Be the Best... 68 Polish shoes Soldiers’ boots are so shiny you can you can see your reflection in them. You too can buff your boots (or shoes) to a glorious gloss: What you’ll need: Yesterday’s newspaper, two clean cloths, one shoebrush, one toothbrush, some boot polish, a pair of scruffy shoes or boots. 1 Preparation Before you even open the polish make sure you cover your carpet with an old newspaper, and remove the laces from your shoes so you can get to those hard-to-reach areas. With one of the clean cloths, give the shoes a thorough wipe to remove any dust or dirt. 2 Polish Wrap a corner of the same cloth around the first two fingers of one hand (holding the rest of the cloth tight in your palm) and apply THE ARMY 300 page book of tips and hints Creative input 76 a small amount of polish to the toe of one shoe. Work your way all the way round to the heal, rubbing the polish in a circular motion – known in the Army as ‘bulling’. Make sure you pay particular attention to the nooks and crannies between any stitching. Once you have finished one shoe place it on the newspaper and do the second shoe. 3 Perfection If you have time, leave the shoes somewhere cool for up to 10 minutes – they will get shinier as the polish sinks in and sets. Then, using a rigorous back-and-forth motion, buff each shoe with a polishing brush to bring up the shine and remove any excess polish. Use a similar technique with the toothbrush to get between the seams and stitching. Finally, buff the shoes with the second clean cloth to give them a real shine. Did you know? Soldiers will spend two to three hours cleaning their boots for inspection. Pick head lice Monkeys pick them out and eat them. While you’ll want to keep your head pest-free, you may not want to go quite that far. n Head lice and their eggs (nits) can affect anyone. They are easiest to remove if you have short hair. n Soak your hair in conditioner or salad oil. Using a fine-toothed nit comb, comb one section of your hair several times, passing close to the scalp. Dip the comb in soapy water and remove debris from it with a tissue. Make sure the comb is clean before combing again. n Work steadily across the scalp. Shampoo the hair thoroughly to remove the oil. Comb the dry hair and check for any surviving lice. n Repeat this treatment if the problem persists, washing bedding and clothes at 140°F to get rid of any lingering eggs or lice. *Also see tips XX and XX Be the Best... 81 Designed 150 articles to appear in this ‘Ultimate guide to surviving modern life’. How to land a plane While it may be the safest way to travel statistically, flying is not without its hazards. Like… what happens if the pilot passes out? How do you land the thing in an emergency? Here goes: 1 Don’t panic. The only time the pilot really does anything is on take-off and landing. So take your place at the controls, and try to relax. You need to be calm to pull this off. 2 Place your hands on the control column in front of you. Pushing it forward puts you into a dive, pulling back makes you climb. For now, keep it centred. 3 Put the headset on and make contact with the ground. After all, you don’t want to get shot down, and these guys are the only ones who can talk you down. 4 Locate the altitude and airspeed indicators on the dashboard. You want to maintain your speed and height. The throttles will be the big sliding levers in the centre console. 5 Using the compass and the directions from air-traffic control, steer the plane on to the bearing supplied, which will hopefully line you up with an airfield. 6 Drop the undercarriage. If possible, get the ground staff to confirm this. 7 Decrease your airspeed by easing the throttle backward and extending the flaps. 8 Don’t aim the nose of the aircraft down. Try to ‘float’ it down with the rear touching down first. 9 Slam on the brakes as soon as all wheels are on the ground. 10 Ask the stewardess for a bottle of champagne. You’re a hero. *Also see tips XX and XX Be the Best... 94 98 Purify water Travel light OK, you’ve found water (see tip ??). To be sure natural water is fit to drink you need to filter it then boil it. Alternatively you can distil it. Here’s how: Anyone can get around the world six times with a giant backpack, but the secret to travelling REALLY light is meticulous, ruthless planning. Filtering A filter will remove the worst impurities from water. Use coffee filter papers, kitchen towels or a piece of cloth with a fine weave. Pour the water through your filter several times. Filtering does not remove bacteria and micro-organisms. You will need to boil the water to kill them. Boiling Boil water to kill bacteria and micro-organisms. Boiling for ten minutes kills almost everything and it is not possible to kill more by boiling longer. Distilling If the weather is sunny dig a pit one-foot deep in the ground and put a container in the centre. Cover the pit with a sheet of plastic weighted around the edges. Put a stone in the centre of the plastic to weigh it down. The sun’s heat will draw water out of the ground. The water will condense on the underside of the plastic and drip into the container. This water is fit to drink. Little things add up, so don’t let yourself get away with anything. If you’re aiming to travel with just a small backpack or suitcase, bulk is likely to be just as troublesome as weight, so it’s vital to minimise the amount of air you’re carrying around. Iron all clothes for ultimate flatness, and take the smallest toiletries bag you can find. Most essential bathroom items are available in extra-small sizes for travellers nowadays. Take a sealable plastic bag for storing food and drink – you’ll be glad you did if something leaks. Once you’re on the road, don’t stuff your dirty clothes into the nearest available corner – keep them in a separate compartment, packed as flat as possible. And don’t bother picking up souvenirs – a compact digital camera will store all the memories you need. *Also see tips XX and XX OREGON SCIENTIFIC Packaging guidelines Creative input Working with the Creative Director, the creative design for Oregon Scientific Packaging was established. Ian Shortman, Director, TMA Marketing. “I have used Andy a few times on a freelance basis and every time he has slotted in perfectly. With the pace that the advertising industry moves at it’s really important that freelancers can pick a project up and run with it, which Andy does brilliantly. He has a keen eye for detail, and has an excellent creative input. Andy is always at the top of the list if I require extra support. Chris Green, Project Manager, VCCP Blue. I worked with Andy for 5 years on the Sony account. I instantly struck a rapport with him. He has the ability to deliver fresh and inspirational creative, at the same time working within the client’s guidelines, brief and often tight deadlines. I have since learnt this isn’t always the case with creatives! I had no hesitation in using Andy in a freelance capacity when I moved on to another agency. I would highly recommend Andy to anyone considering employing him. Dawn Nottley, Group Account Director, MI Marketing. Thank you for taking the time to look through this résumé.
