COMPANY PROFILE
BRASMERC, a Brazilian trading and manufacturing company, was established to
cover the international demand for Brazilian construction materials, especially hardwood
prefabricated houses.
Over the years, BRASMERC has supplied and exported prefabricated homes to
Europe, North America, the Caribbean, the Far East and to the countries that today make
up the Mercosul (South American Common Market). The company has over 50 standard
models to choose from. These models can be easily modified to satisfy a customer’s special
needs.
Also available is a full engineering and planning department that can custom
execute any floor plan proposed by the client, adapting their layout to be fabricated and
supplies with hardwood components.
In addition to above, BRASMERC can supply a full range of ceramic and roof tile, plumbing
fixtures, brass locks and hardware, paints, varnishes, plywood, composite OSB boards,
furniture and prefabricated kitchen cabinets together with electric appliances.
Due to the close connection between BRASMERC and large saw mills, located in
Amazon basin, the company has been able to offer at advantageous prices hardwood
products used in the building trade, such as flooring, ceiling, decking, beams and columns
cut to length. This hardwood timber is exported under the Brazilian government’s
jurisdiction, which ascertains that these resources are harvested on a renewable basis. All
exports are inspected by IBAMA (the Brazilian agency in charge of control) that allow for
responsible harvesting of this precious commodity.
The trees that comprise BRASMERC exports are of the following specific kinds of
wood: MAÇARANDUBA, IPE, CUMARU, JATOBA, ANGELIM and GRAPIA.
The pre-engineered house kits are composed primarily of MAÇARANDUBA and ANGELIM.
BRASMERC has an established network of representatives. These representatives
are fully familiar with all aspects of constructions in their respective countries. In addition,
they know all of the requirements necessary, which are needed to fulfill import
requirements. These requirements are then passed on to BRASMERC for the booking of
freight containers and the negotiation of best cargo rates for their destinations.
Through BRASMERC vast experience in dealing domestically with suppliers and
Shipping companies, they assure their representatives and clients of competitive prices on
all products supplied as well as timely delivery.
Due to its export success, BRASMERC is in the process of constructing a 10,000
square meter warehouse and factory complex in the city of Bom Jesus dos Perdões. This
will enable the company to store and fabricate special components on site, allowing for
faster deliveries and more efficient transport thus making its products even more price
attractive.
BRASMERC’s dedicated staff assures the customers of complete adherents to all
facets of their business, from estimating, product engineering, the ordering of lumber,
fabricating of all kit components, storing, loading and shipping. Also available is technical
stall i.e. erectors and carpenters, who assemble these hardwood houses ate their final
destination.

THE WOOD
For many centuries, man has been using wood as one of the principal materials
for building. The reason for that, between other ones, is that wood has an amount
important properties and characteristics as: ease of handling and processing, high
mechanical strength in relation to its dead weight, good thermal and electrical
insulation, and good performance in aggressive environments.
Our raw material comes from the natural forests of Amazon, the world’s largest
region in production of all types of woods. The extraction of the wood is in a sustained
way. Technically, supported production means the appropriate approach to an
ecosystem for a nonstop production in a rational way by selecting the cut of the adult
trees, without destroying fauna and flora, protecting the forest.
We use hard and heavy wood. Most of those species are known as:
maçaranduba, ipe, curumaru, jatoba, angelim and grapia. Most of the components used
in our houses are made of the heartwood of the species as maçaranduba and angelim.

DURABILITY AND THERMAL INSULATION
Those woods present as principal characteristics: high natural durability in
contact with the soil and high resistance against the attack of rotting funguses and
xylophagous insets. They are recommended for external applications such as: bridges,
sleepers, civil construction as beams, columns rafters, floors, walls, stairs and naval
construction for vessels and piers, anchorages.
Regarding to thermal conductibility, woods in general has its coefficient of heat
conductibility of 0.03Kcal/m.h°C, that is about 1,300 times smaller than steel, 10 times
smaller than cement and 40 times smaller than bricks. The velocity that wood absolves
heat or cold from the environment is much smaller than other materials. This is why it
makes the wood an excellent natural thermal insulation.
SAVINGS
We supply prefabricated disassembled wooden kit houses in massive wood.
Besides the wood, client receives: a plan with suggestion for approval the project at
City Hall, a suggestion for building the base (foundation), a plan for assembling the
house with all the technical details and a packing list of complimentary materials to
finish the house.
With all those information, client and his engineer/architect can chose all the
finishing materials, such as: ceramic floor, tiles, hydraulic and electric material,
hardware for doors and windows. This way client has a substantial reduction at the final
price of the house.
Kit has its dead weight considered light related to conventional constructions
(permanent dead load of 260Kg/m2), considering the weight of the kit plus the weight
of the roof with ceramic tiles). The walls behave as self-supporting and load bearing
elements. It means they not only support themselves, but also support the roof. In this
system we don’t have pillars (except for the porch) discharging concentrated loads to
determined points of the structure, points which should have reinforced bases to
transmit the structure weight to the soil. That is why we may use foundations simpler
that the conventional ones used for masonry houses. To execute the foundation, you
should obey the measurements between axis of the wall and porches, as the level. You
may consult your technician in charge of the project about the characteristics of your
job site, type of soil and so.

ORDERING THE KIT
There are three possible options available to our clients in order for them to
purchase our hardwood houses:
 Standard Kit – Choose from the models provided in our catalogue or on our
website: www.brasmerc.com.br.
 Modified Kit – We will adapt the standard kit to client’s preferences.
 Special Kit – Client can send us his project plan and we will adapt it to the
Brasmerc construction system.
In all cases, our technicians will adhere to the customers’ preferences.
Upon receipt of a purchase order, Brasmerc will send a set of plans to the
client, who will then be able to present the technical information to local authorities to
obtain permission for construction and also enable them to prepare the house
foundation.
RECEIVEING THE KIT
Client may prepare a plan and clean local, near to the foundation, to receive all
the pieces of the kit. All the components for finishing can’t receive any kind of humidity
and direct sunstroke. You should have a special care with doors, windows, floor and
some special profiles for finishing (Half fascia board, half round trim, baseboard, etc).
We can not substitute damage material if it is not well storage.
HARDWOOD KIT COMPONENTS
1- SIDING (P)
Exterior and interior wall panels are cut from massaranduba (mahogany family)
logs, which have the following characteristics.
The walls are 4.5 centimeters (1 ¾ inches) thick and have a height of 14.2
centimeters (5 1/2 inches). These members vary in length and can be up to 3.5 meters
(14’ 9” long). Where longer pieces are required it is standard practice to insert a
grooved column into which the boards slide and are mounted in order to achieve
greater lateral resistance.

The wall panels are tongue and groove design. The top indentation of the wall
panels has an anti-capillary groove to prevent wind-driven water from finding its way
through the panel overlaps.
2- WALL LINER
BRASMERC has also developed a wooden wall liner for interior walls in houses
that will be erected in cold climates. This liner is produced of wall pannel hardwood with
boards of the following dimensions:. 2.0 centimeters thick and have a height of 14.2
centimeters (5 1/2 inches).
This allows the contractor to use either rock wool or
fiberglass insulation between the outer and inner walls. The attachment of these boards
is done as per drawings and instructions supplied by BRASMERC.

3- POSTS VERTICAL COLUMNS (M)
These are produced from Angelim Pedra hardwood and consist of three
members bolted and screwed into a solid column in dimensions of either 11x11
centimeters (43/8”x43/8”) or 13x13 centimeters (51/8“x51/8”) for kits that need further
strengthening due to heavy wind conditions.
These columns are properly slotted to allow the wallboards to slide into these
members for lateral and longitudinal support. The depth of the column slots is 4.6cm x
2,5 cm (13/4”x 1”).

4- END RAFTER (F)
This rafter is designed to be placed on top of the last (highest) wallboard and
extends over the regular column spacing. By assembling it, and splicing and nailing it at
a 45% angle it will assume the function of a continuous beam on which the roof rafters
are placed and connected. See schematic pictures

5- TRIMS (RS)
Over all framed openings i.e., windows, doors, and passageways.
As the wallboards are harvested and machined while still green (that is prior to
drying) the wood’s width will shrink.
As the buildings are assembled prior to the full shrinkage of the wallboards, a
space of around 10 centimeters (3 to 4 inches) will be left open above all framed
openings. These spaces are covered by plain wall borders on both sides of the
wallboards thus allowing the upper portion of the wallboards free movement without
being supported or hindered by the structure of the framed openings.
On the kits that are supplied with solid columns to which the belt course is
through bolted, additional sideboards are supplied to allow the space between the
shrinking
wall boards and the belt course to be properly enclosed.

7- BEAM (V)
This is a major supporting member of the roof structure, also called purlin.
Its cross section is sized according to the span to be covered between seats.
Generally such a beam is fitted into the main rafters, porch sandwich fasteners or
between two wall panels, creating a seating condition for another beam: in this case we
referred to such a beam as "auxiliary beam".
The system uses four types of beams:

8- BUILD-UP COLUMNS (S)
These columns are assembled from three Boards usually 11x11 or 13x13
centimeters or in special cases even larger. These three piece columns are glued and
bolted together with through bolts and are used as primary wall supporting columns.
They are also designed to be utilized as posts for porches and roof extensions. In
addition they can also carry additional loads, for instance, as gravity water tanks with
up to a ton capacity.

9- DOOR AND WINDOW FRAMES (B)
These frames are also build up sections, consisting of three stringers which are
glued and bolted together to create the necessary window openings as well as interior
framed openings. The design is based on the principal that the wallboards will slide into
the opening slots thus making a complete wall system. Note: all wallboards are
precut at the factory to make sure that they are supplied in proper lengths and quantity

11- COMMON RAFTERS (CA)
Common rafters are integrating parts of the roof structure, of 4.5 x 7.3 cm net
cross section. They are fitted over the purlins and end rafters, providing the support for
the battens.
12- BATTENS (R)
These are wood strips with a cross section of 2.5 x 5 cm, and are fitted onto
the common rafters. The spacing between battens should be determined by the roof
tile gauge (distance between roof tile supporting seats) which may vary from 33 to 44
cm, depending on the type and manufacturing of the roof tile.

These are made up of members 4.5 cm thick by 15cm wide and are built to
give the porch a proper balustrade. Two design options are available: close spaced
vertical struts or a wide parallel board located mid height of the rail. We recommend
the smaller open space with vertical struts in the event small children will be occupying
the premises.
14- HALF FASCIA BOARD (1/2 F)
Its thickness is the same as the wall siding board and its height is the same as
the regular end rafter with a 2.00 x 15.00 cm cross section. It is used as the last wall
panel piece, whose full height does not make up a whole number of siding boards. We
will use “double half fascia board” as requested, with a 2.00 x 21.00 cm

ELECTRICAL INSTALATION
It is recommended that a local electrical contractor be engaged as this man or
company will be able to ascertain that all local design and installation codes are
followed.
HIDRAULIC INSTALATION
The same applies as above, as a qualified plumber will have to be engaged to
fulfill local code requirements.
PROTECTION
As a rule, hardwood is not subject to termite or other rodent attacks. However,
lighter woods may be subject to parasite attacks. If any of these woods are used they
should be protected or regular tenting of the building should take place should evidence
of parasite droppings be found.

PAINTING/VARNISHING/WATERPROOFING (STAINS)
The hardwood, as such, does not have to be coated or painted but if the
customer wishes to enhance the appearance of his house the building’s exterior can
easily be painted with oil paints or varnishes. It is up to the customer to decide if he
wishes to paint or varnish his property.
Over the years, should the wood not be painted, it will acquire a silver sheen
that can be easily removed by lightly sanding the surfaces.
When applying paints, the paint manufacturer’s suggestions and
recommendations should be followed including application of base paints.
