Price Fifteen Shillings. r CLONDALKIN—CLOXSKEAGH. 1387 CLOXDALKIK C L O N D A L K I N , a n i n l a n d parish a n d village, partly in Newcastle, b u t chietiy in Uppercross b a r o n y , D u b l i n county, 4 ^ miles S. W . from D u b l i n , comprising a n area of 4.777 acres, of w h i c h 44 are in t h e village. Population, 2,430 ; of village, 4 7 4 , inhabiting 89 houses. I t is situated near the n i n t h lock of the G r a n d C a n a l , and close to the line of t h e G r e a t S o u t h e r n a n d "Western R a i l w a y , of which it is t h e first station from D u b l i n . I t was anciently named C l u a i n - D o l c a n , a n d bv the D a n e s D u n - a w l e y . I t s ancient r o u n d t o w e r bespeaks its a n t i q u i t y . A m o n a s t e r y also e x i s t e d here, of w h i c h S t . C r o n a n Mochua was the first abbot. I n 806 a palace of Anlaff. the D a n i s h K i n g of D u b l i n , stood here, and w a s destroyed b y the Irish u n d e r Ciaran, t h e son of R o n a n . In 1171 Roderic O ' C o n n o r , K i n g of L e i n s t e r . aided b y the forces of CFRuarck a n d O* Carroll, were here opposed t o S t r o n g b o w , o n his w a y t o Dublin, b u t had to v i e l d to t h e l a t t e r . T h e village consists chiefly of one irregular street, of small b u t n e a t l y built houses a n d cottages. T h e only public buildings a r e the P a r i s h Church, a small plain m o d e r n building, a n d a n e a t R o m a n Catholic Chapel. I t has almshouses for destitute widows, established by t h e Rev. D r . R e a d e . t h e r e c t o r : also a P o o r S h o p , Repository, Dorcas I n s t i t u t i o n , Lying-in H o s p i t a l , and Dispt nsary, a P a r o c h i a l a n d t w o National Schools, and a Constabulary P o l i c e S t a t i o n . I t has paper a n d oil mills, a n d there were formerly powder mills a t L i t t l e C o r k a g h , w h i c h ceased w o r k i n g in 1815. N e a r the m a i l coach road to Naas is t h e m o n a s t e r y of Blount J o s e p h , p l e a s a n t l y situated in elevated g r o u n d , established in 1813, a n d consists of a prior, chaplain, a n d several m o n k s , w h o m a i n t a i n themselves b y t h e i r own industry and t h e profits of a school. T h e a n c i e n t r o u n d t o w e r , before referred t o , is t h e nearest s t r u c t u r e of the k i n d to t h e metropolis, a n d is i n good p r e s e r v a t i o n . I t stands 100 feet h i g h , a n d is 1.5 feet in d i a m e t e r , covered w i t h a conical roof of stone. N e a r to i t is t h e r u i n s of t h e ancient m o n a s t e r y , e x t e n d i n g 120 feet in l e n g t h , and at t h e entrance t o t h e village are the ruins of a fortitied castle. Roebuck, a d i s t r i c t half a m i l e further on. is covered w i t h elegant m a n s i o n s and demesnes, t h e principal of w h i c h is t h e castle of t h a t n a m e , t h e seat o f E . P . W e s t b y , esq., which, when originally erected, was strongly fortified, t h e residence of L o r d T r i m l e s t o n , and occupied by J a m e s I I . and the D u k e of B e r w i c k , when encamped in t h e neighbourhood. Milltown is less than half a mile to t h e right of Clonskeagh, in the parish of M i l l t o w n , Uppercross harony, a n d comprises a n area of le'5 acres. Population 863, inhabiting 132 houses. It contains a small C h u r c h , dedicated t o S t . P h i l i p , a n d a small R o m a n Catholic Chapel. I t s vicinity is adorned w i t h m a n v pleasing- villas a n d respectable residences, t h e p r i n c i p a l of w h i c h are Millloicn-park and Fairyland. T h r e e o m n i b u s e s ply to C l o n s k e a g h from D u b l i n several t i m e s a day. T h e nearest P o s t Office receivers a r e M i l l t o w n , R a n e l a g h , and D u n d r u n i . L U C A N , an inland t o w n and parish in N e w c a s t l e barony, D u b l i n c o u n t y , seven miles W, from D u b l i n , comprisi n g a n a r e a of 1,126 acres, of w h i c h 3 3 are in t h e t o w n . P o p u l a t i o n of parish, 1,009, of t o w n , 578, inhabiting 79 houses, m i d w a y b e t w e e n t h e G r e a t W e s t e r n and M i d l a n d G r e a t W e s t e r n R a i l w a y s and t h e Royal a n d G r a n d C a n a l s (distance a b o u t o n e m i l e from each), a n d u p o n t h e high road to G a l w a y a n d Sligo. A l t e r t h e Conquest t h i s place was settled on Richard de Peche, one of t h e early English a d v e n t u r e r s ; and in 1220 •was in t h e possession of W a r y n de P e c h e , w h o founded t h e m o n a s t e r y of S t . C a t h e r i n e , in the immediate vicinity. I n the reign of R i c h a r d I I . it belonged to t h e R o k e b y family, and in t h e s i x t e e n t h century Was t h e p r o p e r t y of the Sarsfield family, a n d of W i l l i a m , t h e distinguished general of t h a t n a m e , w h o forfeited i t for his adherence to t h e cause of J a m e s I I . I t is n o w t h e property of t h e Vesey Colthurst family. T h e t o w n is prettily s i t u a t e d in a fertile vale, on t h e south b a n k of t h e R i v e r Liffey, which is here crossed by a g r a n i t e bridge of o n e a r c h , w i t h stone parapet, supported by iron pallisades, and consists of one wide a n g u l a r street of small b u t n e a t houses and cottages, m o s t of which are let in s u m m e r to visitors a n d invalids. I t s public buildings a r e , t h e Parish Church, a n e a t structure w i t h a t o w e r a n d spire, a large n e w R o m a n Catholic Chapel, a n d a W e s l e y a n C h a p e l . It has a Dispensary a n d a Loan F u n d : a L e n d i n g Library, C h u r c h , and N a t i o n a l Schools. I t is a Chief Constabulary P o l i c e S t a t i o n , and P e t t y Sessions are held every alternate T u e s d a y . L u c a n is noted for its spas, sulphurous and c h a l y b e a t e , and is m u c h resorted to for its efficacy in scorbutic, bilious, a n d r h e u m a t i c c o m p l a i n t s ; in t h a t called t h e " b o i l i n g spring,' 1 t h e w a t e r , on analysis, has been found t o contain in every t w o gallons, 70 grains of crystallized carbonate of soda, 20 of c a r b o n a t e of l i m e , ]h of c a r b o n a t e of magnesia, 2 of s i l e x , 6.4 of m u r i a t e of soda, a n d 14 of sulphur. T h e scenery a r o u n d Lucan is delightfully varied, a n d in part r o m a n t i c a l l y beautiful, p a r t i c u l a r l y W o o d l a n d s , t h e seat of Colonel W h i t e , v..p., a n d t h e grounds of W e s t o n p a r k , i n w h i c h is t h e w e l l - k n o w n a n d much-frequented waterfall, called the M S a l m o n Leap;*" which consists of a succession of rocky ledges on t h e Liffey, a v e r which t h e fish d a r t at one bound. It forms a beautiful cascade, t h e p i c t u r e s q u e effect of which is greatly increased by t h e rich a n d lofty wooded b a n k s of the r i v e r , a n d t h e adjoining tastefully embellished demesne of L e i x l i p Castle. T h e parish a b o u n d s in gentlem e n ' s s e a t s , a n d h a n d s o m e villa r e s i d e n c e s ; t h e principal of w h i c h are L u c a n H o u s e , in a d e m e s n e of 500 acres, in which t h e r e is a m o n u m e n t t o one of the Sarshelds, and a n a n c i e n t o r a t o r y ; S t . E d m o n d s b u r y , Woodville, H e r m i t a g e , &C. I n t h e Irish p e e r a g e this place gives the t i t l e of E a r l to t h t noble family of B i n g h a m . T h e t o w n is situated on a n a r r o w inlet of t h e sea, a n d on t h e Drogheda r a i l w a y , of w h i c h it forms the fourth station from D u b l i n . I n 117-t the M a n o r a n d Castle of M a l a h i d e were g r a n t e d by H e n r y I I . to Richard T a l b o t (tiie ancestor of the E a r l s of .Shrewsbury a n d L o r d s of M a l a h i d e ) , who a c c o m p a n i e d t h a t m o n a r c h into I r e l a n d ; this g r a n t was confirmed by K i n g J o h n , a n d its privileges w e r e extended b y E d w a r d I V . in 1445. by a p p o i n t i n g the L o r d of M a l a h i d e H i g h A d m i r a l of t h e port and seas adjoining, a n d g r a n t i n g c o u r t s leet a n d b a r o n . T h e w h o l e c o n t i n u e d t h r o u g h o u t a n u n i n t e r r u p t e d succession i n the family of T a l b o t t o t h e R e v o l u t i o n , w h e n C r o m w e l l besieged a n d t o o k t h e Castle, and resided t h e r e for some t i m e , w h e n he passed sentence of o u t l a w r y upon T h o m a s , L o r d T a l b o t de M a l a h i d e . and g r a n t e d t h e M a n o r a n d Castle to Myles C o r b e t , o n e of t h e regicides, w h o held it seven y e a r s , u n t i l t h e Restoration, w h e n t h e Talbot family resumed possession, a n d in w h o m it has r e m a i n e d to t h e present day. T h e Castle, commonly called " t h e Court of M a l a h i d e , " is a large square b u i l d i n g , n a n k e d by lofty circular towers, and stands on a h i g h limestone rock, c o m m a n d i n g a line v i e w of t h e t o w n a n d hay. Of t h e original Castle l i t t l e remains b u t the site, a n d that has been greatly e n l a r g e d a n d i m p r o v e d by t h e p r e s e n t L o r d T a l b o t de M a l a h i d e ; the principal front is embattled, a n d the m a m " e n t r a n c e , w h i c h is u n d e r a splendid G o t h i c porch, is defended by t w o circular towers. The grand h a l l is roofed w i t h richly-carved ancient Irish o a k , lighted by three large windows, w i t h a gallery at t h e end. A m o n g the m a n y splendid a p a r t m e n t s t h e Castle c o n t a i n s , t h e most curious is t h a t called t h e u oak chamber,' 1 ceiled and w a i n s c o t t e d w i t h richly-carved o a k , in c o m p a r t m e n t s , containing scriptural devices, and lighted w i t h a p o i n t e d w i n d o w of s t a i n e d glass. I n t h e d r a w i n g - r o o m , a m o n g other valuable paintings, t h e r e is a small altar-piece p a i n t e d b y A l b e r t D u r e r . said to h a v e b e e n originally in the o r a t o r y of Mary Q u e e n of Scots, at Holyrood H o u s e . Th-j d e m e s n e is a d o r n e d w i t h groups of s t a t e l y trees, a n d t h e grounds and g a r d e n s of the Castle are beautirully laid out. I t is open daily to visitors ( S u n d a y s e x c e p t e d ) from 10, A . M . , t o 1, P . M . , and "J to 4, P . M . T h e t o w n contains few houses, b u t m a n y h a n d s o m e cottages, w h i c h a r e chiefly l e t in s u m m e r t o visitors for sea b a t h i n g . T h e only public buildings in t h e parish a r e the C h u r c h , a n e a t edifice of the later E n g l i s h style, a n d a h a n d s o m e R o m a n Catholic C h a p e l , opened J u l y , lb'46. I t h a s a Constabulary P o l i c e a n d a Coast-guard S t a t i o n . I t is said to h a v e b e e n once a place of great traffic, a n d H o l l i n s h e d e n u m e r a t e s it as amongst t h e principal p o s t t o w n s of I r e l a n d . T h e c o t t o n m a n u f a c t u r e was introduced here in t h e last c e n t u r y b y the late M r . M T n t i r e , aided by a g r a n t of £ 2 , 0 0 0 from the late Irish P a r l i a m e n t , but did not succeed. A n Act was also o b t a i n e d i n 1708 by t h e same g e n t l e m a n , at his o w n e x p e n s e , for a canal to e x t e n d to S w o r d s and F i e l d s t o w n , b u t i t l i k e w i s e failed. T h e only trade carried on here n o w is in the i m p o r t of coal, a b o u t 20,000 t o n s a n n u a l l y , a n d in t h e e x p o r t of grain, meal, a n a iiour. Off t h e coast there are profitable beds of oysters, the p r o p e r t y of the L o r d of the M a n o r , leased to Messrs. (-ramaey, M a l a h i d e , from which considerable q u a n t i t i e s are d r a w n , and a r e m u c h esteemed for t h e i r flavour. T h e i n l e t of M a l a h i d e is four miles N . from H o w t h , and e x t e n d s four m i l e s inland. I t is d r y a t low w a t e r , b u t a t high tide vessels drawing 10 a n d 11 feet m a y e n t e r , a n d lie afloat in t h e c r e e k . Across the e s t u a r y , about one a n d a q u a r t e r m i l e s in l e n g t h , the D r o g h e d a railway is c a r r i e d b j a n e m b a n k m e n t , at an elevation of eight feet in o r d i n a r y spring tides : in t h e centre of this e m b a n k m e n t t h e l i n e passes over a w o o d e n viaduct of 11 arches or spans, 5 0 leet w i d e , t h r o u g h w h i c h the t i d e Hows as far a s Lissan H a l l b r i d g e , a d i s t a n c e of t w o a n d a half m i l e s . I t is now safe and c o m m o d i o u s for small class vessels. I t is situated o n the eastern coast, and w a s formerly note.; as a fishing town celebrated for its l i n g , w h i c h w a s here taken a n d cured in g r e a t quantities, and gave emp! ; r.r to 40 superior fishing vessels. I n lb'46 there were IB fishing boats and 27 yawls, employing 1)00 men a n d boys, engaged in t h e fishery, t h e b a n k s of which are a b o u t 20 miles from t h e shore, and abound in ling, hi*1-ssels of m o d e r a t e tonnage and haddock. T h e h a r b o u r since repaired is well suited for the reception of th an e m b a t t l e d tower and say up to fifty tons. T h e only p u b l i c buildings a r e , the R o m a n Catholic Chapel , a n d a MarteUo T o w e r on t h e beach. I t h a s ' a Dispensary and N a t i o n a l Male a spire s u r m o u n t e d by a cros F e m a l e Schools, and is a C o n s t a b u l a r y Police and C o a s t G u a r d Station. A patent lor t w o fairs, on May I 1 S e p t e m b e r 2 9 , exists, b u t n o n e a r e held. T h e h a r b o u r is only tit for small craft, b e i n g difficult of access, i exposed to heavy swells of t h e sea in north-east winds. T h e pier was originally built by the D u k e of Oraioud, the rei?-n of J a m e s I I . W . by W . from Dublin. c o m p r i s i n g an area of *21,868 acres, of which '21 are in the t o w n . P o p u l a t i o n of parish, 4,0'J1 : of town, 348, i n h a b i t i n g 57 houses. T h e t o w n u situated on the road to Blessington, and t h e parish e x t e n d s from Balrothery hill o n t h e river D o d d e r , t o the G r e e n hills at its w e s t e r n e x t r e m i t y . T h e southern portion forms the range called t h e u T a l l a g h t H i l l s , " and c o m m a n d s magnificent views of t h e bay a n d vale of D u b l i n . Tradition stares t h a t a t t h i s place, ( t h e n a m e of w h i c h signifies ' ' a place of burial,"') t h e whole race of P a r t h o l o n . who formed a s e t t l e m e n t in I r e l a n d , A . M . 1956, and w e r e destroyed by the plague, were interred. I n t h e eighth century an a b b e y was founded h e r e , of which St. Maelrune was a b b o t P r i o r to 1324, A l e x a n d e r D e Bickner, archbishop of D u b l i n , b u i i t a castle h e r e , w h i c h was subsequently enlarged, a n d , w i t h extensive* g a r d e n s , and 200 acres of d e m e s n e land, formed the palace or country residence of all his successors down t o 1803, when D r . Fowler was t h e last archbishop w h o resided h e r e . I n 1<>*2.5 it was t a k e n d o w n a n d disposed of under an Act oi P a r l i a m e n t , a n d o u t of t h e m a t e r i a l s , Tallaght H o u s e (now S t . Mary's C o n v e n t ) was erected. The church. a l i t t l e above t h e t o w n , dedicated to St. M a e l r u n e , is a m o d e r n building in t h e pointed style. At Firhouse t h e r e is a c o n v e n t of Diseaiced Carmelites, and at Mount A n n e a smail m o n a s t e r y of the same order. in b o t h of which free schools are held. I n t h e t o w n there is a Dispensary, a n d t h e r e a r e National Schools. A p a t e n t for fairs e x i s t s , b u t n o n e are held. I t is a Constabulary Police station, a n d P e t t y Sessions are held every alternate Monday. T h e r e are several paper a n d flour mills in t h e parish, as also a woollen mill. Of the r e m a i n s of antiquity t h e r e a r e n u m e r o u s vestiges. I n the garden of T a l l a g h t H o u s e is a large square tower. f o r m e r l y part of t h e C a t t l e . T i m o n , or Tiraothan C a s t l e , consists of a square tower a n d k e e p . A t Aughiarrei. t h e r e a r e remains of a castle : a n d at the G r e e n H i l l s is a rath a n d fort.
