Introduction
We’ve made it ... to the beginning of 2009 that is! The vast majority of
companies listed in our January 2008 Guide have also survived. Although
some will struggle most will prosper and will reach the end of 2009
stronger than they are today.
20% of all industrial accommodation within the OX16 postcode is now vacant,
the highest amount of square footage ever “surplus to requirement” in
Banbury’s history.
There is over one million square feet of empty accommodation, much of which
has no useful future as manufacturing requirements move on, and the premises
that were suitable for the 1930’s, 1940’s, and in some cases even the 1970’s are
suddenly outdated.
This should not reflect badly upon Banbury which has seen an incredible
amount of growth during the last two decades. Many medium and small size
companies are prospering even in these difficult times. These companies are
working hard to retain existing markets while at the same time finding new
opportunities.

Banbury was grateful to see the expansion of General Foods (Kraft Foods), British Alcan (Sapa), and latterly
the development of the Hella factory in the mid-1980’s. Kraft Foods are marketing over a quarter of a million
square feet of accommodation, while the factories at Hella and Sapa are now closed. Tramway Road has
taken on the role of a giant car park for those who travel to London and Birmingham prior to long term redevelopment, and the Haslemere Industrial units whilst looking perfectly acceptable remain nearly 50%
vacant.
