Live Borders is a registered Charity No.SCO34227
We hope you will enjoy this year’s programme
of exhibitions presented in thirteen museums
and visitor centres across the Scottish Borders.
Our museums tell the story of Borders people
from the earliest times to the present day; their
struggles, their homes, their work, and their
leisure; from Border Reivers to Coldstream
Guards; from the life of a 17th century laird to
that of a prisoner in a 19th century jail; from
textile mills to an ironmonger’s shop and from
the waters of a health spa to Common Riding
celebrations. They also explore the lives of the
famous such as Mary Queen of Scots, Sir Walter
Scott, Jim Clark and Jimmie Guthrie.
Four of the museums house art galleries
which host a wide and varied programme of
contemporary visual art and craft exhibitions.
Admission is FREE to all Museums.

Visit Old Gala House, an important and vibrant
museum nestled in the heart of the bustling
Borders town of Galashiels. Learn the story of this
historic house and the development of the town.
Dating back to 1583, this impressive building
has seen over 400 years of activity and bears the
fascinating traces of historic change: the painted,
wooden-panelled ceiling dating from 1635 is a rare
survival in Scotland, and it compares wonderfully
with the ornate 18th century plaster ceiling in an
adjoining room. Other rooms carry displays and
information on the history of the local area and its
enterprising people.
The house hosts temporary exhibitions, children’s
events, tearoom, audio guide, gifts & souvenirs and
gardens. Free car parking and partial wheelchair
access with a stair lift to the exhibitions on the 1st
floor.

St Abbs Woolscape Project
Jennie Howes - 3, 3a
The St Abbs Woolscape Project evolved in the
summer/autumn of 2014 by bringing together
creatively minded woolly folk, primarily at the
St Abbs Visitor Centre. The aim of the project
was to create, in wool, representations of the
natural environment - the sea, the air and land
in and around St Abbs.
In conjunction with the display, the museum
will host a series of woolly workshops – using
techniques of knitting, crochet, felting and
stitching -to create a “Gala Woolscape Project”,
using yarns, fibres and textiles reclaimed from
Borders businesses such as mills, weavers and
knitters, to create all the pieces.

Fri March 25 – Mon October 31
Mon – Sat 11-4, Sun 12 – 3
Halliwell’s House Museum is housed in the
oldest surviving row of dwellings in Selkirk.
The building dates back over 400 years and
makes a truly atmospheric museum situated
in Halliwell’s Close just off the bustling Market
Place. The Close has seen a lot of changes down
the years, and these are engagingly reflected
in the displays. The old ironmongers shop
is reconstructed on the ground floor and is
crammed full of related objects which evoke a
bygone age.
The internationally renowned Selkirk Common
Riding is documented in a dedicated room
on the first floor. This compact museum tells
the story of the town’s ancient history with
connections to William Wallace and the tragedy
of Flodden as well as its more recent past.

The Offensive Romans - 6
Is Burnswark Hill the site of a Roman training
camp or a scene of bloody conflict between
invading Romans and the native people of
Southern Scotland? This question has puzzled
archaeologists since the 18th century. An
imposing table top hill in flat surroundings,
Burnswark was first occupied 3000 years ago.
It has been an important site throughout the
Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman occupation of
Britain, the medieval period and the Civil War in
the 17th century.
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, a
team of archaeologists carried out a dig in
September 2015. Using modern methods of
metal detecting and soil testing and with input
from experts in the UK and Germany, new
evidence is being presented to tell the story of
Burnswark and the Roman invasion of Scotland.
