Fall 2016 Fall 2016 The Afterschool Enrichment Programs at Browne Academy are designed to provide a variety of enriching activities to engage the minds and bodies of our students. These programs take place after school starting at 3:15pm. Below you will find a schedule of classes offered. In class, the words, “I CAN’T” are not allowed. “I’LL TRY” is emphasized, and when they TRY they find out that they CAN. In this screen-focused culture, Master Nat works to make sure his students are physically fit. Tae Kwon Do will help to improve flexibility, strength, and coordination, qualities that carry over to other sports students may participate in. Learning new techniques and achieving higher goals builds self-confidence. Students will be sent home with information on how to purchase a uniform. Classes are offered Fall, Winter and Spring Trimesters. All students enrolled in classes during the Spring Trimester will participate in a belt ceremony and skill demonstration for parents and other guests. Master Nat has been teaching Tae Kwon do at Browne Academy for over 15 years. He has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Northern Shaolin Kung Fu. He has also trained in Muay Thai, grappling, Judo, and wrestling. Nat is a Virginia State Champion in Tae Kwon Do Forms and Board Breaking, 3rd in sparring and placed in the top 10 of the U.S. Wushu/Kung Fu team trials in 2003. Each week, our young students will warm-up their voice and body as well as learn choreography, play educational acting games, learn about storytelling, and sing. Parents are welcome to join us for the last 15-minutes of our last class to see what their children have been learning! Small Hands, BIG Art PS 3s & 4s Thursdays 3:15 - 4:15pm $250 for 8 classes Click to Return to Home Page Dates: Sept. 15, 22, 29, Oct. 6, 13, 27, Nov. 3, 10 We’ve revved up our class structure to include a variety of ARTrageous Art forms that are sure to tickle your creative side! We love getting messy together and are excited to tackle our FUNtastic projects with you this fall! How about some Fired Arts like pottery painting & fused glass?! Followed by some cool mixed media projects, far out water color and mad Mosaics?! For inspiration, we’ll take a peek at works by some of the Great Masters and incorporate their techniques in our projects. We expect you to stamp your artistic thumbprint on everything we do, naturally, so we won’t be copying their work. It’s all about YOU! So, come to class each Thursday with your creative hats on tight! You’re going to have the hottest home Art gallery in the neighborhood! All color products/tools used are non-toxic & safe for the smallest hands. Ms. Val’s program is centered on the fired arts -- that is, kiln fired pottery & glass projects -but, she sometimes adds other mixed media Art forms such as mosaics & canvas painting, to stir things up. Artistic freedom is important to Ms. Val, so she always encourages students to imprint their personal style on each project. Each lesson is taught by professional, enthusiastic, high-energy coaches. Our curriculum includes a progression of skills and character development through simple, ageappropriate themes. Lessons include new skills, goals-scoring, scrimmage time, character word and a fun prize! No need to send in a soccer ball, cleats or shin guards. We provide everything you need to play! For nearly 15 years, Soccer Shots has been introducing soccer exclusively to children ages 3 to 5. Using creative and imaginative games, weekly sessions focus on basic soccer skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting. We also highlight a positive character trait each session such as respect, teamwork, and appreciation. Soccer Shots will expose your child to the fun of soccer and provide the foundation needed to get started in the sport. We move beyond the average after school art class, inspiring kids to think for themselves, to invent and expand on new ideas and perspectives, gaining confidence, ability and empathy in the process. Art Brains kids creatively problem-solve with our thoughtful projects considering themes of science, history, anthropology, nature, story-telling and magic! They always experiment with a variety of materials, and will draw, paint, sculpt, build, write, and more in a single session. Join us this Fall and activate your *art brains*. Students will: draw detailed maps of imaginary lands, sculpt ice cream sundaes from the past and future for our ice cream time machine, build interactive dream theaters, draw charts of invented constellations to be projected with light, assemble hybrid creatures, collaborate to make a haunted house video, and more! Students will enjoy the various types of movement as a strength and confidence builder. Children practice poise, rhythm, motor skills, agility, and coordination. Catchy combinations will be explored. We will touch upon the BASTE (Body, Action, Space, Time, & Energy) Elements of movement and exploration. Each session will feel like a fun creative movement party! Ms. ElChehabi has over 20 years of dance experience in tap, jazz, and ballet; (even a little acro). She has been assisting and teaching dance classes for more than 13 years. Ms. E is also a licensed Zumba fitness instructor and has taught Zumba, Zumba Gold, and ZumbAtomic to all ages in various fitness settings. Keeping active, she loves to take unique classes (Barre, P90X, HIIT, yoga, pilates, etc) and learn new techniques to maintain physical fitness. Classes are designed around activities, drills and limited instructions to encourage initiative and creativity among players. Each class ends with a soccer game to reinforce the topics covered and to help understand the 3-dimensional and tactical aspects of the game. Focus is on ball touch basics for all parts of the feet. Players also develop positive fitness habits as well as perseverance and sportsmanship. *Players will need to bring a size 4 soccer ball labeled and sneakers. Shin guards are optional. Christophe Poyac is Browne Academy’s 4-8th grade french teacher. His love of soccer is something he is eager to share with his students. Along with coaching soccer at school,Christophe has been coaching travel soccer for 5 years, and currently holds the U.S. National D license. [email protected] Apprentice Engineers: Robotics, Grades 3-5 Wednesdays 3:15 - 4:15pm $195 for classes Click to Return to Home Page Dates: Sep 14, 21, 28, Oct 5, 12, 19, 26, Nov 2, 9 The LEGO® Robotics: Rescue Robots curriculum is designed to introduce students to the world of not only building, but also programming basic robots. Throughout this course the students will explore different ways in which a robot could be utilized to respond in disaster situations. Engineering for Kids comes from the mind of educator Dori Roberts. With an extensive educational background in math and technology education, Roberts taught engineering at the high school level for 11 years. During her teaching career, she saw a dire need for math, science and engineering programs. To fill this void, she started an afterschool club that participated in various engineering and science-based competitions. [email protected] Lacrosse, Girls Grades 1 - 4 Thursdays 3:15 - 4:15pm $170 for 8 classes Click to Return to Home Page Dates: Sept. 15, 22, 29, Oct. 6, 13, 27, Nov. 3, 10 This weekly introductory lacrosse clinic is for beginners and players with experience. The clinic will focus on the fundamentals of the game, with primary focus on stick skills. Skills worked on and developed: Ground balls, defense, positioning, passing, stick skills. Girls need to provide their own lacrosse stick, ball, mouth guard, and goggles. Robyn Laha, a Browne Academy teacher since 2006, has taught second and fourth grades and currently teaches third grade in the Lower School. Ms. Laha also has been on the Zero Gravity “Vomit Comet” and worked to get her private pilot’s license. She has a vibrant daughter who has attended Browne Academy since preschool 3s. As a parent and a teacher, Ms. Laha loves the Browne Academy’s supportive community and has seen her daughter thrive in the environment. When not at school, Ms. Laha enjoys spending time with family, running, reading, and cooking. Our play-based curriculum is designed to teach functional language through hands-on activities, art projects, and songs. The online Student Center and accompanying activity book details key vocabulary and provides parents the opportunity to follow along with their child’s progress at home.” This unique opportunity will be taught over the entire school year so students have the opportunity to more fully learn the language. The online Student Center has many useful tools to give you a better understanding of what your child is learning and how you can supplement this learning at home. Apply the rules of Olympic fencing and you have a physically challenging game of strategy also known as “physical chess”. Fencing Sports Academy has provided a family-friendly setting for beginner level to world class fencers. Keeping the competitive nature of the sport in mind, we provide an environment that encourages the development of, appreciation for, and dedication to the sport. The many layers of equipment a fencer wears and the rules of fencing provide a safe setting. The physical benefits of fencing are an increase in agility, balance, and coordination. The mental benefits are improved focus, strategy and confidence. Students should wear a T-shirt and pants or shorts(no jeans), and tennis shoes. Fencing Sports Academy (FSA) is the premier fencing club in the Washington, DC area. We offer competitive and recreational training for children to veterans, novices to world champions. Our instructors will contact you to set a schedule. Beth Hansen: Piano Beth is beginning her ninth year teaching private piano lessons as part of the Afterschool Enrichment Program at Browne Academy. Mrs. Hansen first came to Browne in 2005 as a volunteer in the Development Office and later taught math in the Middle School. Mrs. Hansen was a math major and music minor in organ performance at Allegheny College where she studied piano, organ, and voice. She continued her organ study at the University of Illinois while earning her Master’s in Education. Mrs. Hansen believes that learning to play the piano is of benefit to everyone, regardless of their musical goals. Her teaching philosophy is to take students from where they are to where they can go. All are welcome! [email protected] Ms. Brittany Brandt: Voice, Violin, Piano, Ukulele, French Horn, Viola, Cello, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Flute and Clarinet Brittany has been teaching private music lessons since 2006. She graduated from West Chester University with a degree in music education. This is her 3rd year teaching at Browne! In addition to teaching general music, choir and handbells at Browne she also performs with a band called The Embry Group as a singer / songwriter. She plays nearly every instrument and loves introducing that passion and desire for music in her students! Ms. Danielle Brosious: Piano, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, Guitar, Ukulele, Violin, Viola, Cello Danielle recently moved to Alexandria from Philadelphia where she had been teaching and performing for over ten years. She earned both a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor of Music Performance from West Chester University in 2009 and returned in 2014 for her Master of Music on full scholarship. Additionally, in 2015 she received the Swope Foundation Scholarship for her work in bringing musical opportunities to local children.
