Second Mailing 2015 - Model United Nations The International
Tuesday, 26th May, 2015 Dear MUN Director, On behalf of my fellow MUNISH Board of Directors (BOD), I am pleased to present you with the Second Mailing for MUNISH 2015. We are delighted with the response we received to Form I and the First Mailing and we are therefore looking forward to hosting a vibrant and diverse conference. Model United Nations is a unique opportunity for students to broaden their horizons, develop greater understanding of the world around them and to better understand how they, as global citizens, can contribute to it. We, the BOD, hope that MUNISH 2015 will also allow its diverse range of participants to question global issues such as those connected to our MUNISH 2015 theme: ‘Good Governance and Cooperation’. This theme allows every participant at the conference to discuss important issues that are essential to maintaining political, economic and social stability. 'Good Governance' and 'Cooperation' are two of the United Nation’s main goals. However, today’s reality is that there is significant inequality throughout the world. It is through cooperation and good governance that these challenges might be addressed. The Second Mailing contains organizational information and a more detailed outline of the MUNISH conference. In addition to this Form II has now been released; the form in which individual information about delegates can be filled in. We have allocated schools to member state delegations and non-member delegations according to, as much as possible, the preferences given on the registration forms. Please follow the instructions above the list of delegation assignments carefully before assigning your delegates to their committees. This mailing also contains the Student Officer Team announcement and the issues on the agenda. Furthermore, this mailing also provides information concerning the charities that MUNISH will be supporting this year: The Stahili Foundation and the Red Cross (Nepal Earthquake Aid). Resources for MUNISH participants, including the MUN Chairing Guide and the How to Help MUN Delegates Become Prepared Booklet can be found on the MUNISH website under the ‘Download’ tab. Research reports, written by our Student Officer team, will be placed on the MUNISH website no later than five weeks prior to the conference. We would like to strongly encourage your delegates to make use of these resources as well-prepared delegates enhance the quality of debate and the MUNISH conference as a whole. The Third Mailing, containing final details about MUNISH 2015, will be sent out in early September. All information contained in the Second Mailing, and additional information about the conference can be found at www.munish.nl. In addition to this, information concerning hotels, travel and tourist attractions can be found on our website under ‘The Hague’ tab. In case of further questions regarding country delegations or any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected]. These will be held in the school facility on Friday October 30th and will be led by individuals with MUN experience. Students may signup for all workshops during registration on the Friday. Please note that we will be offering two workshop sessions. Please find the agenda at http://www.munish.nl/pages/agenda. The workshop leaders will be announced in the conference booklet. We will therefore offer the following workshops listed below. The New Delegates Workshop is a great opportunity for new participants to develop helpful debating techniques and skills, as well as the perfect environment to develop and share skills with others. Delegates will be able to apply these skills during this year’s conference as well as in the future. The Student Officer Workshop aims to develop individuals so they are prepared to direct the debates as chairs. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for participants to ask questions, learn new skills and techniques and share experience. Participants with previous student officer experience are also welcome to join this workshop. The Public Speaking Workshop is for all participants of the conference. This workshop is especially beneficial to individuals with little or no MUN experience, as public speaking plays a large role in debates. In this workshop, participants will learn a variety of skills, which will be helpful during debating sessions. Transport For finding your way around public transport in the Netherlands, we highly recommend the following website, http://9292.nl/en#. This service is also offered as a mobile application. The site is in English and will inform you about all the travel information, including maps for the walking routes and the total cost of the trip in case you choose not to buy the subsidised 4-day travel card offered on the next paragraph below. Also please find directions to and from the conference from Schiphol Airport and The Hague Central Train Station at http://www.munish.nl/pages/directions. Subsidised 4-day Travel Card Delegates arriving from countries outside The Netherlands may have the option to purchase a travel card from us providing access to all public transport systems in The Hague. We strongly advise this purchase as the Dutch Transport System uses a system that is both expensive and impractical for short visits. This year, MUNISH will again be offering the “Congreskaarten” that holders can use to take any public transport around The Hague (unlimited) for four days. These travel cards are a great success every year! The card will allow holders to take the trams or buses to and from school and to any other locations they may wish to see in The Hague. These will be priced at €15.50 per person for four days and will be available to anyone who takes part in 20 MUNISH Secretariat • Wijndaelerduin 1 2554 BX The Hague The Netherlands • •Tel. +31(0)70 328 1450 Fax. +31(0)70 328 2049 • e-mail: [email protected] • • website: www.munish.nl • the conference. This means that by using the travel card, cardholders could save up to €30 in travelling costs per person. However, if you choose not to purchase one of these tickets you have two other alternatives. You could buy a ticket each time you travel which costs €3 and is only valid for 60 minutes so even if students were to only do 2 trips a day (to and from the conference) this would cost €6 each day. There is also a day card which costs €5 per day for unlimited travel. Therefore the travel card that we offer is by far the cheapest alternative. Purchasing these cards, which we have specially negotiated with the travel company HTM are also significantly cheaper to use when compared with the conventional OV-chip cards. To purchase these cards please email [email protected] by the 25th of September 2015 stating how many of these travel cards you would like to order. Conference Fees & Deadlines The deadline for payment of fees is the 25th of September 2015. Registration Fee per school (for Domestic and International Schools) € 60 Participation Fee per Person (Delegate and MUN Director) € 65 Participation Fee per Person (Student Officer) € 70 Please address all your invoice questions to our Business Manager at: [email protected] Deadline for payment of fees 25th of September 2015 Cancellations If for unforeseen circumstances a delegate or whole delegation is suddenly unable to attend MUNISH 2015, a cancellation must be e-mailed to the Secretariat ([email protected]) by Friday 11th September 2015. As a conference, which celebrates the capabilities, motivation, and creativity of youth, we feel that we should support the young men and women who do not have the wonderful opportunities we do. Stahili Foundation is a non-profit organization that rescues and supports child victims of forced labour, exploitation, abuse and neglect in rural Kenya. Stahili takes its name from the Swahili word for ‘deserve’. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to achieve their potential through education, one of the most effective tools to break the cycle of poverty and fight the conditions that fuel exploitation. The Stahili Foundation Website: http://www.stahilifoundation.org MUNISH 2015 will also be supporting the Rode Kruis (Dutch Red Cross) Nepal Earthquake Aid, providing humanitarian support to people affected by the devastating earthquakes that have hit Nepal early this year. The earthquakes have brought immense grief and destruction, leaving entire villages flattened and millions homeless. As the death toll and number of casualties continue to rise, the Dutch Red Cross, a non-profit organisation with a mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering, is providing food supplies, medical care and emergency shelters, in an international effort to aid the victims of this disaster. Therefore, profit from merchandise sold at MUNISH will be donated to The Stahili Foundation and the Red Cross. We also hope that participants will be eager to donate to support the vital and noble work these charities do. In every committee charity boxes will be passed around where delegates are welcome to contribute to the total donations. In addition, MUNISH 2015 will be organizing a raffle to raise money for the charities above. Participants will have the opportunity to buy raffle tickets during the conference. The winner of the prize (to be determined shortly) will be announced during the closing ceremony. More about the raffle will be in the Third Mailing in September. 22 MUNISH Secretariat • Wijndaelerduin 1 2554 BX The Hague The Netherlands • •Tel. +31(0)70 328 1450 Fax. +31(0)70 328 2049 • e-mail: [email protected] • • website: www.munish.nl • Accommodation (Hotels) This year MUNISH is negotiating with local hotels to offer you the best deals and nicest accommodations. On our MUNISH website we have provided information with regards to hotel prices and locations around The Hague. (http://www.munish.nl/pages/hotels.php) Several hotels have offered discounted rates for MUNISH participants. The interactive map allows you to see what hotel is the best for your delegation. Hotel price comparisons can be found below the interactive map of The Hague. If you will be staying in a hotel, please be aware that there will be a large IB Conference (http://www.ibo.org/en/aem-conference/) taking place in The Hague at the same time as MUNISH. Hotels should therefore be booked very soon; especially with regards schools coming from abroad to avoid disappointment. Community Housing The MUNISH Secretariat will make every effort to house all delegates visiting from schools outside The Hague. Priority will be given to those schools travelling the furthest. More information concerning housing will be enclosed in the Third Mailing. Furthermore, please note that housing is only provided to students, and not to MUN-Directors. Also housing is not on campus, but instead with our students who live in The Hague. Please address all your community housing questions to our Community Housing Coordinator, Ms. Karin O’Flynn, who can be contacted at: [email protected] MUN-Director Tour MUNISH will be offering a MUN-Director tour on Saturday, 31st October 2015 in the morning. This tour is intended to provide a medium for getting acquainted with each other and with the theme of this year’s conference: Good governance and Cooperation. We are in the process of organising the venue, which will be communicated to the MUN-Directors in The Third Mailing. 23 MUNISH Secretariat • Wijndaelerduin 1 2554 BX The Hague The Netherlands • •Tel. +31(0)70 328 1450 Fax. +31(0)70 328 2049 • e-mail: [email protected] • • website: www.munish.nl • Touring The Hague & Places to Visit in The Netherlands Enjoy the many cultural and social activities The Netherlands has to offer during your stay.
