Copley Hospital is one of our region’s
treasures: a close-to-home medical center
that delivers warm, personal care and has been
recognized nationally as a HealthStrong hospital.
The surgical facilities are its working heart –
and Copley’s operating rooms were last updated
in 1979. Our superb surgical team delivers
top-quality outcomes, but they’re coping with
severely cramped spaces not suited for today’s
complex, technology-assisted procedures.

Lanny and I had never donated
to a hospital before, but a local
hospital is a critical resource to the
community. I recently spent eight
days as a patient at Copley – and I
learned first-hand that the doctors,
nurses, and staff care about their
patients, listen to our needs, and
do their very best to hasten our
recovery. Copley is a small hospital
that allows a very personal service.
Their positive, caring attitude
was vital to my recovery. We are
fortunate to have Copley Hospital

Retirement Funds
Donors who are 70.5 years or older may
choose to make a donation directly from their
retirement account, dependent on annual
federal regulations. You can also make Copley
Hospital a beneficiary of your IRA, another
Retirement Account, or through a Charitable

Announcing the
James and Mary Louise Carpenter
Surgical Center at Copley Hospital
We are proud to honor The Reverend Dr. James
Anderson Carpenter (1928-2013) and his wife,
Dr. Mary Louise Dunbar Carpenter (1928-2005),
by naming Copley’s new Surgical Center for
them. This commemorates their lives and their
love for our community.
The Carpenters became summer residents of
Greensboro in the mid-1960s with a camp on
Randolph Road. Many fondly remember Sunday
morning church services on Jim and Mary
Lou’s porch. Their extended family maintains
ties to Greensboro to this day.
Jim was an Episcopal priest and professor of
theology at General Theological Seminary in
New York City, where he founded and directed
The Center for Jewish-Christian Studies
and Relations. Mary Louise was a research
psychologist at the Bronx (NY) Psychiatric
Center and the Nathan S. Kline Institute for
Psychiatric Research in Orangeburg, NY.
The Board, Staff, and patients of Copley are
deeply grateful to the donors who have made
this transformative gift in loving memory of
the Carpenters.
