Aiken Spring Classic Masters

It was a race against the clock and a race against the encroaching weather for our $25,000 Aiken Spring Classic Grand
Prix on Sunday, sponsored by Dietrich Insurance Company. The horses were jumping great on the grass Grand Prix
Field and 8 out of the 15 went clear in the first round, that ran alongside the Responder Round-Up, the Sunday Benefit
Brunch to support the Aiken County Honor Park.
The rain held off and the first two riders in the jump off were clear when Penny Brennan came in with her first of two
entries qualified. Japan galloped around the field with a last sprint to the final fence, a healthy triple bar, by the Aiken
Classic Club to post the fastest time, two seconds faster than anyone else at that point in the jump off. She came back
with Sun Tzu next to last and almost caught her own time, but ended up a second off the pace. The class finished with
Penny Brennan taking the top two spots with Japan and Sun Tzu and Angel Karolyi ended up third and fourth with
McLain Ward’s Wings and Raylyn Farms’ Venus.
Penny Brennan had this to say: “Riding the Grand Prix field was excellent considering the rain we have had all week.
The turf helf up to be safe for all horses and riders. The Grand Prix course was a pleasure to ride, very inviting and
smooth. It was a tough class with great professional riders. The jumps were big enough and careful yet fair and
honest. The horse race was on. I truly enjoyed the level of competition and the great footing while competing at the
Aiken Spring Classic. The management is very professional and friendly.”
