Glacier is just a half-hour drive from Kalispell
but when you hike a mile down one of its
trails, you’ll feel a million miles from everything.
At the height of summer, wildflowers bloom
abundantly along Glacier’s 730 miles of trails
and you may even spot some of America’s
most diverse fauna, including elk, mountain
goats, lynx, wolves and one of the largest
remaining grizzly populations in the lower
48 states.
Glacier’s cultural history
dates back at least 10,000
years to the ancestors of
American Indian tribes
in the area today; the
Blackfeet, who controlled
prairies east of the mountains, and the Salish and
Kootenai who lived in
the western valleys.
of Going-to-the-Sun Road is open to vehicles
from early June into October depending on
weather and snow levels.
Spring, fall and winter, Glacier offers a whole
new dimension. Autumn burnishes the larch
and birch to gold and bikers have the road to
themselves with sectional closings of Goingto-the-Sun Road. In winter, strap on skis or
snowshoes and head up the unplowed road
past Lake McDonald.
The Blackfeet refer to the
continental divide as the
backbone of the world.
Educational snowshoe hikes are available in
the park throughout the winter and backcountry guided adventures can be reserved
year-round. Visit www.nps.gov/glac or call park
headquarters at 406-888-7800 for more
information and road information.
Glacier Park is home
or host to 270 species of
birds, including golden
eagles, harlequin ducks
and dippers.
The famed 50-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road,
carved out of the sheer mountain slopes, is
a National Historic Landmark. Considered
one of the most epic engineering feats in the
world, the road climbs 3,000 feet to the 6,646foot high Logan Pass at the top of the Continental Divide.
Explorers in all of our National Parks and
Forests also have the option of renting
Forest Service cabins and lookouts. These
cabins offer something a little sturdier than
a tent, but still require lodgers to be selfsufficient. Many of these cabins and lookouts are open year-round, so you can
explore the area in all seasons. Reserve
Our state parks offer some truly beautiful

turquoise lake fed by numerous 200-foot

Swan River Nature Trail
Get away from it all without going far from
the city at Lone Pine State Park. With trails
ranging from well-surfaced to steep single
track, topped by a terrific Visitor Center and
fantastic bird’s eye views of the entire valley,
there’s something for everyone.
An elaborate network of fat tire single track
through woods and meadows, easy enough
for casual day-trippers, but able to throw
down the gauntlet for weekend warriors.
The Swan River Nature Trail begins in the
town of Bigfork and follows the wild and
picturesque Swan River. This level and wide
trail is a local favorite.

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi and its
glacial waters are among the most pristine in the world. A scenic drive around
the lake offers spectacular scenery and
160 miles of shoreline dotted with accessible beaches.
Launch out in a whitewater raft along the
wild and scenic Middle and North Forks
of the Flathead River, starting at Glacier
National Park. You’re sure to get wet, and
you’ll definitely have a wild ride. From familyfriendly day or overnight trips to thrill-seeking
week-long hiking and rafting excursions, you’ll
experience Montana at its most breathtakingly beautiful, and wish the trip would
never end.
is famous for fishing, with experienced
anglers trolling for Makinaw trout, and
novices pulling out lake whitefish and yellow
perch. A boat is required to get the most
from a day at the lake, and visitors can rent
their own or go out with an experienced
guide to find the best hotspots.
At 27 miles long and 15 miles wide, Flathead
Lake covers nearly 200 square miles. With
a maximum depth of more than 370 feet,
it’s the largest natural freshwater lake in the
Western United States, carved 12,000 years
ago by the glaciers of the last Ice Age.

A leisurely float or paddle down a calm river
can be nice, but sometimes you need something a little more exciting, and there’s plenty
of options.
Leave the lake and head north to the Flathead
River for a river adventure. The best section is between Tea Kettle fishing access site
in Columbia Falls to the Old Steel Bridge
access point in Kalispell – about 15 miles and
a four-hour float with plenty of islands to pull
over and picnic.
There are infinite places to “jump in” when
you visit Kalispell. It’s all about fun, all year.

With more than 500 fishable lakes and miles
of pristine rivers, the Flathead Valley offers endless opportunities for entertainment
on the water. Whether you take a leisurely
cruise around Flathead Lake, shoot the rapids
or try your hand at catching some of our
25 species of fish, you’re sure to have a great
time.
You could also float down the Stillwater River
from Whitefish toward Kalispell, or try the
Swan River in Bigfork for a more challenging
– but no less rewarding – journey.

A favorite excursion is from Dayton Harbor
to Wild Horse Island for lunch and a hike
around the native Palouse prairie grasslands
to spot the island’s herd of Rocky Mountain
bighorn sheep and wild horses.
And don’t forget a trip to Hungry Horse
Reservoir, with its beautiful, forested banks
and deep coves to explore. The 35-mile
long, 500-foot deep reservoir is open yearround for cutthroat and Whitefish angling
and trolling. That’s right; every season is
fishing season here! While Flathead Lake and
the reservoir remain mostly ice free, others
freeze over and ice fishing is a popular sport,
with several derbies throughout the season.

you want the most fun, head over to the
Woodland Ice Center at Woodland Park.
Known locally as “The Snow Globe Rink,” it’s
Montana’s only outdoor rink, and it earns
the name when the flakes are flying.
The rink is home to eight hockey teams with
more than 130 players. Skating lessons are
offered for kids and adults or join a pick-up
game of hockey, for kids as well as adult and
women’s groups.

If your picture of riders trekking through the
mountain is interrupted by a llama, don’t
worry, you’re not seeing things; we just do
things a little differently here.
Llama trekking provides a unique and helpful
experience for hikers on longer treks. The
South American animals are perfect partners
for hiking, with their gentle nature and
ability to browse on virtually anything. It
also helps that they can carry your gear,
meaning your “trek of a lifetime” doesn’t have
to involve a sore back or sweating over
your gear. Swan Mountain Llama Trekking
offers a wide range of treks for novice and
experienced hikers, and customized treks
for individuals or groups. For information
including trek dates and prices, call 800-9194416 or visit llamatreksmontana.com.
For a truly unique taste of winter you won’t
want to miss the World Ski Joring Championships in Whitefish. Ski joring involves a horse
towing a skier as fast as possible over a set
course that can include jumps or moguls,
and is great fun for spectators and participants alike.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Kalispell’s prestigious Glacier Symphony and
Chorale strikes a chord with enthusiastic
audiences. Each year the symphony delivers
an ambitious concert series drawing worldclass and emerging guest artists while the
75-voice Glacier Chorale adds its own rich
repertoire of performances throughout the
concert season.

Stampede rolls into town wowing jazz
enthusiasts. All summer long a variety of
musicians play the outdoor stage on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday afternoons at
Kalispell’s Depot Park. Enjoy free live
entertainment by northwest Montana’s
most talented musicians. Kalispell’s street
party, ThursdayFest, rocks the downtown
each week from June to September.
Live theatre graces the Flathead Valley at the
Bigfork Summer Playhouse and the Alpine
Theatre Project in Whitefish. World-class
professional productions range from classic
musicals to contemporary drama.
Hockaday
Museum of Art
The artistic legacy of Montana and Glacier
National Park come to life at the Hockaday.
Originally a Carnegie Library, this handsome
turn-of-the century building is now home to
a permanent collection of Montana artists,
rotating exhibits of nationally renowned and
emerging artists, and adult and children’s
classes. The Off the Wall Gallery offers
unique, Montana-inspired gifts.
The Hockaday also hosts Northwest
Montana’s largest and longest-running art
fair, Arts in the Park, now in its 44th year.
This three-day juried show at Depot Park
draws more than 100 artists, along with
wonderful food and live entertainment.
Museum at
Central School
Built in 1894 as Kalispell’s first school, today
this fully-restored four-story brick and stone
landmark tells the story of early Kalispell
from its founding in1887. The museum has
an authentic 1900s-era sawmill and tools as
well as Native American artifacts.

MOUNTAIN MADNESS
AIRSHOW, JULY
Conrad Mansion
On the National Register of Historic Places,
the Conrad Mansion is one of the most outstanding examples of Victoria-era elegance
and period architecture in the Pacific Northwest. The 26-room, 13,000 square foot Kirkland Cutter designed mansion, was built for
Kalispell’s founder Charles E. Conrad.
Raceway Park
When you feel the need for speed, Raceway
Park can satisfy, with one of the top-rated
short-tracks in the country. Every Saturday
through mid-September some of the fastest
cars and best drivers race the high-banked
quarter-mile oval.
With the mountains of Glacier National Park
and Northwest Montana as a backdrop, the
Mountain Madness Air Show featuring the
USAF Thunderbirds will offer one of the
most dramatic settings of the 2013 air show
season. This year we are proud to present
Kalispell’s own Capt Jason Curtis in the #6
opposing solo position. July 20-21, 2013
Northwest Montana
Fair, August
The NW Montana Fair is the largest event in
the Flathead Valley. Children of all ages enjoy
fun family centered activities. Held the third
week in August, featuring big name concerts,
animals in every category, carnival rides, three
performances of PRCA rodeo action, Indian
relay racing, great fair food and crazy things
like pig wrestling…the fair creates memories
that last all year long.
Some things haven’t changed much in
the past 100 years…outdoor concerts
and picnics in Depot Park, walks on
quiet streets under shady maples,
small shops where you’re welcomed
by proud owners. Kalispell residents
are a friendly bunch and are genuinely
glad to see you.

As Northwest Montana’s regional trade
center and fastest-growing city in the state,
Kalispell has a lot to offer. Our unique and
friendly blend of amazing outdoor activities,
cultural opportunities and business-friendly
environment combine to form one of the
best places to work and play in the nation.
FVCC is Montana’s largest comprehensive
two-year community college. State-of-theart facilities and cutting-edge technologies
provide students with an outstanding foundation for employment in fast-growing industries with Associate of Applied Science degrees and certificates in more than 50 fields.
For 12 years, 90 percent or more of FVCC
job-seeking graduates have successfully secured employment. Out of those employed
from the 2009-2010 graduating class, 94 percent work in Flathead and Lincoln Counties.
With more than 4,000 students enrolled annually, the college still offers small classroom
environments with outstanding and awardwinning faculty.
The college is an active participant in the
community as well. In 2008, the college
opened its Early Childhood Center, providing
students and the community access to premium child care. In 2010, FVCC, in partnership with Nourish the Flathead, established
the Flathead Community Garden, providing community members the opportunity
to rent garden plots during the summer
months. On Friday evenings during the fall
and spring semesters, patrons can enjoy delicious three-course dinners prepared in the
college’s instructional kitchen by the culinary
arts students.
FVCC Theatre produces exceptional entertainment and the Multicultural Affairs program sponsors numerous free lectures and
events throughout the year. The Continuing
Education Center provides affordable noncredit special interest courses, from Kid’s
College to customized workforce training
for lifelong learners of all ages.
FVCC is accredited by the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities. Together
with its distance learning division, the college
serves more than 100,000 students a year.
HIGH SCHOOLS
Opened in 2007, Glacier High School is a
243,000 square-foot campus featuring seven
science and computer labs, performance hall,
black-box theater and more.
In 2004, Flathead High School became the
only high school in Montana to earn accreditation under the International Baccalaureate
Diploma Programme. A challenging, two-year
college preparatory curriculum for juniors
and seniors, IB fosters global understanding
and responsible citizenship and culminates
with a diploma recognized for excellence
throughout the world.
Our freshman get a jump on their futures
with Freshman Academy – an innovative
student/teacher team approach focusing on
core academics, good study habits and character building. Glacier High School students
have the opportunity to enroll in AP classes
– rigorous, college-level courses for both
high school and university credit.
With the addition of Glacier High School,
Kalispell has two AA sports programs which
attract support in the community and consistently make play-off games and our speech
and debate teams regularly bring home
championships.
