In this, the sixteenth year of Coastal Currents, we have taken the opportunity to programme the most ambitious festival yet. Following on from last year’s highly successful collaboration between Creative Coast, Sweet & Dandy and Home Live Art, the same Coastal Currents team has worked together once again on an exciting and diverse programme for 2015. Over two weeks and three weekends, Coastal Currents will present a selection of works in unusual and unexpected places. Focusing on what the festival does best of all, we have concentrated on “the outdoors” and programmed a host of free and accessible pieces for everyone to enjoy. Seafront sculptures, ladies in red, a lesson in boredom, a trick on the eye and a film premiere in Priory Meadow Shopping Centre are just some of the highlights to look out for. Hastings Borough Council is proud to support this well loved arts festival in this, it’s 16th year. To continue in the vein of last year’s successes, Coastal Currents will commission even more work especially for the town and its residents to enjoy. We welcome Tod Hanson as Artist in Residence for a whole 6 weeks prior to the festival. We know the people of Hastings & St Leonards will make his stay thoroughly enjoyable. In addition, we can look forward to world renowned Spanish street artist Isaac Cordal who will visit to make us a set of sculptures all of our very own. We are honoured to have such prestigious artists making work for the town and we urge you to visit these free, accessible and unique installations. Join artist Amy Sharrocks in her mass sea “fall”, as well as a whole host of other events including Clod Ensembles’ Red Ladies and the inimitable Hunt & Darton. There will still be the usual high quality selection of Open Studios as well as a host of events. So thanks to everyone for taking such an active part in this celebration of Hastings & St Leonards’ creativity and to the team who have run this festival successfully on our behalf for the last nine years. Focusing on what the festival does best, we have looked to make all our curated projects as accessible as possible, bringing as much art and performance outdoors while celebrating all that is Hastings & St Leonards. Street artist Isaac Cordal has been asked to respond to the town, by creating a set of his ‘Cement Eclipses’ - miniature sculptures hidden along our seafront. Lastly, we have invited artist Tod Hanson to live and work in Hastings for six weeks to create a very special piece for the town, responding to the intricate Durbar Hall at Hastings Museum and transforming the space. All these exhibitions, events and performances can be enjoyed free of charge so we hope you’ll all get involved! 6 coastalcurrents.org.uk Fri 4 September Film at Baker Mamonova (p22) Sat 5 September Red Ladies (p16) Plus Red Ladies are on their way! This year’s Coastal Currents launch moves away from the theatrical stage to the outdoors, celebrating a distinctive space that physically joins together Hastings and St Leonards. We want to challenge your perceptions of another familiar and well-loved location, one so often missed but still surprising and amazing its visitors. ZEROH will transform this space into a subterranean art installation to launch Coastal Currents Arts Festival 2015. Bottle Alley Hastings is a unique site, revolutionary in its concept and half a mile long, in part made from recycled materials, built to provide a unique underground promenading experience. A series of simple repeating pillars, exactly spaced, frame the outside world, giving a sense of rhythm as you walk through the space, forming a vanishing point of perception, disappearing in both directions into a futurist vortex. Embracing the current state of decay and celebrating the unrivalled geometric splendour of simple lines and form that frame the horizon of the sea, this work will collaborate with local artists to transform the space. More details will be revealed at www.zeroh.net and www.coastalcurrents.org.uk We hope you’ll join us, ZEROH and the Coastal Currents team. The Coastal Currents AFTER PARTY starts from 8pm at The Observer Building, 52 Cambridge Road, Hastings, TN34 1EL 8 coastalcurrents.org.uk Coastal Currents 2015 9 Tod Hanson - GEO New Commission for Coastal Currents Festival Private View - Wed 9 September at 6pm Arrive early - first 150 will receive free welcome drink Opens to the public 10 September until 4 October Tue to Sat: 10am - 5pm Sun: 12noon - 5pm Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, Johns Place, Bohemia Road, Hastings, TN34 1ET www.hmag.org.uk Coastal Currents have invited Hanson to create a new commission, responding to the town’s beloved Durbar Hall at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery. Artist Tod Hanson makes striking large-scale public art and gallery installations with a particular focus on the decorative arts, architecture, infrastructure and technology. Hanson explores themes of industrialisation, consumerism, celebration and delirium. A world over-amplified and speeding up. For the festival, Hanson will be hand-painting an elaborate floor piece inside Hastings Museum, re-working elements found in the richly ornate Durbar Hall and combining with items and themes from the collection, sending them into a dizzy visual spin. This artwork will transform the room and create an immersive visual arts experience that can be observed from the many viewpoints that make up this unique space. www.todhanson.com 10 coastalcurrents.org.uk Coastal Currents 2015 11 Isaac Cordal New Commission for Coastal Currents Festival Fri 28 August - permanent installation Hastings Seafront - Rock-a-Nore Internationally acclaimed Spanish street artist Isaac Cordal has been commissioned to create a set of permanent pieces as part of his Cement Eclipses series especially for Hastings seafront. Cement Eclipses are a critical examination of our behavior as a social mass. These tiny cement works of art, often at the height of the sole of passers by, contemplate the demolition and reconstruction of everything around us. They draw our attention to the absurdity of our existence. Cordal’s miniature sculptures explore themes of climate change, scepticism with authority, anonymity and the drudgery of modern life, placed amongst urban streets to criticise contemporary society. With the simple act of miniaturisation and thoughtful placement, Isaac Cordal magically expands the imagination of pedestrians who stumble across his sculptures on the street. Isaac Cordal is sympathetic toward his little people and you can empathise with their situations, their leisure time and even their more tragic moments. The sculptures can usually be found in gutters, on top of buildings, on top of bus shelters and in many unusual and unlikely places. http://cementeclipses.com 12 coastalcurrents.org.uk Coastal Currents 2015 13 Need bigger image. AMY SHARROCKS WATERWORKS DAYTRIP Mon 31 August, 3pm Sat 29 – Mon 31 August Meet outside the Stade Hall For the opening weekend of Coastal Currents, we have invited Amy Sharrocks to bring Museum of Water to the festival and make a radical live artwork DAYTRIP on our coast. Join us for a mass fall into the waters of Hastings. For three days you are invited to think about water. Discover people’s stories of water, bring your own water that is precious to you, fall, crash and splash into water… become part of something big. © Ruth Corney MUSEUM OF WATER Sat 29 August 12noon - 8pm Sun 30 August 11am - 6pm Mon 31 August 11am - 6pm © Amy Sharrocks Black Winkle Studio Opposite Fishermen’s Museum, Rock-a-Nore Road, Hastings, TN34 3DW Museum of Water is a collection of publicly donated water and accompanying stories. It’s an invitation to ponder our most precious liquid and how we use it. Do you swim in pools? Do you splash in puddles? Do you drink from a tap? Come along and explore the existing collection, and make your own donation to the Museum. Choose some water that is precious to you. Find a bottle to put it in. Tell us why you chose this water. We will keep it for you. There are many falls: falling asleep, economic slumps and crashes, falls from grace, or just a general difficulty keeping up. Children teach us that falling is a human condition, but somehow we forget that as we grow UP… As Europe monitors the dangers of dipping our toes in the water, we will come together to explore the possibilities of our trips and stumbles, manage a different set of risks, and investigate the lure of the sea. What are the health risks of staying on the shore? This is a rare chance to plunge into the sea together and share a group fall. Please bring a towel. Hot drinks for everyone afterwards. In celebration of our ready access to fresh water in the UK, running alongside the Museum is Water Bar, the UK’s first free pop-up bar serving only tap water. And you will stay there until you summon the energy to put one foot in front of the other.” Iain Sinclair - Edge of the Orison By Our Selves Dir- Andrew Kötting with Iain Sinclair 2015. 80 mins Kino-Teatr, Baker-Mamonova Gallery, Norman Rd, St Leonards on Sea, TN38 0EQ Fri 4 September 7.30 start Introduced by Andrew Kötting and Iain Sinclair. By Our Selves documents a fourday walk made by the English Poet John Clare. Toby Jones, Iain Sinclair and a Straw Bear follow in his footsteps exactly 150 years after his death. On route they bump into MacGillivray, Dr Simon Kovesi and the wizard Alan Moore. The journey is narrated by Toby’s father Freddie, a maverick actor who featured in numerous David Lynch films. John Clare’s escape from Epping Forest, an epic march through hunger and madness, is an English journey to set beside ‘A Pilgrim’s Progress’. Andrew Kötting, hyperkinetic campervan captain of Gallivant, sets out in hot pursuit, dressed as a Straw Bear. Father and son, Freddie and Toby Jones, are possessed by the spirit of Clare, and locked in Beckettian embrace: one allvoice and one all-mute. The writer Iain Sinclair watches from the shadows, Alan Moore waits like a bearded figure of fate in Northampton and Dr Simon Kovesi hands out the medicine. Captured in lustrous black and white photography, they discover the only truth of the 22 coastalcurrents.org.uk road: whatever our hopes and delusions, we are always By Our Selves. Important - Although free, tickets are limited and need reserving by visiting www. coastalcurrents.org.uk/film Alcina Pale Shadows Dir- Nichola Bruce and Sam Sharples 2014. 56 Mins Priory Meadow Shopping Centre, Queens Road, TN34 1PH Sat 12 September 8pm Introduction by Director and Barefoot Opera. Coastal Currents are proud to present the premiere screening of this new film by Hastings based film makers Nichola Bruce and Sam Sharples with Barefoot Opera. Pale Shadows is told through the eyes of a young storyteller. She reveals the story of Bradamante who travels to a magical island to reclaim her lost lover Ruggeiro from the enchantress Alcina. This is a rich visionary approach to Handel’s opera Alcina, which explores the intrigue and turmoil of love. Set against a contemporary world, it features some of Handel’s most moving arias. The feature film Pale Shadows is an experimental approach to Handel’s opera Alcina, which was filmed over three days in Hastings, England with Barefoot Opera’s ensemble of singers and musicians. This is a standing event, if you wish to sit down, please bring a cushion or folding chair. Free, all welcome, just turn up.
