A proud father was showing a
fellow worker a picture of his
five grown sons. His friend
asked what they did for a
living. The father said the
older two are doctors and the
youngest two are lawyers.
The friend asked about the
middle son and the father
said, “Oh, he’s a plumber.
Someone had to pay for all
the others’ educations.”
FROM THE E.O.
If you believe the rhetoric after the recent elevation of Malcolm Turnbull to Prime
Minister, then a boost in business confidence should be just around the corner.
Turnbull’s profile as a leader with both business experience and communication skills,
will we hope, give business the confidence it needs to tackle the many things ailing in
our current economy.
The latest ANZ/Morgan Stanley consumer sentiment survey found that before the
demise of Abbott, consumers were more pessimistic than at the height of the global
financial crisis. The management of our economy has long been a source of
unhappiness for many Australians whose apathy and lack of confidence could be easily
understood.
The Prime Minister’s selection of Scott Morrison as Treasurer is pivotal to his new
‘’21st Century Liberal Party.” Morrison has a track record of getting things done and it
will be interesting to see if he can lift business confidence while reforming areas such
as taxation, superannuation and the GST. After it is all said and done, confidence starts
at the top. The following final segment gives you as a business owner the tools to help
you increase your own BUSINESS CONFIDENCE.
THE DANCE OF CONFIDENCE (Part Two by Ray Hodge)
Here are some thoughts for living in or acquiring confidence.


Understand your strengths and operate in them as much as possible.
List your successes and accomplishments that you have achieved in any area of
life - whether from last year, this month or today. Keep a growing list as a
reminder.
Ensure you have people around you who are encouragers and supporters.
Some, in order to boost their own confidence can invariably denigrate you.
Communicate directly to them that this is unacceptable and if they don't change,
remove them from your relational sphere or minimise contact.
Constantly be challenging yourself in activities that will stretch you. The
accomplishment of small feats lead to greater ones. The confidence from
acquiring and mastery of new skills cannot be underestimated.
Focusing on what we have done well today boosts our confidence for tomorrow.
Get control of your world. When we feel in control we feel increasingly confident.
Reward yourself for small accomplishments. Whether a walk in the park, a coffee,
new item purchase etc.
Review the past. The baggage we carry today (the positive and negative) are the
bags we have collected from our yesterdays. Seek to locate the negative
contributions to your world and discard.
Confidence is from the inside out. Confident people walk and talk more
authoritatively and assertively. The internal affecting the external.
Seek help. Therapists and counsellors can be really helpful as sounding boards both in the tough and good times.
What are the things that you want to achieve and grow into – to master, to conquer?
Choose one area and then day by day practice the skills necessary. It will give you
mastery over the subject and the confidence to increasingly progress forward.
The safety of the bar does not compare to the thrill of the dance floor!

Budget Changes
(The following proposals were announced in the 2015 Federal Budget)
Accelerated Depreciation – All small businesses (less than $2 million turnover) are eligible
to receive an immediate tax deduction for any individual asset purchases that are less than
$20,000. This replaces the current threshold of $1,000. Both new and second hand items
are eligible for this tax deduction with a small number of exclusions (e.g. Horticultural
plants, Building improvements, Software) The general pool value threshold will also be
changed.
You will become eligible to claim an immediate deduction if the balance of the pool is less
than $20,000 at the end of the financial year. These arrangements commence from
7.30pm 12 May 2015 and will continue until the end of June 2017. From 1 July 2017 the
threshold for the immediate deduction will revert to $1,000.
Capital Gains Tax Relief – From 1 July 2016 relief will be available to small businesses with
capital gains liabilities arising from the alteration of their business structure.
Immediate Business Start-Up Costs Deduction – An immediate deduction will be available
for professional fees associated with business start-up costs (e.g. legal and accounting
fees). This replaces the current rule which allows for the deduction of these expenses over
5 years.
Work Related Car Expenses – The government has announced that from 1 July 2015 the
‘12% of original value method’ and the ‘one-third of actual expenses method’ will be removed. Also from 1 July 2016 the ‘cents per kilometre method’ will have one set rate of 66
cents per kilometre regardless of engine size. This will replace the three current rates that
are set based on engine size. The ‘log book method’ will remain the same.
Small Business Tax Cuts – The Government has advised that they intend to reduce the
company tax rate by 1.5% to 28.5%.
The 30% maximum franking credit rate for a distribution will remain unchanged.
The Government will also provide a 5% tax discount to unincorporated businesses (i.e.
Trusts, Partnerships & Sole Trades) with annual turnover of less than $2 million from 1 July
2015.
Fringe Benefits Tax – The current exemption for portable electronic devices used primarily
for work purposes will be expanded from 1 April 2016.
The four rates used in the statutory formula method for determining the taxable value of
car fringe benefits have been replaced with a single statutory rate of
20% for fringe benefits.

TENDER THOUGHTS FROM PEARL WATLEY MITCHELL
Plumber's Prayer
Lord, Install in me the faucets of your love,
like a never-ending fountain, bubbling,
with the Sweetness of life.
Pipe in the empathy of The Son,
and put a pop-off valve on unvented anger.
Lay the foundation for Your ministry,
and cast the image of the Father into my bones.
Rod out the sewer of my emotions
and remove the trash from my lifelines.
Build in me the temple of the Spirit,
and sanctify the closet of my prayers,
So that Your will showers my very being,
Your love causes me not to sink,
and my name is written
in your short-order book
for life.
