Five Day Favorite Alaskan Trek Wrangell St. Elias National Park, Kennicott/McCarthy, Prince William Sound, Kenai Fjords, Katmai and Lake Clark National Parks Day 1 Anchorage to Kennicott/McCarthy Departure from Anchorage at 10 AM for a gorgeous flight over the Chugach Mountains along the jagged tops to view Dall sheep and mountain goat. Continue along the Chitina and Copper Rivers into Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Experience an over flight of the Root Glacier and the abandoned buildings of the copper mine for a birdseye-view. We land at Long Lake or the McCarthy airstrip to meet the Kennicott Glacier Lodge van for a short 8-mile drive to the lodge. Picnic lunch served along the way in a remote wilderness setting. Time permitting, guests may have the opportunity for a short hike to view the remains of the Kennicott Copper Mines before returning to the lodge for a delicious familystyle dinner. Enjoy the beautiful view of the Kennicott Glacier from the deck of the KGL. Overnight accommodations at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge. Day 2 Kennicott/McCarthy to Cordova and Prince William Sound Enjoy breakfast before a guided tour. Each tour varies but can include; exploring the Ghost town of Kennicott that was built by the Kennecott Copper Corporation between 1910 and 1920 and the site of the richest copper mine in the world. (An early misspelling made the mining company Kennecott.) Economic conditions forced the mine to shut down abruptly in 1938, leaving behind a 14-story mill power plant, refrigeration plant, an old school and a silent movie theater. Or the other popular option is a brief tour of the Mines while hiking to the Ruth glacier for hiking and adventure. Lunch along the way or at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge on return. Afternoon departure to McCarthy, tie permitting take a short walking tour of rustic McCarthy (McCarthy looks like an old abandoned Western Town, it’s very charming). Departure to Cordova following the Copper River, flying through the Chugach Moun- tains and over the Million Dollar Bridge. Continue to Cordova, the largest commercial fishing spot on Prince William Sound. Cordova originated as the port for the Kennicott Mines. We will refuel the aircraft here before continuing through Prince William Sound To Port Ashton located in the Southwest region of the sound. Look for eagles, whales and sea lions, sea otters and bears along the way. Dinner and overnight accommodations at Port Ashton Lodge. Private cabin/ private bath. Enjoy the salt water hot tub, a camp fire and the beautiful ocean scenery. Day 3 Port Ashton to Kenai Fjords National Park/ Homer After breakfast, we have the option to sea kayak with local guide Tristan along the beautiful shorelines of Evans Island in Prince William Sound. Mid morning departure flying through Kenai Fjords National Park and over many tidewater glaciers. Watch for seals, Killer Whales, Bald Eagles, salmon and sea birds as you trek through pristine, protected waters. Dramatic coastlines abound! Lunch along the way in a wilderness lake. Beachcombing. Our evening destination will be the town of Homer on Kachemak Bay and the Lands End Resort located at the end of the Homer Spit, a famous, four mile long gravel bar that separates Kachemak Bay from Cook Inlet. The Spit is large enough to hold the Homer boat harbor and a commercial fishing fleet as well as an eclectic collection of businesses ranging from seafood processors to boutique shops. The Spit is also famous for stunning scenery and as a collecting place for Bald Eagles. Dinner and overnight accommodations at Land’s End. Day 4 Homer to Katmai National Park/ Lake Illiamna After breakfast and refueling, we’ll be flying southwest to the Alaska Peninsula. This unique region boasts rugged landscapes and hundreds of miles of uninhabited coastline. Sky trek over the valley of 10,000 smokes then land on Naknek lake at Brooks Camp for brown bear viewing. At Brooks Falls many bears congregate to catch salmon traveling up the river to spawn in Brooks lake. Sometimes you may be with 20 bears. Bring your best camera for this day. It is truly an incredible sight! Continue towards lake Illiamna, Alaska’s largest lake, and the largest fresh water lake in North America connected to the sea. At 1,150 square miles, Iliamna helps support the largest sockeye salmon run in the world.. Dinner and overnight accommodations at a wilderness lodge. Day 5 Lake Illiamna to Lake Clark National Park and Anchorage Breakfast and departure mid morning towards Lake Clark, options of the day could be fishing, hiking, and enjoying a picnic lunch in the wilderness. The cabin of Dick Proenneke is a popular stop at Twin Lakes in Lake Clark National Park. It’s really a must see place. All who attend love it! Afternoon continuance through Lake Clark National Park and Preserve following the Tlikakia River into a narrow mountain pass, the landscape evolves into jagged, granite cliffs lined with hanging glaciers. Sky trek along a path of fire and ice as we pass glaciers on our left and the volcanoes Mt. Redoubt and Mt. Spur on our right. Arrive in Anchorage, your final destination. You will be accompanied by a pilot/guide and have full access to the aircraft in which you are traveling. All meals, air travel within the state, lodging, and equipment to include Orvis rod/reel combinations and terminal tackle, knee boots or waders, STA gear bag and hat, and activities listed in this written itinerary are included. Not Included: Airfare between your home and Alaska. Liquor, fishing licenses, and gratuities for Sky Trekking Alaska, guided tour and gratuity in Kennicott.
