Club History - January 2014
Bill Kalb - NRVC Historian
The club basically was formed in the later part of 1984 by a keen restorer of old cars Mike Gallagher and some of
Mike’s mates, it was alleged that several of the guys discussed in Mike Gallagher’s shed to start a car club, as a
result of this the club had its first ad hoc meeting with (35) in attendance a Car Club was established and was
called the Over 30’s Car Club.
The first Steering committee meeting was held on 6th November 1984. The club name was debated and all
agreed the club was to be called Newcastle Restored Vehicle Club.
The next meeting took place on the 27th November 1984 at Cardiff Workers Club. Mike Gallagher presiding and
the NRVC Constitution and Rules were formed and handed out to members for discussion at the club’s next
meeting.
At the next meeting on the 11th December 1984 there were (25) in attendance and the Club’s Constitution and
Rules were agreed by all. The office bearers were; President: Mike Gallagher, President Elect: John Morton,
Secretary: Paul Williams, Treasurer: Allan Williams. Some of the members attending this meeting were - Tom
Myles, Tom Broadbent, Brian Blyth, Peter Taylor, David Mackay, John Kearns, Steven Elliot, Rod Hocking, Ian
Taylor, Steve Morton, Paul Williams, Neville Elliott, Jeff Pickard, Darrell Smith, Doug Marshall, Ernie Parks, Ken
Michael, Bill Budd, Reub Austin, and Allan Wise.
Membership fee was $10.00 PA. The club’s first income was $290 dollars from the 29 members.
The first Good Oil was completed by Doug Marshall.
In 1988 – Newcastle Restored Vehicle Club Inc became a registered incorporated association in NSW under
Associations Incorporation Act.
These records are the best I can find amongst the NRVC club’s historical records.

Australia Day Maritime Festival - Newcastle Foreshore
Sunday 26th January2014
NRVC left the Fish Markets in Newcastle at 7.30am and made their way up to the
Foreshore. We managed to angle park a record number of vehicles, 42 in total. Wow
- 80 members plus 1 Mannequin (Miss McPhee) attended the Australia Day Maritime
Festival. The day started off a little cool with most of us needing our jackets, we seen
8 dolphins in the harbour on their early morning swim coming up for air.
Ross had his HQ Holden Kingswood back on the road after full restoration looking very nice. Everybody set up
their little piece of paradise and sat back and enjoyed the day.
We ate prawns and salad for lunch. (yummo) ☺ we also celebrated Marilyn Vella’s 59yrs and 12mths Birthday
with a cake, just as she blew the candles out, the Fort Scratchley’s gun was fired... right on queue!
Fort Scratchley was packed with people who watched the fort’s old guns being fired every half-hour. On the
water, Coal Ships went about their normal business, and the tugs danced a different tune when they performed
‘‘tugboat ballet’’ Speed boats were out with skiers behind them as well some Yachts they sailed out into the
heads and continued on down the coast, along with 4 Tiger Moths who also entertained the large crowd.
Flies and mosquitoes were largely absent from the perfect summer’s day, but the air was sliced open when three
F-18 Hornet fighter jets who tore across the sky at lunchtime on their way home to Williamtown after their
Australia Day display in Sydney.
As the historic Catalina Flying Boat dropped in, flying low over the harbour, the big 80-inch gun went off. The
president of the Fort Scratchley’s Historical Society, Frank Carter said it was one of the best crowds he had ever
seen.
Our rare and very valuable club certificates were presented to Lynn Farmer, Errol Thompson and Gerald Hide.
Well Done!!
A great day for NRVC, you should all be very proud of your club!
Roving Reporter: Natalie Towndrow ☺
Rickshaws 30th Anniversary MAD Day 2nd February 2014
NRVC started to arrive at Bargoed House Swansea from 7am, we were 1st in the gate to save a beautiful spot for
our cars-bikes 42 vehicles in total. (well done) On arriving each vehicle was given a Rickshaws 30th Anniversary
Banner.
In general a fantastic roll up of everything on wheels – from cars, hot rods motorbikes, trucks and even a boat on
wheels.
Having found a nice cool spot under trees out of the sun on the foreshore of Lake Macquarie we settled in & had
a nice cup of coffee while watching the arrival of a large variety of vehicles enter Bargeod House for the
Rickshaws 30th Anniversary MAD Day. Bargeod House fired up the BBQ and had egg and bacon rolls for sale
within minutes.
Magnificent views of the lake from Pulbah Island to Wangi Point.
As usually some of the cars were a real inspiration & a wonder to many new idealists & I overheard people
saying this was the biggest show they had seen here.
Once again the very rare and valuable NRVC Certificates were awarded to Sam Wilson for his Datsun, Ross
Skillen for his HQ Holden Kingswood & Michael Lockwood for his Torana.
.
Barry was also lucky to have won a prize in the Rickshaw Raffle; he received a jacket and a cap.
Approximately 600 vehicles attended the MAD Day.
Well Done NRVC! ☺

Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest Mid Week Run
Thursday 23rd January 2014
Started off with the weather being overcast and rain. We were wondering if we were going to get any cars turn
up. When we arrives at Hexham McDonalds there were already 7 cars including ours. Most people were
standing around drinking coffee to keep warm.
On departure from McDonalds with 7 cars and 14 people we travelled onto Riverside Park where we parked
some members had morning tea while others just mingled around talking and laughing.
Onto Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest we go, travelling in formation still with light rain we arrived at Tea Gardens about
11.30am. We all decided to have lunch at the pub we all order our meals and sat around eating, drinking and
having a really good time.
With belly’s full and being hydrated we set off to Hawks Nest, on the way I heard a small noise coming from the
front of our car, Geaorge thought it was our chairs rattling in the boot. Once George started turning the corner
and the braking there was a large banging noise again, so we parked on the flat so the investigation could begin,
the outcome of this was a loose calliper – Oh well said George “it’s nothing we will get home ok” I wasn’t taking
any chances so i travelled with Ross back to Hexham McDonalds (that’s our ice-cream stop) Daniel Paoletti was
very brave he ended up travelling back with George.
This was George and Fabio’s 1st run they had to organise, a few glitches but overall they did a good job and
everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Members Present were: John & Doreen Bailey, Bronwyn & Ken Fitzsimmons, Collene & Bill Kalb,
Natalie Towndrow, Ross Skillen, Fab & Dianne Paoletti, Daniel & Michael Paoletti, George & Marilyn Vella.
The very rare and valuable NRVC Mid Week Run Certificate was awarded to John & Doreen Bailey in the VW
Kombi.

If you have any items for sale……it goes in here
Neville McFadyen’s run up to Chichester Dam 16th February 2014
We got away from McDonalds Hexham about 8.50am with 8 cars and headed towards Clarence Town we past
some lovely countryside that some of us had never been that way before.
It was sprinkling with rain most of the way. On arriving in Clarence Town we were fortunate that the rain held off
long enough for us to enjoy a nice warm cuppa, sweets & cake.
Dave Caban had his Dad Fred with him for the day. Fabio, Daniel, Michael and Timmy joined us up there.
From there we drove up to Chichester Dam with 9 cars & still raining. Oh well we made the most of it with our
gazebo & tables we set up a perfect spot for lunch. Actually it worked in our favour with the rain, as there was
plenty of parking for our cars ☺ some people had their BBQ while others had cold meat, sandwiches & salads.
The rain seemed to get heavier as the day went on, never the less
we all had fun, and we even fed the birds from the BBQ and got
some great photos of them.
Overall it was a nice relaxing day, and everyone had a great time.
Roving Reporter Natalie Towndrow ☺
Thanks Neville
