LARRY R. CHAVIS - FESTIVAL GRAND MARSHAL
Larry Chavis is a 1972 graduate of Pembroke State
University with a BS in accounting. He received his
MBA from Campbell University. He is also a graduate of Mid Management Banking Program through
UNC-Chapel Hill, and the graduate program from
the University of Wisconsin in Bank Controllership.
Mr. Chavis’ parents are Agnes Chavis and the late
George Chavis. His wife is Loleta Hunt Chavis and
their children are Melissa, and Alex. He was reared
by his grandparents Gus and Flowers Hunt.
He served 2 years in the US Army as an Interrogator
of POW’s in Vietnam 1968-1969 in the 11th Armored
Calvary under George Patten III. He was employed
with Southern National Bank from 1972 until 1987.
Upon leaving SNB, Mr. Chavis' position was that of
Vice President in the Accounting Department.
He began his career with Lumbee Guaranty Bank in
July 1987 as President and CEO and Board of
Directors. Since that time Lumbee Guaranty Bank
has expanded from one location to now having
fourteen locations.
Mr. Chavis is also very active in many organizations such as the NC Banking Commission,
Chairperson of his North Carolina Bankers Peer Group. Board of Director on the North Carolina
Bankers Association and the Community Bankers Association. Advancement, Kiwanis, GlenFlora
Board, UNCP – Foundation & Endowment Board, Thomas Family Center for Entrepreneurship
Advisory Board, UNCP Business Dept. Advisory Board, Southeastern Utilities Development Board,
Southeastern Regional Medical Center Foundation Board, Southeastern Regional Medical Center
Board of Trustees, New Schools Project, Duke Heart Center, North Carolina Indian Economic
Development Initiative, North Carolina Economic Development Initiative, The VFW, South
Robeson Booster Club, and Treasurer and Deacon of Reedy Branch Baptist Church, member of
ICBA- National Minority Bank Council, President of the Cape Fear Council of Boy Scouts. He has
been president of many of these organizations.
Mr. Chavis has been awarded UNC Pembroke Distinguished Alumni ,"BUSINESS MAN OF THE
YEAR" through LRDA in 1992. He has also received the 1999 Silver Beaver Award from Boy
Scouts, Governors Award, Distinguished Service to Agriculture, Business Person of the Year
Regional Center 2006 UNCP , President of Kiwanis & Kiwanian of the Year, President of Jaycees,
UNCP Chancellor’s Club, and Economic Advancement of Indian People Award (United Tribes of
N.C.) and many more awards.
Mr. Chavis loves all types of sports and he loves to travel.
