UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP
PRESENTED BY SHIMANO
A BRIEF RUNDOWN
The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup has a long, colourful history and enjoys a solid following throughout the world. Over
the years, the UCI has modified the format and introduced new initiatives in order to keep up with evolving trends and
meet the expectations of athletes and fans.
EVOLUTION OF THE UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP
1991:
2002 - 2011:
It was 23 years ago that two American riders, John Tomac and Sara Ballantyne, became the first winners of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. The
year was 1991, and the World Cup series comprised nine rounds in seven
countries, catering for Cross-country Olympic (XCO) specialists only.
After four years on the programme, the dual slalom was replaced by fourcross (4X) in which four riders race against each other on a single course.
Winner of three of the four dual-slalom World Cups, Brian Lopes went on
to dominate the first year of four-cross. In the women’s competition victory
went to France’s Anne-Caroline Chausson, already winner of the dual-slalom
in 2000.
1993:
Two years later the downhill (DHI) format joined the programme, crowning
two German athletes this time: Jürgen Beneke and Regina Stiefl. Interestingly, John Tomac, XCO winner in 1991, took second place in the inaugural
downhill World Cup as well as second in the XCO.
1998 - 2001:
1998 was the year that the dual slalom – the forerunner of four-cross – made
its debut in the World Cup. Dual slalom involved knock-out heats with two
riders racing on parallel courses, and it featured in the World Cup for four
years. American Brian Lopes and Australian Katrina Miller won the overall
classification the first year.
MEDIA GUIDE
2012:
The Cross-country Eliminator is the latest mountain bike format to join the
UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. This spectacular format suited to XCO specialists sees four competitors race each other over a lap of around 1km. Introduced into the World Cup with three events in 2012, the Eliminator rounds
increased in number to five last year with the first overall classifications going
to Austria’s Daniel Federspiel and Sweden’s Alexandra Engen.

UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP
PRESENTED BY SHIMANO
UCI ELITE MOUNTAIN BIKE TEAMS
BEST EVENTS
In 2011, the UCI introduced a higher tier of mountain bike teams, UCI ELITE
Mountain Bike Teams. Invitations to receive this label go to the 15 top endurance (XCO and XCE) teams and the 15 top gravity (downhill) teams of a special ranking established at the end of the previous season by adding up the
UCI points of the best riders within each team.
The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup rewards not only the best athletes but
also the best organisers. Each year, UCI Mountain Bike Teams, media, sponsors, and UCI officials vote for the top events for each of the three formats:
currently cross-country, downhill and eliminator. This creates healthy competition between the organisers and encourages them to stage events of the
highest quality.
These teams benefit from numerous advantages: notably free entry to UCI
Mountain Bike World Cup events and free entry for all races on the UCI
Mountain Bike International Calendar. In return, they are obliged to enter at
least one rider in all rounds of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by
Shimano and to display the UCI ELITE Mountain Bike Team logo on their race
outfits and team vehicles.
Two of last year’s “best events” are again on the calendar in 2014: Fort William (GBR) for Downhill, and Nové Město Na Moravě (CZE) for XCO and XCE.
The competition was so close last year that the Czech venue shared first
place with Vallnord (AND) for the best Eliminator event.
Watch out for their easily distinguishable label.

DISCIPLINES INTRODUCTION
CROSS-COUNTRY OLYMPIC (XCO):
Cross-country Olympic format races are held over undulating circuits (with technical descents, forest roads,
rocky paths and obstacles) of 4 to 6 km, which riders must complete several times. The Elite racing times, for
men and women, vary from 1h 30 minutes to 1h 45 minutes. An attractive course design must ideally use the
venue in a form of a clover leaf.
CROSS-COUNTRY ELIMINATOR (XCE):
As with 4X, after a qualifying round, the cross-country eliminator sees four riders compete against each other in
each heat. The two fastest go on the next round. The short eliminator courses require speed, technical skill and
strength. This format appears for the first time on the World Championships program in 2012.
DOWNHILL (DHI):
Downhill is a race against the clock in which the rider negotiates a succession of fast and technical passages.
The participant must demonstrate courage as well as sharp technical and piloting skills in order to affront tree
roots, banked sections, bumps, jumps and other natural obstacles along the way.

NEARLY 2 MILLION SPECTATORS ON THE INTERNET
The number of on-line spectators of the UCI
Mountain Bike World Cup reached a new record in 2013, with 1.93 million visitors to the
website of Red Bull Media House, the UCI’s
official media partner. The live videos were
clearly the most popular, with 1.26 million
views registered.
This represents a progression of 34.28% compared with the 1.44 million views registered in 2012, the year that the new media coverage was
launched.
The video content is free of charge and accessible all over the world.
As in 2012, the downhill speciality recorded the most views (1.05 million).
All the mountain bike formats registered a clear progression: +104.7%
for cross-country eliminator (with two extra rounds compared with 2012),
+41.72% for Cross-country Olympic (despite one event less) and +22.9% for
downhill (despite one event less).
The World Cup round in Val di Sole (Italy) was the most watched, with
361’370 visitors on the Internet.
competitions with 144’927 views, narrowly in front of Nové Město in the
Czech Republic (140’312 views). Albstadt was also the most sought after by
cross-country eliminator fans with 49’940 views.
Internet video coverage of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup is booming. It
aims to satisfy the fans who are unable to travel to the events and to help a
new public discover the discipline. The project is possible thanks to a partnership signed in 2012 between the UCI and Red Bull Media House (RBMH).
The coverage has registered a progression not only in the number of spectators but in the quality of the broadcasts: the UCI and RBMH are constantly
working to achieve a more dynamic and innovative coverage.
UCI Commercial Manager Nicole Gruber estimates: “Product development
is still a key factor of our cooperation with Red Bull Media House. It is about
bringing the action and speed of the races across to our fans. Not only are the
number and type of cameras of importance, but also the way of filming and
creating editorial, because story telling of the races makes a real difference.”
“At Red Bull Media House, we love challenges, and the challenge of being
the UCI’s exclusive production partner and online broadcaster in 2013 was an
exciting one: eight events in eight countries covering three disciplines,” says
the Red Bull Media House Production Team.

Fort William (Great Britain), voted best downhill event of the 2013 World
Cup, is also Number 1 on the Internet for this speciality, with 235’357 views.

TEAMS
A record 31 countries have registered at least
one team, compared with 27 last year and 24
in 2012. New Zealand and Lesotho have registered a UCI Mountain Bike for the first time.
In total, 124 teams have been registered (81 for XC, 36 for DHI and 7 for XC &
DHI). Of these, 15 endurance (cross-country) and 15 gravity (downhill) teams
will obtain UCI ELITE Mountain Bike status. This is a higher tier of teams
which benefit from various advantages including free entry to race of the UCI
Mountain Bike International Calendar. These teams are obliged to enter at
least one rider in all rounds of the 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano.
Invitations to obtain UCI ELITE Mountain Bike status were issued to the top
teams of a special ranking which was established on the basis of the individual UCI points won in 2013 by the best riders of the 2014 teams.
