Introduction
1) Structure of laminate flooring
Laminate flooring constitutes of a family of products in its own right.
The planks of laminate flooring in the VISUAL, SOLID, FORTE, CLIP 400, SOUND COMFORT, CLIP 300, AMBIANCE
PRO, MEZZO, OSMOZE and ILLUSION (tiles) ranges are made up of a number of films (overlay, decor, balancer)
which are polymerised under pressure and by heating, directly onto the core, which is either a high-density
chipboard or a high-density fibre board (H.D.F.).

Instructions for laying as a Floating Floor
The guarantee applies to scrupulous adherence to the advice for laying the products and to statutory requirements
in force (eg Unified Technical Documents (DTU), Technical Sheets (Avis Technique)). The ALSAPLUS, ALSAPROTECT,
ALSAMOUSSE, ALSACOUSTIC, DENSIFOAM, FLOORISOL underlays form an integral part of these tried and tested
systems.
The VISUAL, SOLID, FORTE, CLIP 400, SOUND COMFORT, CLIP 300, AMBIANCE PRO, MEZZO, OSMOZE and ILLUSION
laminate floorings are for a floating floor installation in dry, indoor locations. They must not be screwed, pined or
glued on the floor.
1) Preparation of the sub-floor

Possible sub-floors
The following types of sub-floor are suitable for installation:
- concrete or screeding, with or without radiant heating;
- self-levelling anhydrite sub-floor, with or without radiant heating;
- wood floors or floors comprising wood-based panels (DTU 51.3).
The specific particulars for preparing sub-floors may be complemented in detail by application of the following
Unified Technical Documents (DTU):
- NF DTU 21 :
Carrying out concrete work
- NF DTU 26-2: Concrete and screeding with a water-based binder
- NF DTU 51-11: Floating parquet flooring
- NF DTU 51-3: Floors of wood or wood-based panels
- NF DTU 65-8: Heated floors (hot water)
- NF DTU 65-7: Heated floor with electrical system
The entire text of DTU can be downloaded on the CSTB website www.cstb.fr .

Sub-floor flatness
These above sub-floors must be flat, such that a 2-metre rule placed on any part of the floor should not reveal any
bumps or dents in excess of 5 mm, and a 20-centimetre ruler should not reveal any bumps or dents in excess of
1 mm. If this check reveals that the sub-floor is not sufficiently flat, either locally or generally, or sufficiently
smooth, rigid or hard, it may be necessary to carry out the following operations on wood floors or floors
comprising wood-based panels:
- flattening boards of flooring, planks and panels by screwing them down;
- sanding the joints between panels;
- sanding the nail heads.

Sub-floor humidity level
The sub-floor must not be likely to expose the flooring laid to any rising damp of any kind. Check the humidity level
of the sub-floor; this should not exceed 4,5% (at 4cm depth). In any case (including heated floor), an underlay
should be laid down under the laminate flooring to avoid any rising damp.
2) Storage and instructions of laying.
At least 48 hours before laying the floor, place the packs, closed and not directly on the existing floor, in the room
to be fitted, which should be at a temperature of between 12 and 30°C and a relative humidity level of between 40
and 65% RH to be maintained at least 3 days after laying.
We reserve us the possibility to change the production and information about the product in way to adapt it the laminate flooring to the legislations and the market.
6
EPI FLOORING DIVISION, ZI, 1 RUE DE L’EUROPE, 67521 MARLENHEIM CEDEX
Remove any existing skirting boards.
Place one board on the underlay(s) selected, against the door and lintel.
Trim to new level of floor if necessary.
Clean the sub-floor before laying the underlay(s), taking care to leave extra PE film all round up the walls.
3) Laying

Plank checking
Check each board carefully before and during laying. Faulty boards (visual defects), if any, should be rejected.

Choice of underlay
The VISUAL, SOLID, FORTE, CLIP 400, SOUND COMFORT, CLIP 300, AMBIANCE PRO, MEZZO, OSMOZE and ILLUSION
laminate floorings should be used with the following underlays:
- to limit any possible residual rising damp, these sub-floors should be covered by a 150µ sheet of ALSAPROTECT
film, with the strips overlapping by 20 cm, and leaving 3-5cm extra PE film all around the walls. When in the
presence of a wooden sub-floor it is advised to check if there is a proper and sufficient ventilation beneath (ie
cellar, cavity, etc.). It must be prepared using appropriate smoothing products according to the nature of the subfloor, using them in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
- for greater comfort when walking on the flooring and to level roughness of the sub-floor, we advise using the
ALSAMOUSSE underlay in conjunction with the ALSAPROTECT film.
ALSAPLUS is a combination from the 2 underlays.
The DENSIFOAM underlay offers a high resistance to compression.
Finally, ALSAMOUSSALU, is an underlay added with an aluminium protect of 20 µ destinate for the laying in humid
rooms.
- to meet the acoustic insulation requirements in blocks of flats, particularly the requirements of the NRA, a
resilient underlay resistant to compression is essential in conjunction with the ALSAPROTECT FILM: ALSACOUSTIC
∆Lw 21 bB ou ∆L 21 dB(A).
FLOORISOL, is an underlay composed by wood fiber, which is on of the most ecological foam.
The laying of FLOORISOL is different than for a normal underlay. Place always FLOORISOL in a 45° laying, in way
that no joint of the boards and of the FLOORISOL is in the same direction.
Important: ALSACOUSTIC and FLOORISOL are not compatible with sub-floor heating.

General points
The length of the boards should be parralel to the main source of light, tongue side along the wall.
Calculate the number of boards necessary lengthways and widthways. When cutting the boards, check that they
are at least 20 cm long and at least 5 cm wide. The boards are laid so that the joints (width) are staggered by at
least 30 cm. Each new row may be started using the leftover piece of the previous row, as long as the minimal
dimensions given above are respected.
It is essential to have an expansion gap of 8-10 mm between the boards and walls, doorways, piping, etc. This
space should be adjusted with wedges.
It is necessary to include expansion gaps in doorways or passageways, and for floors:
- exceeding 12 metres in length or 8 metres in width (for thickness of 7 and 8 mm)
- exceeding 12 metres in length or 12 metres in width (for thickness of 12).
Use a finishing profile to fill in the expansion gap.
We reserve us the possibility to change the production and information about the product in way to adapt it the laminate flooring to the legislations and the market.

4) Principle of laying with the Clip A system.
This principle of laying is only applicable for the ranges: VISUAL, SOLID, FORTE, CLIP 400, SOUND COMFORT, CLIP
300, OSMOZE et ILLUSION.
Tools :
- 1 pencil
- 1 2-metre aluminium rule
- 1 laying kit (made up of 20 or 40 spacers + 1 crowbar + 1 hammering block)
- 1 hammer
- 1 jigsaw, with fine serration
- 1 drill, for the passage of rounded obstacles (diameter < 20mm) through the laminate flooring
- 1 cutter, to cut off underlays
- 1 sellotape for underlays
The CLIP principle
This is a glueless laying system where the bottom lip of grooves along the boards is used as a guide. It is preferable
to lay the boards from left to right, with the tongue facing the wall.
Position each new board so that the tongue rests on the groove of the previous board, angle the board to engage
the tongue in the groove, then press forward and downward. To clip flat, position the board as before then engage
it by gently tapping gradually along the length of the board using the exclusive tapping block (included in our
installation kit).
Assembling the boards
- Place the first board a few centimetres away from the starting wall and against the wedges along the left-hand
wall. Lay down the first row tapping gradually each board using the tapping block.
- Start the second row using the leftover of the first row, fit it up against the shims on the left-hand wall and clip
it onto the first board. The leftover board has to measure more than 30 cm wide.
- Clip the third board onto the first row. Fit it onto the second board by tapping it gradually using the tapping
block.
- Complete each row alternately with full-length boards and the leftover board. If necessary, shift the outline of
the starting wall to include the extra width needed to prevent the last board being too narrow. Take apart, and cut
the boards for the first row to size.
- Fit each end board using the lever, and put wedges in place. Continue laying as described above.
- For the final row, place the last boards on the last row but one and trace the outline of the wall on the boards
with the help of an offcut. Trim to the outline, including the width of the wedges.
Once the boards are all laid, remove the wedges, fix the skirting boards and furnish the room.
We reserve us the possibility to change the production and information about the product in way to adapt it the laminate flooring to the legislations and the market.

the tongue in the groove, slide the board to the right (both short sides are now face to face) then press forward
and downward. To clip flat, press down the short side to fix both boards together.
Assembling the boards
- Place the first board a few centimetres away from the starting wall and against the wedges along the left-hand
wall. Lay down the first row sliding flat each board :
- Start the second row using the leftover of the first row, fit it up against the shims on the left-hand wall and clip
it onto the first board. The leftover board has to measure more than 30 cm wide.
- Clip the third board onto the first row. Fit it onto the second board by pressing down the short side.
- Complete each row alternately with full-length boards and the leftover board. If necessary, shift the outline of
the starting wall to include the extra width needed to prevent the last board being too narrow. Take apart, and cut

Instructions for laying on a sub-floor heating
1) Precautions
The thermal resistance of EPI laminate flooring allows its use on floors with low temperature heating where the
temperature does not exceed 28°C on the surface of the finished floor.
In addition to the advice on laying included in each pack and the advice given by the heating contractor, the
following points must be observed:
- sub-floors must be in accordance with DTU.
- it is essential to check humidity.
2) Conditions of laying
The thermal resistance of the underlay and laminate flooring assembly must not exceed < 0,13 m² K/W.
The ALSACOUSTIC and FLOORISOL underlays are not suitable for use with underfloor heating.
It should not be forgotten that the natural drying time of a new sub-floor (one and a half weeks per centimetre
thickness of concrete, and half as much again during damp weather) should be followed by a gradual start-up of
the heating system, carried out by the heating contractor, two weeks at least before the flooring is laid.
The heating stabilises the water content of the sub-floor corresponding to its future conditions of use and limits
the upward migration of water vapour when it is turned on once the flooring has been laid.
The heating is turned off two days before laying the floor and turned on again gradually after a three-day
stabilisation period once the flooring has been laid.
3) Fitting
It is essential to unroll the ALSAPROTECT 150 microns polyethylene film on the sub-floor with a minimum overlap
of 20 cm before laying the ALSAMOUSSE resilient underlay.
The cyclic start-up of the underfloor heating combined with variations in the relative humidity of the environment
causes laminate flooring to expand and contract.
It is essential that our advice for the tongues and grooves has been followed and that a proper expansion gap (8-10
mm minimum) has been respected around fixed elements: walls, partitions, pipes, posts and doorways.
We reserve us the possibility to change the production and information about the product in way to adapt it the laminate flooring to the legislations and the market.


ALSAPROTECT - PE film
Item code: 100 064
Description
The ALSAPROTECT underlay is a low-density 150 micron polyethylene film; it is intended to act as a damp proof
membrane. It is to be used for floating floors installation.
Fitting
The film should be laid over the entire sub-floor before the appropriate underlay – ALSAMOUSSE, ALSACOUSTIC or
ALSAPLUS or FLOORISOL – is laid.
An extra amount of the film (3-5 cm) should be raised up along the walls; this surplus is then cut off level with the
boards after the flooring has been laid. Lengths of the film should be overlapped by at least 20 cm and held
together with adhesive tape.
IMPORTANT
As recommended in DTU 51-11, where the underlying surface, whether it is new or old, contains hydraulic or
anhydrous binders, on ground floors or in upstairs rooms, whether or not the floor has integrated heating.
The ALSAPROTECT film should not be used on a wooden floor or on an underlying surface with a PVC floor covering
in upstairs rooms. If the underlying surface is in contact with the outside, it is necessary to check the under-floor
ventilation.

ALSAPLUS - Underlay PE protection
Item code : 102 439
Description
ALSAPLUS is a dual-purpose underlay made of polyethylene incompressible with a double function. .
A film 150 microns thick, designed to substantially limit the passage of humidity, is combined with a foam layer
2 mm thick. This makes the floor comfortable to walk on and smoothes over any unevenness in the underlying
surface and offers a thermal isolation.
There is an adhesive strip on the 10-cm overhang at the edge of the film; this is to ensure that there is no
interruption of the vapour barrier function between strips of film.
ALSAPLUS is intended for use with laminated floor covering or parquet flooring laid as a floating floor. Its use is
compulsory (DTU 51-11) where the underlying surface, whether it is new or old, contains hydraulic or anhydrous
binders, on ground floors or in upstairs rooms, whether or not the floor has integrated heating. It should only be
used on a wooden floor if this is above a cold surface.
Fitting
Unroll ALSAPLUS parallel to the direction of laying the laminated floor covering boards or strips of parquet, placing
the side with the film in contact with the underlying surface and the overhanging edge opposite the starting wall.
The subsequent strips are then positioned with the edges of the foam abutting each other, so that the overhanging
edge is covered. The strips are held in place by removing the backing of the adhesive strip.

Use and Care
1) Precautions
Rubber or felt pads should be fitted to the underside of the legs of chairs and other furniture. This will also make
the furniture easier to move.
Chairs on castor wheels should have W-type soft wheels intended for hard floors (to EN 12529:1998, 5.4.4.2);
these are recognisable by their two colours.
In normal use, entries from the outside should be fitted with a door mat to retain grit and dampness brought in on
shoes.
EPI flooring has a waterproof surface wear layer made of thermosetting aminoplast resins with a level of gloss and
surface structure determined during production; this should not be altered by adding any other product such as
wax, polish or varnish.
EPI flooring should never be sanded.
2) Cleaning
For ordinary cleaning, use a vacuum cleaner or a broom.
If more thorough cleaning is necessary, we recommend using a slightly damp floorcloth, well wrung out, with or
without an ordinary non-abrasive cleaning product.
To remove stubborn marks such as paint, rubber, shoe scuff-marks or glue, it is possible to use window-cleaning
products, white spirit, acetone or similar products. These products should be used sparingly, particularly near
joints and cleaned with a slightly damp floorcloth.
Wet cleaning is not recommended. Any accidental spills of water should be wiped up immediately.
Rinsing with clean water and wiping dry will avoid traces of limemarks and enable the room to be used again
quicker.
Cleaning should be adapted according to the type of premises and the density of use.
IMPORTANT :
For the cleaning of the bevel-edges do never use a cutting objects.
Do not steam clean as it will damage the floorings.
3) Replacing a board
For EPI laminate flooring, we recommend dismantling the boards until the faulty part is reached, replacing the
board and re-assembling the flooring immediately.
We reserve us the possibility to change the production and information about the product in way to adapt it the laminate flooring to the legislations and the market.
