INTRODUCTION
In 2 0 1 4 , the Po t aw at o m i Zo o embarked on the development of a s tr ateg ic m a s t e r p la n t o c re a t e a lo n g -t e rm v i s i o n fo r t h e fu t u re o f t h e Zo o. T h e Zo o e n g a g e d Zo o Ad v i s or s a n d
G L M V Archit ect ure, Inc. t o conduct a multi- phas e project, which took pla c e d u ri n g t h e p a s t ye a r a n d i n c lu d e d a n a s s e s s m e n t o f t h e s i t e a n d fa c i li t i e s , a n e x p lo ra t i on of op p or t u n i t i e s ,
a n d a ref inem ent o f prio rit ies . The planning team included repres entative s fro m Zo o le a d e rs h i p, t h e B o a rd a n d s t a ff m e m b e rs .

PROJECT BACKGROUND
T he t e a m par ticipat ed in a pro ces s that worked to
e n ha n c e t he overall guest ex peri ence, improve the
si t e a n d facilit ies, address guest circulation and flow,
a dd re ve n ue generatio n o ppo r t unities , s treng then the
Zo o’s s t a t ure in its educatio nal mis s ion, and pos ition
t h e Zo o a s a co m m unit y asset and reg ional attr action.
T hro ug ho ut t he pro cess t he t eam reached out to the
st a ff a n d Bo ard as well as leader s in the community
a n d g ove r n m ent t o gat her input and feedback into
t h e di re c t io n f o r t he Zo o. Master planning activities
i n c l ude d a tho ro ugh revie w o f site and facilities , as
we l l a s a d jacent land, and num erous des ig n works hops
w i t h ke y B o ard and staf f ; and concluded with creating
c o n c e p t s fo r excit ing ne w exhibits and flow that make
b e s t use o f t he Zo o’s site, it s environs , and its place in
t h e p a rk.
T he Zo o is at a critical po int in its evolution. It
ha s s uc c e ssf ully t ransit io ned to pr ivate non- profit
m a n a g e m e nt , and ne w leadership is in place in many
p o si t i o n s t hro ugho ut t he Zo o. Over the las t s ever al
ye a r s , t h e Zo o has enjoyed growing attendance, increas ed
re ve n ue , and additio ns t o its ani mal collection.
In o rde r t o co nt inue t his po sitive momentum and
ha r n e ss t he energy and excit em ent around the Zoo, a
c o m p e l l i ng visio n f o r t he f ut ure needs to be put for ward.
T hi s s t r a t egic m ast er plan do es j us t that, lay ing out a
se r i e s o f facility and exhibit im provements which will
t r a n s f o r m the Zo o , establishing it as a premier reg ional
p l a ye r i n the zo o industr y and making it a mus t- s ee
de st i n a t i o n.
The g oal now i s t o a t t ra c t a b ro a d e r a n d d i ve rs e a u d i e n c e
from throug h o u t t h e a re a , e n g a g i n g a n d i m m e rs i n g

des tination, t h e Zo o m u s t a ls o s t a y t r u e t o i t s m i s s i o n ,
creating opp o r t u n i t i e s t o li ve i t s c o n s e r va t i o n a n d
education pu rp o s e w i t h o n -s i t e p ro g ra m m i n g , fa c i li t i e s
for s pecies s u r v i va l, a n d e d u c a t i o n a l fa c i li t i e s t h a t a re
acces s ible an d a va i la b le t o t h o s e i n t h e c o m m u n i t y.

T he Po taw ato m i Zo o currently occupies 23 acres of
Ci t y - owned pro per ty in Po tawatomi Park located in
So ut h Bend, Indiana.
T he Zoo is nest led bet ween t he St. Jos eph River

t h i s p l an is interactio n thro ug h animal feeding oppor tunities .

A s a n i m al co nt act rest rictio ns increas e, s o has the g ues ts’ need for meanin g fu l
i n t e r a c tio n. Feeding is an ideal activity to create a memor able, up clos e an d p e rs o n a l
e x p e r i e nce. T his plan ex plo res a var iety of feeding oppor tunities as well as fe e d i n g
a n d e n r ichm ent dem o nst rations by s taff.
Im m e diately inside t he ent r y, the peng uin exhibit playfully welcomes g uest s t o
t h e i r fi r st f eeding and enrichment demons tr ation. A fe w s teps down the p a t h i s t h e
Chi l dren’s Zo o f illed w ith f ar my ard animals anxious ly awaiting a s nack or fri e n d ly p a t
o n t h e back . T he Big Back Yard offer s plenty of excitement with lor ikeet f e e d i n g s a n d
a Ka n g aro o /Wallaby w alk -t hroug h. Gir affe to the left... okapi to the r ig ht . . . e ve r yo n e
