Auditions For ‘Bugsy Malone’
Following the success of recent
school productions including A
Christmas Carol, Oliver! (2012),
Treasure Island (2011), Little Shop
of Horrors (2010), A Midsummer
Night’s Dream (2009) and The
Wiz (2008), the Drama, Music and
Art departments are now planning
for the 2014 production of Bugsy
Malone.
Auditions have taken place this
term for actors, singers and
dancers to be part of the musical
which tells the story set in New
York 1929, of two rival gangsters,
Fat Sam and Dandy Dan, and Dan
is in possession of a new weapon,
the ‘splurge gun’!
Mr Barron and Mr Edwards now have the
very difficult job of casting the play. Well
done to everyone that
came and performed for
us.”
As the custard pies fly, Bugsy Malone,
an all round nice guy, falls for Blousey
Brown, a singer at Fat Sam’s speakeasy, but his plans to woo Blousey
are spoilt by seductive songstress
Tallulah, who wants Bugsy for herself.
The musical is a family classic and
features the songs ‘Fat Sam’s Grand
Slam’, ‘So You Wanna Be A Boxer?’,
‘My Name Is Tallulah’ and many
more.
Mrs Braida in the Art
department has also
been busy planning the
scenery
for
the
production, along with
members of the Art
Club.
“We have been very impressed with
the standard of auditions this year,”,
said Miss Price “with students from
all years coming a have a go. Myself,
The production will take
place from 14th - 16th
July at the Lisvane Hall,
Scarborough College.
The Origins Of St Valentine
St Valentine is
the
patron
saint of lovers
and tradition
has it that on
his feast day,
14th February,
people
send
anonymous
cards
or
presents to the ones they love.
But who was the real St Valentine?
He was put into prison for helping
some Christians who were going
to be executed by Emperor
Claudius. While Valentine was in
prison, he healed the chief
warder’s daughter, who was blind,
and the warder and all his family
became Christians.
That is a question with many
possible answers.
When Emperor Claudius heard of
this, he said Valentine should be
executed and so, on February 269,
Valentine was clubbed to death,
before having his head chopped
off, just to make sure!
One Valentine was a priest who
lived in Rome in the third century.
In the same year, another man
named Valentine who was a

Bishop about 60 miles from Rome,
who was also put to death by
Emperor Claudius for being a
Christian.
Neither Saint seems to have
anything to do with young lovers
therefore it is thought by some
that the tradition of cards for
loved ones comes from the fact
that on this day of the year, birds
in the northern hemisphere begin
to pair up and start mating.
Others say the day is linked to the
pagan Roman festival named
Lupercalia when young men took
part in a lottery to find a partner.
Music Events
The school has some used PC
Towers which are available for
pupils to have to use at home.
The Music Department has a very with individuals also performing

number of events taking place.
Similarly, students can now also
have Microsoft Office free as a
download for use on school work.
This year the Music Department
have again entered the Eskdale
Festival which is an excellent
experience for the students. The
Choir, Orchestra and SAJO will all
compete on Thursday 13th March,
Please contact Mr Welch at
school for more info on either of
these offers.
SAJO are also taking part in the
National Music For Youth Competition in Hull Friday 14th March.
Spectators are invited to watch this
event which starts at 3pm in the
Albermale Music Centre.
Prayer to
St. Valentine
O St. Valentine,
lover of Christ and of
the Church, we ask
your intercession
that we may learn
how to love God
above all things, and
to selflessly love one
another. O glorious
St. Valentine, pray
for us, that we too
may have the
steadfast faith of the
martyrs.
