As we enter a New Year I am proud to
say that Magnolia Manor ended 2010
stronger than we began the year. Our
financial statements for 2010 showed a
marked improvement over 2009 and our
skilled nursing centers continue to show
steady growth, continuing to recoup
some of the losses of the last two years.
But what I am most proud of at the
beginning of 2011 is not new at all.
I am most proud of our organization’s
continued commitment to care giving.
Many in the healthcare business have
not discovered the need to unite healthcare delivery with Christian compassion
in order to provide a holistic approach
in caring for the mind, body and spirit.
At Magnolia Manor, this holistic
approach is the heart of our mission.
As a healthcare provider for senior adults,
we are accountable to local, state and
federal governments for the care we give,
like all other healthcare systems. But
as a Christian organization, we are
also accountable to each other, families
of our residents, United Methodist
congregations and other donors, and
most importantly to God. So, care giving
has a more profound connotation for us.
Every day of the year, our staff lays
the foundation for providing care for
our residents. This includes ensuring
physical, social, and emotional needs
are met such as nutrition, assistance
with the functions of daily living,
medication management, therapy and
the life-enriching Renaissance Living
Program. Additional components of
resident care are unique to Magnolia
What I am most proud of
at the beginning
of 2011 is
our organization’s
continued commitment
to care giving.
Perhaps all healthcare providers have
a stated goal: to treat the patient or
resident with dignity and to deliver a
level of care that allows the patient or
resident to live the highest quality of life
possible. I am proud that Magnolia Manor
offers the many additional services to
ensure that our stated goal is achieved.

Manor. One of these additional
components is our Spiritual Care
Program. We now have six chaplains
providing pastoral care and challenging
programs for the spiritual benefit of
our residents. A second unique aspect
of Magnolia Manor’s approach to care
is The League of the Good Samaritan.
Through the League, we offer a promise
of security through financial assistance
to our most vulnerable residents. This
promise of security is made possible
by those generous donors who
support The League.

Releases Newest Book, Life With God to Benefit
The League Of The Good Samaritan
Magnolia Manor is pleased to
announce the release of Dr. W.
Aubrey Alsobrook’s newest book,
Life with God. Dr. Alsobrook is a
native of Georgia and has been a
member of the South Georgia
Annual Conference for seventy years.
He earned his bachelor’s and master’s
degrees in philosophy and divinity
from Emory University and his
doctorate from Drew University.
He has served pastorates across
South Georgia and served for five
years as the Superintendent of the
Waycross District.
Dr. Alsobrook’s newest book, Life
with God, is a collection of thirty-six
stimulating reflections on scripture
passages through the deep faith of
a loving pastor with many years of
experience. It is a wonderful devotional
guide for the beginning of the new
year. Most of all, this book is a loving
invitation for readers to participate
in life with God from one who has
walked his own long journey
close to God.
Dr. Alsobrook has dedicated his book
to his fellow residents of Magnolia
Manor, and all proceeds from the sale
of the book will go to The League of
the Good Samaritan, Magnolia
Manor’s compassionate assistance
program for residents. Because of
The League of the Good Samaritan,
Magnolia Manor has been able to
keep a vital promise to senior adults
for some forty-seven years: “No one
will ever have to leave the Manor due
to their inability to fully pay for the
cost of care.”
The cover of Dr. Alsobrook’s new
book is marked by an extended pair of
hands. In his writings, Aubrey reminds
the reader of the supportive hands of
God. In his generous designation of
book proceeds to the League, Aubrey
extends caring hands of love to his
fellow residents.
You may obtain a copy of Life With God
for $15 by contacting Diane Smith in the
Development Office at Magnolia Manor,
2001 South Lee Street, Americus, GA

There’s a new face in town
Andrea Walker, new Director
of Assisted Living at
Magnolia Manor in Macon.
AT T HE M AC O N C A M P U S
As fall came to Macon there were
many comings and goings at Magnolia
Manor, especially in the Assisted Living
area. Goodbyes were said to Kay Heard
as she joined her husband in retirement
and Andrea Walker was welcomed as
the new Director of Assisted Living.
Andrea is from Americus and
formerly worked as Director of Donor
Reba Jones Gates Assisted Living Building
Communications in the Magnolia
Manor Development Department on
the Americus campus.
Both she and her husband, Adam,
are excited about moving to the Middle
Georgia area and Andrea is looking
forward to getting to know the residents
of Magnolia Manor in Macon and the
Macon community at large.
Andrea Walker assists resident, Marie Willimas
Armchair Aerobics in the Assisted Living Center—one of the many programs in which Andrea hopes to encourage the
resident to participate.

the
John R. Batts
Annual Golf Classic
Macon, Georgia
On Friday, October 5, 2010 Magnolia
Manor of Macon once again held the
annual John R. Batts Golf Classic and
Mother Nature could not have been
kinder! The weather was beautiful and
everyone had a wonderful time. The
folks at Oakview Golf and Country
Club were just great, too.
Fourteen teams entered the
tournament, with two of those
being Memorial Teams. Longtime
friends of the late John R. Batts
entered a team in his memory. And a
team from Warner Robins First UMC
played in memory of Otto Warren, a
member of that church who was an
active supporter of the tournament
every year until his recent death.
John R. Batts Memorial Team with Mrs. Doris Batts
Over $6,000 was raised this year
and will be used to beautify the
Macon campus with new landscaping
and various other projects.
Special thanks go to all our
sponsors, players, committee
members and staff who worked
hard to make this day a success.

Fall Days are Fun Days
on Magnolia Manor Campuses…
from a Fall Festival in Buena Vista…
The entire Buena Vista community
turns out for the Magnolia Manor
Fall Festival. Residents, family
members and friends all enjoy
games, bounce equipment, and
good food and fellowship.

From A “Hoe-Down
Festival” at St. Marys…
Magnolia Manor residents in
St. Marys had an entire week of
events to choose from. There were
visits to a horse farm and a Black
Angus Cow farm. There were caramel
apples to make (and eat!), a bonfire
complete with cowboy stories, and an
exciting visit from a Saloon Dancer
(YeeHaw!). And for the perfect ending
to the week’s events, the local chapter
of Woodsmen of the World prepared
a BBQ dinner on Saturday night
for everyone.
With so many event planned,
there was something for everyone!
Decorations donated from the local
Methodist Church helped enhance
this week of fun in St. Marys. With
peanuts on the tables and cold
drinks in mason jars, everyone
looked forward to mealtime
during Hoe-down Week!

Magnolia Manor residents
have FUN in the Fall!
...from Sadie Hawkins Day in Richmond Hill
Resident Sandra Moore
Many U.S. high schools, especially
in the Midwest and South, hold
Sadie Hawkins Day dances. These
dances are characterized by girls
asking the boys for dates, and then
dressing up in matching farmer
clothes for the dance.
Resident James Wilbanks
...to an Orange
& Black Ball on
St. Simons Island
All across the South Georgia
Conference, residents and staff
members of Magnolia Manor really
enjoy the fall season of the year.
Each campus plans fun-filled events
for the residents, and many times staff
members and community participants
have just as much fun as the residents.
As you can see from these photographs, each celebration is as unique
as the people who live there.
8 Magnolia Manor | www.magnoliamanor.com
Magnolia Manor on the Coast held
their own Sadie Hawkins Day Celebration.
Residents came dressed in plaid shirts,
overalls, blue jeans and straw hats. They
line-danced to country classics, and
were served hot apple dumplings with
apple cider, making it the best oldfashioned Hoe-down in town!

Christmas At the Coast
Sweet Visitors at Richmond Hill
Troup 30019 of the Richmond Hill
Girl Scouts not only sprinkled their
Christmas spirit on each sugar cookie,
but also on the Magnolia Manor
residents by singing carols and giving
homemade cards.

Christmas Surprises and Firsts
at Magnolia Manor On the Coast
Jim and Marie Holtz arriving at
the Christmas Party.
Residents of Magnolia Manor on
the Coast received a holiday surprise
when Santa arrived by fire truck! He
was the star of the evening, bringing
goodies and mistletoe to each resident
and reading “Twas The Night Before
Christmas,” Magnolia Manor style.
Residents feasted on a delicious array
of appetizers while being entertained
by pianist Beth Haight and singer Jane
Walden with classic sing-a-longs.
This year’s Mr. and Mrs.
Christmas Spirit.
20 Magnolia Manor | www.magnoliamanor.com
The most memorable part of the
evening was the first annual crowning
of Mr & Ms. Christmas Spirit (pictured
at left.) Nominees were selected based
on their positive attitude, efforts to
spread joy to others and volunteerism.
The 2010 Nominees were: Sandra
Moore, Susie Cahill, Mity Cleghorn,
Velma Simmons, Carol Robinson,
Matthew Suddath, Glen Lindgren,
Bryon Marvin, Dan Gonzales
and Ed Cleghorn.
Magnolia Manor of Marion County’s
“Love Light Tree”
At Christmas time, Magnolia Manor
of Marion County lights up the
community with the “Love Light Tree,”
is a special fundraiser sponsored by the
nursing home’s Auxiliary. This year’s
proceeds will go to the Residents’ Fund.

Retirement Center in Americus is All Dressed Up for Christmas
As the Americus Campus got
“dressed” for Christmas, residents of
the Retirement Center participated in
a Door Decorating Contest. There were
many beautiful displays of handcrafted
wreaths, fancy and funny doors, and
family heirloom decorations.
The residents and their family
members enjoyed themselves and
the staff really appreciated a very
festive work place!
The Americus Campus got
“dressed up” for the holidays.

resident’s room.
Christmas Cards to Soldiers
On December 7th, residents came
out to honor the military men and
women by writing Christmas cards to
injured soldiers. In each card residents
shared their thoughts and prayers for
the soldiers and thanked them for their
brave service. Over three dozen cards
were sent to Walter Reed Army Medical
Center in Washington, D.C.

“LIGHT THE NIGHT” on St. Simons Island
This is a yearly event that everyone
enjoys! The entire campus is transformed
and as visitors walk through this
wonderland of lights, there are musical
groups performing and refreshments
are served.
The Clauses are bundled up
and ready to “LIGHT THE
NIGHT” on a very chilly
St. Simons Island Campus!
A beautifully lighted “Frosty” is prepared to

Good Samaritan
Angel Tree
Throughout the history of the world, God has used
angels to help us mortals and this year is no exception.
The League of the Good Samaritan “Angel Tree” is proof
of that. Angels ‘winged’ their way to Magnolia Manor
from all over the place! So many of you joined the ranks
of “Good Samaritan Angels” this year that our tree was
covered and we had to find other places to display them.
Magnolia Manor resident, Dr. Robert Waller, a proud
supporter of the Angel Tree.
Thank you for your gifts
of love and support!
The League of the Good Samaritan is such an important
part of our heritage here at Magnolia Manor. Being able
to keep the promise that “no resident will be asked to
leave because they cannot fully pay for the cost of their
care” is not easy in these times, but because of Angels
just like you, we can.
For your convenience, donate Online
to the League of the Good Samaritan.
