Soothingly tranquil and surprisingly understated, The Nam Hai embodies Vietnam’s increasing popularity as
a luxury destination for discerning travellers looking for a quiet retreat beyond the usual hip and glam found in
other Asian destinations. Hugging the dramatic coastline of Central Vietnam, the oasis features an expansive 35
hectares of beautifully landscaped gardens dotted by 100 standalone villas, all reflecting the resort’s distinctive
melding of contemporary comforts with aesthetics inspired by traditional Vietnamese architecture.
The Nam Hai’s exquisite Pool Villas offer guests a choice between one-, two-, three-, four- and five-bedroom
accommodations, each with private butler service and perks such as daily buffet breakfast, afternoon tea service,
pre-dinner cocktails and more. Additionally, the resort features three separate swimming pools – all overlooking
beautiful Ha Ma Beach – two distinctive restaurants, a bar, an exquisite spa, a fitness centre, two tennis courts and
its very own organic vegetable garden.
With three UNESCO World Heritage Sites nearby, The Nam Hai presents the ultimate destination from which to
experience Vietnam’s rich cultural and culinary offerings.

some words..
As Publisher of The Luxury Traveler I have had the opportunity to visit many
locations and talk with people from all walks of life. I have frequented a
variety of businesses, visited museums and off-the-beaten-track locations, and
enjoyed many excellent restaurants. I have experienced the Maldives from the
air as well as below the sea, riding my bicycle along the single track in the
Mekong delta, crossing the Hai Van pass on a brand new Harley Davidson, island hopping around the beautiful Krabi islands, having late night dinners in La
Coruna small and ancients streets, playing golf at Royal Melbourne Golf Club
and The Capital. I would like share with you some of these places.
Vietnam has more than its fair share of beautiful luxury travel destinations
including Danang, Nha Trang, Halong Bay… However there are also plenty of
new destinations which are at least as spectacular such as Quy Nhon with its
deep blue seas and Lang Co with its tranquil lake and fabulous seafood.
As requested by our readers we have extended our section on exotic luxury
locations and hotels from around the world. We featured Hotel Cipriani
located on Giudecca Island,
a 5-minute boat ride from St.
Mark’s Square. This is one
of George Clooney’s favorite
hangouts. It is also where
James Bond docked his boat
in Casino Royale.
Finally I would like to say a big
thank you to the entire team
that produces this magazine
once a year. The same entire
team has been with us for the
past 5 years.

BANYAN TREE LĂNG CÔ
DEBUTS IN CENTRAL VIETNAM IN NOVEMBER 2012
Designed to offer absolute privacy and exclusivity, Banyan Tree Lăng Cô is nestled in a unique crescent bay framed
by a three kilometre beach on the Central Coast of Vietnam, an area renowned for its pristine coastline, tropical jungles, rugged mountain peaks and proximity to the country’s most storied UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including
the cities of Hue and Hoi An along with the relics of My Son. The resort is easily accessible within a 60 minute
car ride from Da Nang International airport, which is fed by Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh).
Inspired by the artistic heritage of Vietnamese dynasties past, the resort features 32 lagoon pool villas and 17
beach pool villas set on the shores of Canh Duong beach. The architecture and design of this stunning all-pool
villa resort pays contemporary tribute to the cultural richness of the region. Integrating clay tiled pitched roofs,
open courtyards and wood rafter ceilings, the main building and villas feature modern interpretations of design
elements seen in the traditional garden houses of Hue. Villa interiors are replete with traditional Vietnamese aesthetic themes. Lotus motifs, lacquer and silk embroidery in a neutral palette of earth tones and accents of regal
purple adorn fabrics, elegant furnishings, paintings and pottery. Natural materials such as bamboo, wicker, and
raffia (palm) ropes are used to create a setting that blend the resort into the lush green forests that surround it.

Bodrum, known as Halicarnassus in ancient times, dates back to before the
7th century BC. It fell to Alexander the Great who then had a tempestuous
affair with its fierce warrior queen, Ada. In ancient times, it was home to one
of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Mausoleum, of which, unfortunately, little remains today. Modern-day Bodrum is an enchanting town of white
houses that are draped in bougainvillea and rise tier upon tier against a green
hill overlooking a dazzling blue bay, which is guarded by the great medieval
Castle of St. Peter, built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 15th century.
The blissful and priviliged hideaway resort Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay on
the most heavenly and enchanting bay of Bodrum, is the unrivaled choice for
anyone who prefers luxurious comfort for their limited times of leisure and
de-stress all year around.
During a stay surrounded by the signature Kempinski luxury, guests can
enjoy the refined cuisines in the hotel’s restaurants such as; delicious
Turkish Aegean Buffet in ‘Olives’, modern fusion of Thai, Vietnamese, Bali
and Japanese cuisine in ‘Saigon Club’, light refreshments, cakes and
patisseries in ‘Gazebo Lounge Café’, refreshing beverages, snacks and
seafood & grilled meals all day long in ‘Barbarossa Beach & Grill’, delicious snacks and beverages either at ‘The Pool Restaurant and Bar’ or in
‘Bar Blue’, and delicious Italian tastes in ‘La Luce’ which serves at nights
as one of the most selective and trendy night clubs in Bodrum. In winter
as well, you can warm-up by the fireplace overlooking the crystal clear
waters of the Aegean, or enjoy the heated indoor pool, whirlpools and the
chill-out lounge, designed all for your comfort and pleasure.
Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay is home to the very exclusive award winning Six Senses Spa, with its 5.500 sqm area of use, assures a renewed
high-qualified well-being, through balancing your senses... Six Senses

Hotel Cipriani
World-renowned Hotel Cipriani feels more like a secluded island
resort than a hotel in a bustling urban center. Yet it is both.
In the 1950s, Giuseppe Cipriani.
The luxury Traveler

the circa-1950 rooms are, by Venetian standards, young.
The hotel was built in the 1950s as a summer getaway for the
well-heeled; it continues to be closed in the winter.
One of Venice’s most sumptuous dining rooms, the Fortuny
is adorned with delicately blown glass, lustrous silks and
amber-coloured mirrors. Magnificent views of the lagoon,
stretching as far as the eye can see, and architectural
touches reminiscent of St Mark’s domes, combine to create
the perfect setting for a relaxed candlelit dinner.
The Fortuny Restaurant has two expansive terraces bordering
the lagoon-the Fortuny and the Antique Terrace. Both are set
in lush, flower-filled gardens and can be reserved for special
events or private parties.
The property’s wine list is long, and predominantly regional,
Italian, and French. I drank a superb Merlot / Sangiovese blend
called 50&50 that hails from a vineyard in Chianti belonging to
James B. Sherwood, founder of Orient-Express Hotels, which
now owns the Cipriani.
orld-renowned Hotel Cipriani feels more like a secluded island resort
than a hotel in a bustling urban center. Yet it is both. In the 1950s,
Giuseppe Cipriani – who also invented the Bellini cocktail at his other
legendary establishment, Cipriani’s bar – decided to create a luxury
summer getaway away from the crowds of Venice proper, one that
would cater specifically to his royal and celebrity friends and clientele.
A private wooden boat ferries guests from the property, hidden away on the south side
of the spacious island of Giudecca, to San Marco Square and back. Although it is only
a five-minute ride from the sun- and tourist-beaten piazzas of Venice’s city center to the
manicured gardens and near-Olympic-sized pool of Cipriani, you will feel miles away.
In fact, when faced with such inviting grounds – the wellness center, tennis court, and
gourmet restaurant – some visitors, e.g. the European head of state staying in the opulent
Palladio Suite or the A-list actress sunning herself by the pool, never leave the property.
Most, however, will come and go, and will value the Cipriani for its contrast to the rest of
Venice, a city so developed that some of its streets are only a few feet wide. Pulling out into
the water, away from the Doge’s Palace after spending an afternoon touring it, anticipating
the serenity of the Cipriani and its genteel staff, guests can understand that a trip to Venice
can also be an island escape.
The décor in Hotel Cipriani's 79 rooms and suites is classic, soft, and above all else,
Venetian. The manager who showed me around described two of the colors in the
palette as “Titian red” and “Veronese green.”
Typically, hues are pastel - peach, lavender, blue - which pop when the rooms fill with
summer sunlight and contrast beautifully with the view of either the gardens or the lagoon.
Almost all guest rooms have a private balcony or terrace, including many of the standard doubles.
Most have been renovated recently; it’s worth requesting that yours be one of these, although

There are also a few dozen vines on the grounds, which eventually
return to the Cipriani in bottles called “Casanova Salso,” named for two
of Giudecca’s former mainstays: the famous bachelor, and vin salso, a
wine previously produced on the island. Herbs and various vegetables
are also grown on site.
The stylish and casual Cip’s Club, on the north side of the island with a
view of San Marco, is the hipper of the other dining options, which also
includes a poolside restaurant. Cip’s is popular with both guests and
locals. Score a seat on the terrace/dock jutting out onto the water. The
menu focuses on seasonal, local fare, and might include fried soft shell
crabs, cuttlefish, and beef carpaccio.
When it’s time to explore; if you can’t tackle Venice on your own, the
concierge will arrange a private tour of the city’s points of interest and
winding canals on Shirley, the Cipriani’s other wooden motorboat.
Alternately, you might explore Venetian cuisine with a cooking class. And
when all that learning stresses you out, the Casanova Wellness Centre is
ready to relax you both. The facility is clean, bright and airy, and pleasantly
fragrant. Its most beautiful appointment is the couples’ room, fitted with
two massage tables and a capacious basin for bath rituals.
If all of that sounds too healthy, heady, or heavy, you are always invited
to blow some dough in Cipriani’s shopping arcade, featuring local luxury
purveyors Pal Zileri and Al Duca D’Aosta, as well as Yves Saint Laurent,
Lanvin, and others.
A quick walk through the hotel’s neighboring property Palazzo Vendramin
will deposit you on the northwest end of Giudecca; the area is one of the
least trafficked sections in Venice. Therefore, it’s worth strolling the length of its
northern “fondamente” and peering down the alleys where locals live and/
or come to escape the tourists.
Excluding a few churches, however, and the women’s prison (where, interestingly, deluxe soaps are made for high-end hotels),
Venice’s sites are all further north. And anyway, the complementary boat service to San Marco is so fast that the famous, must-see
Basilica San Marco actually is the closest attraction.
From there, after also visiting the Doge’s Palace, you could either head north to the Jesuit Church and historic Jewish ghetto
in Cannaregio, cross the Rialto Bridge to see the Frari and get lost in the meandering calles of San Polo, cross the Accademia
Bridge and wander the college area of Dorsoduro looking for a slice and a spritz, or hop on a gondola or public-transport
vaporetto heading up the Grand Canal past the centuries-old palazzos of the rich and famous.
You can walk to any part of Venice from any other part of Venice - except to and from Giudecca. But, of course, the Cipriani has
you covered for the ride back.

NADESAR PALACE
VARANASI
Varanasi is sacred to Hindus. It is revered as the abode of
Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. It is immersed in an ancient
culture and history that few cities could lay claim to. Indeed, it
is widely believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited city
in the world.
For millennia, it has been a hub of philosophy, theosophy, medicine, learning and the arts - and it remains steeped in all of them.
It is the home of Sanskrit, Annie Besant’s Theosophical Society,
Asia’s largest university - ‘Benares Hindu University’, Sarnath
- the venue of The Buddha’s first sermon after enlightenment,
two thousand temples and the revered Ganges River.
Situated in one of the oldest living cities of the world, on the
banks of the river Ganges, Nadesar Palace has hosted royalty,
statesmen and celebrities since 1835. The name Nadesar is
derived from the Goddess Nadesari, whose shrine is located
in the front of the Palace. Set amidst verdant gardens, mango
orchards, marigold and jasmine fields, Nadesar Palace is a
haven of peace and tranquility.
Mark Twain once remarked about Varanasi that it is
“older than history, older even than legend, and looks
twice as old as all of them put together." With all the
eras it has lived through, first as Benares, and now in
its present avatar, the city seems to be enveloped in
its own divine aura.
standing before Mint House, there is no mention of it as late as 1787
and even 1803, during the visits of Lord Cornwallis and Lord Valentia
respectively. Surely, if the Palace had stood then, it would have been
chosen as the residence of these stately visitors.
Whenever it may have first been built, Nadesar Palace’s new heyday
arrived in the nineteenth century. James Prinsep – the architect –
was appointed Secretary of the Benares committee by the Bengal
Presidency. Along with mapping the city, widening the roads, and
creating the sewage system, Prinsep restored and refurbished the
Palace and Mint House to their modern stateliness.
The Palace was then taken over by Maharaja Prabhu Narain Singh during
his rule between 1889 -1931. Nadesar Palace was now his city residence,
and in which he entertained his guests with pomp and splendour.
The exact origins of the stately Palace as it stands today, remain
rather mysterious, however the patches of its history that are
known are very colourful indeed.
The Palace was named after the goddess Nadeshwari,
whose shrine stands on its grounds. When exactly the Palace took its place besides the temple, nobody will ever know.
However, circumstantial evidence indicates that in January of
1799, Mr. Davis, the then Magistrate of Benares was residing
in this building, which stands opposite the mint house. The
Magistrate gallantly defended himself and his family from the
attack of Wazir Ali, the deposed king of Awadh from within its
walls. The circular stair case atop which Mr.Davis positioned
himself still exists in the building.
The first visitors of note were the then Prince and Princess of Wales, who
later became King George V and Queen Mary. It has since played host
to, amongst others: King Reza Shah Pahlavi of Iran and Queen Sorraya,
King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, King
Mahendra Bikram Shah of Nepal, Lord Mountbatten, Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru-the first prime minister of independent India, Queen Elizabeth II &
His Holiness Dalai Lama.
Mint House was built by The East India Company in 1795, and,
though there are indications that the Palace may have been
Dining at the Nadesar Palace is an indulgent experience starting with
breakfast on the sun-kissed verandah; a spiritually inspired plated meal
at lunch in the dining room, and a barbeque dinner by the poolside.
Works of art from the Maharaja’s collection decorate the walls of the
Palace’s 10 luxurious suites. Embellished with original pieces of furniture refurbished to recreate the atmosphere of a bygone era, the
décor of the rooms is intended to evoke the colours of marigolds,
jasmines, and pale pink lotuses that are offered to the holy Ganges.
To unwind, the Palace offers a round of golf on the greens, a guided
nature walk or a day at the Jiva Spa. On offer at the Jiva Spa is a
signature treatment ‘Abhisheka’ inspired by time-honoured Indian
purifying rituals.
Named after the celebrities who stayed here as the Maharaja's
guests, each room and suite at the Palace draws inspiration from
the city, its culture and its timeless tradition.
Choose from four luxuriously appointed Palace Rooms, four Historical
Suites and two Royal Suites that have a living room, a master bedroom
and a dressing area.
Royal Suites offer a view of the beautiful landscaped gardens. Historical

HÔTEL DE RUSSIE INVITES ITS GUESTS INSIDE THE SECRET ARCHIVES OF THE VATICAN
Hôtel de Russie has partnered with Rome’s Capitoline Museums to
announce the most exciting museum display ever to be launched in
the history of Rome.
For the first time, the ‘Lux in Arcana’ exhibition, puts on display documents
from the Vatican Secret Archive buried beneath the Holy See. They shed
light not just on the powerful - and often nefarious - history of the Catholic
Church, but also on the history of Europe.
The documents describe the inquisition of Galileo Galilei, the case against
the Knights Templar and the order for Martin Luther’s excommunication.
Also on display is a parchment in Latin with the seal of 83 English Lords found hidden inside a chair in the Vatican in 1926 - seeking an annulment
for King Henry VIII so he could marry new flame Anne Boleyn. Henry's
failure to obtain Papal approval ultimately led to the Reformation in Britain.
The “Lux in Arcana” (translation from the Latin: "Light in the Archives")
exhibition at Capitoline Museums has been organized by the Vatican
to mark the 400th anniversary of the Archive, which was the subject of
Dan Brown's post-da Vinci Code blockbuster Angels and Demons. One
hundred documents have been selected from thousands covering the
8th to the 20th century.
Other fascinating items on display include the 1493 papal bull granting
Spain land discovered by Christopher Columbus and calling for the conversion of the indigenous people of the Americas; a bark letter from the chief of
a Native American tribe to Leo XIII expressing gratitude for the arrival of the
missionaries and an invoice from Michelangelo for work done.

modern luxury with authentic Sicilian motifs.
There are two 18-hole championship links-style golf courses and
a 9-hole, designed by leading architect Kyle Phillips; six tennis

fully-equipped gym and running trails which meander through the
olive and lemon groves. For those seeking deep relaxation the
4,000 square metre Verdura Spa is exceptional - it was recently
recognised as Best Hotel Spa 2012: Europe, Asia Minor and The
Russian Federation by the readers of Conde Nast Traveller.
Verdura Golf & Spa Resort is one of Europe's most exciting resort,
located on the south coast of Sicily near the seaside town of Sciacca.
Wining several prestigious awards since its opening in 2010, the luxury
resort offers discreet exclusivity that few places can match.
The largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily is as captivating as it is diverse. For centuries,
it has been at the crossroads of civilisations and each has left an indelible imprint on this
Italian region. Verdura is perfectly positioned to explore the island with many historical and
cultural sites situated close by.
Situated on a hidden stretch of Sicily’s sun-drenched shores, Verdura is lucky enough to have
1.8km of coastline. Walk down from your room to the beautiful pebble beach flanked with
grass areas leading right down to the beach.
Swim out on the azure waters, and you will have a clear view of the resort nestled into the
landscape, with the terracotta roofs and church towers of nearby Sciacca in the distance.
Guests can relax reading a book under a parasol on a sun-lounger, or enjoying the great range
of non-motorized water sports available, such as sailing, windsurfing and stand up paddling.
The resort's restaurants and bars, led by Michelin starred chef Fulvio

REFINED ELEGANCE AND BREATHTAKING VIEWS
Furnished in a fresh contemporary style that reflects the essence
of Sicily, the guest rooms at Verdura Golf & Spa Resort provide an
elegant and relaxing personal space. There are 203 in total, each
with its own uninterrupted view across the sparkling Mediterranean
Sea from a private terrace.
Set across 230 hectares of olive groves and countryside, the rooms
are in two distinct types of building, Courtyard and Landscape,
which are woven subtly into the landscape and offer a real sense
of privacy and space. Natural materials such as stone, sand, wood
and cane echo the traditional architecture of Sicily, and rooms
make imaginative use of both outdoor and indoor space.
Created by Olga Polizzi, The Rocco Forte Hotel’s Director of Design,
the interiors are beautifully appointed and encapsulate The Art of
Simple Luxury. She has used a rich palette of earth tones and bright
printed fabrics to reflect the character of Sicily, with a design motif
inspired by a classic Sicilian tile. Bedrooms feature four-poster
wooden beds, polished concrete floors and artful Italian lighting,
and are decorated with locally fired earthenware. The bathrooms
are naturally lit with stone vanity tops, and some have outside
courtyards with lemon trees.
GOLF COURSES
Sir Rocco Forte, a keen sportsman with a lifelong passion for golf,
was inspired to create his Hotels' first golf Resort. He appointed leading golf architect, Kyle Phillips, to create this golf centre master plan.
Phillips was honored to be entrusted with this unique opportunity to
set new standards for a links experience in a warmer climate than
the traditional British Coastal courses. Despite both tracks being built
to the same standard, and occupying similar ground, the East and
West courses provide alternate journeys for golfers to enjoy. Both
start beside an internal practice range, the West has a more out and
back arrangement with a long stretch of consecutive holes on the
front nine but a stirring four hole seaside finale. The East, by contrast,
enjoys a two loop routing that changes direction more frequently, its
18th hole is played right alongside the cliffs but the rest of the closing
stretch is set on higher, tumbling ground.
The Phillips routing is probably the highlight of the entire golfing component at Verdura.
The property enjoys nearly 2 kilometers of beach frontage and it would have been easy
to build one course along the coastline and have the other away from the sea. There was
plenty of natural undulation through the deceptively spacious interior, however, and Phillips
wisely chose to spread the best holes, and best terrain, across both courses, giving each a
tremendous seaside closing run and an exciting central area that touches the blue waters
of the Mediterranean. The resultant journey, which twice takes golfers to the sea and back
again, is richly rewarding here, particularly on the more diverse East Course.
THE ART OF SIMPLE WELL-BEING
Set amid fragrant, sun-kissed olive groves and gardens on the south-west coast of Sicily, Verdura
Spa is a retreat of unparalleled luxury and serenity from Rocco Forte Hotels, offering the latest in
wellbeing and fitness.
The Spa philosophy is centered on balancing the body and mind. Programs and treatments offer a
holistic approach to health, well-being and fitness; many are inspired by organic Sicilian ingredients
including fresh plant extracts and cold-pressed plant oils. Treatments are focused around the four
key areas of anti-ageing, detoxifying, fitness and thalassotherapy.

SINGAPORE NIGHTLIFE
With so many choices on offer, it's a difficult task deciding
what to do for an evening out in Singapore and to experience
its nightlife best.
S
ingapore is booming. Casinos and hotels have sprung up and
throughout the city, street vendors and sleek restaurants — new and wellestablished — serve up the city’s renowned mix of Malay, Chinese and
Indian ethnic cuisines. And, best of all, sexy lounges and rooftop bars are
everywhere.
THE CAN’T BE MISSED MARINA BAY SANDS
There are few better symbols of Singapore’s recent success than the
year-old Marina Bay Sands, a gargantuan, three-towered complex with
more than 2,500 rooms that looms over the city. Even if you aren’t staying
at the hotel or hitting the casino, a ticket costing 20 Singapore dollars
will provide access to the most impressive feature: SkyPark, an observation deck with 360-degree views. In one direction you’ll see the city’s
expansive harbor; in the other, its sparkling skyline. Entry also includes
a gander at what is billed as the world’s largest infinity pool, an architectural marvel that links the tops of the trio of towers.
In the Emily Hill complex, for example, a former colonial
estate has been transformed into a multi-use compound
that is home to artists’ studios and a theater school as well
as Wild Oats restaurant and bar where Singapore’s beautiful crowd convenes for drinks after dinner on a sprawling
terrace. In Chinatown, Ying Yang a black-and-white rooftop
bar at the new Club hotel on Ann Siang Road, has also
become a city hot spot.
Clarke Quay is the place for hardcore clubbers, where the
Ministry of Sound is based as well as a handful of hip new
dance clubs. There are other areas of the city that have become eclectic in their entertainment choices and live jazz,
acid jazz, international guest DJs and live music is easy
to come by. Sentosa has a number of cocktail bars on the
beach, and the Central Business District has plenty of chic
nightclubs. One of the largest and longest-running clubs is
the sprawling Zouk in Jiak Kim Street, which hosts visiting
international artists and has a variety of floors ranging from
house to hip hop, pop and even a dinner-dance area.

Mandarin Oriental
Bangkok
Home to Literary Greats
Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is famous for its legendary
relationships with internationally acclaimed authors
throughout it’s rich 135 year history. These relationships
have inspired the names of the suites honoring those
famous authors who have resided there.

The hotel is one of the oldest in Asia (1876)
and was the first hotel in Thailand.
Louis Thomas Leonowens, son of Anna
Leonowens (Anna and the King of Siam)
was once the hotel’s proprietor.
Legendary Thai silk tycoon Jim Thompson
was a one-time owner of the hotel along with
a group of business partners.
The hotel was voted “Best Hotel in the
World” by Institutional Investor for a recordbreaking consecutive ten years (1981-90).
In 2011 the hotel was voted “Best City Hotel
in Asia” by Travel + Leisure magazine and
came second in the world for city hotels.
All hotel guests are greeted upon arrival with
a traditional Thai flower hand garland.
The hotel has one of the highest staff to guest
room ration in the hotel industry (3 staff per
each guest room).
The Heritage Authors’ Suites are individually fashioned to showcase the personalities of four literary greats: Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, Noel
Coward and James Michener. These rooms are from the original 135 yearold structure overlooking the Chao Phraya River, and possess an Old World
elegance with the Victorian-style bathrooms and lush interior fashioned with
Thai silks and teakwood.
Joseph Conrad visited the hotel in 1888 when he was acting commander
of the ship the Otago. It was his first and only visit to Bangkok, as well as
first and only seagoing command. He did not actually register at the hotel,
but frequented the Bar during his stay.
Somerset Maugham first stayed in the original building in 1923 when he
arrived via train from Chiang Mai and returned in 1925. It was during this
time that he penned part of his novel “The Gentleman in the Parlor” where
he mentioned ‘The Oriental Hotel’. Maugham’s last visit was in 1960 when
he was 85 years-old.
The Authors’ Suites located in the River Wing Building further reflect the
identities of famous individuals: Barbara Cartland, Gore Vidal, Graham
Greene, Wilbur Smith, John le Carré, Norman Mailer, Jim Thompson and
Kukrit Pramoj. The latter was the former Prime Minister of Thailand in the
seventies, as well as a formidable author whose novel “The Four Reigns” is
regarded as a classic in contemporary Thai literature.
Continuing with the literary vein at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, the ‘Southeast Asian (S.E.A.) Write Awards’ were created in early 1979 to encourage
writers in the ASEAN countries and to bring recognition to the creative literary
talents of the region. Now in it’s 33rd year, the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is
proud to host the 2011 S.E.A Write Awards scheduled for 7 October with the
Awards Dinner graciously presided by Their Royal Highnesses Crown Price
Maha Vajiralongkorn and Princess Srirasm. Throughout the decades many
notable writers have been invited to act as keynote speaker for the literary
event: Paul Theroux, Norman Mailer, Iris Murdoch, Pico Iyer, Rita Dove and
Frederick Forsyth. This year Simon Winchester, OBE, a well-known British
writer, journalist and broadcaster, will be keynote speaker.
All suites at Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok
are individually decorated. No two suites
are alike. Even the flower arrangements,
decorative items and Thai silk bath robes
are all unique to each suite.
During the Christmas holiday season,
each suite has its own live Christmas
tree complete with ornaments that match
the décor of the suite.
The idea for the award emerged from the hotel’s incredible literary history and discussions with Thai Airways International Public Co., Ltd., and
the Italthai Group of Companies. His Highness Prince Prem Purachatra
is the Chairperson of the Organising Committee, supported by the ‘PEN
Club of Thailand’ as well as the ‘Writers’ Association of Thailand’. More
recently the Jim Thompson Foundation, Bangkok Public Co., Ltd. and
Thai Beverage Public Co., Ltd. joined the Organising Committee.

A short interview with Mr. Bernhard Bohnenberge
The President of Six Senses Resorts and Spas
W
orld famous Six Senses Resorts and Spas to open spa at Saigon Golf Country Club & Residences in An Phu, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).
SGCCR is not only known for the world-class golf & real estate assets, the
project is also proud to have famous international partners. Six Senses
Resorts and Spas is the world’s leader in resort and spa management. They
have partnered with SGCCR for its first city spa in Vietnam. Below is a short
interview with Mr. Bernhard Bohnenberger – The President of Six Senses
Resorts and Spa
"The other advantage of working with SGCCR is that
the project is very unique and I believe is among the
top in the region..."
Mr. Bernhard Bohnenberger
The President of Six Senses
Resorts and Spas
Q1. “Six Senses” is known for their luxury spas at luxury beach resorts in exotic locations.
Do you have many city based spas?
BB. Six Senses Resorts & Spas is a management company, which manages resorts under the
brand names Six Senses and Evason, plus Six Senses Spas. In all, Six Senses manages 9 resorts
and 29 spas in 20 countries around the world, with another 15 under construction or development, including the Six Senses Spa at Saigon Golf Country Club & Residences. For city spas we
have Six Senses Paris, Six Senses London, Six Senses at Hotel Arts Barcelona, Six Senses at
Penha Longa near Lisbon, Six Senses Kuwait, Six Senses Doha, Six Senses Macau, and are soon
to open in Muscat as well as in Switzerland.
Q2. Six Senses will have its first HCMC based spa at the Saigon Golf & Country Club Residences in An Phu, District 2. Can you please share with us why you chose this location?
BB. Six Senses have three wonderful and successful properties in Vietnam, one in Nha Trang, one in Ninh
Van Bay and the other in Con Dao. We have been looking for a suitable location to open a city based spa
in HCMC for a while. When we were presented with the location at SGCCR, we were very excited. HCMC
is a bustling city and we wanted a location which is central but at the same time offers lots of green space.
SGGCR in An Phu is ideal for us as it is only a few kilometers away from the downtown HCMC and yet
offers over 1million square meters of open green space.
The other advantage of working with SGCCR is that the project is very unique and I believe is among the
top in the region in terms of design and construction qualities. They have chosen some of the top designers for both the golf and real estate projects. I have personally known the developer for many years
and he has a proven track record of delivering high quality real estate projects that meets both local and
international demands.
Q3. What is the concept for the Six Senses Spa at HCMC?
BB. Six Senses Spas are open and spacious in design, utilizing the beautiful outdoors for Asian
style treatments and indoor treatment rooms for specialized and signature therapies.
Our aim is to offer our clients a new kind of spa experience, one that is truly holistic, tailor-made and
designed to rejuvenate and energize, and ultimately provide the knowledge, tools and support that
is required to create a better quality of life for all.
Offering an unrivalled range of treatments to choose from, our international spa professionals can advise
and guide you through your options of body and beauty care, mind and body balancing and juice and
herbal remedies.
Specifically for the Six Senses spa at SGCCR, we are planning a true urban oasis, an escape from
modern city life, just minutes away from the city centre. We shall deliver such by concentrating on
bringing nature and green views into the spa spaces and creating treatments and experiences
which no other spa operator is offering in the city or in Vietnam.

Amvox
BY JAEGER LECOULTRE
From time to time, there are collaborations between the worlds of luxury timepieces and of high-performance automobiles. Several great watch designers
have created watches in honor of racing drivers or cars, usually as limited
editions. This may seem an unlikely partnership, but it has certainly produced
some memorable and collectible watches.
The Amvox line from Jaeger LeCoultre Watches came out of collaboration with Aston Martin automobiles,
which moviegoers of a certain age will always remember as the creators of the classic James Bond cars. Not
surprisingly, the results were luxury timepieces that were as cool, beautiful and well built as the famed cars
combined with the timeless styling of Jaeger LeCoultre Watches. Before you could say, "Shaken, not stirred,"
these two design giants had created a line of high-action luxury timepieces that even the worthy Bond would
be proud to wear.
The Amvox design from Jaeger LeCoultre Watches uses a round and several
other concentric circles to draw your eyes to the center. The outermost circle has
numberless hourmarkers and minute markers. The ring inside has numerals of two
sizes, even numbers large and odd numbers small. Inside this is a smaller ring
controlling the alarm.
Notice how easy these dials are to read. The bright figures and bull's-eye pattern make
the face almost leap off your arm, and there's no way you could misread the time.

ASTON MARTIN V12
VANTAGE ROADSTER ROARS IN
The luxury Traveler
2012
97
A
Aston Martin is lifting the lid on an extreme new sports car with the
global debut of the V12 Vantage Roadster.
As with the front splitter, the carbon fibre rear diffuser is handmade to ensure the direction and consistency of the weave
and ensure the best possible finish.
The new sports car, available as a limited edition in selected
markets worldwide, immediately becomes the most potent example of the open-top Vantage range and mixes the breathtaking power of Aston Martin’s naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12
engine with the established thrills of Vantage Roadster driving
for what is an unforgettable sports car experience.
Inside, there are other distinguishing features that make the
new car stand out from its illustrious siblings in the sought-after
Aston Martin V8 Vantage and V12 Vantage line-up. Subtle additions such as the use of glass switches in the lower centre
stack elevate yet further the luxurious ambience in the V12
Vantage Roadster cabin.
The V12 Vantage Roadster’s 6.0-litre engine, mated as in the
Coupe to a six-speed manual gearbox, generates 517 PS at 6,500
rpm and a muscular 570 Nm of torque at 5,750 rpm. It has been
intelligently packaged into the Vantage Roadster’s compact form
to fully exploit the sports-orientated model’s ample natural agility.
While for those seeking the ultimate in V12 Vantage Roadster
personalisation, a package of interior trim comprising carbon
fibre facia and carbon fibre gearshift surround is available.
Unique to the V12 Vantage and new V12 Vantage Roadster
is tthe engine’s “Sport” mode button, which enables the
driver to select between two different powertrain modes.
The naturally-aspirated V12 provides high levels of power and
torque yet it delivers a flexible, refined driving experience illuminated with the potential for truly electrifying performance. The
0-62 mph sprint is dispatched in just 4.5 seconds* while this most
potent Aston Martin Roadster is capable of 190 mph*.
While the Roadster naturally shares much of the technical and
specification features of the V12 Vantage Coupe, some elements are redesigned to take account of the Roadster’s neat
packaging and engaging dynamics.
The V12 Vantage Roadster features a redesigned rear boot
lid and lower front air intake to maintain a level of dynamic
performance that’s fully in keeping with the V12 Coupe, while
there are also a number of unique chassis revisions. These
include a modified rear damper set-up, front and rear damper
valve tuning and a new rear spring design.
These changes, in conjunction with Aston Martin’s use of Pirelli
P Zero Corsa tyres, ensure the sports car delivers dramatic
straight-line performance as well as outstanding handling.
Styled to be as beautiful as it is potent, the new
Roadster boasts a number of eye-catching additions that underline its sporty characteristics.
Carbon fibre side strakes; a carbon fibre front
splitter and rear diffuser; carbon fibre mirror caps
and carbon fibre rear lamp infills – plus the new
forged alloy wheel design – should leave the
sports car cognoscenti in no doubt that this is a
truly exclusive Aston Martin.
At the rear, the boot lid on the V12 Vantage Roadster incorporates a more pronounced ‘flip’ to reduce rear lift and improve stability at high speeds.
The V12’s diffuser houses a large, centre-mounted
oil cooler and two large tail-pipe finishers.
Normal mode is the default from start-up and provides not
only a more relaxed throttle response but also a quieter,
more refined exhaust note. This creates a more progressive throttle response, suited to ‘everyday’ situations such
as when driving in heavy traffic.
Sport mode, meanwhile, is designed for use in more dynamic driving situations where sharper responses are required.
It has a number of tangible effects on the powertrain including a sharper throttle response, with the engine delivering
more torque during the early stages of throttle pedal travel.
Exhaust system bypass valves are also kept open for longer
to create a particularly sporty exhaust note.
Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer Dr Ulrich Bez said: “The
V12 Vantage models are, first and foremost, driver’s cars – inviting and fully rewarding the driver’s full involvement.
“The addition to our range of this exceptional new Roadster allows the driver and passenger to experience full ‘sensory overload’ thanks to its outstanding performance.”
He added: “I believe no other car in this class offers the
combination of the V12 Vantage Roadster’s prestige, sixspeed manual gearbox and the unique enjoyment that
driving a high performance convertible can deliver.”
Available to order in selected markets now, the new Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster is priced at £150,000 RRP in the UK.

The Vietnam hospitality is one of the fastest growing in the region and comes with it strong

The Mercedes-Benz luxury saloons are chosen by many top luxury hotels and resorts in
Vietnam for their premium transportation service. Beside the attractive image with luxury
eye-catching design, the Mercedes cars with top-of-the-line technology give passengers top
safety, superlative comfort and a total feeling of peace of mind, just like sitting in a luxurious
room of a five-star hotel.
Another reason why top hotels and resorts prefer the Mercedes-Benz fleet is the top after-sales
service, including training for drivers, warranty, maintenance and the fast availability of spare
parts offered by twelve Mercedes-Benz authorized dealers nationwide.
Ms. Celine Guyomarc’h, Melia Hanoi Manager said: “Luxury in hospitality industry today
is different from what it used to be. Guest needs have become more difficult to satisfy. We
believe that this Mercedes fleet will lift our service excellence to the next level.”
With Mercedes fleet, Melia Hanoi Hotel adds another “star” to its premium services
“The total cost of ownership a Mercedes-Benz fleet is reasonable. Mercedes is also well-known for its durability. Resale
value is higher compared to others. These are our long-term
values for this investment”. This hotel has just received the
fleet of E-Class for their VIP guests transportation service.
At the fleet handover of R-Class and Sprinter in April, Mr
Anthony Gain, General Manager of Hyatt Regency Danang
Resort and Spa said: "We are delighted to take delivery of the
second fleet of R-Class and Sprinter which will cater for the
needs of our discerning guests. The fleet of Mercedes-Benz
luxury cars supports keeping our position as one of the leaders
in the chart of the hospitality service standards in Vietnam and
comparing ourselves with world-class premier hotels.” In 2010,
the Park Hyatt Saigon was the first five-star hotel in Vietnam to
have such a big investment of five S-Class. It was considered
a start for a new level of high-class transportation to serve
international travelers. This fired the first shot in starting a new
trend to increase hotel services to satisfy customer demand.

Spas
& Gyms
Yoga has long been a traditional amenity at spas and retreat centers, but in recent years it has
spread to mainstream hotels, resorts and tour operators. Below is an except from the New York
Times on this subject.
“ Long popular at spas and retreat centers, yoga classes have been spreading to mainstream
hotels, resorts and tour operators over the last several years. As the ancient stretching and
meditation practice gained popularity, the travel industry began seeing dollar signs in sun
salutations. Soon, yoga classes were showing up on the on-demand channels in Hyatts and
Marriotts, and at the Kimpton hotel chain mats and straps were available to guests who asked.
Now, with yoga becoming so mainstream, properties from chain hotels to bed-and-breakfasts
are looking for new ways to incorporate it into their programs to pique guests’ interest and
reach their wallets.
“Yoga is becoming a must-have amenity,” on the order of Internet access, said Chekitan S. Dev, a
professor of marketing at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration. “Guests want to be
able to stress out and go on the Internet and check e-mail, and then take five minutes and do yoga.”
The InterContinental Montelucia Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Ariz., which contracted Mr. Romanelli’s
company to teach daily classes at the resort in September, is hosting a four-day Chocolate Sabbatical.
Hotels typically don’t track yoga as a separate revenue stream. Rather it’s often lumped into spa
services. In luxury hotels, for example, yoga classes are increasingly being offered through the
spa, often for a fee. “To have a spa can mean 5 to 10 percent incremental occupied rooms and
an even greater amount of incremental revenue as those guests tend to spend more than the
average guest,” said Bjorn Hanson, a hospitality professor at New York University.
Whatever the form, however, yoga seems to be here to stay. “We wouldn’t build a spa or gym
today without planning a space for an area where you can do yoga,” said Christopher W. Norton,
chairman of Four Seasons’ Global Spa Task Force. “It’s a very important component.”
Part of its staying power may have to do with its low overhead. “I’d say there’s a demand for
yoga,” said Niki Leondakis, chief operating officer at Kimpton Hotels. “It’s also something that’s
operationally easy to offer, relatively speaking. “It doesn’t require expensive gear or lots of space.
The beauty is in its simplicity.”
Top hotel chains are rushing to implement yoga programs

Ms. Mac Thuy Lien is the spa and yoga director at Natural Joint Stock Company. She currently manages 8 spas as
well as teaches yoga at Saigon Pearl, The Manor, Vincharm gym. She also works with hotels when there are celebrity
and VIP guests that would like a private yoga session.

Vietnam Golf & Country Club was the first 36 hole golf club in Vietnam.
Located 20km from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, accessible by highway
and inside a large 300 hectare woodland estate, which includes the Lakeview Villa residential complex. Some facilities include; swimming pools,
tennis courts, gymnasium, squash court, and an international restaurant.
VGCC has long been recognized as Vietnam’s premier golf club, and
was twice voted Runner up as Asia best golf course. In 2011VGCC
received another great honor when it was voted as Vietnam’s best customer service golfing venue.
The West course opened in 1994 and was designed by Taiwanese architect Chen King Shih. The following year the traditional style tree lined
woodland West course hosted the Vietnam open and again in 1997.
Six–time major champion Lee Trevino was invited to design the second (East) 18 hole course at VGCC, which was opened in late 1997.
With more generous fairways than the tighter West course, but equally
challenging, guarded by cleverly positioned bunkers, numerous lakes,
tricky elevated & undulating Bermuda greens. The Asian Tour revisited
Vietnam in 2008 and it was the East course that hosted the Vietnam
Hana Bank Masters on this occasion. Both courses are standard configuration par 72 layouts. Whichever course you decide to play, you will
leave with fond memories of the golf course and whole experience...

Located on the north-central coast and 108km north of
Danang, Hue is one of Vietnam’s most important historical
and cultural destinations. From the early 1900s until 1945,
Hue took over from Hanoi as the capital of Vietnam – and
is where the Nguyen Emperor dynasty lived, ruled and was
consequently buried.
Hue
The former Imperial City of Hue is now a UNESCO World
Culture Heritage Site. Situated along the Perfume River, Hue
boasts a 19th century Imperial complex,featuring a fortified
walled Citadel and within, an Imperial Enclosure and Forbidden Purple City (replicating Beijing’s Forbidden City).
Although much of this complex was destroyed during the
Vietnam / American War, the area has been undergoing
years of restoration. Key attractions here include Ngo Mon
Gate, the iconic 37m-high Flag Tower (Cot Co) and sacred
cannons, plus Thai Hoa Palace.
Hue has several royal tombs or mausoleums scattered along
the Perfume River valley and surrounding low-lying hills; hidden
for years, they are now open to the public. Some tombs, once
discovered, were mercilessly robbed of their artefacts by local
plunderers, whilst some have become overgrown and unkempt.
However, the three main tombs of Ming Mang, Khai Dinh and Tu
Duc are still very much intact and well-maintained.
Other attractions include the city market (Cho Dong Ba), where
you can buy one of Hue’s famous legacies, the conical poem
hat (non bai tho), several striking Chinese Assembly Halls,
many pagodas and temples, including the stunning Thien
Mu Pagoda along the river, plus the late-19th century garden
houses, the former residences of Mandarins.
Cultural legacies include Hue’s unique royal court music,
now recognised as a UNESCO World Intangible Heritage,
which can be enjoyed at traditional cultural performances in
town and Hue’s distinctive and renowned imperial cuisine.
Attractions further afield include the DMZ (former demilitarized zone during the Vietnam / American War) and Bach
Ma National Park.

Danang, gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage sites
of Hoi An and Hue, is now Vietnam’s hot high-end resort
destination.
World-class golf has come to Danang’s sand dunes: one designed by Greg Norman and
the other Colin Montgomerie.
There are over 30 luxury hotels and resorts already opened along the stretch on the Danang
coastal stretch with Hyatt Regency and Le Meridien resorts soon to be opened.
Such developments underpin the reason tourism operators believe Danang and the
central coast will soon be on the crest of a tourism wave that will put the region on the
map for many of Vietnam’s 5 million international visitors.
The city’s new international airport terminal, which opens this year and is expected to
attract direct flights from China, Japan and South Korea, will help. It is sorely needed.
The old airport terminal, reminiscent of 1950s Russia, provides an impression that
belies the region’s many man-made and natural attractions.
DA
NANG
A day trip by boat to the Cham Islands, named after the Indo-Malay Champa people
who occupied the area 1500 years ago, provides an insight into how much this region
has changed. Whereas a decade ago just a few hundred foreign tourists ventured to the
cluster of eight offshore islands each year, the number is expected to reach 125,000 by
2015, with diving and snorkeling the big attractions.

Hoi An
Formerly known as Faifo, the ancient riverside town of Hoi An was a major Silk
Road trading port from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Escaping the ravages of
weather and war, Hoi An boasts a still inhabited and exceptionally well-preserved
ancient quarter, characterised by a rich blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese
and European architectural influences – a legacy of the immigrant sea traders
who settled. One of the oldest towns in South-east Asia, Hoi An is now a UNESCO
World Cultural Heritage Site.
Its role as a river port may have long declined, but Hoi An, located in the
central provinces, is now undeniably one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist
destinations. With plenty to offer, the main draw card is a compact ancient
quarter running alongside the Thu Bon River. Most of Hoi An’s beautifully intact
monuments and attractions are concentrated here, including the 200 to 300year old Chinese Merchant Houses and Assembly Halls, colourful pagodas
and temples and 17th century Japanese Covered Bridge – the town’s official
emblem. The French Indochina legacy is evident with remnants of European
architecture everywhere, but especially along riverside Phan Boi Chau Street,
lined with low-rise, yellow pastel villas.
Other attractions include sunset sampan trips along the river, a bustling riverside
market, tailoring shops and superb local cuisine. Proximity to the sea and river
and a largely predominant fishing community means plenty of fresh fish and seafood; these and other dishes like local specialties Cau Lao are best enjoyed along
atmospheric Bach Dang Street – especially lovely at night.
Full Moon Night is celebrated every month on the 14th day of the lunar calendar:
for this one night only, Hoi An’s traditional charm is accentuated with motorised
vehicles, electric lights and appliances banned, plus old-style cultural performances and games performed in the streets – lit by a multitude of silk lanterns.
Just 4km from the historic quarter, the relatively underdeveloped Cua Dai Beach
makes a pleasant distraction, while 40km south of Hoi An lies Vietnam’s most important Cham complex, UNESCO World Heritage Site, My Son.

NHA TRANG
Nha Trang has been one of Vietnam’s top beach destinations for years, popular with both domestic and
international visitors – and easy to see why.
Located on the South-central coast, 441km north of Ho Chi Minh, Nha Trang city sits in what is officially
ranked as “One of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays,” containing a 7km beautiful sweep of municipal
beach backed by soaring mountains and coconut groves, azure seas dotted with off-shore islands and
Vietnam’s highest coral reef diversity. The abundant marine life and coral now comes under the Hon
Mun Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Nha Trang Bay, one of the world’s first four MPA’s – and Vietnam’s
first – admitted by the IUCN.
Numerous boat cruises explore the MPA and
islands, including glass bottom boats or snorkelling and scuba diving tours; Nha Trang has
the largest number and the most established
diving centres in Vietnam.
Dozens of accommodation choices range from
budget guesthouses and mini-hotels strung along
the seafront boulevard, to exclusive six-star resorts
frequented by international celebrities.
Nha Trang’s municipal beach is one of the
loveliest and well-tended stretches of beach
in Vietnam. Locals swarm on the golden sands
at sunrise and dusk to play football and exercise and a boardwalk running the entire
length of beach gets thronged with promenaders. Besides the beach, the city offers other
distractions, like the hill-top White Buddha
An Lam Ninh Van Bay
Statue, Alexandre Yersin Museum, Hon Chong
Promontory and pre-12th century Po Nagar
Cham Towers.
Of all Vietnam’s beach destinations, party capital
Nha Trang offers the liveliest nightlife and thanks
to its huge fishing community, is renowned for its
excellent seafood – best enjoyed freshly cooked
on the beach.
Located further north are the pristine white
sands of Doc Let Beach and Whale Island, the
latter offering crystal clear waters, excellent
snorkelling and diving and one solitary Robinson Crusoe-style resort. Although Nha Trang
boasts
endless sunny days, the rainy season
hits from mid - November to early January; with
diving visibility affected, some diving centres
close for the season.

PHAN THIET
S
ome 200km north of Ho Chi Minh, the seaside city of Phan Thiet gets largely
overshadowed by its neighbour, Mui Ne. However, Phan Thiet has some attractions in
its own right. Founded by the French Governor of Indochina in 1933 and now a thriving city, Phan Thiet is still essentially a picturesque fishing port – evident by its fleet of
brightly coloured fishing trawlers. Attractions include world-class seaside golfing, with
two 18-hole Links golf courses (one, designed by British golfer Nick Faldo) and the
8th century Po Shanu Cham Towers, built during the ancient Champa kingdom. Some
30km south, Ta Kou Nature Reserve houses the world’s second longest reclining Buddha, while Ke Ga Cape boasts Vietnam’s tallest lighthouse, built by the French in 1897.
Most visitors however, head for Mui Ne, a bay area 22km eastwards of Phan Thiet. Formerly a sleepy fishing community, in just over a decade, Mui Ne has emerged as Vietnam’s fastest growing beach destination and premier beach resort capital. The main
factors for its success are its proximity to Ho Chi Minh – making it a popular weekend
and holiday break for the Saigonese and ex-pats – and a micro-climate which boasts
Vietnam’s lowest rainfall and virtual guaranteed sunshine. Mui Ne’s lovely 16km stretch
of golden sand is lined with coconut palms and over a hundred low-rise accommodation
choices, ranging from five-star resorts to simple guesthouses. Additionally, with strong,
consistent cross-shore winds (especially from November to February), Mui Ne is fast
emerging as a kite-boarding and windsurfing Mecca in south-east Asia.
There are around a dozen kite-boarding schools, plus an annual two-day windsurfing
competition hosted here, the Vietnam Fun Cup, attracting international competitors.
Built purely as a new resort destination, besides the beach-life, there’s little to do in Mui
Ne – this is more a quiet destination for relaxation and “getting away from it all”. However,
for those seeking further distractions, surrounding points of interest include the Saharalike, spectacular Red Dunes for which Mui Ne is famed and further afield the White
Dunes– a series of lakes and dunes which offer great hiking and nature opportunities.

The spa itself is an 1,800-square-meter monument of design, reminiscent of a Moroccan sanctuary.
The pre-eminence of the spa is underscored by its situation on the property itself. Where other resorts
bury their spas in an out-of-the-way location, Princess d’Ân nam positioned its spa on the sea.
“It’s the best seat in the house,” said Beghin. “Usually, the visual experience of any spa treatment
is negligible. Here it’s overwhelming.”
Likewise, the resort’s gardens. Designed by Alan Carle, who also designed the ginger gardens in
Singapore’s Botanical Gardens, the grounds teem with more than 200 varieties of flowers, shrubs
and trees. In the heart of the resort is a ginger garden, a subtle echo of Carle’s renowned design
further south.
In addition to the private pools featured in the Princess and Empress villas, four common pools
enhance the resort’s oasis-like appeal. The emphasis on water is apropos: the Princess d’Ân nam
is located in the most dependably sunny region in Vietnam.
design with strong Chinese overtones. With steeply pitched
roofs that seem to hover above the villas, rubbled walls and
ornate lattice work, the architecture marries the traditional to
the contemporary and modern simplicity to imperial elegance.
“We didn’t want merely to create a resort that catered to a
clientele with the most exquisite taste,” said Beghin. “We
also wanted to make a statement with a resort that is relevant to the climate, the light and the ambiance of Ke Ga.”
Inside, Vincent Koh’s understated contemporary Vietnamese tropical design enhances the light-filled, airy ambiance.
Private plunge pools distinguish each of the Princess villas,
and a private lap pool spans the private compounds of each
of the four Empress villas.
All of the villas bring the outdoors in with al freso bathrooms, featuring rain showers and baths and sunken tubs.
The in-room amenities run from high-tech (plasma-screen
televisions and high-speed wireless environments) to hightouch (24-hour room service).
VIETNAM’S PRINCESS D’ÂN NAM
RESORT & SPA
DESIGNED BY TAN HOCK BENG, RESORT SETS UP AS ONE OF
VIETNAM’S MOST EXCLUSIVE PROPERTIES
Dining from the Princess d’Ân nam’s ever-changing menu involves four primary venues — the Dining
Room, the Terrace, the Lounge or the Villa — and two families of cuisine — a Vietnamese menu and
a European menu founded in France and Italy. The menu changes daily.
The property’s beach takes in a private bay that’s defined by an 1899-built
colonial French lighthouse to the north and a massive ridge of sand that curls
out to sea to the south.
The resort’s appeal extends well beyond the property itself, to the environs of a destination that
stands apart as a new destination within Vietnam. Excursions from the Princess d’Annam range
from the stately lighthouse just offshore to the eminence of Ta Cu, a nearby mountain where a
2-kilometer cable car system whisks visitors to a pagoda at top and a 49-meter long recumbent
Buddha, reputed to be the longest in Southeast Asia.
“This part of Vietnam was crying for a top-flight property, the likes of which you
rarely encounter between here and Bali,” said Jean-Philippe Beghin, the resort’s
general manager. “Now, the crying is over.”
However naturally impressive the surroundings, the resort is a landmark
tropical design, crafted by noted Singaporean architect Tan Hock Beng. The
resort is a testament to the architect’s craft of critical regionalism whereby
‘place’ matters.
Further afield lie the Ocean Dunes Golf Club, an award-winning 18-hole tracked designed by Nick Faldo,
as well as the red and white sand dunes of Mui Ne and Po Shanu, an ancient Cham tower complex.
Named for a 13th Century Vietnamese princess, the Princess d’Annam opens
with 57 units on a secluded bay 35 kilometers south of the provincial capital of
Phan Thiet.
The all-villa resort trades in three classes of accommodation, from the
75-square-meter Mandarin villa to the 100-square-meter Princess and the
185-square-meter, two-story Empress.
The Princess d’Ân nam joins a select few properties in Vietnam that woo guests
who pay four-figure room nights as a matter of course, that makes a bold design statement with its architecture and that trades on a stunning oceanfront
location.
The rack rates at the resort begin at $465 per night, and climb into four figures for a major class
of accommodation. Princess d’Annam is one of just three resorts in Vietnam that cater to the ultra
high-end market.
The resort’s design appeal is founded in Tan Hock Beng’s interpretation of a colonial French villa

F
or those nostalgic about the true old South East
Asia island scene which no longer exists in countries
more most of the region should try Phu Quoc. This is
definitely one of Asia’s last remaining treasure gems.
The island which is the size of Singapore is located
in the Gulf of Thailand 115km from Rach Gia or 1
hour’s flight from Saigon.
Phu Quoc is blessed with over a dozen coves and
beaches, some with beautiful yellow sand and
others with pure white sand and turquoise water.
The 99 mountain peaks runs along the length of
Phu Quoc.
The island is typically characterized by four main areas: Duong Dong, South, North West and North East.
Much of the island is linked by red dirt road which is
mostly accessible by car. However arguably the best
way around the island is by motorbike.
PHU QUOC ISLAND
DUONG DONG
The main city center is located at Duong Dong which is only 10 minutes away from the airport. This
is also where many of the island’s popular resorts are located. Some of the island’s popular resorts
in this area include: La Veranda, Saigon Phu Quoc…
Visitors staying in this side of the island will experience something which is quite rare in Vietnam
: sunset on the beach. Vietnam’s coast line run along the eastern sea so watching sunrise on the
beach is much more common than sunset.
South of Duong Dong town is Long Beach or Bai Truong. This is destined to be the island’s next
major tourist development area. It is also where the famous Australian run pearl farm is located. And
yes, you can buy your pearl right there if you bring enough money.
Chensea Resort
PHU QUOC SOUTH
Going past Bai Truong all the way to the South East side of the island is the
famous Sao Beach. The beach here is comparable to any of the region’s top
beaches. The squeaky, fine, white sand, turquoise water is what this beach is
famous for. Surprising there isn’t any accommodation yet at Bai Sao. However
there is a very good restaurant right on the beach - My Lan. Since it is one of
the very few establishments in this area it is usually quite busy with local an
international tour groups.
Another attraction in the southern part of Phu Quoc are the tiny An Thoi Islands. There
are many fishing and snorkeling tours which organize day trips to these 15 islands.
Mango Bay Resort
NORTH WEST
The North West is a spectacular part of Phu Quoc which has been overlooked until recently.
The beautiful Mango Bay resort is located at Ong Lang beach which is about 10km north of
Duong Dong village.
Further north is Cua Can beach which is another spectacular beach in this area. The next
beach along the coast is Dai Beach which is almost deserted for now. Further north is Cape
Ganh Dau. Here you will find “Quan Gio” restaurant. This is a great place for seafood with a
great view of the sea. The beach here even has live coral for those keen to do some snorkeling.
NORTH EAST
The North East of Phu Quoc is characterized by several beautiful beaches, waterfalls
and jungles.
Ham Ninh is a small fishing village located east of Ham Ninh. There are a few great
seafood places at Ham Ninh.
Bai Thom is a rarely visited beach in the far north east part of Phu Quoc.

Da Lat
Located 297km north-east of Ho Chi Minh and nestled in the
south-central Highlands, Dalat was a favourite retreat for the
French colonials during Indochina. With a temperate climate and
1,500m above sea level, this former French hill-station was (and still
is) a welcome break from Ho Chi Minh’s sweltering heat, while scenic
waterfalls, lakes and pine-forested hills reminded the colonials of
home – referring to it as “Le Petit Paris”.
Founded in 1893 by Louis Pasteur’s protégé, fellow French compatriot
Dr. Alexandre Yersin, with scant major developments, the Frenchlegacy
is still evident in Dalat, with well-preserved colonial architecture – some
of the loveliest and most intact standing in Vietnam. These comprise
hundreds of architecturally unique, pastel-hued villas dotted amongst
the pine trees – many now being restored to their former glory – plus
historic edifices like Emperor Bai Dai’s Summer Palace, city railway
station and Dalat Palace Hotel. The French influence also extends
to Dalat’s current role as Indochina’s premier market garden centre,
producing organic, cool climate produce in abundance, available at
the sprawling Central Market in the city centre.
With its time-warp charm and romantic ambience, Dalat is also known
as the “City of Eternal Spring”, and is Vietnam’s leading honeymoon
destination for domestic tourists, appreciating the flower gardens,
swan boats on Xuan Huong Lake and “Valley of Love”. Dalat has several
striking pagodas, including Lam Ty Ni, Tuyen Lam and Linh Son and the
surrounding highlands offer many outdoor pursuits and activities – these
include hiking, canyoning, mountain-biking, bird watching and motorbike
trips out to coffee and tea plantations. City tours in vintage Citroën cars,
or by old-style horse-drawn carriages, are also available.
Golf enthusiasts will appreciate the historic Dalat Palace Golf Club.
A member of “The Finest Golf Clubs of the World” and one of Asia’s
most beautiful and oldest courses, this championship 18-hole course
was created in 1922 for an Emperor. It’s also south-east Asia’s only bent
grass golf course.

THE RISE OF
AROMA MARKETING
"How scents are helping luxury hotels around the world build customer loyalty"
The world of marketing incorporates everything from glossy posters and
elaborate window displays to thumping music, all of which are designed to
arouse our senses. And when it comes to food, taste tests are a tried-and-true
method for converting browsers to buyers.
But what about our sense of smell? Continually seeking new ways to transform
consumer wants into needs, marketers are exploring a new avenue: scent.
Although not a recent phenomenon – Coco Chanel is believed, back in 1921,
to have ordered the salesladies at her Parisian boutique to spritz stores with
her now-famous No. 5 fragrance to lure customers through the doors – scent
marketing has only lately taken off as an industry.
Lead by the nose
Alex Cosic is the national sales manager for international scent marketing
company Air Aroma. He says the dramatic move towards online shopping
means only one thing for brands: the renewed need for a competitive edge.
Enlisted by Qantas in 2010 to design the green tea-based fragrance used in
its business lounges, Cosic has no doubt scent marketing will be vital to the
future growth of brands that are in the business of selling.
How does it work?
•
Scent can be delivered via dry-air technology that releases fragrance
without sprays, aerosols or heated oils, or via miniscule particles dispersed
with cold air diffusers through the building’s air conditioning system.
•
The oil, created by professional perfumers, is not heated to ensure
consistent diffusion.
•
The cost to scent a mid-sized hotel that diffuses for 18 hours each
day is about $200-$300 per month.
The power of aroma marketing
Physically, our sense of smell differs on a very basic level because it can’t
easily be switched off – you can close your eyes or block your ears, but it is
very difficult to stop breathing in the air around you.
On a neurological level, the sense of smell – also known as the olfactory
system – shares a pathway in the brain that is closely associated with the
limbic system, which is responsible for emotions, memories and moods.
Smell affects the limbic system before it reaches the part of the brain
responsible for noticing and identifying the scent. It’s the only one of our
senses that does this.
Humans take an average of 20,000 breaths every day. To a scent marketer,
each one presents a potential opportunity to forge a connection between a
consumer and a product or environment.
Sofitel scenting its hotels together with Air Aroma
Iconic 5 star hotel Sofitel, appoints Air Aroma as its fragrance supplier. Sofitel
luxury hotels strive to blend their French origins with the best local cultures

The use of Air Aroma’s scent machine Ecoscent has allowed Sofitel to scent
the large 4000m3+ reception area of the hotel with only four diffusers (competitors system required 6 diffusers). The result is a consistent and appealing
aroma that is ‘Magnifique’.
