BUFFED FINISH TEAK (OUTDOOR USE)
Material Properties
Gloster buffed teak benefits from an enhanced surface preparation procedure, where the natural oils already contained within the teak are
brought to the surface and burnished to produce a rich sheen and a consistent colour.
As with natural finish teak, left to age naturally outside, buffed teak will gradually change to a soft, silver-grey as the pigments in the
surface layer of the wood begin to fade away. After the first few exposures to water, you should also expect the surface grain to rise
slightly. As a part of the buffing process, the surface is wetted before final sanding to raise the grain, so there will be significantly less
raised grain on buffed teak than on natural finish teak. We recommend that you allow your teak furniture to weather naturally this way and
simply clean thoroughly once or twice a year with our Teak Cleaner. Buffed teak furniture may also benefit from an occasional light sanding
to remove any raised grain and restore a smooth finish to the surface. Under no circumstances should a power washer be used to clean
teak furniture as this will erode the surface.
Because teak is a naturally oily wood, it is not possible to paint or varnish. Any paint or varnish applied will not adhere properly to the
surface and after a short while will start to peel off.
If you wish to retain the golden-brown colour of new teak we also offer a Teak Sealer. Application of Teak Sealer will not affect the strength
or longevity of the furniture in any way, just its appearance. If you elect to use Teak Sealer you will be embarking on a regular maintenance
programme as Teak Sealer needs to be regularly re-applied to provide continuous protection.
If you intend to store your furniture over the winter, we recommend that you do so in a water-tight garden shed or garage. However, we
advise that you do not move teak furniture from the garden straight into a heated indoor room for storage, as the sharp differences in
temperature and humidity may cause the wood to split.
To protect teak surfaces from staining and to help maintain the silver-grey patina on weathered teak, we recommend using our Teak
Protector. Our Teak Protector creates an almost invisible shield which helps to prevent food (coffee, ketchup, red wine, olive oil, etc.)
penetrating into the teak and causing unsightly stains. Teak Protector also helps protects the wood against the ingress of moisture, the
adhesion of dirt and prevents mildew growth.

OUTDOOR ACRYLIC CUSHION FABRICS
One of the best ways to keep cushions looking good and to delay the need for deep cleaning is to properly maintain the
fabric cushion cover. This can be accomplished by simply brushing off dirt before it becomes embedded, wiping up spills
as soon as they occur or spot cleaning soon after stains occur. Cushion covers should always be removed from the cushion
filling prior to any cleaning. Cushions should be stored in a dry location when not in use.
General Cleaning
1. Brush off any loose dirt.
2. Prepare a cleaning solution of 1:16 mild detergent to lukewarm water (less than 100°F/40°C).
3. Use a sponge or a soft bristle brush to clean.
4. Allow cleaning solution to soak into fabric.
5. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
6. Allow fabric to air dry.
Spot Cleaning
1. Apply a light mist of mild detergent and water using a spray bottle.
2. Work the solution into the stain by lightly scrubbing the area with a sponge or very soft bristle brush.
3. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
4. Blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel or sponge.
5. Wet-vacuum or blot excess water.
6. Air dry, Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all soap residue is removed.

Hand Washing
1. Soak fabric in a solution of 1:16 mild detergent to lukewarm water (less than 100°F/40°C).
2. Use a sponge or a soft bristle brush as necessary.
3. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
4. Air dry.
Machine Washing
Machine wash on cold water setting (100°F/40°C). Depending on the load size, use normal amounts of a mild laundry
detergent. Allow fabric to air dry.
Note - For cushion covers that have a back-coating, we advise against repeated machine washing as this may cause the
back-coating to disintegrate.
General Tips
DO NOT dry clean
DO NOT use bleach
DO NOT use aggressive detergents
DO NOT iron or steam iron
DO NOT tumble dry
Store cushions in a dry location when not in use.

OUTDOOR LOUNGE
Material Properties
Weatherproof, Outdoor Lounge cushion covers (as used on both fully upholstered Outdoor Lounge collections, integral
cushions on seating items and some optional cushion pads) use either Sunbrella ® Rain or Outdura/Crypton 100% solution
dyed acrylic fabrics (USA) or Sunbrella ® PVC/Textile fabrics (Rest of World).
Sunbrella ® PVC/Textile fabrics are similar to a traditional PVC sling, but with the addition of textile yarns within the weave
to offer increased comfort and the addition of a lamination layer on the reverse of the fabric to aid water resistance.
Outdoor Lounge cushions are designed to be highly water resistant, so no water can enter into the cushion filling itself.
In the unlikely case that any water does penetrate the outer cover, the construction of the cushions themselves including a water resistant but breathable inner liner and reticulated foam & dacron core - allows water to freely pass
through the interior and exit underneath. Open mesh bases on the outer covers assist by aiding airflow within the
cushion, further speeding up the drying process.
The covers on most base and back cushions are removable and the interior of the cushions is water repellent. However,
due to the highly tailored construction of these cushions, Gloster does not recommend removing the covers unless it is
for replacement purposes. As with any item left permanently outside and exposed to the elements, regular cleaning is
recommended. We also advise furniture is covered in the winter months if possible.

OUTDOOR LOUNGE
Cleaning (Light Soiling)
As with any item left permanently outside and exposed to the elements, regular cleaning is recommended - at least once
a year. Cleaning every month when in use will ensure that the furniture remains looking at its best. If the fabric is stained
with oil, butter or any other oil-based product, we strongly advise that this is removed IMMEDIATELY using a solution of
warm water and mild detergent as detailed below. We also advise furniture is covered in the winter months if possible.
For regular, general cleaning and light soiling use a solution of warm water and mild detergent.
1. Gently brush the fabric clean with a sponge, soft scrubbing pad or a soft bristle scrubbing brush.
2. Rinse well with clean water to remove all traces of the detergent solution.
DO NOT use a power washer to clean/rinse the cushions as this will cause de-lamination of the membrane on the inside
of the cushion cover.
Watermarks
Due to the large surface area of base cushions in particular, it is possible, under certain conditions, for watermarks to
appear on the fabric. Watermarks are not ‘stains’ as such and can occur on almost any fabric under certain conditions i.e. uneven wetting and/or uneven drying. To avoid water marking it is important to dry cushions evenly, preferably in
sunny, breezy conditions.
If a watermark appears, use Gloster Outdoor Lounge Fabric Cleaner to remove the mark, then rinse the cushion
thoroughly all over, using clean water, and then allow to dry as evenly and quickly as practicable. Ideally, this should be
in the open air and in direct sunlight if possible, which will assist more rapid and even drying.

OUTDOOR LOUNGE
Cleaning (Heavy Soiling)
For more ingrained dirt and/or to remove specific stains use Gloster Outdoor Lounge Fabric Cleaner.
Instructions for Use
1. Before using the Outdoor Lounge Fabric Cleaner eye protection should be worn. Cover the ground under your
working area before cleaning.
2. Mix one scoop (supplied with the cleaner) of powder per quart (1.3 litres) of water, warm water will allow the
best results.
3. Stir thoroughly until the blue colour disappears, mix only what you intend to use within a 10 hour period.
4. Wet down surface of the fabric with clean water before application of the solution.
5. Sponge or brush the solution onto the surface of the fabric.
6. Let stand for 15 minutes (extra soiled areas may require a longer / overnight for very heavy soiling) keeping the
area wet with solution, then agitate with a soft plastic scrubbing brush.
7. Rinse with clean water. Allow cushion to dry completely before use.
8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 if staining persists.
Mildew
All the fabrics used on Outdoor Lounge furniture are generally resistant to mildew, however in extreme humid and moist
environments, it is possible that some level of mildew may develop on the surface of the fabric. To prevent and remove mildew,
we recommend that items are cleaned at least once a year using Gloster Outdoor Lounge Fabric Cleaner.
Teak Stains
Cushions that are in contact with new teak can occasionally show signs of teak staining. This is caused when the pigments and
oils within the new teak bleed out over time leaving a red-brown stain on the cushion fabric. To clean these teak stains from
cushions, we recommend the use of ‘Murphy Oil Soap’ - a common household cleaner that can be easily purchased on the
internet or from household retailers.

POWDER COATED ALUMINIUM
Material Properties
Aluminium is a light and tough metal with an excellent strength to weight ratio and corrosion resistance - making it an
ideal material for outdoor furniture.
The corrosion resistance of Gloster’s aluminium furniture is enhanced by pre-treating the aluminium extrusions with a
chrome conversion coating that deposits a thin layer of chrome on the surface. The treated frame is subsequently coated
with an electro-statically applied, powder coat finish. The electro-static application method ensures 100% coverage of
the metal’s surface area and provides a consistent and tough finish that far exceeds other conventional paint finishes.
The resulting finish is knock and scratch resistant, impervious to moisture, highly resistant to corrosion and easy to
clean.

Repairing Deep Scratches
The chrome conversion coating under the powder coat enhances the longevity of the furniture by ensuring scratches that
penetrate the powder coat do not cause accelerated corrosion - in particular when used in marine or similarly aggressive
environments. Scratches will not have a significant effect on the longevity of the furniture - nevertheless these can be
repaired using the touch-up pen included in the Gloster Powder Coat Repair Kit. To repair a scratch using the touch-up
pen, first shake the pen for one minute to mix the paint thoroughly. Push the nib onto a hard surface 4-5 times to ensure
paint is released into the nib. Carefully paint in the direction of the scratch. The paint will dry almost instantly and any
excess should be wiped off with a clean soft cloth.

POWDER COATED STAINLESS STEEL
Material Properties
Stainless steel is the generic name for a number of different steels used primarily for their resistance to corrosion. The
one key element they all share is a certain minimum percentage of chromium of 10.5%. Although other elements,
particularly nickel and molybdenum, are added to improve corrosion resistance, chromium is always the deciding factor.
However, despite its various additions stainless steel still behaves as steel, and even the highly alloyed stainless steel
grades such as 316 still contain a minimum of 62% iron.
Gloster manufactures using 304 grade stainless steel coated with an electro-statically applied, powder coat finish. The
electro-static application method ensures 100% coverage of the metal’s surface area and provides a consistent and
tough finish that far exceeds other conventional paint finishes. The resulting finish is knock and scratch resistant,
impervious to moisture, highly resistant to corrosion and easy to clean.

SLING
Material Properties
Available in a wide variety of designs and colours, Sling is a generic term for a woven, open-mesh fabric made from a
vinyl coated, high strength polyester yarn. For our sling furniture we use only the highest quality Textilene ® and Batyline ®
woven vinyl.
Historically, slings are found combined with powder-coated aluminium frames. However, due to its inherent good looks,
exceptional comfort and practicality, Gloster also has designed products that combine sling with both teak and stainless
steel frames. One of the main benefits of sling is comfort. When stretched taught between two side frames, sling provides
a yielding seating surface that moulds to your individual body shape. Our Textilene ® and Batyline ® woven vinyl is
resistant to fading, mildew and wear & tear under the most severe weather conditions.

SLING
Cleaning
We recommend that slings are cleaned using Gloster's Sling & Woven Cleaner, following the instructions detailed on the
label. It is important to use a non-foaming cleaner on slings, as a foaming product will leave residues in the gaps inbetween the weave which will then attract dirt. A pressure washer should not be used on sling as it may damage the
fabric.

particularly nickel and molybdenum, are added to improve corrosion resistance, chromium is always the deciding factor.
However, despite its various additions stainless steel still behaves as steel, and even the highly alloyed stainless steel
grades such as 316 still contain a minimum of 62% iron.
Gloster manufactures using 304 grade stainless steel with an electro-polished (EP) finish brushed finish. Electropolishing is widely used in the electronics, food and medical industries and on components for cruise ships and yachts,
where a corrosion resistant, smooth and easy to maintain surface is of vital importance. Electro-polishing is an
electrochemical process whereby the combination of an electrical current and a strong acid erodes the surface of the
stainless steel substrate atom by atom. This process removes much of the iron from the surface of the steel, but leaves
the chrome intact, resulting in more shiny, but much improved corrosion resistant surface.
However, as with any item left permanently outside, even electro-polished stainless steel furniture requires regular
maintenance to keep it looking as new. Before the furniture leaves our factory the welds are ground flush and the surface
is polished with Scotchbrite, usually in the long direction of the legs or rails. This provides a smooth, resistant surface
that is easy to clean and maintain.
Although electro-polished stainless steel is generally highly resistant to corrosion, the surface can be susceptible to
cosmetic deterioration by the effects of salt water and air-borne chemicals. This may result in small brown spots
appearing on its surface (this process is likely to be accelerated in coastal areas). These spots in no way affect the
strength, integrity or longevity of the furniture, they are simply superficial discolourations that require cleaning to restore
the stainless steel to its original appearance.

Removing Rust Spots
With all our stainless steel products we include a Scotchbrite pad. If any brown spots appear on the stainless steel they
can be easily cleaned by gently rubbing the surface of the steel, in the direction of the brushed finish, with the
Scotchbrite pad. We advise items are not rubbed excessively in this way as there is a risk of removing the EP finish.
If these deposits are allowed to build up, then it may be necessary to clean the product more thoroughly with Gloster's

The basic structure of a woven item is made from a fully welded, powder-coated aluminium frame. Once welded, the
entire frame is electro-statically powder coated in a tough, smooth finish that matches the colour of the wicker. This way,
the frame is fully protected against corrosion and becomes virtually invisible once it has been woven over.
Woven furniture can be left outside all year round and is able to withstand temperatures from -20°C to +55°C (-4°F to
131°F). When very cold, the weave will become stiffer than normal and when very hot, the weave will become more
elastic. However, it will always revert to it's normal elasticity, once the ambient temperature stabilises.
Gloster uses a more textured, thicker type of wicker than most other manufacturers. Although this wicker is harder to
weave, it is stronger, more resistant to tension, tearing and splitting, wears better and gives a more natural feel to the
product.

CARE & MAINTENANCE FACT SHEET
WOVEN
Cleaning
We recommend that woven furniture is regularly cleaned using Gloster's Sling & Woven Cleaner, following the
instructions detailed on the label. It is important to use a non-foaming cleaner on woven furniture, as a foaming product
will leave residues in the gaps in-between the weave which will then attract dirt. A pressure hose on a low setting is
acceptable to use on woven furniture, but avoid any teak components, as the high pressure can erode
the surface of the timber.
Gloster Sling & Woven Cleaner - 25oz / 750ml plastic bottle with trigger-action head. Water-based formula - both nontoxic and environmentally friendly. Cleans and restores the new look of sling and synthetic wicker woven furniture.
Special non-foaming formula. Each bottle is supplied complete with a special applicator pad.

Repairing
Scratch marks or abrasion to the edges of the fibre can be repaired by very briefly and carefully applying heat (i.e. the
flame of a cigarette lighter) to the affected area and rubbing along the length of the fibre with a piece of hard cardboard
to restore a smooth edge. This can be a tricky procedure to perfect, so we suggest you try a couple of test runs on an
area of wicker that is hidden from view – i.e. on the underside of the furniture.
If fibres are accidentally cut or broken, a piece of furniture can generally be repaired successfully by removing the broken
section of wicker and carefully weaving in a new strip.
