Our museums tell the story of Borders people from the earliest times to the present day; their struggles, their homes, their work, and their leisure; from Border Reivers to Coldstream Guards; from the life of a 17th century laird to that of a prisoner in a 19th century jail; from textile mills to an ironmonger’s shop and from the waters of a health spa to Common Riding celebrations. They also explore the lives of the famous such as Mary Queen of Scots, Sir Walter Scott, Jim Clark and Jimmie Guthrie. Four of the museums house art galleries which host a wide and varied programme of contemporary visual art and craft exhibitions. Admission is FREE to all Museums. Hi gh Ba nk St M 4 Visit Old Gala House, an important and vibrant museum nestled in the heart of the bustling Borders town of Galashiels. Learn the story of this historic house and the development of the town. Dating back to 1583, this impressive building has seen over 400 years of activity and bears the fascinating traces of historic change: the painted, wooden-panelled ceiling dating from 1635 is a rare survival in Scotland, and it compares wonderfully with the ornate 18th century plaster ceiling in an adjoining room. Other rooms carry displays and information on the history of the local area and its enterprising people. The house hosts temporary exhibitions, children’s events, tearoom, audio guide, gifts & souvenirs and gardens. Free car parking and partial wheelchair access with a stair lift to the exhibitions on the 1st floor. OLD GALA HOUSE – PRINGLE ROOM 2a Tue 15 March – Sat 30 April Up On The Roof Louise Carrie - 1 Using the Scottish Borders, Scottish Coastline and the Highlands as inspiration, Louise works with the medium of slate and wax. The magical process of wax melting onto heated slates has created works with beautiful shades of colour and texture. 2 Sat 7 May – Sun 19 June The Plant World on Paper David Stuart - 2, 2a David Stuart is captivated by the beauty and energy of the plant world. His simple line drawings are developed into monoprints, screenprints and paintings, with occasional straying into expressive abstraction. Sat 25 June – Sun 7 Aug Perennial Pathways Justine Miller - 3 Justine lives and works in Berwickshire where she explores the woodland environment and themes of the Scottish Borders. Having trained as a Printmaker she works photographically and digitally. She combines media with hand drawn and coloured images, layering of images, colours and textures to create a landscape of impression and emotion to capture intimate hidden glimpses and shadows. 3 4a 5 5 4b OLD GALA HOUSE – MUSEUM ROOM Tue 15 March – Sun 5 June Old Gala Club visits Galashiels Home Front in 1916. - 1 Learn about the historic town of Galashiels in 1916 and how it faced the challenges of the First World War in this fascinating exhibition of local newspaper cuttings, diary entries of a local newsagent, photographs and artefacts from the era. Sat 13 August – Sun 18 Sept Coastal Connection Deborah Campbell - 4, 4a, 4b The Coastal Connection Exhibition will present new work by artist Deborah Campbell. Through painting, print and textiles she develops works which are an expression of Scotland’s coastal landscape exploring the interaction of the land and sea. Sat 24 Sept – Sun 30 Oct Valley Reflections Pippa Sinclair - 5, 5a Inspired by her experience of living in the Yarrow Valley, Pippa’s collection of dynamic landscape paintings have textural and graphic elements. Her works use a variety of styles and techniques to portray the nature of her Scottish Border memories. 1 2 5a Sat 11 June – Sun 14 August Linear Rozee Colton - 2 A showcase of photographic portraits by Edinburgh College of Art 2016 graduate. Rozee constructs and manipulates images, to explore the relationship between photography and performance art. For Rozee within the image a performance exists only through viewer interpretation. 6 3 CHRISTOPHER BOYD GALLERY 1 NMS Mirror ‘Iron Age Balmaclellan mirror from the National Museums Scotland collection’ Sat 20 August – Sun 30 Oct St Abbs Woolscape Project Jennie Howes - 3, 3a The St Abbs Woolscape Project evolved in the summer/autumn of 2014 by bringing together creatively minded woolly folk, primarily at the St Abbs Visitor Centre. The aim of the project was to create, in wool, representations of the natural environment - the sea, the air and land in and around St Abbs. In conjunction with the display, the museum will host a series of woolly workshops – using techniques of knitting, crochet, felting and stitching -to create a “Gala Woolscape Project”, using yarns, fibres and textiles reclaimed from Borders businesses such as mills, weavers and knitters, to create all the pieces. Contact 01750 726456 for more information on workshops. 3a Tue 15 March – Sat 21 May Reflections on Celts - 1, 1a An educational and hands on exhibition showcasing two Iron Age mirrors the British Museum’s Holcombe mirror and the National Museums Scotland’s Balmaclellan mirror both telling very different stories, and helping us to understand the relationships between communities in Britain 2,000 years ago. The Reflections on Celts tour is generously supported by the Dorset Foundation. On show will be the art curator’s favourites including paintings by William Gillies, Tom Scott, William Johnstone, Horatio McCulloch and Alberto Morrocco, alongside recent bequests of works by Anne Redpath and her son David Michie. & Gallery Ante-Room Looking About Graham Stokes - 4 A mature graduate of Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, London, and former community art teacher now based in Galashiels who is fascinated by the everyday buildings and environments where most of us live. Sat 9 July – Sat 3 September Incantation Alfons Bytautas RSA - 2 Recent paintings, prints and drawings by an established artist born in Selkirk. A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, he has led important pioneer research on printmaking techniques. In 2006 he was appointed Academician to the Royal Scottish Academy. His abstract works are based on observation and memory and he says ‘I encourage myself to adopt, whenever possible, an irrational approach to image making and to welcome chance and accident as potential sources of inspiration. My aim is not to copy nature but to represent it as transformed by thought and emotion’. The building dates back over 400 years and makes a truly atmospheric museum situated in Halliwell’s Close just off the bustling Market Place. The Close has seen a lot of changes down the years, and these are engagingly reflected in the displays. The old ironmongers shop is reconstructed on the ground floor and is crammed full of related objects which evoke a bygone age. The internationally renowned Selkirk Common Riding is documented in a dedicated room on the first floor. This compact museum tells the story of the town’s ancient history with connections to William Wallace and the tragedy of Flodden as well as its more recent past. The project reflects the industrial heritage of the Borders and is kindly supported by donations of tweed and tartan from local textile mills. Award -winning photographer John Parris provides a backdrop to the show with stunning images of the students wearing their creations. This year the photo-shoot took place at Abbotsford House. Plac e Tower Street Mar ket 3 We ort st P Kirk wyn d 9 2 Sat 16 July – Sun 21 August Sea, Skye, Mountains and Hills Mary Goulden - 4 Landscape paintings by a Yorkshire-born artist who came to the Borders in the 1970s to further her nursing career. A keen hill walker, and with an artist’s sensibilities, she became inspired to interpret the beautiful Borders landscape. Pastel is her medium of choice, due to its tactile nature, intensity of colour and the range of effects it can produce. Also on show paintings from her many trips to the West Highlands and Isle of Skye. 4 Sat 16 April – Sun 29 May A Fairy Tale Life Andrew Lang - 2 To celebrate Selkirk’s Year of Literature, Halliwell’s House Museum is exploring the life of Selkirk’s local writer Andrew Lang and his stories and Fairy Tales from around the world. Come and see our flying carpet and enchanted forest inspired by the Fairy Tales of Andrew Lang. Sat 4 June – Sunday 10 July Dark Ruberslaw Geof Hickey - 3 Paintings by an Ancrum-based artist of a prominent landmark in the Scottish Borders – Ruberslaw. Now the craggy remains of an extinct volcano, the hill is an ever present sight from his studio window, even when lost in mist, rain and clouds and also a place of historical interest from the Iron Age through the Romans to the days of the Covenanters. The exhibition title comes from Scenes of Infancy written by the Denholm born, Scottish Romantic poet Dr John Leyden (1775-1811). Dark Ruberslaw, that lifts his head sublime, Rugged and hoary with the wrecks of time! 5 Sat 27 August – Sun 25 September Into the Woods Catriona Andrews, Eben Rautenbach, Kenneth McQueenie & Rob Sutherland - 5 A mixed media show of works celebrating the beauty of trees. From literal paintings and wildlife scenes burnt onto reclaimed wood to abstract sculptures made from driftwood and ceramic interpretations of trees - an enduring subject matter for artists highlighting the need to protect our natural environment for future generations. In this building Sir Walter Scott sat as Sheriff, dispensing justice to the town of Selkirk for nearly 30 years, until his death in 1832. Ettrick Terr This important, historic building dates from 1804 and stands in the bustling Market Place of this historic town, next to a major monument dedicated to Sir Walter. Inside, you can learn the story of his association with the town and browse permanent displays of personal objects that once belonged to the world-famous writer of great literary works that included Rob Roy and the Waverley novels. SCHOOLS PROGRAMME 2015 Primary & Secondary School Visits Broaden your exploration of Sir Walter Scott’s world with a visit to Sir Walter Scott’s Courtroom. A member of our staff will help your pupils discover for themselves what life was like in an 1800’s courtroom, by making them feel like they have stepped back in time. Focusing on crime, punishment, law and order, this is ideal for school parties as there are plenty of hands on activities designed to stimulate and educate keen young minds. For further information telephone 01721 724820. The Chambers Institution was established in 1859 by William Chambers, one of the founders of the famous publishing house. The Museum and Gallery currently present a lively programme of exhibitions in this historic building. The Chambers Room houses the extraordinary plasterwork friezes commissioned by William Chambers and also features exhibitions on Peebles and the surrounding area. CHAMBERS ROOM 3 Sat 9 January – Sat 21 May People of Peebles Who was the Peebles Poet? Discover this, the connection with the author of The 39 Steps, a prime minister who chopped down trees and many other weird and wonderful facts about this well-known Burgh. Sat 28 May – Sat 22 October Mapping the Collection Housing over 16,000 objects, the Chambers Institution has been collecting the material history of Peeblesshire for over 150 years. This exhibition uses some of the collection to illustrate the history of the area through its material culture. Sat 29 October – Sat 17 December 300 Years of Freemasonry in Peebles - 1 Reflecting on the past and celebrating the present activities of an active community organisation with Lodge Peebles, Kilwinning 24. Sat 4 June – Sat 23 July Treasures Found - 3 Fascinating items of Treasure Trove found in recent years in the Borders, Fife, Edinburgh and Lothian – Bronze Age, Roman and Medieval are displayed in this touring exhibition. The Treasure Trove legislation in Scotland ensures that objects of cultural importance from our past are protected for the benefit of the nation. Supported by the Art Fund and The Headley Trust and created by the East of Scotland Museums Partnership. MUSEUM ROOM Sat 19 March – Sat 28 May A Chequered History – Textiles in Tweeddale - 2 Textiles have been woven in the Peeblesshire area for thousands of years. This exhibition tells the story through photographs and objects from pre-history right up to the present day. 5 Sat 14 May Festival of Museums Spinning a Yarn! Join us on a day of activities and memories with former mill workers at an event to celebrate our textile heritage. 4 Sat 30 July – Sat 3 September Land and Sea - 4 Catriona Taylor’s painting is influenced by the Scottish landscape and seascape and also maps and poetry. Catriona is based in the Pentlands and she is strongly inspired by the hills. For this exhibition she explores themes suggested by words from the Shipping News to evoke a sense of our coastal landscape. 13 6 THE GALLERY TWEEDDALE MUSEUM Sat 12 March – Sat 16 April Wandering Threads - 1 Embroiderers’ Guild – Scottish Members Textile art celebrating 110 years of the Guild. A colourful display of traditional sewing techniques and modern interpretations. 1 Sat 10 September – Sat 26 November The Many Strands of Manor - 5 Discover this very special valley which yielded a Bronze Age hoard, where Queen Victoria almost bought her Scottish residence, and is the home of Olympic gold medal winner Scott Brash. It has inspired poets and artists to this day and the exhibition will include work by artist Irene Campbell amongst others. We will be organising activities around this exhibition as part of Borders Heritage Festival. Please contact us for details. Sat 5 December – Sat 29 April 2017 The Offensive Romans - 6 Is Burnswark Hill the site of a Roman training camp or a scene of bloody conflict between invading Romans and the native people of Southern Scotland? This question has puzzled archaeologists since the 18th century. An imposing table top hill in flat surroundings, Burnswark was first occupied 3000 years ago. It has been an important site throughout the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman occupation of Britain, the medieval period and the Civil War in the 17th century. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, a team of archaeologists carried out a dig in September 2015. Using modern methods of metal detecting and soil testing and with input from experts in the UK and Germany, new evidence is being presented to tell the story of Burnswark and the Roman invasion of Scotland. Sat 23 April – Sat 4 June Blooms - 2, 2a, 2b Tatyana Aplin, Isabell Buenz, Susan Bourne, Janet Cleghorn, Linda Foster, Emma Herdman Contemporary and traditional artworks celebrating flowers; from delicate botanical drawings to vibrant abstracts and paper sculptural forms. Also works from Scottish Borders Council Fine Art Collection including Elizabeth Blackadder, Bernat Klein and Anne Redpath. 2 Sat 11 June – Sat 9 July Peebles Art Group - 3 The annual show of recent work by members and invited artists. 4 14 Sat 16 July –Sat 27 August The Summer Show - 4, 4a, Niall Campbell, Vivienne Haig, Lida Hatrick, Ellen McCann, Line Mortensen & Mooie Scott An eclectic mix of contemporary paintings, sculptures and glass by invited artists from across the Scottish Borders and stunning mosaics from an Edinburgh based artist bringing a splash of seasonal colour to the gallery. Sat 3 September – Sat 15 October Just Before the Light - 5 Ade Adesina A Nigerian-born printmaker, and graduate of Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen whose practice focuses on the human footprint and its effect on our planet. He says ‘Our world is full of wonderful landscapes and I wish to highlight the continual damage caused by deforestation; the politics of energy consumption; and endangered wild species.’ In 2014 he was a Royal Scottish Academy Generation artist - a national event which celebrated the best art in Scotland from the past 25 years. In 2015 he won an award from the Royal Academy Summer Show in London. He is currently Artist in Residence at the Highland Print Studio in Inverness. 6 5 Sat 29 October – Sat 4 March 2017 Naked Craft - 6, 6a Contemporary Craft from Canada and Scotland Sarah Alford, Jilli Blackwood, Tess Burrows, Martin Campbell, Jennifer Cantwell, Susan Collett,Caroline Dear, Jen Deschenes, Michael Hosaluk, Joanne B Kaar, Jeanette Sendler, Beth Legg, John Little, Amanda McCavour, Nicola Mainville, Kevin Morris, Aaron Nelson, Clint Neufield, Claudio Pino, Amelie Proulx, Amanda Simmons, Kari Woo Craft traditions which reach across the Atlantic connecting Canada and Scotland. Highlighting the similarities and differences between traditional and contemporary craft practices in the two countries, ten makers from Scotland, and twelve from Canada, work to set themes in a broad spectrum of media including: ceramic, glass, jewellery, metalwork, textile and wood. All reinforcing the idea of community that underpins craft and drawing attention to the economic importance of the craft sector. The origins of the unique Cleikum Ceremonies held in July are also explained. The adjoining gardens provide a lovely area to relax, with picnic areas amid local sculptures. Throughout 2016 the St Ronan’s Wells Visitor Centre is working in partnership with The National Trust for Scotland to mark the 150th anniversary of Robert Smail’s Printing Works in Innerleithen. Wells Brae, INNERLEITHEN EH44 6JL t. 01896 833583 Damside Hosted at St. Ronan’s Wells Visitor Centre, Future/Past tells the fascinating history of Robert Smail’s Printing Works from its foundation to the present day. Visitors to the exhibition will have an opportunity to see parts of the collections that have never been on public display and discover new stories about the Printing Works and the Smail family. Janet’s epic, 69-day cycle tour of Scotland took place in 2015. Over the 774 mile journey she gave 23 workshops, met unique individuals and cycled past memorable Scottish landmarks, recording it all by hand in textiles. Sat 12 November – January 2017 Needles and Compasses - 8 Lindsay Roberts Original art works inspired by Islamic pattern forms. Artist Lindsay Roberts worked with Muslim textile makers in India and since then she has explored and experimented with fascinating ancient geometric designs used in Islamic art and architecture.
