Similar to last year, Mother Nature threw a little snow our way, but with the theme being the Winter Olympics in Sochi, nothing could stop the fun that this spiel generates. Excellent Russian themed fare was enjoyed on Friday night (what a presentation), home hosting and a superb Saturday night meal topped off the event. Our Friday night costume party was hotly contested by many teams with the “Greeks” coming out on top. Congratulations for all of the creativity that was shown by the teams. At publication time the funds are still being tallied for the raffle and auction of which the proceeds will be donated to the Spinal Cord Injury of Canada foundation. The carnivores were out in full force with over 300 Members joining us for the five evenings that focused on our Steakhouse inspired menu. The phones were ringing to get the last few tables available each night and a full dining room each evening was wonderful to see. Those in attendance provided positive feedback on food, service and exclusive wine offerings available both by the glass and bottle, creating a consistent ‘buzz’ amongst Members. We would like to thank all of those that joined us and we look forward to our next culinary theme week in March when we visit Italy! Stay tuned for details. SOCHI ARRIVES AT ST. Julio Bowl has become a marquee event here at St. George’s and with over 110 Members signed up the event filled up weeks prior to kick off, this is a hot ticket! Our very own Julio was out in full force, dressed in football gear and getting the energy up for game time. Our Mill St. Brewery sponsored tail gate had Members enjoying bottles of Organic Lager and Tankhouse Ale while snacking on hot sausages and hot dogs off the grill. The never ending buffet inside kept our kitchen team working hard to ensure everyone got plenty to eat each time they topped up their plate! The half time suckling pig carved by Chef Chris was a highlight and although the game was a bit one-sided, the food selection was not. I COMMUNITY NEWS Community Outreach The following is a submission from Andrea Homes of the Yorktown Shelter for Women. Andrea reached out to request the opportunity to thank the St. George’s community for their ongoing support for the shelter and the services they offer. ocated in North West Toronto is Yorktown Shelter for Women, a haven for women and children who have left behind lives fraught with violence and abuse to begin the challenging journey of transitioning into new lives. Only 10 minutes from the Shelters doors is St. George's Golf and Country Club, home not only to an outstanding golf course but also to an oasis of philanthropy – the caring members that give back to the local community. In May of 2013, Yorktown Shelter for Women (YSW) had the good fortune of finding itself on the radar of the generous members of St. George's Golf and Country Club. It is my pleasure and my privilege to deliver a message of heartfelt 'thanks' on behalf of YSW's clients; social and community workers and staff; Board of Directors and volunteers. We can not thank you enough for your thoughtfulness and kindness. Since May of last year, Yorktown Shelter for Women has been the beneficiary of several philanthropic initiatives that members of St. George's Golf and Country Club have undertaken. Many of you may have been involved in some, or all, of the following initiatives (listed in chronological order): • Ladies' Captain's Choice Golf Tournament Fundraiser; proceeds have helped mothers and their children move from the Yorktown Shelter for women into their new homes. In particular, funds were used to purchase new beds for the families. To date, 10 families have been settled into their new homes. • St. George's Golf and Country Club donated furniture (bookcase, dining chairs, side tables) and dishes that were used to furnish the homes for the 10 YSW families. • Winter coat drive; St. George's curling members collected 165 winter coats that were donated to several agencies, 25 were donated to Yorktown Shelter for Women. • Warm clothing drive; St. George's curling members collected hats, mitts, and scarves which were distributed at the Yorktown Shelter for Women. The warm clothing could not have come at a better time, when, beginning just before the holidays, our city endured several weeks of sustained substantially sub-zero temperatures • Undergarment clothing drive; a friendly competition was initiated by St. George's curling members who challenged the curling members of the Weston Golf and Country Club in an undergarment clothing drive. A large quantity of lovely items were collected. An event at the Shelter has been planned for mid-February where the garments will be distributed to the clients. L • Lady Curlers X-mas Luncheon Raffle; ever thoughtful and generous, the ladies took the opportunity to raise some funds for Yorktown Shelter for Women. • Members of St. George's have gone on to connect Yorktown Shelter for Women and it's sister agency, Yorktown Child and Family Centre, to other local organizations helping to build Yorktown's network of philanthropists. We are truly grateful to everyone at St. George's Golf and Country Club who contributed to the success of the above initiatives. Please know that your investment in the clients of Yorktown Shelter for Women and Yorktown Child and Family Centre is very much appreciate. Your altruism is helping us to bring positive change to lives of many deserving children, youth, women and families in north west Toronto. We would like to offer a very special 'thank you' to Paul and Judy Huyer, Tracy Martin, Debbie Hawkey, Keith and Angela Bartlett, Barb Mosakos, Graeme McCarrel, and MaryKay MacPherson for being instrumental in the success of the above initiatives. Yorktown has been bringing programs and services to at-risk and marginalized communities in north west Toronto for over 20 years. If you would like more information on the work that we do or would like to see for yourself how you have contributed back to the local community, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I would be very happy to answer your questions and set up a tour of our facilities.
