Thank you for volunteering to serve as Team Captain for the 2016 Komen Ozark Race for the Cure. Without your
team’s support, our promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever would not be possible. Whether you’re
a Team Captain veteran or this is your first year, your efforts and leadership are so important in our Race against
breast cancer.
This guide will provide you with all the information you need to build a team and, more importantly, set up and
hopefully exceed your 2016 Komen Ozark fundraising goals. Whether it's a bake sale or selling pink ribbons in

The Komen Ozark Team
OUR VISION
The Komen Ozark Affiliate plays a special role in the promise of creating a world without breast cancer. Our vision
is for every person to have access to breast health education and breast cancer screening, treatment, and support.
We believe that the decision to live or die from breast cancer should not be dictated by your ability to pay nor
where you live.
Since the inception in 1998, the Ozark Affiliate has awarded over $9 million to local organizations to provide
health services to uninsured and underinsured men and women in our 10 county service area. In addition to the
$9 million funded locally, nearly $3 million has been invested in Komen National's research and awards program in
search of finding the cures. That means Komen Ozark has invested over $12 Million to end breast cancer forever!

Remove this list and post it somewhere you will see everyday.
Be sure to check off your accomplishments!
Set a recruitment goal. We recommend having at least 10 members to a team, or if you're a
corporate team, 20% of your workforce.
Host a team kickoff meeting. Ask Komen Ozark about providing a presentation to help energize your
team's fundraising efforts!
Personalize your Participant Center. Don't Believe it makes a difference? Think again! Last year, our
fundraisers who updated their personal pages raised on average $165 more than those who didn't. To
log-in to your Participant Center:
• Click on the Race for the Cure under the event tab at komenozark.org
• Select the button that says Participant Center.
• This will bring you to the log-in page where you will enter your User Name and Password.
• You will be directed to your very own Participant Center, customized to you. This is where you will
be able to edit your Personal Web Page, send out emails and easily track you and your teammates
fundraising success.
Send emails from your Participant Center. Log in to recruit and manage team members, request
donations and download fundraising resources. Use our prepared email templates or create your
own!
Fundraise from your Facebook page. Download the Boundless Fundraising application to Facebook
to get your friends and fans in on the action! Social media is a great tool in recruiting team members,
donors and sharing your successes for Race.
Display event materials. Raise awareness in your office, neighborhood, campus and other hightraffic
areas to generate new team members or donations! Download printable team posters from our team
page by visiting komenozark.org.
Ask your human resources department about your company's Matching Gift Program. Be sure to
have each of your team members do the same. This is an easy way to double your donations!
Share communication from our Affiliate. As a team captain we rely on you to share all communications you receive from us with your team.
Invite Komen Ozark to host a kickoff at your place of work. Use this opportunity to educate your
co-workers about the impact your team is making by fundraising to support breast health locally.

WHERE DO I START
FUNDRAISING TIPS
Fundraising should be fun not feared! Share these tips with your team members to empower them to achieve their
individual goals:

Everyone is a potential donor.
Ask people that you have daily contact with or who you have an established relationship with. First start with the person you think will give the largest donation to establish a high baseline of giving.
Power of 10 - Ask 10 people to donate $10 on behalf of your team.
Be sure to use your emails in your participant center! These are already completed for you, just plug in your personal information and send to family and friends.
TEAM FUNDRAISERS
Putting together team fundraisers is a great way to engage all team members to raise funds and have fun doing it!
Increase your impact by keeping costs low. As you read through these ideas and create your own, think of possible
items that can be donated or local businesses that could sponsor your team or event.

Percent of Sales. Ask local merchants or restaurants if they will donate a percentage of their sales on a specific day to your Race team.
Casual Day. Sell special “Casual for the Cure” stickers which will allow employees to dress casual for a
specific day. Same idea works great for “Flip-Flop Friday” too.
Cover Charge at Local Venue. See if a local venue would be willing to have a cover charge for a particular night to benefit your Race team.
Sports Event/Tournament. Mini-golf, tennis, bowl-a-thon, dance-a-thon, aerobics or other sports can all be set up as events or tournaments with all proceeds going towards your Race team. Keep the cost low by utilizing a gaming system like Wii, PS3 or XBOX.
Cook Off or Bake Sale. Ask your friends, family and co-workers to show off their cooking talents
and donate treats for a lunch sale! Host the event at work, in your neighborhood, your localmarket or church.
Car Wash. Consider selling tickets for your car wash so you can have an idea of how many people will come to your car wash.
Loose Change Challenge. Challenge departments at work to collect loose change and the department that wins gets a special prize...maybe a pizza party or casual day.
Pink Ribbons. Sell Pink Ribbons (provided by Komen Ozark) for $1 to display around your office or business to show support.
ADDITIONAL TIPS
Brainstorm with your team. Be creative and think of things that can involve the entire group. Advertise your
participation as much as possible and just ask people! Too often people just don’t know how to get involved.
The more excitement you create, the more people will want to be a part of it. If you are having fun, your team will

Pink Warrior
Our Pink Warriors are an elite group of top fundraisers that possess
a fighting spirit to find a cure for breast cancer. This is a competitive
and exclusive honor given to our top performing individuals. They will
be asked to wear their "badge" of honor to show off their hard work
with their honor roll being announced at the Promise Circle Luncheon.
The top 25 fundraisers will gain the status of Pink Warrior and receive
special incentives and recognition.
150 Club
The average cost of a mammogram is $150, the "150 Club" are the first
150 individuals that raise $150 or more. Those in the 150 Club will be
awarded a special recognition, so join the Club!
Fundraising Incentive Program
Our top individual fundraisers will receive a prize package for
American Airlines or American Eagle.

Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 largest teams.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
As a team captain, you play a critical role in our success. Each year, Komen Ozark receives grant request
from organizations that provide breast health resources for uninsured and underinsured residents in our 10
county service area. Thanks to efforts such as your fundraising, we have been able to invest over $9 million
in the local communities since our founding in 1998.
This year, we received request for almost $1 million and we need your help more than ever! Without our
teams, our ability to provide critical services would suffer, and so would the innocent victims of breast
cancer.
1:8 women in america will be diagnosed with breast
cancer in her lifetime.
36 breast cancers were diagnosed using Komen Ozark
funding in 2015.
429 new people are expected to be diagnosed with
breast cancer in 2016 in our 10 counties.
97 people are expected to die from breast cancer in 2106
in our 10 county service area

MEET OUR SURVIVORS
Meet Alyssa Holder, her wish is simple – to see her boys grow up. At the age of 28, Alyssa felt
a lump. Not having insurance at the time, Alyssa went to the
Health Department to get the lump checked out.
“The doctor that I saw at the Health Department said
‘better safe than sorry, I think you should go ahead and get
a mammogram.’ She sent me with the number of the Ozark
Affiliate which led to my mammogram.” After her mammogram, Alyssa and her husband Zac received devastating and
life-changing news. Alyssa had breast cancer. “When I was
diagnosed it was the day after our oldest son’s 6th birthday, so
my main concern was fear of not getting to see the boys grow
up.”
Without the support of loyal partners like you, Alyssa’s story could have had a much
different outcome.
“Anytime I tried to think all this has happened and it is so terrible, I remembered how
lucky my story has played out because not a lot of people have the same ending.”
Alyssa’s story is more common than you think. She represents the one woman in the Komen Ozark service area
diagnosed with breast cancer each day -- 429 will be diagnosed with breast cancer in our local service area this year
alone. She could be you, your sister, your mother, your daughter or your friend.
P.S. Today after a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiation treatments – Alyssa has good news to report “I am cancer free. It’s amazing.”
Aracely Falcon is a wife and mother of two and at 37 years old found a suspicious sizable lump on her right breast, and
knew to see the doctor. After several screenings, the doctor told her that the results
came out positive. At that time the patient navigator interpreted in detail everything in
Spanish.
Aracely believed that she was very blessed to have found someone that provided her
education about breast cancer in Spanish. They also helped her navigate through the
medical system and get connected with other programs that help women with breast
cancer. These programs are all supported by monetary funds from Komen Ozark.
“When this disease comes to you, you not only worry about your own life, you worry
about your family, your children and all the treatment expenses that come with all of
this”.
“Susan G. Komen Ozark is doing so much for us, for us the women in Northwest
Arkansas. With the organization’s support, many lives have been saved, and I want
everyone to know about it”.
