BRAND NEW DECADE
NEW MTFL DIVISION
CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY

introduce the brand new MTFL
Division Championship Trophy
at the 2010 AGM
‘In seasons past,
some players
expressed their
desire to have a
trophy that was
significant to
compete for.’
The 2010 MTFL held its AGM on Wednesday,
March 24th at the Mississauga Valleys Community
Centre in the Hazel McCallion Room. The primary
theme of the 2010 AGM was ‘Communication’. In
an effort to improve communication between the
League and its Members, teams were asked to
send two team representatives to attend the AGM.
One being a captain, and the other being a player
that is not a captain. The Executive Committee’s
goal was to meet other players, facilitate active
communication and interaction, encourage more
involvement from more of the League’s over 500
active Members. This new approach was a great
success as the 2010 AGM had quite possibly its
best attendance in recent years.
First major item of discussion on the agenda
was the Executive Committee. All four of the 2009
Executive Committee Members; John Schiebel,
Bill Chan, Jeff Ingram and Glenn Stevenson were
voted back in to operate the League for the 2010
season. Although it has not been an issue in the
past, there was a concern that in any given year,
the League Membership could choose not to vote
the majority of the Executive Committee back to
operate the League. The Executive Committee
took the time to explain that the League did not
have an actual proper documented procedure in
place that clearly outlined on how to proceed
should this scenario occur. With the best interest
of the League Membership in mind, the current
Executive Committee proposed, should this actual
scenario occur, the League would immediately
dissolve, the AGM would immediately conclude,
all performance bonds would be returned to their
rightful owners, and any existing additional funds
in the League’s bank account would be donated to
a locally recognized and registered charity. This
proposal passed by unanimous vote.
For the second year in a row, Boston Pizza
(Square One location) took part in the AGM. They
provided those in attendance with some great
pizza from their restaurant. Community Relations
Coordinator, Jaclyn Fazio, explained to the League
Membership in attendance on how they can take
advantage of their Team Sponsorship Program. As
the official Restaurant Community Partner of the
MTFL for the 2010 season, Jaclyn was proud to
announce that their location would be awarding
each eligible member from each of the Division
Championship teams, a $10 gift voucher to be
used at their location. In addition to that, the
Most Valuable Player from each of the Division
Championship games, would receive a ‘Dinner for
2

Two’ certificate. Jaclyn also made a cheque
presentation to Bill Chan of the Arrows with a
cheque for over $250 for participating in their
restaurant’s Team Sponsorship Program.
In the past, some players had expressed their
desire to have a trophy that was significant to
compete for. The League in previous seasons had
presented an individual trophy to each Division
Champion. Often at times, these trophies were
not updated, well maintained, or required some
extra effort by a member of Executive Committee
to re-acquire it from past Division Champions.
This concept was abandoned several seasons ago.
The Executive Committee saw there was a need to
revisit this concept of recognition. In order for this
concept to work, it was deemed necessary that
there be an improvement on the previous process.
The objective was to secure a single, brand new
trophy to be presented to all Division Champions
after each Championship game, with the League
maintaining possession of it and entrusted to
update it annually. A trophy was commissioned to
be designed and built. Mulligan Woodworking,
manufactured the wood base of the trophy and
Champion Trophies supplied the metal cup. Both
businesses are located in the City of Mississauga.
The new trophy was unveiled and presented for the
very first time at the 2010 AGM. Those who were
in attendance were privileged to see it first. This
trophy was designed to represent a symbol of
pride and excellence, unique to the MTFL. Truly a
trophy worthy of competing for.
During the Open Discussion, several items were
brought up for vote to the League Membership:
 League Dissolution - To this point in the
League’s history, there was not an outlined
procedure in place on record, for the event of
a potential League Dissolution. This was
item was addressed earlier on in the AGM
during the Executive Committee Member
vote. A proposal was presented as a means
to ensure the League’s stability for future
seasons. The vote passed unanimously and
was reaffirmed.
 League Finances - Just as it was with League
Dissolution, there was no actual policy in
place for League Finances. The League for
many seasons has voluntarily provided the
full transparency of financial information to
the League Membership and public, however
it was not a requirement. To ensure that this
practice would continue in future seasons, by
2010 SEASON REVIEW
future Executive Committees, the current
Executive Committee proposed it be made a
mandatory policy to provide full disclosure of
financial statements on an annual basis at
the AGM. The vote passed unanimously.
 Increasing Number of Starting Players - There
was a genuine concern by some that games
starting with the minimum requirement of five
players would likely be lopsided contests.
Results have shown this was often the case.
The proposal was to increase the number
required minimum players to start a game, to
six. The vote of this proposal did not pass.
 Mandatory Uniforms - As a means to improve
the professional image of the League and
assist game officials with identifying players,
it was proposed that jersey/shirts would be
of like colour and numbered. The vote of this
proposal was passed.
The MTFL and the Toronto
Argonauts Football Club would
continue its partnership in 2010,
hosting a 2nd Annual MTFL
Night at the Rogers Centre.
A group of people having a great
time at the 2nd Annual MTFL Night
 Toronto Argonauts Partnership - After last
season’s successful, first-ever MTFL Game
Night, an open discussion was held hear
feedback from the League Membership.
Generally most of it was very positive and a
proposal was made to run the event again.
This vote of this proposal was passed.
 Year-End Banquet - For a few seasons, some
players mentioned their desire for the League
to hold a year-end banquet. The League had
run this as an annual event many years ago
and some expressed that they would like to
see it return. It was proposed to attempt to
put one together for this season, follow up at
next year’s AGM and determine if it is would
lead to holding it as an annual event. The
vote of this proposal passed.
The MTFL said goodbye to six teams in 2010.
Not returning to the League were Brick, Jaguars,
Kings, Lightning, Pinkofsky Gators, and Wrecked.
Four new teams joined the MTFL for their very first
season of action. They were Death From Above,
Dirrty Birdz, Offerdahl’s Ornery’s, and Punishers.
Some of the players from Brick merged with the
Chargers, as did some of the Lightning players
with the newly formed Dirrty Birdz.
The season kicked off a 13-week schedule on
Monday, May 17th. The League, as it was last
year, was comprised of five divisions; ‘AA’, ‘A’, ‘B’,
‘C’ and ‘D’.
2nd Annual MTFL Game Night hosted by the
Toronto Argonauts was held on Friday August 20th
at the Rogers Centre. The Argos faced their crossprovince rivals, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Argos
led this low scoring affair the entire game, only to
lose it the fourth quarter. When the final whistle
blew, the Ti-Cats won 16-12. Over 200 players,
friends, family and game officials from the MTFL
and the MOA, attended this night, and fun was
had by all.
Sticking with tradition, the MTFL held its 4th
Annual Friendly game at the Mississauga Valleys
along with a Division Championship Game on
September 1st. There was a great turnout for the
Friendly and were well represented by all divisions.
The atmosphere was
exciting as many came
out to take part in the
festivities. I was the
greatest single turnout
since the Annual
Friendly began. The
‘Black Shirts’ defeated
the ‘White Shirts’ by a count of 25-8 in a fun and
very entertaining game. The Mississauga News
was present to cover the event, and Boston Pizza
Square One along with a pair of Toronto Argonauts
Cheerleaders were on hand to add some more to
the experience once again.
The League would like congratulate all of our
MTFL 2010 Division Champions; Trojans (‘AA’),
Gridiron (‘A’), Steelers (‘B’), Super Troopers (‘C’)
and Death From Above (‘D’).
The League held a Year-End Banquet at Boston
Pizza Square One on September
8th for players, family and
friends. Those who
were in attendance,
got to meet a pair of
Toronto Argonauts
Cheerleaders, look at
and take photos with
the MTFL Trophy, watch a
slideshow of photos from
games and events throughout the season, and
enjoy some great complimentary food.
The 39th season was another one to remember.
There were a lot of competitive and exciting
games, some of which were photographed and
covered by the Mississauga News. It’s another
season in the books and we’re looking forward to
our 40th season next year!

‘AA’ DIVISION
RISE OF THE TROJANS
The Hawks were looking to fly atop the
’AA’ Division in 2010 to defend their title.
Pinkofsky Gators did not return for 2010
so a rematch was out of the question.
This opened the door for another team to
take on the challenge of taking it away
from the returning Champions.
Promoted from the ‘A’ Division were the
Gamecocks-Enforcers (previously known
as Gamecocks) and the Saints. Both
teams competed in the 2009 ‘A’ Division
Championship in which the Gamecocks
came out victorious.
Rebels, Spartans, and Trojans were all
back for another shot at glory in hopes of
dethroning Hawks.
A new addition to the league and ‘AA’
Division were the Dirrty Birdz. This team
was comprised of some players from the
now defunct Lightning squad that did not
return from 2009.
The Rebels got out of the gates real fast
racking up five straight wins and struggled
down the stretch. The Hawks staggered
throughout the season and appearing as
if their team would not be in a position to
defend their title. The Spartans looked
unbeatable as they won four straight
heading into the playoffs, building much
needed momentum and earning a firstround bye.

The defending ‘AA’ Champion Hawks finished the regular season below 0.500 with a
record of 4-6, earning themselves a first-round match up with the Dirrty Birdz. The
Hawks were grounded in the battle of the birds by a count of 36-6, guaranteeing that a
new Champion would be crowned. The Rebels advanced past the Saints 20-8, and the
Trojans defeated a very tough Gamecocks-Enforcers squad, 36-24. To no ones surprise,
all the top seeds advanced to the Semi-Finals.
In the Semi-Final action, the Spartans used their week off to their advantage as they
clipped the wings of the Dirrty Birdz, 36-8. The Trojans faced a very determined Rebels
squad in which both teams displayed some serious offensive fireworks in a high-scoring
affair. When the final whistle blew, the Trojans came away with the hard fought win by a
score of 53-38.
The stage was set for a battle of historic proportions as the Spartans faced off against
the Trojans in the ‘AA’ Championship Game. The game
remained very closed with both teams battling back

‘A’ DIVISION
GRIDIRON GLORY
With the defending Division Champions
and the Finalists both moving up to the
‘AA’ Division, the Championship title for
the ‘A’ Division was up for grabs.
The Gamecocks, last year’s Champions,
and Saints, last year’s finalists were both
promoted to the ‘AA’ Division leaving
those who stayed, to battle over the title.
Angels, Axemen, Hustlin’ Owls and King
Gators were looking forward to taking
their shot at the newly vacated ‘A’ Division
crown. New to the fray were Gridiron and
Reapers, who were promoted from the ‘B’
Division. Jaguars did not return for play in
2010 and Bears after a 1-9 season,
moved down to the ‘B’ Division.
Introduced to the group were Punishers,
a brand new team to the League that
found a home in the ‘A’ Division.
Hustlin’ Owls jumped out to a quick
start winning their first three games. The
Axemen and King Gators struggled early
and often. Hustlin’ Owls and Gridiron
climbed to the top and battled through
the season to contend with the Angels,
however this was not to be. In the end, a
win separated first from second and third.
The Angels were the real story as they
closed off the season by finishing off with
a seven game win streak to secure the
valuable first-round bye heading into the
playoffs.

2010 ‘A’ STANDINGS

Reapers
Axemen
The opening round of the ‘A’ Division playoffs saw no upsets, as all of the top seeds
defeated their opponents. Reapers managed to win a close one over Axemen by a count
of 27-19, Gridiron won their meeting with Punishers 21-15, and Hustlin’ Owls topped
King Gators in a close and low scoring contest, 13-7.
In the Semi-Finals, the Angels faced a very competitive Reapers team. The game was
close in the first half. In the end, the rest the Angels earned from the week prior was the
difference as they advanced by defeating the Reapers, 19-6. Gridiron faced a Hustlin’
Owls squad that defeated them twice during the regular season and redemption was
their goal. In the end, the Hustlin’ Owls were not able to match the high powered offence
of Gridiron, as they advance by a count of 39-6.
The Angels and Gridiron met only once in the regular season, resulting in a 25-14 win
in week 4 for Gridiron. Angels were looking to parlay their number one seed ranking into
the edge to come out with the victory in the ‘A’ Division
Championship. Defence was the story of the game as
W L T PCT PF PA
both teams were shutting down any chance of a full
8 2 0 0.800 287 168
drive often. When the game had finished, it was the
7 3 0 0.700 242 170
team that completed one more key drive that closed
the deal. Gridiron, no longer with their team mascot,
7 3 0 0.700 211 150
the little garden gnome, edged Angels in an incredibly
5 5 0 0.500 192 190
exciting game for the books, by a score of 18-12 . This
4 6 0 0.400 170 212
win was for him.

‘B’ DIVISION
STEELING THE SHOW
The Trailer Park Boyz were back to try
and repeat in 2010 as the ‘B’ Division
Champions, but the landscape of the
group had changed with a lot of new
teams coming in.
Moving up to the ‘B’ Division from the
‘C’ Division were the Division Champions,
New World Order, along with the finalists,
Greatest Show on Turf. Ashanti Warriors,
Meadowvale’s Finest, Razorbacks and
Steelers all returned for action in the ‘B’
Division.
The Bears returned to the ’B’ Division
after one season in the ‘A’ Division. Being
promoted to the ’A’ Division were Gridiron
and 2009 ‘B’ Division finalist, Reapers.
The defending Champions, Trailer Park
Boyz struggled early on in the season and
finished with a 4-6 mark. However after a
3-5-2 record in 2009, there was still hope
as they looked to make it up in the
playoffs en route to another title.
Just as in the past couple of seasons,
New World Order and Greatest Show on
Turf found no problem in adjusting to their
promotion to a higher division. They
picked up right were they left off in 2009
making a run for first and second place.
The middle of the pack was a log jam as
some tie-breakers were used to separate
the pack at season’s end.

The opening round of the ‘B’ Division playoffs showed some excitements. Greatest
Show on Turf showed why they finished first overall, by handing the Razorbacks a 32-0
loss. In an exciting game between the second seeded New World Order and seventh
seeded Meadowvale’s Finest, the heavily favoured New World Order found themselves
down 12-0 at the half. It required a second half comeback and overtime for 2009 ‘C’
Division Champions, New World Order to extend their season. The final score of the
game was 13-12. In a slight upset, the Steelers defeated the Bears 18-6 and the
Ashanti Warriors ended the Trailer Park Boyz hopes of winning back-to-back titles by
knocking them out, 18-7.
The Semi-Finals looked to be quite entertaining. In game that many expected to be a
lot closer than it had, New World Order upended Ashanti Warriors 21-6, allowing them to
advance to their third straight Division Championship,
with all three being in different divisions. The number
W L T PCT PF PA
one seeded Greatest Show on Turf, faced off against a
8 2 0 0.800 242 129
extremely tough Steelers team. The game was tied
7 3 0 0.700 218 96
right to the final minutes of the fourth quarter when a
single sealed the fate of Greatest Show on Turf. The
5 4 1 0.550 178 132
Steelers advanced to the finals by a count of 14-13,
5 4 1 0.550 165 229

5 5 0 0.500 144 180
between New World Order and Greatest Show on Turf.
4 6 0 0.400 140 181
The ‘B’ Division Championship was all about defence
as both teams were making big plays. In the end, the
3 7 0 0.300 162 246
Steelers won out by a count of 13-6.

‘C’ DIVISION
‘C’ DIVISION RECAP
2010 was a chance for a brand new ‘C’
Division Champion to be crowned. Last
year’s Champions, New World Order
moved up to ‘B’ Division, along with last
year’s finalists, Greatest Show on Turf.
Changes in the ‘C’ Division saw Kings
not returning for 2010, Brick merging with
Chargers, and Ghosts moving down to ‘D’
Division. Three teams moved up from ‘D’
Division, last year’s Champions, Gang
Green, last year’s finalists, Super Troopers
and second year team, Wolves.
Super Troopers jumped out to a quick
start and never looked back, finishing the
season 10-0. Wolverines, who often fare
quite well in the ‘C’ Division every season
and contend for the title, finished 6-4 in
the regular season and in second place
thanks to a tie-breaker over Gang Green
who also finished with a 6-4 record.
The Hurricanes and Chargers finished
tied with a 4-6 record, but the Hurricanes
edged the Chargers also through a tiebreaker. Wolves were not able to catch a
break during their transitional move to the
‘C’ Division, and finished winless at 0-10.
Heading into the playoffs, the Super
Troopers were heavy favourites to take it
all after dominating all season.

Hurricanes
Two games started off the opening round of the ‘C’ Division playoffs. Last season’s ‘D’
Division Champions, Gang Green knocked out Wolves by a score of 38-14. Hurricanes
doubled up on the Chargers, 18-9 to advance to the Semi-Finals.
Both the Super Troopers and Wolverines were off on byes the previous week, and were
looking forward to getting into some playoff action. Number one seeded Super Troopers
took care of business by defeating the Hurricanes, 34-12. Gang Green and Wolverines
faced off in the other game, with both splitting the season series one game a piece. As a
fairly even match up, many expected it to be a close one. In the end, Gang Green edged
out Wolverines 28-24, to set up a rematch of last year’s ‘D’ Division Championship.
Before any players took the field, many could sense that this game was going to one of
epic proportions and it was highly anticipated. It was a rematch many were hoping for,
and Super Troopers had been waiting all season for a chance to redeem their loss in last
year’s ‘D’ Division Championship. Having swept the regular season series would not be
enough as in 2009 they also played well against this same Gang Green squad during the
regular season. Only a Division Championship would
W L T PCT PF PA
suffice. At the half, the game remained close and it
10 0 0 1.000 355 81
appeared that Gang Green could pull out another win.
In the second half, it was a completely different story
6 4 0 0.600 267 204
as Super Troopers pulled it together and won the game
6 4 0 0.600 182 192
by a count of 20-6.

‘D’ DIVISION
WINNING ABOVE THEM ALL
The ‘D’ Division was looking for a new
Champion in 2010 as Gang Green has
moved up to the ‘C’ Division, along with
last year’s finalist, Super Troopers and
Wolves, who finished in third in 2009.
Returning for a chance to claim that
title were Arrows and ThunderCats.
Wrecked chose to end their short history
with the MTFL.
Ghosts were looking for some new life,
as they joined the ‘D’ Division from being
in ‘C’ Division last year.
New to the MTFL and the ‘D’ Division
were Death From Above and Offerdahl’s
Ornery’s.
Ghosts started off by flying right of the
gate and rattled off five straight wins to
start the season. Newcomers Death From
Above showed they too could compete,
winning seven straight games through the
middle of the season.
Arrows and ThunderCats continued their
struggles from a season ago, winning
three games a piece, and the rookies on
the block, Offerdahl’s Ornery’s found out
how tough it was to win a game even in
the ‘D’ Division.
Heading into the playoffs, it appeared
that Death From Above and Ghosts would
be meeting in the finals.
Division Playoffs
Only one game opened the ‘D’ Divison playoffs in the opening round, as the Arrows
faced off against Offerdahl’s Ornery’s in a battle of cellar dwellers for a chance to face
Death From Above in the Semi-Finals. In a game which was supposed to be fairly even,
Offerdahl’s Ornery’s grounded the Arrows with ease, by a count of 26-1.
In the semi-finals, the Ghosts faced off against ThunderCats in one of the matches.
Ghosts managed to take care of the opposition by blanking them and winning the game
25-0. In the other match up, both teams new to the MTFL faced off. Death From Above
defeated their expansion counterpart by a score of 42-6.
The ‘D’ Division Championship, fittingly pitted the only two teams in the division that
finished with a record above 0.500, Death From Above and Ghosts. During the regular
season, they split the season series right down the middle, 1-1-1. So this game was for
bragging rights in a really big way. In the first half, Death From Above started with a
modest lead and Ghosts struggled to get their offence going. When they returned at the
half, Ghosts still showed a spark and looked to try and make a comeback, however all
attempts to reach the endzone failed as the newcomers, Death From Above defeated
Ghosts by a score of 27-0.
