2003 Donor Report - Chestnut Hill College
ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2002-2003 “ We can be proud that our mission, values and traditions remain intact–ready for a new generation of students to enjoy the bounty of a holistic education. MY DEAR FRIENDS AND BENEFACTORS OF CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE: While each period in our history has provided astonishing moments and lasting memories, this academic year of 2002-03 has been one that will be remembered for generations to come. That is because Chestnut Hill College has undergone the momentous change from a single-gender institution to a coeducational one. After several years of declining enrollment within the College and increased competition from the academic community, the decision was made in order to meet the challenges of higher education in the 21st century. Given the College’s impressive history, the decision was a difficult one, but it was done to keep our institution vital by expanding our reach and our ability to provide a strong, faith-based education to a larger audience. After dutiful preparation and thoughtful planning, Chestnut Hill College’s transition to a coeducational institution has been a successful one. This preparation was multifaceted and thorough, as we learned from the successes and failures of several schools that had previously undergone this challenging transition. As a result, we adopted a new Chestnut Hill College brand position in our marketing and outreach materials. This new, updated brand is one that is modern and compelling in its look, informative and engaging in voice, and consistent with our newly created brand positioning statement, which is: Chestnut Hill College is a dynamic institution that is evolving to provide students of all ages with quality educational and spiritual experiences. In addition to the new look and feel in our marketing materials, our campus also began to adopt a subtle new look through physical plant improvements. Among these improvements were new furniture in the residence halls and Dining Room, as well as the addition of a new Fitness Center. ” Through adjustments to the curriculum and class structure, as well as changes in marketing and physical plant, we put the College in a position to succeed in attracting an entirely new audience of students, and I am proud to report that we have thrived. Enrollment figures have exceeded our expectations, as applications rose 67% during this academic year. Amazingly, through our dedicated effort and willingness to embrace new frontiers, 29% of our full-time applicants were males. As a result of these impressive figures, we can be proud that our mission, values and traditions remain intact–ready for a new generation of students to enjoy the bounty of a holistic education. On behalf of the College Community, I want to extend our deepest gratitude for the multiple ways that alumnae/i, friends, benefactors and foundations have made these successes possible. I thank you for your belief in Chestnut Hill College, which you have deemed worthy of your support, and I pledge my fullest effort to ensure that we continue to meet your expectations. And while we will continue to meet the daunting challenge of becoming a coeducational college, many other daily, weekly and yearly challenges exist. It is through the support of friends such as you who believe in our mission that we can continue to meet new obstacles. I hope that the Annual Report that you are about to enjoy provides proof that we are accomplishing wonderful things every day at Chestnut Hill College, and also provides the inspiration for you to join in our achievements. Gratefully, Sister Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D. President 1 THE MISSION OF CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH HOLISTIC EDUCATION IN AN INCLUSIVE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY MARKED BY ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, SHARED RESPONSIBILITY, PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH, SERVICE TO ONE ANOTHER AND TO THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY, AND CONCERN FOR THE EARTH. DEFINING A DEFINING YEAR This Annual Report focuses on the 2002-03 academic year, which was a pivotal time in the history of Chestnut Hill College. A new era began, as the College focused a tremendous amount of time and energy on the transition of Chestnut Hill College into a coeducational institution. Yet as we plan to meet the challenges of the future, we will be sure to not lose sight of our traditions and our mission. As a result, the Chestnut Hill College experience will now benefit a new and expanded student body. Chestnut Hill College, founded by the Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1924, is an independent, Catholic, institution that fosters equality through education. Faithful to its strong liberal arts tradition, Chestnut Hill College offers academic programs of excellence in the areas of undergraduate, graduate, and continuing studies. SUCCESSFUL BRANDING CAMPAIGN True to its Catholic heritage, Chestnut Hill College espouses the beliefs and values inherent in the Judeo-Christian tradition while it respects the contributions made by other faith traditions in the development of the whole person. The College nurtures a sense of integrity, spirituality, and social justice in all. The College community dedicates itself to four purposes in fulfilling this mission. It seeks: • • • • to provide avenues for students to achieve academic excellence and to pursue research in their major field or in interdisciplinary studies. The College encourages students to explore and experience diverse curricula and to participate in exchange programs with other institutions of higher education. to initiate links between the world of learning and the world of work through curricular planning, technological opportunities, and career preparation. The College guides students in applying theoretical learning through experiential education designed collaboratively by faculty and students. to uphold an atmosphere of communal respect in which all may clarify and articulate personal values and beliefs while exploring the ethical and moral dimensions underlying all relationships. The College encourages inter-faith opportunities by acquainting all students with Catholicism, its theology and its Judeo-Christian roots, and by engaging in dialogue with women and men of other beliefs. to create local and global connections that enable students to respond to the needs of others through service-oriented enterprises. The College educates students to identify and to address issues of social justice and to work toward systemic change. Approved by the Chestnut Hill College Board of Directors, October 7, 2002 2 ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR 2003 ENROLLMENT & ENTHUSIASM ON THE RISE The College’s bold transition to a coeducational institution paid off in terms of recruitment. Recordbreaking attendance at Open Houses was an early sign that the future indeed was bright for attracting new students. Enrollment figures exceeded our expectations, as applications rose 67% during this academic year. Marketing efforts were reflective of the transition, and student responses and enthusiasm indicated that the marketing efforts were well received. INCREASED MEDIA COVERAGE 3 A NEW ERA BRINGS NAME CHANGES MAJORS OVERHAUL As part of our ongoing commitment to offering a quality education, the College conducted a review of the curriculum and academic offerings. The Chestnut Hill College Board of Directors approved the creation of a new major: International Business, Language and Culture. This interdisciplinary major allows students to excel in international business, as well as foreign language and culture. Another new major, English and Communications, includes both literary analysis and an emphasis on professional organization, speaking and writing. This major provides students with the rich cultural communication skills necessary in today’s job market. To reflect the transition to a coeducational institution, Chestnut Hill College’s three schools were renamed. Most prominently, the College for Women became the School of Undergraduate Studies. Additionally, the other two schools were renamed the School of Graduate Studies and the School of Continuing Studies. These new names are another step we have taken to ready ourselves for the influx of new students. NEW HIRES MIDDLE STATES ACCREDITATION 4 We are proud to announce that Chestnut Hill College has received full re-accreditation by the Commission on Colleges of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA), the regional accrediting association authorized by the U.S. Congress. By being accredited, our students’ degrees are based on high professional standards that are focused on student learning outcomes; further, the conferred degrees are accepted by Graduate and Professional Schools. In early 2003, Chestnut Hill College submitted a comprehensive SelfStudy report with an emphasis on enrollment management. In April, a team of evaluators visited Chestnut Hill for three days. During that time, they met with members of the Board of Directors, Administrators, faculty, students and staff. The Team Report was evaluated by the Commission on Colleges; that body voted to reaffirm Chestnut Hill College’s accreditation in late June 2003. Mr. Russert entertained the crowd with an inspiring speech to the graduating class. Centering on a theme of giving back and the value of a college education, Mr. Russert’s speech was engaging and dynamic. Commencement opened with a touching tribute to the College for Women. Members of the graduating class carried 79 roses representing the 79 years of success as a women’s college. Commencement concluded with two members of the incoming Class of 2007, Keren AbbottFrederick and Daniel Burke, carrying a book of the College’s history with blank pages symbolizing the future yet to be written. Thus the ceremony recognized the achievements of our past, even as it looked to our promising future. As a tax-exempt organization, the College is able to sell the shares without paying tax. THE FUTURE OF CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE Though the College has entered a new era, it remains vitally important that we build upon the success of our long-standing traditions. One of those traditions is providing financial support of the College; we are a school that succeeds because of the generosity of our alumnae/i and friends. The College has been proactive in defining the challenges ahead. With your help, we will meet these challenges as we continue to provide a faith-based, holistic education to new generations of students. YOU CAN HELP SUPPORT THE FUTURE OF CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROVIDING SUPPORT The needs of a private college in today’s world are many. As a small institution dedicated to teaching, Chestnut Hill College is largely tuition driven. Although tuition for undergraduates at Chestnut Hill College currently exceeds $18,000, it provides only 60 percent of the real cost of educating a student. To maintain its tradition of excellence in education, Chestnut Hill College seeks to make up the difference 12 through contributions. The College receives no financial assistance from the Catholic Church or the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and funding from state or federal agencies is given only for specific projects or programs. Contributions from alumnae/i, parents and other friends to any of the funds listed below are investments in the College’s future and help assure that a Chestnut Hill College education will be available for future generations. ANNUAL FUND To supplement the operating budget, the College seeks contributions each year from alumnae/i, parents and other friends. These gifts are used to help with general expenses, providing assistance with everything from library acquisitions and faculty salaries to utilities and instructional supplies. Because this fund is critical to day-to-day operations, the College stresses its importance to all donors, asking that they continue to support the Annual Fund in addition to any other areas of specific interest. REUNION GIVING FUND Every five years, as they celebrate the anniversary of their graduation, classes are asked to consider undertaking a special fund-raising effort. Some have selected specific physical plant projects, such as renovation of the alcoves in St. Joseph Hall or restoration of the Rotunda. Others have elected to establish a scholarship fund or underwrite landscaping needs. These special projects have helped the College with the extraordinary expenses of maintaining a large, historic, aging physical plant and providing financial assistance for deserving students. ENDOWMENT FUND Contributions to the institution’s endowment are invested and only the income is used each year. Donors have chosen to invest in the College’s future by endowing scholarships, lecture series, and other specially designed programs. CAPITAL GIFT INITIATIVE This effort, launched in 1997, seeks funds for several specific renovation and construction projects. The projects were identified through a careful analysis of the campus as part of a Site and Facilities Master Plan and have been determined by the Board of Directors to be essential to the College’s future growth. CHARITABLE GIFT OPTIONS Chestnut Hill College is a taxexempt charity, acknowledged by the Internal Revenue Service as rating a 501-C-(3) status. All contributions to Chestnut Hill College are fully tax deductible and may be given using any of the following methods: OUTRIGHT GIFTS • Gifts of cash may be given for any purpose. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Chestnut Hill College. Funds may also be transferred directly to the College’s account via wire transfer. • Gifts of appreciated marketable securities may be transferred to Chestnut Hill College for any purpose. Securities may be given via electronic transfer or by re-registering the shares in the name of Chestnut Hill College and mailing the certificates to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. To avoid paying capital gains tax, the donor For specific information about electronic transfers, please contact Lorraine Aurely, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, at 215.248.7103 or email [email protected]. LIFE INCOME GIFTS Life income gifts may be funded through outright contributions or pledges of a variety of assets, including those mentioned above. Life income options also include: • Charitable remainder trust separately managed trust funds that provide income to the donor for life. These may be established as annuity trusts, which provide a fixed amount of income, or as unitrusts, which provide income based upon a percentage of trust assets. • Charitable gift annuity - a type of insurance contract that provides a fixed income. • Deferred gift annuity - like a charitable gift annuity, a deferred annuity is a type of insurance contract that provides a fixed income. With this method, however, a donor contributes currently but does not begin receiving income until a later date. BEQUESTS Donors may choose to include Chestnut Hill College, Philadelphia, PA, as a beneficiary in their wills. The College may be named as the recipient of a specific amount or be designated to receive a percentage of the donor’s estate. Donors may indicate a specific use for the funds or designate that they are unrestricted. MATCHING GIFTS Those donors who are employed or whose spouses are employed by companies with matching gift programs can provide additional support for Chestnut Hill College by designating the College as the recipient of matching funds. To learn whether your contributions may be eligible, contact your company’s personnel office or write to the Office of Institutional Advancement at the College. TRIBUTE FUND Donors can support Chestnut Hill College by honoring or memorializing a special person or event. Tribute cards are sent advising the designated individual(s) of the gift but not the amount. Forms are available from the Office of Institutional Advancement; please call 215.248.7105. CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE GRANTS (NOT ENDOWED) FULL-TUITION AWARDS For a full-tuition Chestnut Hill College grant, a donation of $80,000 is needed. This covers tuition and fees for one student for four years. At the end of four years, the money will have been fully dispersed in tuition grants and administrative expenses. Chestnut Hill College reserves the right to choose the recipient and to award the grant. Donors may pledge to pay in increments of $20,000 per year for four years. PARTIAL-TUITION AWARDS For a partial-tuition Chestnut Hill College grant, a minimum donation of $10,000 is needed. This covers partial tuition and fees for one student for four years. At the end of four years, the money will have been fully dispersed in tuition grants and administrative expenses. Chestnut Hill College reserves the right to choose the recipient and to award the grant. Donors may pledge to pay over a period of four years. MATCHING GIFTS POLICIES Chestnut Hill College welcomes matching gifts and encourages donors or their spouses who work for matching gift companies to apply for such donations. In administering matching gifts, the College follows national guidelines. Designation of matching gift funds is determined by each matching gift company. Funds are used for the same purpose as the employee’s gift when received from corporations that so stipulate. For funds received from corporations that designate the match as unrestricted, the purpose is determined by the College. Recognition of matching gifts is determined as follows: The match is the gift of the corporation. Companies are recognized in a special section of the Annual Report. The names of individuals who obtain matching gifts are listed in the Annual Report and annotated to show that the College was designated to receive a match. The amount of the matching gift is not used to determine the individual’s level of support; membership in gift clubs is determined only from the amount contributed directly by the individual donor. 13 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT I RECEIVE VARIOUS APPEALS FROM THE COLLEGE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR ASKING FOR DONATIONS. AT TIMES,THIS CAN BE VERY CONFUSING. ARE THESE REQUESTS ALL FOR THE SAME PURPOSE? PLEASE EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE FUNDS. It’s understandable that there might be some confusion around these various requests for donations. The College needs support for many programs. Here is a brief explanation of these different funds and how your contributions are used: • ANNUAL FUND Just as there are certain basic needs within a family budget, the College’s budget handles day-today general expenses, providing assistance with everything from library acquisitions to instructional supplies to faculty salaries. Because student tuition covers only about 60% of the cost of a Chestnut Hill education, the College seeks your help each year to supplement ever-increasing costs. Whatever the amount, your gift to the Annual Fund goes to work immediately to respond to these growing needs. • CAPITAL GIFTS INITIATIVE This exciting and ambitious program seeks funds in stages for specific renovation and building projects on campus. Generous donations to Phase I of this program assisted in the construction of Barbara D’Iorio Martino Hall, completed in October 2000, and other improvements to the physical plant. Your response to future 14 GIFTS AND GRANTS – JULY1, 2002 – JUNE 30, 2003 ANNUAL FUND/ UNRESTRICTED requests for pledges and contributions will help begin other campus improvements, including the restoration of the student dining area, new electrical distribution in Fournier Hall, classroom and dormitory renovations and the addition of a fitness center. The improvements are all designed to improve academic and campus life for Chestnut Hill students. • REUNION GIVING FUND Because reunion is a special time for remembrance of years spent at Chestnut Hill, reunion classes that are celebrating fifth-year anniversaries are asked to do something important for the College and its students by making an extra gift to Chestnut Hill to support different projects. The specific purpose changes each year, depending upon the College’s needs and the interests of the reunion classes. IF I WISH TO CONTRIBUTE TO VARIOUS FUNDS, DO I HAVE TO WRITE SEPARATE CHECKS FOR EACH ONE? IS IT POSSIBLE TO WRITE JUST ONE CHECK FOR ALL MY DONATIONS? Yes, you may combine your contributions and write just one check, payable to Chestnut Hill College. But to assure that your donations go to the funds you are supporting, the College asks that you write the specific amount and purpose on the check memo line or include that same information in a letter. This way, your gift will be distributed precisely as you intended. WHEN THE COLLEGE ASKS FOR DONATIONS, I ALWAYS HEAR ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF INCREASING THE “PERCENT OF PARTICIPATION” OF ALUMS. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN, AND WHY IS THIS NUMBER SO CRUCIAL? Giving to your alma mater sends an important message to other potential contributors. And that message is, “I believe in Chestnut Hill College and its future!” Because every gift you give represents a vote of confidence in Chestnut Hill, the total percentage of graduates and friends who give to the College is a critical statistic. It says to foundations and corporations who monitor this information, “If Chestnut Hill alums believe enough in their College to give financial support, perhaps we should seriously consider funding some of its worthwhile efforts.” Institutions with low levels of support from graduates are less likely to receive support from foundations, corporations and government agencies.
