AN INTRODUCTION TO SUBLIMATION...
What do you need to get started?
What is sublimaon?
Sublimaon is the technology of transferring your design/image from your pc to your
polyester (coated) substrate.
The inks of your printed image will be converted into a gas and will bond with the substrate under influence of pressure & heat.

When you wonder what’s so special about sublimaon,
the answer will easily be: polyester. Polyester is what
makes the difference between Sublimaon, and Transfer. In Transfer prinng, the colours are on top of your
material, in Sublimaon, they are INSIDE the material.
Soware
If you’re not a great designer, a program like ‘Subliso’ will be an ideal and cost effecve
soluon for small sublimaon businesses.
Designer programs as Corel Draw, or Adobe’s Photoshop are also perfect for sublimaon
but less user friendly. Install your colour profile and you can print any design you make.

Printers
Sublimaon inks need an inkjet printer, most of the me an Epson. Inkjet printers spray
their inks through lile nozzles which tend to clog easily because of the thick sublimaon
inks. Due to their advanced printer head technology, print density and low cost, Epson
printers are most common in sublimaon. (p. 10)
Presses
Any heat press that can reach the temperature of nearly 200 °C is suitable for sublimaon. There are different presses for different purposes.
Flatbed presses for flat objects, mug presses, cap presses, ... (p. 6)
Paper
Don’t use regular prinng paper while sublimang! Sublimaon paper has an other structure than the smooth paper you normally use. The paper has to absorb as much sublimaon ink as possible to be able to ensure a piercingly sharp image. (p. 20)
How do they get in there?
Inks
Polyester is as your skin: it has pores. These pores react
to heat. When heang the polyester under your press,
the pores will open.
At that moment the ink bonds with the polyester.
When the pores close again, the colour is trapped inside the material. Just try scratching the surface...
Substrates (base material)
The inks play an important part aswell in the sublimaon process. Sublimaon inks aren’t regular inkjet inks,
they’re dyes. The sublimaon dyes also react to the
heat of your press. From the vast state on the paper
they will turn immediately into a gaz, without becoming liquid first. Being a gaz, they vercally fly into the
open pores of the heated polyester... and get trapped...
Sublimaon inks aren’t regular inkjet inks you normally use with your Epson printer, they
are in fact dyes rather than inks. The fluid in the cartridges is mainly a carrier, that stays
on the paper when the dye migrates from the paper to the substrate. (p. 16)
As explained before, sublimaon is all about polyester. This means that any polyester, or
polyester coated object can be used for sublimaon. These substrates are not accidentally
chosen materials, they are chosen because of their charachteriscs and the way they
react to high temperatures. We don’t want our objects to melt under the press...
Base materials can be coated MDF, Aluminum, FRP, Hardboard; but also texles, coated
ceramics, etc. (p. 26)

Specifically created for use on a large or small press. Jigs
allow for mulple Unisub® products to be
sublimated in one swi moon. The large jigs are made
out of moisture-resistant MDF for Unisub® products including ChromaLuxe® photo panels.
The small jig fixtures may contain a two or three part kit.
Specific kits include aluminum skeleton, a leveling pad
(for FRP products only) and one MDF moisture resistant
backer panel. These create the perfect recipe for increased
producvity!

HOW TO SUBLIMATE ...
CHROMALUXETM HINGED PAIRS
1
1) Remove the protecve film
Start at a corner and peel the protecve film
off. Carefully pull the lied edge between your
fingers towards the opposite corner.
Tip: Placing the panel under a heat
press for 3 to 5 seconds will make the
film easier to remove.

CHROMALUXETM PANELS WITH EASEL
1
Open the package of hinges supplied in
the box. Posion all hinges shiny side face up.
Tip: Items can be pressed seperately or hinged
together.
2) Inserng the hinges
Insert one hinge into the top slot as shown in
picture #2. Repeat the process for the boom
slot. Be sure to push the hinges into the slotted areas completed straight.

3) Sublimate
You should now be able to sublimate the part.
We recommend 60-70 seconds at about 200
°C and medium [firm] clamp pressure.
Tip: Allow product to cool flat before standing.
3) Merging the panels
When aaching the 2nd panel, align the
hinges with the slots and push the parts together as shown in picture #3.

4) Final product
The completed photo panel products should
resemble picture #4. If the parts do not sit
even on a surface, carefully pull the panel
down unl both parts are level.

2) Posion and tape the transfer
Lay the transfer face up on a flat clean surface. Place the part’s surface down on the
transfer. Center the part in the transfer so
there is an equal amount of bleed on all
edges. While holding the part down with
one hand, grab one end of the transfer and
fold it towards the center of the part. Tape
the edge to the back of the part and repeat
the process for the opposite side. Your part
with transfer should look like step 2.

Storing finished products
Special care must be taken when storing or
packaging finished sublimated products. If
sublimated pieces are placed in direct
contact with other sublimated materials or
with any type of synthec material, the inks
will migrate from the sublimated piece to
the synthec material over me.

SHEET STOCK FIBERBOARD/MDF - PHENOLIC
Medium-density fiberboard (MDF or MDFB) is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down sowood into wood fibers, combining it with wax and resin,
and forming panels by applying high temperature and
pressure. It is a building material similar in applicaon to
plywood but made of seperated fibers, not wood veneers. It is denser than normal praccle board.

Gloss w/ clear filled back
1,27 mm (.050”) phenolic resin substrate. Available in
mae or gloss finish, coated on one side only. Phenolic
sheet is a hard, dense material made by applying heat
and pressure to layers of paper or glass cloth impregnated with synthec resin. These layers of laminaons
are usually of cellulose paper, coon fabrics, synthec
yarn fabracs, glass fabrics or unwoven fabrics. When heat
and pressure are applied to the layers, a chemical reacon (polymerizaon) transforms the layers into a highpressure thermoseng industrial laminated plasc.
