Upon entering the town core of Cave
Creek, you realize that you haven’t
really experienced the authentic
Arizona until now. We call it “Route
CC” in honor of old route 66 which is so
famous for its nostalgic communities
throughout the West.
Established as a gold mining town and
stopping point for the U.S. Cavalry
in the mid 1870s, Cave Creek has
preserved its wild west character like
no other. While most of the buildings
built in the 1800s are probably gone,
many that are standing have been there
longer than anyone can remember and
are reminiscent of what things looked

like in the wild west so long ago.
Located high above Phoenix in the
foothills of Black Mountain, Skull
Mesa and Elephant Butte, Cave Creek
features several saloons, western
shops, rodeo events, galleries and live
music. Throw in some championship
golf, several unique southwest jewelry
shops and home décor stores, as well
as numerous other specialty stores and
you have a must-visit location--just
minutes, but a time warp away, from
nearby Phoenix and Scottsdale.

hat good is visiting a western
town without learning how to look
like a native? Although not everyone
living here dresses in a western
style everyday, there are definitely
some important components you’ll
want to include when putting
together your own perfect look.
According to Paul Rerich, owner of
Cave Creek Cowboy Company, the
shirt is one of the most important
elements of the western style. Shirts
can feature snaps or buttons, and most
have an emphasis on outlined stitching.
Banded collars are also very common.
Rerich is also quick to point out
that cowboy boots can really make
almost any outfit become western
immediately because the western
boot is so recognizable. Like any
footwear, there are styles that are
great for everyday use and others that
are great for a more dressed up look.
When fit properly, boots can provide
a lifetime of use and enjoyment.

Hats are another item that can
instantly transform your look to
western. Most cowboy hats are
made of either felt or straw but
there are some leather hats as well.
The key to looking good in a
cowboy hat is to make sure you get
fit with more than just the size of
your head. You also have to take
into account your shoulder size,
hair length and basic face shape.
Another popular clothing item is
the long coat, many with feathers

or western details. These dusters
are an essential part of any western
wardrobe according to Rerich.
Some other important items for
any western outfit include belts
(and buckles), jeans, vests, jackets,
and dusters. For more information
on western wear, be sure to visit
Paul at his Cave Creek Store.

ave Creek is a great place to shop
and is certainly like no other. You can
stroll around and visit any one of the
area’s many galleries or seek out many
of the town’s unique shops featuring
southwestern gifts, clothing, furniture
and housewares. Some distinctive
stand-alone stores include The Town
Dump, Valerie’s, Big Bronco, Indian
Village and Cave Creek Cigars. Many
have large assortments of pottery,
rustic antiques and other unique items
that can only be found in Cave Creek.
In fact, the town doesn’t have a single
national chain store. Every shop is
individually owned and operated
making shopping in Cave Creek truly
unique.
There are a number of rustic little
shopping clusters throughout town
such as Frontier Town, Las Tiendas,
Rancho Mañana and Stagecoach
Village. Each offers a variety of
restaurants, galleries, and curious little
shops located within a convenient
stroll of one another.
Popular shops include both Suzanne’s
Hot Stuff which features the areas best
selection of hot sauces, while other
unique stores include Cave Creek
Candles & Gifts which is also located in
Frontier Town, and the Indian Market,
which features the finest in Indian
jewelry, art, and crafts and is located
in the Stagecoach village shopping
complex.
The Gold Mine Thrift Shop offers a
variety of gently used items. The Pink
Cadillac offers everything hip and cool
for those looking for the latest trends
in fashion.

here is a certain eclectic nature to
the architecture that really reflects the
personality of the Cave Creek area.
You can find interesting stories at
just about any of the old buildings in
town. Many have walls adorned with
photos of the many celebrities who
have visited over the years – some
signed, some not. It doesn’t really
matter; people of all backgrounds
just seem to blend in together at
any of the town’s establishments.
Harold’s has hundreds of such photos,
including many governors, sports
figures and Hollywood celebrities, as
well as all the regular folks just having
a good time. Kurt Russell showed up
a few years ago at Rancho Manana’s
Golf Oasis for a breakfast burrito.

Sometimes
it’s
the
buildings
themselves that are famous. Big Earl’s
Greasy Eats was used as a location
for the Hollywood film “Jolene” a
few years ago. The old gas station –
now a hip burger joint – probably
doesn’t look much different than it
did in the 1930s when it was originally
erected from an oil company kit
and filled its first thirsty tank of gas.

Big Bronco’s home for the past eleven
years was one of Cave Creek’s original
automotive repair shops many decades
ago. Now the complex, complete with
three separate buildings, looks like it is
straight out of an episode of Gun Smoke.
Many of the original buildings from
the Rancho Mañana Dude Ranch of
the 1940s are still used
today and house the
cozy Rancho Mañana
golf shop and famous
Tonto Bar and Grill.
Plenty of celebrities have eaten
there including Hugh Downs, Phil
Mickelson, and Clint Eastwood.
So remember to bring a camera
when visiting Cave Creek; you
may not see a celebrity, but you’ll
definitely feel like part of the past.

Rancho Mañana Golf Club is consistently rated among the best in the state
and country by golfers, even after more than 25 years. It is a perfect blend of
the past and present, sitting on the site of the Rancho Mañana Dude Ranch
which started operations in the 1940s. Several of the original buildings are
still used today including the golf shop, Tonto Bar & Grill, and several offices.
Whether

Many of the galleries are owned and
operated by the artists themselves
such as Sergio Ladron De Guevara
- Fine Art.
His work includes
inspiration from France, Italy,
Mexico and the Southwestern U.S.
Others feature hand selected pieces
from several artists in several genres
that give visitors an eclectic view
of the Cave Creek world of art.
Still other artists have private working
studios throughout town but always
welcome guests when calls are made
in advance. Dick Mueller’s Coyote
Crossing Studio, and Linda Budge’s
Studio, are great examples. They
love showing off their work and
always participate in the Sonoran
Arts League’s Hidden in the Hills
Studio Tour each November.
With so many galleries in the
Cave Creek area to tour and visit,
you may want to make a day of it!

t’s amazing how artistically talented
people often seem to congregate
in some areas. They feed off of one

themselves to even higher levels.
From the obvious southwestern

to

art can be found throughout town.

n his hillside studio overlooking the
Grapevine Wash, Dick Mueller sees an
abundance of wildlife. While viewing
wildlife is fairly common in a town
like Cave Creek, it is Mueller’s ability
to transpose what he sees into such
detail with a pencil that is so amazing
or, as the artist himself puts it, “Art
with details that are only possible with
a pencil – details that create work that
looks photographic. These details help
me create textures that I can feel and
they help me capture the feelings and
emotions of the subjects, whether the
subject is human or animal.”
Although art has always been his
passion, Mueller has been able to
devote himself to it full-time since
retiring from a previous career and
moving to Cave Creek in 1999. He

typically does 8-15 new drawings each
year and they may take anywhere

drawings during the past 15 years. His

western including animals, people,
buildings, and trains. Mueller really
stands out with his ability to draw so
many different kinds of subjects. In
fact, he has won awards several times in
the past 10 years from the prestigious
Phippen Western Art Show including
a First place in the drawing category in
2010 as well as a second place in 2013
for the same category.
Mueller is very active with the local
Sonoran Arts League and is one of
only 7 artists who have participated in
the Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour
every year since 1999. Dick’s Coyote
Crossing Studio is a popular stop on
the tour. In fact, he is happy to show his
work almost anytime by appointment
throughout the year. His work can also

During the past several years, classic
western décor has grown in popularity.
As people visit the Wild West, they
often want to incorporate a bit of this
style back home. “A really nice trend
in western furniture has been that
most of it is made in America,” said
Valerie. “Hand crafted furniture made
in the Western U.S. using Reclaimed
Ayacuite Wood has been very popular.
“There are also a number of variations
including cowboy chic, Territorial
and Wild West genres and many can
be blended with Tuscan/Old World
pieces for a nice, eclectic but flowing
look.” Faith Weinberg echoed similar
thoughts: “It’s really not necessary

“One major reason for the popularity

Back in the days before electricity was
readily available, Cave Creek’s miners

Open Space is a very important part
of the Cave Creek area as more than
6,000 acres has been protected as
open space in the town. The residents
voted to tax themselves to pay for

the town government worked for
years to add another 4,000 acres of

As part of Maricopa County’s
Regional Parks System, the Spur Cross
Conservation Area encompasses
2,154 acres of diverse, rugged upper
Sonoran Desert. The Cave Creek wash
often flows during the winter months

archaeology sites. Remnants of
early mining and ranching, from

incredible habitat for desert wildlife.
Gateway Desert Awareness Park,
located just off of Cave Creek Road,
on Vermeersch Road in Cave Creek has
two nature trails that wind through
the park to help view the large variety
of desert plants and wildlife. Several
types of playground equipment can

on its own. There are also Ramadas,
a Desert Heritage Center, Vista

W
hile many outsiders don’t
always know where one town ends
and another starts, Carefree and Cave
Creek are no different. They blend
together like cream and sugar in a
nice cup of coffee. If Cave Creek
is a great representation of the old
west, Carefree is its complement,
as an example of the new west. In
fact, some have said the area’s motto
is “Home of Cowboys and Caviar,
Where the Old West Meets the New.”

While both towns represent a
population that enjoys a sense of
community and ranch-size space
to call home, Carefree is one of the
oldest master planned communities
in Arizona (but still not very
old). Planned in the 1950s with its
residential areas surrounding a vibrant
and inviting town center, it is home
to one of the world’s largest sundials
which spans 62 feet and points to the
North Star. There is also a nature trail,
amphitheater and play area for kids.
This is truly a community designed
for leisure with a mix of southwestern
culture.
Even the street names
represent Carefree’s laid back attitude
with names such as Easy Street,
Tranquil Trail and Ho & Hum Roads.
Surrounding the town center, there
are several shops, galleries, and
restaurants enclosed in the mostly
southwestern architecture that is
reminiscent of a small Spanish village.
All areas of town have extraordinary
views of nearby Black Mountain
with its eastern side brown-boulder
outcroppings that make it appear
distinctly different than the namesake
western side – A true “Must Visit”.

Indian jewelry, quality made from
the best Indian craftsmen is very
important to Cave Creek merchants.
Precious stones and quality metals
are used to create some of the
country’s best custom jewelry.
Two local stores that specialize
in this area include the Indian
Market at Stagecoach Village
and Ortega’s 6th Generation
in Carefree. Both stores offer a
large selection of both traditional
and
contemporary
jewelry.
Available at Indian Market
In an area known for its American
David Ortega, owner of Indian
Market, is from a family of traders
spanning five generations. They
also specialize in American Indian
art and crafts providing a wide
selection of Kachinas, pottery
and baskets, all made from skilled
American
Indian
craftsmen.
Available at Ortega’s 6th Generation
Ortega’s 6th Generation, located in
nearby Carefree, is a sixth generation
trading company that dates back
to 1898. Max Ortega leads the
Arizona operations that have been
providing quality items for decades.

during most of the year,” according
to Tonto Bar Grill owner, Eric Flatt.

The point is that with more
than 20 restaurants in the
area, there are a variety
of culinary styles and
cuisines to fit just about
every taste and can only be
experienced right here in
our town. There is steak,
wild game, southwestern
specialties, new American
cuisine, Mexican food,
tasty greasy burgers, Italian,
Mediterranean, BBQ and
fried chicken. Hungry yet?
A
lthough Cave Creek has a Dairy
Queen – what small town doesn’t - you
could search day and night throughout
the area (including Carefree) and not
find any restaurants, fast food or other,
that are part of a cookie cutter chain.
Sure, the owners of the popular Tonto Bar
& Grill at Rancho Mañana also operate
Cartwright’s (just down the street),
both of which are excellent - yet
each is very unique. El Encanto
also has El Encanto Dos just down
the road and has opened a third
location in Fountain Hills. I guess
that’s our version of a restaurant
chain North of Black Mountain.
42
El Encanto has waterside dining
with its famous duck pond, and
Bryan’s BBQ patio which surrounds
a huge centuries old Saguaro.
Other well known patios include
Harold’s with its fun indoor/outdoor
bar which is great for day or night
dining. The Buffalo Chip has a huge
outdoor bar with picnic tables designed
around its famous bull riding corral.
Big Earl’s Greasy Eats Patio is great for
people watching on Cave Creek Road in
the historic converted gas station. The
Horny Toad’s patio is just as fun. The
Cave Creek Smokehouse includes the
Pour House Patio which looks out to
the busy Frontier Town shops and was
recently expanded. The Spotted Donkey
Cantina, in nearby Carefree, features
a patio in the upscale el Pedregal.
Local restaurateurs know you love
the great outdoors and they have you
covered (in more ways than one).
Both covered and uncovered patios
are abundant at Cave Creek restaurants
including the popular Tonto Bar and
Grill with spectacular views of the
11th hole at Rancho Mañana Golf
Club and the nearby Continental
Mountains, “The climate in Cave Creek

When it comes to live music, some
would call it the Nashville, New Orleans,
or New York City of Arizona; we call
it Cave Creek. The town is quickly
becoming a valley favorite for all types
of evening entertainment featuring
all genres of music from original
country to pop cover bands. You can
often find a solo guitarist with a mic
at local open mic night or just a solo
guitar hanging on the wall of Bryan’s
Barbecue waiting for the next musician .
With nearly a dozen venues offering
live entertainment several nights per
week and a few nearly daily, Cave
Creek’s “Mile of Music” is red hot.
Country and Pop Cover are both
regular styles being played on a nightly
basis in Cave Creek. Additionally,
there is live bull riding two nights
per week at the Buffalo Chip Saloon
where you can see both professionals

From the Arizona History Dinners at
Cartwright’s Sonoran Ranch House to
the wildly popular and local Mogollon
at Harold’s, live entertainment is
making Cave Creek one of the most
popular destinations for visitors to
Arizona.
The Horny Toad often

the Cave Creek Smokehouse. The

Auction
Dates:
April 3, 2015 Preview Day and
April 4 - 5, 2015 Auction Days.
In an area as beautiful as Cave
Creek and Carefree, you would
expect the golf to equally impress.
Your expectations have certainly
been exceeded with two of the
state’s premier golf facilities
located within a stone’s throw
away from the center of town.
Rancho Mañana Golf Club,
located in Cave Creek, and the
two Boulders Resort courses in
Carefree offer unprecedented
natural beauty within their
respective
desert
settings.
Recently listed by Golf Digest
as “One of the Top 50 Courses
in the Country for Women,”
and ranked in the “Top 10 Golf
Courses” in Arizona by Ranking
Arizona, Rancho Mañana’s par70, championship layout features
dramatic
elevation
changes,
unspoiled desert terrain, abundant
wildlife and the rustic charm of the
historic dude ranch, which is now
part of the golf resort property.
It is definitely one of the best
Arizona golf courses that truly
represents the uniqueness of
golf in the Arizona Desert.
Cave Creek’s Stagecoach Village,
John Bettencourt has started what
is likely to be a growing and long
term set of events for the area. “Our
first few Classic Car Auctions went
well and we received very good
feedback. We are really looking
forward to the next auction in April
2015, said Bettencourt, owner of
Cave Creek Auctions & Events.
“We will also be conducting several
other types of auctions throughout
the year within the town. These
events will include a monthly
Saturday outdoor country auction
52

Arizona is known for some of
the best auto auctions in the
country and many of the major
auctions are conducted in nearby
Scottsdale during the month of

a natural choice to stage such an
event as nothing enhances the
beauty of a car than its setting.
With the old west backdrop of

of the month.” There will also
be Regular bi-weekly Wednesday
night auctions and Special High
End Treasure Hunt Auctions
every 8 weeks. These auctions
will feature classic and collector
cars, fine art, jewelry, firearms,
oddities and so much more.”
The Boulders Golf Club features
two championship golf courses
both designed by Jay Morrish. The
courses are considered among the
most demanding in the Southwest
and are known for their rugged
beauty as well. Each has also been
honored with numerous awards
from some of the nation’s top
golf publications including GOLF
Magazine and Golf Digest.
In fact, Rancho Mañana, was selected for its natural beauty as one
of 12 courses featured in the 2013

With the serenity of small town living
and all the convenience of a major
metropolitan area nearby, Cave Creek
is a valley favorite for both visitors and
residents. “People really like the open
space of the community,” said Paul
Sharpe of The Village of Surrey Hills. “The
entire town will never be overcrowded
like some parts of the valley.”
In fact, the town has done a great job
in protecting open space that will allow
both residents and visitors to continue
to enjoy the same native Sonoran desert
habitat that we take for granted today.
One of the current residential projects
in town that has really done a nice job
planning for future residents is The
Village at Surrey Hills. They have done

well in creating spaces for those seeking
an effortless place to live and enjoy the
tranquil lifestyle of Cave Creek.
In addition to the floor plans, a huge
attraction to Surrey Hills is the dramatic
mountainside community pool with
elevator access to some of the best views
in the area. It is a true outdoor gathering
area complete with a spa with cabana,

Quick Community Facts:
While community can mean many
things to different people, there
are certainly some very important
components of any successful
community which include a strong
commitment to education. Cave
Creek and Carefree area residents are
fortunate to have so many people
committed to strong educational
opportunities for both children and
adults. The Cave Creek Unified School
District has earned an “A” status from
the Arizona Department of Education
and the Paradise Valley Community
College at Black Mountain location
has been a large part of the
Community offering high quality
instruction at affordable rates. Many
of the class credits earned the PVCC
can be transferred to other higher
56
education institutions as it is part of
the Maricopa County Community
College District. Additionally, PVCC
at Black mountain offers many types
of new learning experiences each
semester through its continuing
education, workforce development,
and
community
programs.

F
or more than 30 years, the Fiesta
Days Rodeo affectionately tagged as
“The World’s Biggest Little Rodeo” has
provided the Cave Creek area with all
the traditional rodeo events including
bareback riding, saddle bronc, barrel
racing, and the always exciting bull
riding. World class professional rodeo
cowboys compete for both pride and
prizes in these action filled events.
The multi-day event always includes
so much more than just the cowboy/
cowgirl competitions. There is always
a golf tournament, a mutton bustin’
event for future rodeo stars, a kickoff western dance and a Rodeo Parade
right through the middle of Cave Creek.
Each of the three Rodeo performances
provide at least two hours of true
western entertainment including
all the traditional competitions.
58
Additionally, there are also some very
peculiar characters who provide some
comic relief between events. Both kids
and adults truly enjoy all the activities
associated with the Fiesta Days Rodeo.
A special thank you goes out to all
the dedicated volunteers of the Desert
Foothills Community Association
which puts on this genuine western
event each and every year. The dates for
the 2015 Rodeo will be March 27-29th.

W
hat’s in a name? We can only
imagine the reasons for some of
the street names in Carefree. The
center of town enjoys Easy Street,
Ho Rd, Hum Rd and Ho Hum
Rd. There are others that must
have been from some kind of wild
west battle such as Bloody Basin
Rd or Long Rifle Rd is near Bent
Barrel Rd, Derringer Drive, and Six
Guns Rd – all representative of
the wildest west you can imagine.
Others are more descriptive of
the new, less wild west, including
Peaceful Place, Tranquil Trail,
Rising Sun Rd, Mule Train Rd,
Boulder Drive, Old Paint Trail,
but what about Nevermind Trail,
Lazy Burro Rd, Lazy Lane, and
Primerose Path? Or why is Huff N
Puff Lane next to Breathless Drive?
Legend has it that the Founders,
KT Palmer and Tom Darlington,
said “they shook them out of a gin
bottle” Whichever the case, those
street names made national news
creating quite a buzz in the media.
As you look at the names of roads
surrounding the Private, Desert
Forest Golf Club, which include
Tee Time Court, Foursome Way,
Dogleg Drive, Short Putt Place, you
may even get a feeling that some of
these names actually make sense!
Carefree is more than a name, it is
a lifestyle. The whimsical names and
the master plan of this community
were designed to reflect a relaxing
attitude that didn’t allow its
residents to take life too seriously,
or at least to help show the lighter
side of things when necessary.
feet above the ground, making it
the world’s third largest. While a
shadow from the sun may not work
well to tell time in many parts of
the nation, Carefree’s 325+ days of
sunshine are a perfect companion
for an extra large sundial.
The motto of “Where the Sun Marks
Time” seemed to fit that attitude
perfectly and Carefree cofounder
KT Palmer commissioned the
Sundial in 1959. Solar engineer
John Yellott designed the structure,
which has a 62 foot gnomon (the
shadow casting part) and rises 35
