Happy Hour in the High Peaks
By Kim & Pam Ladd
While on a road trip in the summer of 2010, sisters Kim
and Pam Ladd hatched a fun and crazy notion to write
a book. What began as a cocktail recipe book swiftly
morphed into Happy Hour in the High Peaks: An
Adirondack Bar Guide. In 2011 and 2012, they visited
over 120 bars in the Adirondacks, took notes, and
interviewed patrons, staff, and owners.
The 160-page, full color, hardcover book
contains reviews of their favorite 46 bars,
which they call the High Peaks, and a listing
of 46 more bars called Trailheads. The book
also includes 46 Adirondack-themed drink
recipes and photos.
Hoping to share their experience, they also offer a Happy
Hour Trail Passport. With a visa page and discount coupon
for each High Peak, they encourage Adirondack Park
guests and residents to visit all 46 High Peak bars and
become Happy Hour 46ers.

Adirondack Trail Runner
By Spencer Morrisey
“I have found a new love,” I thought to myself as I decided to go trail running that one
bright and balmy day. It was a new sport to me, and it seemed that I kept selecting the
trails that were either out of my league or just not on fun terrain. That was the year
when Corenne Black and I dreamed up the idea that there should be a trail running book
which gave appropriate destinations for this high speed sport. A couple years later,
here it is. We figured we couldn’t be the only ones discouraged with terrain frustration,
so we developed Adirondack Trail Runner so athletes could select trails that would be
right for them. The book includes in-depth trail descriptions for more than 100 trail
destinations, routes and loop, maps, directions to the trails, photos, terrain profiles, red
tape, and some fun anecdotes here and there. Periodically a new edition will be printed
with added destinations and updated trail conditions. Trail running is a sport that is
gaining momentum, no pun intended; knowing where to go and what to expect is very
important.
Adirondack Trail Runner can be found at Bookstore Plus and High Peaks Cyclery in Lake
Placid, The Mountaineer in Keene Valley, The Community Store in Saranac Lake, Hoss’s
Country Corner in Long Lake, The Mountainman in Old Forge, The Adirondack Reader
in Inlet, and in many other outdoor sports retailers and bookshops within the beautiful
Blue Line.
