Why OASIS?
You know, almost every day something happens
at OASIS that defines who we are and what we do.
From a Beginners Exercise class to Cardio Motown;
computer classes on iCloud and Excel to Introduction
to Computers; OASIS Orchestra practice to the
25th Anniversary Special Event with Actors Theater
of Indiana at The Mansion of Oak Hill; a note from
a tutor thanking us for the opportunity to make a
difference in the life of a child; to the wonderful article
from a volunteer with Better Choices Better Health–
Diabetes on making choices to save her life.
I hope the picture of the painting that is featured on
our cover brings delight and inspiration to you as you
look at upcoming classes, programs, events and travel
opportunities with OASIS for the spring. Jerry Dreesen,
OASIS member and traveler, embarked on his journey
with art and poetry after he retired.
Jerry Dreesen and
his wife of 51 years,
Sandy, have been longtime OASIS members
and travelers. After their
recent trip to St. Louis on
our Celebrate! OASIS
Indianapolis 25th
Anniversary Tour, Jerry
shared “Jungle” his most recent painting which we

opportunities for older adults to continue
their personal growth and provide
meaningful service to the community.
Organization
Nationally, OASIS serves more than

Indianapolis area.
chose to feature on the cover of the Spring magazine.
In his remarks that accompanied the picture Jerry
writes… “because you had asked where I get my
inspiration for my art, I wanted to show you how the
Missouri Botanical Garden’s Climatron, inspired this
36”x48” acrylic painting. Thanks to OASIS for the
great trip that helped make this happen.
Sandy and Jerry were childhood friends who were
blessed to rediscover each other after their teenage
years and together have shared their lives with four
children, families and grandchildren.
On the cover
“I am so pleased you took the
time to look at my art. It is what
I love to do. This part of my
journey was a new discovery for
me after I retired. I am self taught
and consider myself a student,
challenging myself to learn new
ways to express myself artistically.
I write haiku and other short form
Japanese poetry as well mostly
for my own pleasure and for those who appreciate what
I create. Thanks to OASIS for continued educationalbased travel opportunities. We always learn something
new and meet new friends along the way.” –Jerry Dreesen

Inside Tips to Manage Your Computer
This session will explore iCloud. iCloud is a free
data storage service from Apple which offers you
the ability to store music, photos, apps, contacts and
documents on the web, rather than on your computer.
You can share this information on multiple devices (up
to 10), such as your computer, iPod, iPhone and iPad.
The basic service comes with 5GB of free storage.
You are welcome to bring your devices, but this
is a lecture/demonstration, not hands-on tutorial.
Handouts included.
This class will help make your computer friendlier
and remove some of those nagging mysteries like:
Where did my file go? Where is my toolbar? Where
did this come from? How do I get out of this? This
session will also include tips to using the Internet:
there are so many resources, but do you know what
to look for? All of these questions and more will be

Will this food kill me or heal me?
Sondra Hayes-Hartman is learning to manage diabetes
Sondra E. Hayes-Hartman has witnessed
the devastating effects of diabetes in her
family and has changed her lifestyle to
control the disease. Now she leads OASIS
workshops designed by Stanford University to
help others successfully manage diabetes.
Since I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes
35 years ago, I have been determined to
educate myself about this disease. I have
attended classes and read anything I can find
about how to protect myself from related
problems with my heart, eyes, kidneys, brain,
feet and nerves. I have changed my lifestyle to
manage this condition and want to help others
learn how to do the same.
My biggest success has been maintaining
my blood sugar in a normal range. My blood
pressure is normal and I do not take any medication. The changes I have made
in life have not always been easy. Whenever I am tempted with unhealthy food
choices, I ask myself, “Will this food item kill me or heal me?” If it won’t heal me,
it’s off limits.
I have seen the ravages of diabetes with many members of my family. My aunt
suffered from retinopathy, heart failure and the amputation of her right leg. My
sister died from kidney failure and heart disease. The tragedy is that so much pain
and suffering could have been avoided with education in how to self-manage this
disease.
As a child I learned from my father that diabetes could be controlled. He read
everything he could find about the disease. We learned to eat in moderation. My
father’s diet consisted of foods high in fiber, lean meats, fish, fruits and vegetables.
He was an outstanding role model.
I have made many changes in my lifestyle to keep my blood sugar in a normal
range. I walk 30-40 minutes five to six times per week, lift weights, stretch,
meditate and do yoga. I use a blood glucose monitor to test my glucose two to three
times per day and I get a regular A1C test. My grocery list no longer contains soft
drinks, juice, white bread or rice, potatoes, sweets or processed snacks. My meals
consist of vegetables, fruit, salmon, tilapia and meat substitutes. I have learned to
carry healthy, low carbohydrate snacks such as nuts, fruit and vegetables.
I have vowed to share my knowledge with others. In 2013 I volunteered to be
trained as a leader for Better Choices, Better Health-Diabetes workshops offered
by OASIS Indianapolis, which uses the Diabetes Self-Management curriculum
developed at Stanford University. I am happy to be able to help others learn to
manage their diabetes through these workshops.•

Better Choices,
Better Health —
Diabetes Workshop
Developed and tested at
Stanford University, Better
Choices, Better Health-Diabetes, has been shown to
help people better manage their
health. This free discussionbased workshop teaches adults
who have Type 2 diabetes
how to cope with common
symptoms. During each of
the seven weekly sessions, a
group of 10-15 adults will share
and learn about: understand
what to eat and how to make
it enjoyable; monitor and
manage your blood sugar;
start or maintain an exercise
program; communicate better
with family, friends, and your
medical team; design a personal
self-management program.

Butterflies are some of the most beautiful and

Premiere Indiana Showing
of After the Fair Documentary
Join OASIS for a screening of the
documentary After the Fair, exploring
the legacy of the 1964-65 NY World’s
Fair. The project visits the places the
relics from the Fair have ended up, but
also examines the technologies and
ideals from the fair that shape our
world 50 years later. The film mixes
archival footage of the Fair with
modern-day interviews with those
who attended, and created the Fair.

Aim High! OASIS Hits the Bull’s-eye in Darke County, Ohio
Let’s step over the state line and
explore Darke County, Ohio. We
will travel by deluxe motor coach to
the historic location of Fort Greene
Ville, a pioneer fort built under General Anthony
Wayne’s command. We will better recognize this
historic location as Greenville, with a history, starting
with a mixer produced for commercial bakers as far
back as 1908. The
Kitchen Aid® Stand
Mixer for Home use
was introduced in
1919. Although the
basic design remains
unchanged, the mixer
has evolved … the
model sold in 1920
weighed 68 pounds!
… and continues to be
refined to this day. We
will enjoy a behindthe-scenes look at the entire manufacturing process at
the Kitchen Aid® factory where we are sure to have a
new appreciation for the way products are made. Next
we will head to the Kitchen Aid® Experience Store

Center. Here we will dine
on a private catered lunch with a brief presentation
followed by docent led tour to explore this 35,000
-square-foot museum. Afterwards, we will find
ourselves nestled among the vineyard at the Winery
at Versailles. Our Annie Oakley - era adventure will
continue as we enter this remodeled tobacco barn.
Enjoy the elegant but rustic chandelier, cozy seating
areas and the vineyard view. Our host will provide us
with wine tasting and the history of this family owned
winery, from its inception in Wilcox, Pennsylvania, to
the present-day facility in Versailles, Ohio. Back home
to Indiana we will go as we enjoy the great memories
and tastes from the day.
