Sunday 20th March 2016
Sixth Sunday of Lent
Palm Sunday – In Whom do we HOPE.
Refreshing life, transforming faith, at the heart of the community
Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral.
Children are welcome to our services.
There is a playpen for younger children and there are toys in the quiet room
which is the room at the front of the Cathedral on the left hand side.
THE ANGEL - HUMAN DANCE
A weeping woman, puzzled,
Outside an empty tomb.
Cries from her heart "They have taken my Master away"
2000 years later,
As we celebrate the resurrection mystery,
We continue to proclaim
His great and glorious name!
For Christ’s resurrection gives us life on earth
As both angel and human.
The angel makes the human transcendent
And the human gives the angel earthly form.
This Easter-tide we are invited to dance,
Knowing, that in our very living,
We learn, the dance.

Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name
of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!
Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love towards us you
sent your Son to take nature upon him, and to suffer death upon
the cross; grant that we may follow the example of his great
humility and share in his glorious resurrection; through him who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and
for ever. Amen.

Service of Reconciliation and
Healing
Wednesday 23rd March 7pm
As we conclude Lent and enter Easter, the
Reconciliation Service is an opportunity for us give
over to God past hurts, wrongs and other negative
influences we may have endured. To forgive as to
be forgiven are foundation stones of the Church.
They are a treasure and occasion to grasp the life
God wants for us. This service is for anyone to
attend - for any burden they may be carrying. It
will be led by the clergy with Philip as organist.
‘God forgives you, forgive others, forgive yourself.’
Morning Tea for Hilda
Hilda Bester, who has been organist at the Cathedral for 10 years will be leaving Nelson shortly.
To thank Hilda for her support and contribution to the Cathedral over the years and wish her well, we will be
having a Morning Tea for Hilda after the 10am Service on Sunday 3rd April.
If you would like to contribute to a leaving present, please leave a donation in a marked envelope in the collection

or at the Office.
8am and 10am first reading from
the Book of Zechariah Chapter 9
verses 9-12
Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem!
Lo, your king comes to you;
triumphant and victorious is he,
humble and riding on a donkey, on a
colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut
off the chariot from Ephraim and the
warhorse from Jerusalem; and the
battle-bow shall be cut off, and he
shall command peace to the nations;
his dominion shall be from sea to
sea, and from the River to the ends
of the earth. As for you also, because
of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will set your prisoners free from the
waterless pit. Return to your
stronghold, O prisoners of hope;
today I declare that I will restore to
you double.
When he had come near Bethphage
and Bethany, at the place called the
Mount of Olives, he sent two of the
disciples, saying, ‘Go into the village
ahead of you, and as you enter it you
will find tied there a colt that has
never been ridden. Untie it and bring
it here. If anyone asks you, “Why are
you untying it?” just say this: “The
Lord needs it.”’ So those who were
sent departed and found it as he had
told them. As they were untying the
colt, its owners asked them, ‘Why are
you untying the colt?’ They said, ‘The
Lord needs it.’ Then they brought it to
Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks
on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As
he rode along, people kept spreading
their cloaks on the road. As he was
now approaching the path down from
the Mount of Olives, the whole
multitude of the disciples began to
praise God joyfully with a loud voice
for all the deeds of power that they
had seen, saying,
8am and 10am Second Reading
from Philippians Chapter 2 verses
5-11
Let the same mind be in you that was
in Christ Jesus, who, though he was
in the form of God, did not regard
equality with God as something to be
exploited, but emptied himself, taking
the form of a slave, being born in
human likeness. And being found in
human form, he humbled himself and
became obedient to the point of
death— even death on a cross.
Therefore God also highly exalted
him and gave him the name that is
above every name, so that at the
name of Jesus every knee should
bend, in heaven and on earth and
under the earth, and every tongue
should confess that Jesus Christ is
Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
8am and 10am Gospel according
to St. Luke Chapter 19 verses 2840
After he had said this, he went on
ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
‘Blessed is the king who comes in the
name of the Lord! Peace in heaven,
6
and glory in the highest heaven!’
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd
said to him, ‘Teacher, order your
disciples to stop.’ He answered, ‘I tell
you, if these were silent, the stones
would shout out.’
10am Psalm 118
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good :
his mercy endures for ever.
Let Israel now proclaim :
that his mercy endures for ever.
Open me the gates of righteousness :
and I will enter and give thanks to the Lord.
This is the gate of the Lord :
the righteous shall enter it.
I will praise you, for you answered me :
and have become my salvation.
The stone that the builders rejected :
has become the head of the corner.
This is the Lord’s doing :
and it is marvellous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made :
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
O Lord, save us, we pray :
O Lord, send us prosperity.
Blessed is he who comes, in the name of the Lord :
from the house of the Lord we bless you.
The Lord is God, and he has given us light :
guide the festal throng up to the horns of the altar.
You are my God and I will praise you :
you are my God, I will exalt you.
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good :
and his mercy endures for ever.

slave; that one also they beat and
insulted and sent away emptyhanded. And he sent yet a third; this
one also they wounded and threw
out. Then the owner of the vineyard
said, “What shall I do? I will send my
beloved son; perhaps they will
respect him.” But when the tenants
saw him, they discussed it among
themselves and said, “This is the
heir; let us kill him so that the
inheritance may be ours.” So they
threw him out of the vineyard and
killed him. What then will the owner
of the vineyard do to them? He will
come and destroy those tenants and
give the vineyard to others.’ When
they heard this, they said, ‘Heaven
forbid!’ But he looked at them and
said, ‘What then does this text mean:
And now I will tell you what I will do to
my vineyard. I will remove its hedge,
and it shall be devoured; I will break
down its wall, and it shall be trampled
down. I will make it a waste; it shall
not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be
overgrown with briers and thorns; I
will also command the clouds that
they rain no rain upon it.
For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts
is the house of Israel, and the people
of Judah are his pleasant planting; he
expected justice, but saw bloodshed;
righteousness, but heard a cry!
7pm Second Lesson from the
Gospel of St Luke Chapter 20
verses 9-19
He began to tell the people this
parable: ‘A man planted a vineyard,
and leased it to tenants, and went to
another country for a long time.
When the season came, he sent a
slave to the tenants in order that they
might give him his share of the
produce of the vineyard; but the
tenants beat him and sent him away
empty-handed. Next he sent another
“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone”?
Everyone who falls on that stone will
be broken to pieces; and it will crush
anyone on whom it falls.’ When the
scribes and chief priests realized that
he had told this parable against them,
they wanted to lay hands on him at
that very hour, but they feared the
people.
7pm Psalm 69 1-20
Save me, O God:
for the waters have come up even to my throat.
I sink in the deep mire where no footing is:
I have come into deep waters and the flood sweeps over me.
I am weary with crying out, my throat is parched:
my eyes fail with watching so long for my God.
8
Those that hate me without cause
are more in number than the hairs of my head :
those that would destroy me are many,
they oppose me wrongfully
O God, you know my foolishness :
and my sins are not hidden from you.
Let not those who wait for you be shamed because of me,
O Lord God of hosts:
let not those who seek you be disgraced on my account,
O God of Israel.
For your sake have I suffered reproach:
and shame has covered my face.
I have become a stranger to my brothers:
an alien to my own mother’s sons.
Zeal for your house has eaten me up:
and the taunts of those who taunt you have fallen on me.
I afflicted myself with fasting:
and that was turned to my reproach.
I made sackcloth my clothing:
and I became a byword to them.
Those who sit in the gate talk of me:
and the drunkards make songs about me.
But to you, Lord, I make my prayer:
at an acceptable time.
Answer me, O God, in your abundant goodness:
and with your sure deliverance.
Bring me out of the mire, so that I may not sink:
let me be delivered from my enemies, and from the deep waters.
Let not the flood overwhelm me or the depths swallow me up:
let not the Pit shut its mouth upon me.
Hear me, O Lord, as your loving-kindness is good:
turn to me, as your compassion is great.
Do not hide your face from your servant:
for I am in trouble O be swift to answer me!
Draw near to me and redeem me:
O ransom me because of my enemies!
You know all their taunts:
my adversaries are all in your sight.
