EventhoughallPowderPuffQueencandidateswere verybeautiful,KyleJarrellsakaVeraFabunique,won thetitleasLewisCountyPowderPuffQueenforrais‐ ingthemostmoney.Congratulationsforgoingout thereandstruttingyourstuff. 4 5 HomecomingWeekComingtoanEnd… byMorganEnix LCHS's"Club14"themeddancebroughtinhundredsofstudents!Theevent tookplaceinthegymforthe irsttimeinyears!Studentshadplentyofroom toboogiedownandsocialize.Thedance,extendedtofourhours,remained wellattendeduntil12:00. Last,IwouldliketothanktheLCHSstudentbodyforbestowingmewiththe honorofHomecomingQueen2014,andSeniorClayEshamwiththehonorof HomecomingKing!Wecouldnotbemorethankfulforourpeers'support. 6 7 AFTERtheICEAGE byDukeClinton OurLionsofthegridironenteredthecrispandcolorfuldaysofOctoberwithouttheservicesof ieldgeneralIsaac“Ice Man”Weddington.HewasoneofthetopquarterbacksinnortheasternKen‐ tuckyandtheleaderofapowerfuloffensethatwasmakingitsmarkamong areateams.CoachHughesandhisstaffhadthedif iculttaskofmidseasonad‐ justmentandanewstrategy.ThepositionofQBwaseventuallyputonthe shouldersofJordan“Scoobie”Davis,atalentedathletewithadifferentsetof skills.Thediewascastandtheseasonwentforward. TheLionstravelledtoMaysvilleforthe irstbattleoftheOctobercampaign. TommyParkssharedQBdutieswithDavisinahardfoughtgamethatdepend‐ edonathunderinggroundattack.The“BruiseBrothers”carriedtheloadwith TylerMustardprovidingthespeed.Mason“Chumley”Thurmanledinrushingwith113yards.Thegoallinewas crossedbybothDaltonStammandMustard.ThedefenseheldthehighscoringRoyalstojust19points.Leadingtack‐ lerswereAustinEvans,AndrewSwingler,AustinEgbert,andKirklandEverman.Whenthe inalhornsounded,thetally wasaclose19‐14.Itwasavalianteffortwithadisappointingend. Stillontheroad,theLionsboardedthebusandheadedtoEast Carter’sHomecomingwithaforecastofprobablerain.Probable precipitationbecameadelugefortheentiregame.TheRaider Homecomingwasnotonlydampenedbytheweather,butalsoby theLion’sresoundingvictoryina36‐7romp.All36pointswere scoredinthe irsthalfwhenthe ieldwasabit irmer.Mustard had4touchdownswhilegaining152yardsonjust8carries.Dev‐ onDuncanscoredanotherTDonapassfromDavisand2point conversionswererunbyMustard,Parks,andStamm. YetanothertriptookourroadwearyfootballerstoIvan McGlone ieldtofacetheRedDevils.AweekafteraconvincingwinoverpreviouslyundefeatedMason,Russellshowed nosignsoflettingup.Thetradition‐richDevilsdealtourLionsa36‐6defeat.TheoffensewasmostlyDaviswhothrew for55yardsandgained72ontheground.LeadingdefenderswereStamm,Mustard,Everman,andZaneFrye‐Scott. TheseriesofawaygameswouldleaveourLionswitharecordof4winsagainst4losses.Ournextcontestwouldbea trueHomecomingagainstagoodWestCartersquad. RollPride! 8 byDukeClinton HOMEATLAST,HOMEATLAST! THANKGODALMIGHTY!WE’REHOMEATLAST! Afterthreeweeksontheroad,ourLewisCountyLionsreturnedforatrueHomecoming.Notonlywasthegameim‐ portantforthisannualriteofFall,butitwasalsotodeterminethe inalspotinourdistrictforabirthintheplayoffs. ThewinnerwouldplayinNovember,buttheloserwouldendtheseasononHalloweennight. Following the evening’s festivities, the rather large crowd settled in for an exciting game that was well worth the priceofadmission.WestCarterkickedoffandforceda3andoutonthe irstseries.CometQB,BradenBrown,started thescoringwitha29yardtouchdownrun.Theextrapointattemptwasnogood. The Bruise Brothers and speedster Tyler Mustard came back with a strong and sustainedgroundgame.Unfortunately,thedrivediedonly6yardsfrompaydirt. The irstquarterwouldendwiththescore6‐0. Thesecondperiodbeganwithanotherdrivethatstayedontheground.Again, Dalton Stamm and Mason Thurman punished the Comet defense, while Mustard ranaroundthem.Mustardcappedoffthedrivewitha12yardrun.Anattemptto tack on 2 more points was unsuccessful. The scorewasbrie lyknottedat6‐6.Westresponded quickly with a TD pass from Brown to Mosley. The Lions blocked the kick attempt to leave the tallyat12‐6. AthwarteddrivefortheLionswasfollowedbywhatwaslikelythebestdefensive playoftheyear.AvicioussackbyStammdislodgedtheballthatwasscoopedupby AustinEgbertandcarriedintotiethescoreat12‐12with2:53leftinthehalf.West camerightbackwitha54yardTDrunbyMitchellwithMosleyadding2.Afterthree ballexchanges,MitchellrananotherTDwith11.6secondsleft.Mosleyaddedakickto makethehalftimescore27‐12. ThesecondhalfopenedwithMichaelLumpkinsrecoveringanonsidekick.Thefollowingdrivewasdominatedby therunningofMustardanda25yardpassfromJordanDavistoMustardwhichcameafteraMustardTDrunwascalled back.ATDrunbyDaviswasalsocalledbackbutwasfollowedbyaTDpassfromDavistoMustard.A2pointextra pointattemptwasagainnogood.ThatcuttheCometsleadto27‐18. Mustard’sheroicscontinuedasheinterceptedaBrownpassontheLewis43andreturnedittotheWestCarter16. Fourplayslater,StammpoweredinfortheTD.The2pointattemptfailedoncemore.Thethirdquarterendedwitha scoreof27‐24. Several minutes into the fourth quarter, Lewis was on a steady drive behind therunningofStammandKirklandEvermanwhohadreplacedtheinjuredThur‐ man.Mustardonceagaincamethroughwitha46yardTDrun.The2pointat‐ temptafterwarddidnotsucceed.TheLionshadtheir irstleadofthegameat30‐ 27withlessthan8minutestoplay. West Carter began the next series at their own 46. Despite a huge sack by Eg‐ bert during the drive, with less than 4 minutes left West had the ball on the 4 yardlineanditwas4thdown.Brownpro‐ ceeded to loft a sideline pass to his brother Payton in the end zone for the go aheadtouchdown.AnotherkickbyMosleyputthescoreat34‐30. In what would be the inal drive of the game, the thunder of Stamm and the lightningofMustardwouldtaketheLionstothe7yardlineanditwas4thand5. Mustardranaroundtheleftendbutwasforcedoutofboundsonthe6yardline.TheCometstookakneetwicetoend thegame. It was a hard hitting battle that put all who braved the cold on an emotional roller coaster. Neither team wouldgiveup.Bothsideskeptrespondingtothechallengesoftheother.Itwasaclassicgamewithasadending,butit willberemembered,asitshouldbe. 9 StateBound TheLCMarchingBandofPrideis enjoyingaverysuccessfulseason. Theyreallykickeditoffatthestart, andcontinuedontheirtraditionof success.Justasthebandthought theyweren'tgoingtomakeit,they weresupersurprisedwhenthey wereannouncedasasemi‐ inalist. Thiscomestoshowthatwithplenty ofhope,teamwork,anddesire, greatthingswillhappen! TheMarchingBandstartedoffthe seasonatBourbon.Theythenwent ontoMason,MSU,Shelbyville,But‐ lerTraditional(sweepingtheir Class),MadisonCentral,Bourbon, andisnowheadedtoDanville,for theStateSemi‐Finalsforthe5th yearinrow! LastSaturday,theBandplaced6th atBourbonCountyintheRegion FinalsandscoredPro icientwitha 77.2,2.8pointsawayfromaDistin‐ guished. WithouramazingColorGuard,we haveevenmoreofagreatreputa‐ tion.Theyhaveplace irstinallof thecompetitions,exceptone,which wasatMSU. Ofcourse,theBandwouldn'thave madeitwithouttheguidanceofthe amazingsectionleaders:CayleyPot‐ ter,HeavenJones,BethThomas,and RachelBentley.And,thetalented FieldCommander,TyranEllis.Not tomention,BandDirectorMatt VoilesandGuardDirectorRenee McCane. StateSemi‐Finalsisabigdealfor ourMarchingBand.Thereisno doubtthattheycontinuemakingour highschoolasproudascanbe.We canonlywishthebestinDanville,at theStateSemi‐Finalstomorrow. 10 byKamiBentley CheeringontheLions Betweenfundraisingandhoursofpractice,theLCHScheerleadershavetheirschedulesjampacked! Withthe irstperformanceonlyfourweeksaway,thecheerleaderslookforwardtoagreatcompetitionseason.Currently,thereisavarietyofLCapparelbeingsoldbythecheerleaders.Ifinterestedin addingtoyourLCwardrobe,contactanyvarsitycheerleaderforinfo. WeCrossedtheCountry byJoshuaHeininger TheLCHSCrossCountryteamwrappeduptheirregularseasonwithtwogreatmeets.Both,heldatMasonCounty, provedthateventhoughtheseasoniscomingtoanendtherunnersaren'treadytoquit.SeniorJoshuaHeininger(Me) andJuniorMasonMassiearebothlookingaheadtothisSaturday’sRegionalmeet,alsoheldatMason.IfMassieandI cancrossthe inishlinewithatimearound18:30,wewillbothhaveaspotinnextweek'sStateChampionshipmeetat theLexingtonHorsePark. Basedonourlastcouplemeetstheteamisinagoodpositionheadingintotheregionalcompetition.Massiehas droppedatleastaminuteeachracehehasranallseason,startingtheyearwithatimeof24minutesandroundingitoff toalow19‐minutes. Mason,thoughmovingquicklythroughthepack,isnottheonlyrunnertoshaveminutesfromhistime.EighthGrader MichaelWhitehasdroppeddownsubstantiallyfromhisopenseasonmeettime.ThoughnoteligiblefortheStateMeet, Whitehasbeenrunningwiththehighschoolboysmostoftheyear.Michaelstartedtheyearrunninginmiddleschool eventssothechangefromonegrouptothenextwasachallengingexperienceforhim.SinceMichael’s irstvarsityrace hehascutaboutfourminutesfromhistime. Theonlyotherrunneronthecourseisyourstruly.LikesaidaboveI'minagoodpositionforSaturdaysmeetanda chanceatState.GoingintothemeetI'mbothexcitedanddiscouraged.I'mgladI'mwhereI'matnow,butalways wishedbymylastmeetofmysenioryearmyrunningtimeswouldbesomuchquicker.Mybesttimeoftheseason... 18:50;whichhappenstobethesametimeIstartedtheseasonwith.SoIguessthroughouttheyearIwouldn'tsayI've improvedorgottenworse,justthatI'mwhereI'mat,andreadytogiveitallIhaveonemoretime. 11 OctoberServesUpTricksforLCHSVolleyball OurLadyLionsVolleyballsquadenteredthemonthofOctoberwitha recordof18wins,and11losses.Otherthantwobattleslosttoregion leaderandfavorite,Raceland,theLadyLionshadsplitwithRussell,and defeatedGreenupCounty. TheLadyLionsentered63rdDistrictaction lyinghighandonahot streak.Thetournament,athome,seemedwithintheirgrasp.Sadly, RussellcameintoLewiswithanaxetogrindandapointtoprove.Our LadyLionsfellinthreestraight,sweptbytheLadyDevils25‐21,25‐20, and25‐18.TheDistricttitle...gone. The inalswereset:RacelandandRussell.Racelandcameawayvic‐ toriousandwereheadingforaRegioncrownatpresstime. 12 PotterandCottinghamtoStarin“TheMatchmaker” TheLewisCountyHighSchoolDramaDepartment,underthedirectionofMissKaylaStafford,willperform“The Matchmaker”byThortonWilderonNovember7that6pmandNovember8that1pm.StarringCayleyPotterasDolly andLoganCottinghamasHorace,theplayisahumorousriotthatwillhaveaudienceslaughingoutloudandcryingout formore! “Theplay,setinthe1880s,opensatthehomeofHoraceVandergelder(from theGermandasGeld,“money”),inYonkers,NewYork.Awidower,andimmense‐ lyproudofbeingahalf‐millionaire,HoraceispreparingforatriptoNewYork City.Havingrejectedthesuitofanartist,AmbroseKemper(DevonWatson),who wantstomarryhisniece,Erma(EdenJordan),Horacehasdecidedtosendhis nieceawaytofrustrateanyweddingplans.AfterVandergelderleaves,DollyLevi, afriendofhislatewife,andutilizedbyHoraceasamarriage‐broker,enters.Dolly issympathetictotheniece’sromance,andagreestohelpErmaandAmbrose.
