Accent - b Independent Living Newsletter biii JULY / AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2013 b b bb Notes from the Director - Adam Coggin AdamsPlace . . . the next BIG thing! Even though it has been fifteen years since we opened our doors, I believe AdamsPlace is still the “next big thing.” Just as the Apple Corporation and Steve Jobs drove innovation in technology to new heights, so does AdamsPlace in the world of Residential Living. We are becoming the residence of choice for couples and individuals as they pursue the best years of their lives. Someone who has never experienced AdamsPlace might ask, “Why is this?” My answer is simply, “The Community.” AdamsPlace is a community made up of the nicest, most heartwarming people in the world. Not only are the residents the best, I have had residents tell me that the “staff” is our greatest asset. There is no other community that has the quality of residents that we do. There is no other community that has the quality of staff/partners that we do. There is no other place in this area that provides the services we do. There is no other place that cares as much as we do. Our innovation comes not from the technology side like the company Apple, but from the service and caring side of our world. Our desire is to provide a remarkable living experience for our residents. We want to provide an elegant residential living environment that is clean, safe, and inviting. I want to say a special thank you to all the residents and partners that have participated in our fundraising efforts for the Alzheimer’s Association. We raised over $700.00 at the bake sale. Also, many of you have contributed to the rummage sale and the Chefin’ it Up competition. I thank you for all you have done for this cause. It is an honor and blessing to work here. Thank you for choosing AdamsPlace! - Adam LAUNDRY SERVICE BEING MADE AVAILABLE TO RESIDENTS Duds N Suds Laundry invites you to try their Wash, Dry, Fold Laundry service. Greetings! From Betsy Bond Activities Director There plentyAugust’s of evidence to suggest Scenesis from Activities Fair: that there are real health benefits to friendship. A close-knit community helps us prevent depression and illness, slow the aging process, promote mental health, and even sustain a longer and happier life. Moving to AdamsPlace Independent Living provides each resident with a built-in community. Just how closeknit that community is for any given resident varies, as does the number of people that one may call close friends. Thank you for your participation! Outings and events are ways to experience and even expand one’s community here at AdamsPlace, and even the Partners who daily enhance life for the residents are a part of the larger AdamsPlace community. What can you do to create a richer community experience for yourself? How might you be able to contribute to the group experience? When have you reached out to someone? Who would benefit from your friendship? Thanks for being a part of my Thank you to Sandy Everett for arranging this for us. life at AdamsPlace! - Betsy Dr. Ming Wang presented eye surgery information laced with compassion. Dr. Wang and his friend played some beautiful music as an extra treat. Back in June, we heard music from Unity Youth Choir from Lexington, Kentucky. Also in June, we were amazed by the folk dancers from Turkey, who were fantastic. MidSouth Bank brought us music, door prizes, and a Wine & Cheese. bBeth, Abby & Josh all played piano well, bbut young Josh was the big crowd pleaser. The residents enjoyed every bit of it - our thanks to Tina Minor for this. The table outside the Wine & Cheese was manned by red-headed Tim, who is both a MidSouth employee and big brother to All three of the Stanczak family children were superb pianists and charming young people. the three young pianists who performed. CONVERSATIONS: The Power to Care For and Protect the People You Love When asked, most people say they hope to spend the end of their lives at home, free of pain and in the company of the people they love. Without advance planning this is not likely to happen. In a country where we cherish the right to make our own health care decisions, why is it so few of us have exercised this right when it comes to decisions and preferences for end-of-life care? The fact is most Americans spend their final days and weeks in a hospital, in pain, subject to an endless stream of medical interventions. Having a ‘good death,’ the ability to die in the place you would choose, can be extremely difficult without good communication. Studies show that when patients and their loved ones discuss end-of-life issues early on, patients are more likely to have a peaceful death and their loved ones are less likely to suffer from prolonged grief and depression. Extraordinary medical breakthroughs have created a culture of belief that anything is possible and death is an option. We do not protect one another by avoiding the subject. On the contrary, one conversation can mean the difference between a traumatic death and a peaceful one. Plan in advance, before an illness or a crisis. Learn about options and how to make informed decisions. In those situations where capacity to make decisions is lost, families will suffer less trying to guess what to do. Let's find our way back to knowing how best to care well for the people that matter to us. - Reprinted from www.thegiftinitiative.org/why-talk at the suggestion of a resident - thanks! Information.
