Race gifts courtesy of Lanean.
Thanks for all the help from the volunteers and parents who
made this a fun event for the kids. Special thanks to Annette
(registration & scoring), Joel (tech and checkered flag), Michele
(timing), and Lanean (organization and course design).
Congratulations to the participants and top three finishers:
1st place Andrew Lopez, Mongoose Bike (and on foot), 10.85 seconds
2nd place: Ricky Randall, BMX Bike (and on foot), 11.30 seconds
3rd place: Brandon Brown, Mongoose Bike (and on foot), 11.77 seconds

Remember to Renew!
Contrary to magazines which start reminding you to
renew 13 years before your current subscription
expires, PCA only sends out one renewal notice. If
you do not pay your dues before (or *slightly* after)
your membership expires, you will be dropped from
the national roster.
That means you'll no longer get Panorama,
Slipstream, or first priority into DEs! PCA makes it
easy to renew with both mail-in forms and online
registration. Besides, it's only $42 per year!
If you are thinking of not renewing, please contact
one of the board members on page 4 so we can
know what we're doing that isn't suiting you. If we
don't know that there's a problem, we can't fix the
problem. We want you to be happy in the club and
are doing our very best to schedule a variety of events
for everyone.
Help us help you and RENEW!
