Extraordinary Pieces Cross the Block at
Connot Brothers Auction
Article & Photos by Connot Brothers Auction
This nice settee set brought a high bid
of $1,750.
When the May De Beel estate asked us, Connot Brothers Auction
of Valentine NE, to facilitate their sale, we could not have been more
thrilled or honored. As May De was an avid collector of a very wide
variety of antiques ranging from glass items to large furniture. From the
beginning, we knew this sale would take at least two days, if not more. The advertisement for this sale went all over Nebraska and to collectors all over the United
States, also countless other people and places through social media. This sale was the
talk of the town.

Article & photos by Brian Maloney
Donley’s Wild West Town in Union, Illinois recently played host to
what’s sure to become an annual event: Donley Auctions’ Fall
Classic 300 Live & Online Auction. As the name suggests, the sale
brought together three-hundred lots of top-quality antiques and collectibles of every description into one spectacular auction. And there
was no doubt as to the star of the event: the circa-1890 interior of the
famed Mt. Washington Soda Fountain & Drug Store of Haverhill,
Massachusetts that soared to a $170,000 hammer price!

Out & About
We hope that everyone has a Happy and Prosperous New Year
from all of us at Auction Action Antique News.
Christmas break was nice for all of us, but we are glad to be back to work.
The kids are ready to go back to school. I think more because that first
weekend is their Snowball Dance. Mekenzy had something everyday for
hockey except Christmas day. She even had a tournament in Beloit,
Wisconsin called the Snowball Shootout. The rink had tarp walls
Take The
and was very cold. They took third place even though they won all Challenge
Buy
their games, it was a point based tournament. Kenzy played one out
American!
of the three games, which had many break aways that she had to
stop. Brandon had four games over the break, although he lost them all, he played
very well. He is getting more into the play of the game and has become more
physical. He is a built like his father, strong and muscular, so coaches like how he
is built like a tank. They keep telling him to use that to his advantage.
When Out and About over our holiday break,

The kids had a fun filled Christmas. Santa
Clause fulfilled most of their Christmas list. They
had a fun this year, as it was different with Zetti.
He went with us to get our tree & loved every
minute of the hunt. He even loved eating the tree,
which you found him doing often. You could also
find him around the presents,
which he loved to open.

Union, Illinois’ Wild West Town Hosts Amazing Donley
Auctions’ Fall Classic 300
Article & Photos by Brian Maloney
Donley’s Wild West Town. If you’re a little kid you probably think of it as an old
west theme park, complete with shoot-em-ups and pony rides. Grown-ups might like
it more for its popular South Union Roadhouse Restaurant, or its 10,000 square foot
Banquet Hall. History buffs probably enjoy the Wild West Museum, with displays of
cowboy, mining, and Civil War artifacts - or for its world-class collection of antique
phonographs.
Of course, antique music-machine collectors know it very well as the host of the
world’s largest Antique Phonograph & Music Box Show, held there for nearly two
generations. And now it’s also the home of what’s quickly becoming one of the
region’s premier auction houses: Donley’s Auction Services.
This November 16th Donley Auction Fall Classic 300 was their biggest and best
sale to date, with consignments ranging from classic cars and choice period advertising to that amazing 19th century Soda Fountain & Drug Store interior.
And it was worth the trip just to see it. The circa-1890 Mt. Washington Drug Store
& Soda Fountain, originally located in Haverhill Massachusetts, boasted the most
elegant retail store fixtures of the day. The store remained operating and intact for
nearly one-hundred years. Upon closing, the interior was disassembled, sold, and
remained in storage for two decades. The lot included all four walls of the original
1890 cabinetry and soda fountain, two showcase top ice cream tables with swing out
stools, and a seven flavor marble soda fountain syrup dispenser made by Charles
Lippincott & Co. of Philadelphia.
And quite to my surprise, every piece was reassembled for the auction, filling an
entire outbuilding and manned by a uniformed soda jerk. I think the bidders for this
prize realized they’d probably never see another opportunity like this one, with the
eventual winner paying $170,000 for the group.
An exceptional collection of antique and vintage motor vehicles found ready buy-
Regina tabletop music box, heavily
carved oak case - $1,900.
ers too, with an early Harley-Davidson motorcycle leading the pack. The 1917
Harley amazingly was all-original with only minor paint touch-ups, having remained
under the ownership of one family for more than ninety years. In running condition
despite never having been restored, it roared off to the tune of $47,500.
Another unusual early vehicle was the winner among the motorcars, and it barely
qualified for that description. It was a 1907 Lindsey Dart Horseless Carriage. Typical
of the era, it looked more like a buggy than an automobile, and was powered by a
small two-cylinder air-cooled engine. This was one of only six existing examples of
the model known, was in running condition, and drove off for a solid $17,000.
There were countless other auction highlights, from a $12,000 1932 Buick Coupe
to a Seeburg Model KT Nickelodeon that made a cool $10,000. And if you missed
this sale, don’t worry - there are plenty of Donley Auction events coming up soon in
2014. First will be an auction of period military artifacts on January 12th, followed
by a sale of circus and sideshow memorabilia on February 8th and 9th. March brings
an offering of original cartoon art, and in April the Spring Classic 300. Just visit
www.donleyauctions.com for all the details.
And whether there’s an auction to attend or not, Donley’s Wild West Town is definitely worth the trip. During the summer season, the kids will love Wild West Town
itself, where they can be deputized and help round up the desperados. Or learn to
rope from a real cowboy - even witness a shootout in the town square. It’s geared
towards the pre-teen crowd, something founder Larry Donley insists will never
change. There’s also an outdoor Wild West stage show that’ll appeal to wanna-be
cowboys of all ages. And the South Union Roadhouse Restaurant (open year ‘round)
and world-class Old West and Antique phonograph museums ensure that the older
folks will have a great time too. Be sure to check out their Website www.wildwesttown.com, or give them a call at 815-923-9000. They’ll help you plan an old-fashioned day-trip for the whole family. And as always, keep an eye out for all of
Donley’s Auction Service’s events in the Auction Action Antique News!

Gone Wild for Manatee Gift Adoptions!
Adopting real Florida manatees for family and friends this Holiday season is natureinspired, thoughtful gift-giving that helps Save the Manatee Club increase conservation and education efforts for the endangered marine mammals and their aquatic
habitat. It also helps holiday shoppers stretch those often limited budgets.
Last year, Lisa Cartossa from Holt, Missouri, decided that since her two young
nieces, Lily and Rose from North Carolina, were fortunate enough to have most
everything they needed, she would adopt manatees as Christmas presents for them.
Lisa chose adoptees “Paddy Doyle” and “Flash,” who regularly winter at Blue
Spring State Park, from Save the Manatee Club’s Adopt-A-Manatee program. All of
the manatees available for adoption can be viewed on the Club’s website at
http://www.savethemanatee.org/adoptees.htm. Two new manatees recently added to
the list of adoptees are from Alabama, “Zewie” and “Bama.”
An annual manatee adoption costs $25, which is just a little over $2 a month, and
includes a color photo of a real manatee, an adoption certificate, biography, membership handbook, and subscriptions to the Club's newsletters which feature updated
reports on the manatees in the adoption program. Shipping is free within the United
States. Gift adoptions are sent with a personalized holiday message. Or for a $35
tax-deductible donation, each new member will also receive Save the Manatee
Club's 2012 wall calendar, featuring spectacular manatee photos to enjoy all year and
well past.
“When my nieces received their adoption packets for Christmas, I was told you could
not have heard two children screaming with excitement louder than they were,” said
Lisa. “Immediately, the manatees’ pictures went on their walls. They knew about

manatees, but Save the Manatee Club’s adoption program created this passion and
enthusiasm in them that’s very wonderful for me as an adult to be part of. I can’t tell
you how thrilled my nieces are to get the newsletter addressed personally to them.
They read every word front to back. Who knows, the Club may have just created the
next generation of marine life specialists dedicated to the conservation of these wonderful creatures.”
Save the Manatee Club, a national nonprofit organization, was co-founded thirty
years ago by singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett. Funds from the Holiday gift adoptions help with manatee rescue, rehabilitation, and release efforts; research; education and public awareness projects; conservation work to protect manatees and their
habitat; and for programs in the United States, Central and South America, the Wider
Caribbean, and West Africa. Manatees are listed as endangered at the state, federal,
and international levels.
Patrick Rose, aquatic biologist and Executive Director of the Club, points out that
manatees face tremendous challenges to their survival from human activities. “In
Florida alone, since record-keeping began in 1974, more than 38% of manatee deaths
where cause of death is known were human-related. So it is imperative that we continue to educate the public about the presence of manatees in our waters. Adopting
a manatee is a great way to learn more about this beloved species and how to help
make a difference in their lives.”
Find out more information about manatees and Holiday gift adoptions by contacting
Save the Manatee Club at 500 N. Maitland Ave., Maitland, FL 32751, or calling 1800-432-JOIN (5646), or visiting their web site at www.savethemanatee.org, where
you can also sign up for the Club’s free E-Newsletter. Also, discover a variety of
manatee items in the Club’s gift catalog at http://www.savethemanatee.org/shop/.

Turquoise Jewelry, Native American Beaded Items, Vintage Toys &
Furniture Among the Fantastic Finds at Connot Brothers Auction
Article & Photos by Connot Brothers Auction
With much of the family’s help, we spent hundreds of hours
packing trucks and trailers, unloading boxes, and doing it
all over again. There was anticipation from everyone to
see just how much stuff there was. When people
asked how much there was, we just told them, ‘you
wouldn’t believe it’. Sorting the items was a nonstop process. Our three buildings were packed
full. Items for the second day were organized
underneath the tables for ease of setup Saturday
night. Once the advertising was out, we had many
phone calls with questions on a variety of items.
By the time the sale days came, we were preBuffet $1,750.
pared to have two rings running at all times – and
that’s exactly what happened. We had a crew of
25 people to make it work. Saturday went just as planned – the main building sold
the glassware, lamps, and other collectables, and the secondary building sold the vintage clothing, hats, blankets and dolls. The sale lasted from 9 am to 6 pm. The second day went smooth as well, however, for a couple hours we had three auction rings
going at once – which is a new record for us! The second day was a full day also lasting from 10 am to 7 pm. The most exciting
moments came when we sold the turquoise jew-

elry, Native American beaded items, vintage toys and the
furniture. No one was day dreaming when those items
sold!
We were very privileged to have had the opportunity to sell such an amazing collection of items.
This sale brought buyers from near and far, as well
as many spectators to take-in this once in a lifetime event.
This auction was held at the Connot Brothers
Auction facility in Valentine, NE
on October 19th and
20th 2013.

Society for Old Ivory and Ohme Porcelains
Musical Box Society International
The Society for Old Ivory and Ohme Porcelains is an organization of collectors and
dealers who admire and collect Old Ivory and Ohme Porcelains. The purpose of the
Society is for the members to share information and educate themselves and the
public about the history and beauty of these porcelains, promote the collecting of
Old Ivory and Hermann Ohme porcelains, and to develop communications between
those who collect these porcelain items.
The Musical Box Society International is a non-profit organization dedicated to the
enjoyment, study and preservation of all automatic musical instruments. From its
modest beginning in 1949, MBSI now numbers several thousand members with representation in each of the 50 states and 19 other countries.
The SOIOP website is clean looking and traditional looking in keeping with the
character of the collecting area the Society represents. The homepage has representative photos of Old Ivory and Ohme porcelain pieces plus a side navigation bar.
There is a section on the history of Old Ivory and Ohme porcelains and some excellent segments with photos covering the types of porcelain, patterns and marks.
The site's sections on the Society, itself, and on their annual convention is almost
secondary. This is an excellent reference site for both collectors and dealers, or for
that person who just happens to own a piece of Old Ivory or Ohme porcelain and
wants to know a little more about it.
(from ACC News Service, Association of Collecting Clubs. Collectors.Org)
The MBSI website at www.mbsi.org is easy to navigate and understand. Visitors to
the site will find a great deal of helpful information about automatic musical instruments. There is a large museum section showing various museums and repositories
that have automatic musical instruments and a huge listing of manufacturers of
these instruments. We particularly enjoyed the Photo Gallery. Twenty-five musical
instruments are shown and by clicking on a button by each picture you can actually hear the automatic musical instrument playing. For members there is a large
library for borrowing related books and also a MBSI Store. The Society's chapters
are listed and an Events Calendar features the annual convention as well as chapter
events.
The section on how to become a member is easy to understand and complete.
Anyone visiting this site and spending some time here who has an interest in automatic musical instruments should end up at this section and join!

Top Of The Class Kicks It Up
The staff of Illinois State University's annual Top of the Class Antiques and
$275.02
Vintage Show has kicked up the production a few notches for this year. Not only will
the show have its full contingent of 42 quality antiques dealers, but they've added
[email protected]
some star power to this year's edition by featuring Paul Brown, owner of Atlanta's
Gallery 63 and star of Discovery Channel's Auction Kings.
Scheduled for January 31 and February 1-2, 2014, the show will feature 42
vendors from six mid-western states. Many customers have rated this show as “One
of the best in Illinois.” And, with the addition of Paul Brown, the show promises to
be more exciting than ever. Brown will be present on Saturday for appraisals, autograph signings, and discussions. Show co-manager Beverly Jennings said, “Paul is
a very energetic, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable antiques and vintage expert who
will add an exciting dimension to the show.” Auction Kings ran for a number of
years on Discovery Channel and the series is often re-shown on other cable channels.
Top of the Class also acknowledges the recent explosion of the vintage collecting world. While defining vintage and Mid-Century Modern can be challenging,
the show will offer a wide variety of antiques and items from the 1700s up to the
1950s. The accent will remain on top quality items with the dealers promising to
bring their “best of the best” to the show.
Madcat Antiques from Waterloo, Iowa, will be displaying toys as well as
political and advertising smalls dating from the 1800's up through the 1960's.
Country at Heart from Marseilles, IL and Blue Goose Antiques, Normal, IL will feature early American primitives including 1700's-1800's samplers, cabinets, bowls,
early pine furniture, and fine crockery. Annie's Antiks, Peoria, IL, will have a large
selection of quality advertising including signs along with lighting and furniture.
Circa of Milwaukee, Wisconsin will be bringing a wide collection of Mid-Century
Modern items including kitchen and decorating.
Dovetail Joint Antiques, Columbus, Ohio and Nigel Russell Antiques,
Missouri, will carry Royal Dolton character jugs, art glass, and figurines. A Touch
of Heaven, Chicago, features estate, fine, and costume jewelry. Others are bringing
American glass, art pottery, early porcelain, silver, buttons, marbles, and movie
memorabilia. Postcards will be abundant with at least three vendors showcasing
them.
The show is a benefit for the students of the School of Communication at
Illinois State University. Show hours are Friday, January 31, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.,
Saturday, February 1 from 10:00 to 5:00, and Sunday, February 2 from 10:00 to 4:00.
Admission is $5 and is valid for all three days.
The show will be held in the ballroom of the Bone Student Center, on the
ISU campus. Free parking is available in the faculty lot directly west of the student
center. Handicap parking is available in the circle drive next to the building. The
Bloomington/Normal community is in the center of Illinois, at the cross-roads of
Interstates 55 and 74.
For additional information, please visit the web site: www.topoftheclassantiques.com which offers driving directions, a list of vendors, and other show materials. You may also email [email protected] or phone 309-838-7080.

Arts Group Publishes Guide
to Northwest Wisconsin
Arts, Growers, Heritage
Written and submitted by Harriet Rice
In the small towns, villages and along the rustic roads of northwestern
Wisconsin are some of the state's most valuable assets: creative human beings who
nurture beauty, value nature and share their heritage through places, objects and edibles that are handmade and homegrown.
Now there's a brand hew paperback guidebook published by the
Wisconsin's Northwest Heritage Passage:: 208 pages that shine a light on these
places and people who live and work along and around the Highway 63 corridor in
13 northwest Wisconsin counties.
It's called The Wisconsin Passage: an Adventure in the Handmade,
Homegrown and Historical Offerings of Wisconsin from the Mississippi River to
the Lake Superior, or simply, The Wisconsin Passage. The book is the culmination
of a dream that began 12 years ago when a group of northwest Wisconsin people
like Spooner weaver Alene Peterson realized that the cottage industries of working
crafters, artists, growers were key to a sustainable “creative economy” in this
region.
Peterson and a committee of five - all volunteers -- began by establishing a
set of criteria. “We were looking for locally made or grown items, quality products,
interesting destinations, environmental responsibility, openness to the public, and
safety,” said Peterson.
Each of the 350 listees in the book submitted written descriptions of their
studios, galleries, farms, museums, and other arts, agricultures or culture-related
businesses. Committee members visited each site, providing feedback about their
experiences. Others collected and worked with submitted images or took photographs themselves.
Janet Krokson of Spooner was the book committee's muse who gathered the
descriptions, historical facts, anecdotes, and other materials, weaving them into a
narrative that makes the book an entertaining read as much as a travel guide.
Editor of the Spooner Advocate and life-long resident of the area, Krokson
said, “It was a labor of love. I've lived in Highway 63 communities for the past 31
years,” she said. “I love Wisconsin, and I particularly love this part of the state.”
She continued, “I think of The Wisconsin Passage as a passage to more passages - to bygone days, to an adventure that anyone can take part in. It's about artists,
artisans, performers, nature lovers, natural growers, pioneer settlers and storytellers of
many genres who forged a life and culture along the heritage roads and trails.”
Peterson added, “We want this book to bring the public together with artists
and growers where they live and work and showcase those hometowns, villages and
farms as well as the natural beauty of northwest Wisconsin destinations for travelers of all ages,”
The WNHP was founded in 1999 as an arts support group dedicated to supporting, showcasing and educating the public about the talents and creativity of
northwest Wisconsin's communities. In 2001, 2004 and 2009, WHNP published and
distributed more than 100,000 foldout maps listing handmade, homegrown and heritage sites. The Wisconsin Passage replaces those maps as a more permanent testament to the thriving creative economy in northwest Wisconsin.
There is no commercial advertising in the book. Production was funded by
memberships, in kind and cash donations from businesses and private citizens
through “Friends of the Passage.” Proceeds from sales of the book will be used to
update and publish future editions.
Following the initial book launch on August 27 at Northwind Book & Fiber
in Spooner, additional launches are planned in each of the 13 counties in the coming months. The Wisconsin Passage may be purchased at Northwind Book & Fiber,
205 Walnut Street, Spooner, and online at www.heritagepassage.com, where there
will be a list of other retail outlets selling the book. The WNHP is supported in part
by the Wisconsin Arts Board. For additional information, call 715.635.9303, or

Florida – The old saying that every season has a reason, seems to be spot on when
it comes to people looking to purchase antiques and collectibles. The Asheford Institute of
Antiques (AIA), a professional-level, distance learning program on
antiques and appraising, recently released the results of an in depth
survey it conducted on market trends in the antique business,
which it compiled from students and former graduates.
The primary focus of the survey was to gauge interest in
current trends of antiques and collectibles, based on sales and
requests for particular items. And while no measurable scientific
practices were employed, and the survey was informal in nature, the
results were still quite interesting, said the schools publications Director, Tony Drew. “What
we found was that there was a real generational shift in the marketplace, things that tended
to “trend” upwards in a truly noticeable fashion, were much more the domain of younger
buyers. Whereas items that seemed to have little or no Internet “buzz,” remained fairly stable in their position of relative interest to potential customers, and were more often purchased buy older buyers.” In other words, said Drew, “Younger consumers seemed to be
setting the trends as to what was hot and what was not – some what unusual occurrence in
the world of antiques.”
Don Kirpatrick, a 20-something dealer in the Northeast who participated in the
school survey, said that while he still looks at everything when attending auctions for inventory, he now concentrates more heavily on items like Art Deco, and early primitives. “My
clientele is primarily younger-hipster folks who want things from these periods, they’re not
looking for mid-Victorian pieces that are heavily decorated…” Staffers from the school who
conducted the survey said this was a common theme they found when asking about what
was selling. “Younger dealers had very different items and inventory when compared to
older dealers,” said Shirley Huey, one of the staffers who helped complete the survey, “Not
only were they different in inventory, but in their marketing approaches as well.”
Charles Green, current Director of the Institute, also noted that while 20 years ago
most antiques stores often had a “little bit of everything,” today’s dealers tend to concentrate on items based on generational interest. “I think what we’re finding, said Green, “is
that bricks and mortar antique businesses are beginning to be more representative of what
you see in online stores… a far greater degree of specialization is taking place, and the age
of both the dealer and the customer seems to have something to do with that.”
Green went on to stress that while the survey was by no means scientific, it still
pointed out interesting trends within the today’s antiques marketplace.
For readers seeking more information about the survey or the schools antiques and
appraisal course, they can be contacted at: (877) 444-4508 or visit their web site at; www.asheford.com. You can also write to them at; the Asheford Institute of Antiques 981 Harbor Blvd.,

Wisconsin Antiques
Dealers Association
40th Winter Antiques Show
in Waukesha, Wisconsin
to Benefit Grants & Scholarships
The Wisconsin Antiques Dealers Association, founded in 1948, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preservation & education within Wisconsin.
Funded by admissions charged at their
October and February antiques shows, their
Association awards scholarships and grants annually.
Waukesha County high school seniors recently submitted entries for the Wisconsin Antiques
Dealers Association's annual scholarship competition. Winners for the 2013-2014 school year will be
announced in January, 2014 and the awards will take
place at their 40th Winter Antiques Show, held
February 7 & 8, 2014, in Waukesha.
Wisconsin historical groups that received
WADA grants in 2013 are:
• The Friends of the Wisconsin Historical Society: WADA continues as the founding sponsor of FWHS's "30th Star Benefit Antiques Auction" to be held at Old
World Wisconsin April 26, 2014. Important funding provided by WADA was used
to restore a painting of Mrs. Conrad Seipp at Lake Geneva's 1888 Black Point
Estate, the summer retreat of Conrad Seipp, a wealthy Chicago brewer.
In an additional show of support, WADA is providing a free booth at their
February 7 & 8 Antiques Show to the Friends of the Wisconsin Historical Society
