NNADAP Request for Proposal (RFP) Update
Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 Nechi Institute received
news, from Health Canada First Nations and Inuit
Health, Alberta Region, that our bid to secure the
National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program
(NNADAP) funding to deliver Alberta NNADAP
employees addictions counselor training, had not
been successful.
http://www.nechi.com
What does this mean?
This means that Nechi will no longer hold an allotted
amount of seats for NNADAP funded students.

Off-Site Training Making Miles: Inuvik Community Wellness Certificate
Linda Pedersen
Land of the midnight sun, huh!
Wrong! It was cold, blistery and
dark when we got off the
airplane in Inuvik at 3:30 pm,
greeted by a temperature of -30,
with a wind that chilled you to
the very core of your being. To
top this off, I arrived in Inuvik
wearing clothes appropriate for
Edmonton - a flimsy shawl, no
gloves; certainly not dressed for
winter. Brrr… Yet, in spite of all
this, I was totally impressed with
the way in which people had
adapted to this darkly beautiful
area of Canada.
At the airport we were
welcomed by Peggy Day, the
Aboriginal Healing foundation
Coordinator, who was the main
contact and coordinator for the
Community Wellness Training.
Peggy gathered the trainer and
me and drove us through Inuvik
(population 3000), pointing out
some of the impressive buildings
and sharing the historical
background of the community.
The Nechi/Keyano Community
Wellness Certificate program
consists of ten weeks of training
focusing on health promotion,
prevention and community
development. We were now into
our third week of training and
the students were impressed
with the enhanced knowledge
and skills they are acquiring.
Peggy …drove us
through Inuvik …
pointing out …
buildings and sharing a
historical background of
the community.

New Student Computer Lab Open for Business!
This year, the computer laboratory was improved
by the addition of new hardware and software.
Twenty state-of-the-art thin-client workstations
were added. These workstations connect to a
centralized terminal server. In addition to the
central server, a separate server-grade machine
provides back-office services, network services, and
redundant file storage.
Twenty state-of-the-art thin-client
workstations were added.

The Computer Laboratory is used by Nechi staff
and students for independent learning activities, for
conducting research, and for blended learning
activities. Blended learning is a mix of traditional
face-to-face instruction, peer-learning and computer
mediated instruction.
