Success Story – Antranette
Antranette was referred to the WHC from Family Recovery Program in July 2009
and resides at The Susanna Wesley House. Upon arrival she reunified with her now 3
year old son D and is a mother of four children. Antranette came into the WHC with
a set of goals of her own. She was already linked to numerous programs and utilized
all of her resources. Antranette expressed an interest in becoming a Certified Nursing
Assistant, but first she needed to obtain a high school diploma. After overcoming
several challenges to pursue this goal, in November 2009, she enrolled in The Workforce Technology Center for GED classes where she took the GED Practice Test. She
scored at passing levels in all areas but needed some review of essay writing and math
skills. Antranette requested and received a brush-up in both areas and took the official GED test in May 2010. She did very well on her individual test but she did not get the total score or the average required. She
went back to WTC to review math and science, her two lowest scoring subjects and retested in those areas in September and earned
her diploma. Antranette received her High School Diploma and numerous academic awards at her graduation on November 18,
2010. She is doing volunteer work at Department of Social Services and Our Daily Bread. Furthermore, she completed training
classes in Phlebotomy and is employed part-time as a sales associate. Meanwhile, she has plans to go to college to take classes in
medical billing and coding and pursue her vocational goal of becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.
From the Director
Dear Friends:
It’s hard to believe that 2010 has come and gone–I can’t
remember when a year has gone by so quickly! 2010 was
a great year for the Women’s Housing Coalition because
of the support of so many donors, our great Board of
Directors, and passionate staff.
In the last edition of the newsletter, we told you about
our partnership with People’s Community Health Center
and the services they will be providing to our residents in
our new Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Wellness Suite at
the Margaret Bennett House. We are also excited about
the new Workforce Development Initiative. Through a
partnership with Swan Consulting, our residents will be
assessed for readiness for the workforce, and via a formal
process, will receive training for their needs and placed in
jobs that pay a living wage.
Finally, we hope you’ll mark your calendars for our 30+1
Celebration at Pazo Restaurant on May 9, 2011 from 6
until 9 p.m. We are thrilled to be going back to Pazo; our
30th Anniversary celebration was a tremendous success and
enjoyed by all of our guests. I encourage you to purchase
your tickets early, as this party will sell out!!
Have a warm rest of the winter, and we hope to see you in
the Spring!
All the best,
Joann Levy
Executive Director
Beginning with this edition and going forward, we highlight some of the accomplishments of WHC residents.
We think you will be excited to learn of the amazing
things our residents are doing.
Case Managers of the WHC
A Very Heart Felt Thank You
“A case manger accepts the facts that working in this field will never make you rich, in
terms of personal finance, although the rewards associated with knowing you have made
a genuinely positive difference in a person’s
life are priceless.”
– P. Pryor
On behalf of all the women and children, we would like to
thank the following people and organizations for providing
them with Thanksgiving meals, Christmas presents and winter
wear. We are ever so grateful and would not have been able to
provide any of this with out your generosity. Thank you does
not express our gratitude.
The WHC has 5 case managers who possess skills, experience, and education required to provide services throughout the health care continuum in a knowledgeable and
principle manner.
The WHC Case Managers’ advocate for client’s well being
through a collaborative process of assessments, planning,
facilitation and goal setting: utilizing all available resources
to meet the clients needs, and assisting them in achieving
their goals in a cost effective and timely manner. Case
Managers assist in identifying appropriate service providers
and facilities so that the client reaches optimum levels of
wellness and functional capability; as well as assisting the
client to improve quality of life, develop self-sufficiency,
maximize independence, and achieve residential stability.

She Matters Leadership Camp
A Perfect Combination
PROM NIGHT!!!
“SHE MATTERS mission is to inspire, cater to, and showcase female
accomplishments.”
One of the most exciting events in a girl’s life. Two of
WHC’s beautifully vibrant and very much exited Scattered Sites’ teenagers shared in an experience of a lifetime.
Sixteen year-old Tyneaka H. invites her sister, Seventeen
year-old Shakia P. to join her in a night of high school
bliss as they get all dolled up for the Forest Park High
School Jr. Prom. Wearing different styled black and yellow dresses, high heals, and big smiles, the girls shared
and enjoyed a memorable evening.
“What an Experience”
A young leader of the Susanna Wesley House, Bria J. was chosen
to participate in “She Matters Leadership Camp this year at Towson University. Bria took a week off of her summer job to explore
a new challenge. The program offered activities such as outdoor
team-building, crafts, group projects, creative writing, public
speaking, networking with local leaders, study skills, and other
events to aid in building leadership.
Jacqueline P. the pair’s Mom, experienced a reflective
moment as she watched her now two young ladies put on
make-up and funky dresses. Jacqueline, a Scattered Sites
participant has conquered extremely challenging obstacles
as she worked her way through incomprehensible barriers in an attempt to rebuild her and her children’s lives.
Jacqueline came to the WHC in 2005, regained custody
of her two daughters in 2006, and has managed to rear
her then two little girls into the now two vivacious young
ladies. Through determination, hard work, and program
compliance, Jacqueline is now the proud parent of one
high school graduate and another to soon follow.
Congratulations to this extraordinary family; what a
perfect combination!
To: Ms. Eleanor Fried, Senior Program Director & The
Women’s Housing Coalition
I am very thankful for the opportunity to attend “SHE MATTERS” leadership camp of Towson University. I had a chance to
meet other young ladies who opened my eyes to career possibilities, high school choices and different views on important life
lessons. We discussed peer pressure, leadership, and self esteem
to name a few. I really enjoyed the experience and I am looking
forward to attending college after high school. Towson University
is very high on my list.
Thank you once again and hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to
attend next year.
Sincerely,
Bria, 12 yrs old
Resident at the SWH
The Beginnings of the Margaret J. Bennett House
Originally a private home for The Douglas H. Gordon Family, the Gordon estate sold the home to a group of trustees, which was purchased for
$22,500, in the late 1800’s. At the direction of Margaret J. Bennett who
was a trustee at a similar home for boys. The trustees planned to renovate
the home to provide housing for women in the Baltimore area. Ms. Bennett had seen the accomplishments that the home for boys provided and
wanted to see the same for the women in the community. The renovation
was executed by trustee B. F. Bennett at a cost of $20,000, which included
the addition of a fourth floor. The home housed forty-four women and was
furnished for $5000.00 which was provided by Mary Patterson, sister of
Margaret Bennett. The first floor was finished with mahogany throughout,
with the reaming floors finished in white wood and tile flooring.
Margaret Bennett, the wife of B. F. Bennett passed away in August 1900. In
her will she left $150,000 for the founding and maintenance of the home.
In her honor the home was dedicated the Margaret J. Bennett Home, as it is
still called today.
The Bennett House was completed in early 1903 and formally dedicated on
April 2, 1903. During the dedication the President of the board of trustees,
Richard Price spoke of Ms. Bennett’s vision for the house stating “the girls
must believe in work and aid us by their contributions, however so small: to maintain their home will be regulated. We hope
to have those who dwell within these walls vie with us in the pride of home, so that no deserving one will be turned away so as
long a we have a place for her to stay.”
The Bennett housed women between the ages of 14 and 40 and who made less than $6.00 a week.
The Bennett House of today continues with the vision of Margaret J. Bennett; to provide housing to low-income women and
have those women who reside in the program to take pride in the place that they live which can in turn allow them to take
pride in themselves and allow them to accomplish all that they desire.
