Message from the Board Chair & President
As the Arts Council looks back on 2013, we will remember it as a year of planning
and preparing for the future. After the strategic planning process was finalized
during 2013, we revised our mission and values statement to remember the past
and chart a path for the coming years.
Our mission is to provide vision and leadership to support thriving and
diverse arts in the Mid-Hudson Valley.
We value the abundant presence of art in the Mid-Hudson Valley and its
ability to uplift, empower, and engage. We honor diversity and celebrate
creativity. We are committed to playing a central role in
supporting and promoting all the arts in the communities we serve.
When the Arts Council was founded in 1964, the community volunteers who
envisioned an organization to serve the local arts and culture never dreamed it
would go beyond Dutchess County. Twenty-five years ago, the Dutchess County
Arts Council was asked to administer the New York State Council on the Arts
funding in Ulster County, and eight years ago, the Ulster County Legislature
asked that the Arts Council administer funds for Ulster County arts organizations.
During 2012, the New York State Council on the Arts, in an effort to regionalize
their funding distribution, asked the Arts Council to take on Orange County grants
administration, and during 2013 spring we began this work. In order to more
effectively serve the broader region we now support, including Dutchess, Ulster,
and Orange Counties, we have officially changed our name to Arts Mid-Hudson.
Paul Tesoro
Board Chairperson
During 2013, in preparation for our 50th Anniversary in 2014, and recognizing that
government and municipal funding is decreasing, we began planning ways to
become more sustainable through building our membership base and connecting
with a broader community. We have done this with the assistance and talents of
our active Board of Directors and staff, individual and business sponsors, and
volunteers throughout the region.
We will continue to showcase the arts in our region because the arts are more than
a diversion: they inform curious minds, uplift weary hearts, empower individuals,
strengthen communities and their local economies, and engage people from all
walks of life.
We thank you for your continued engagement. We are humbled by your trust in
our work, and we look forward to celebrating the 50th year of partnering with you.

Resource Development and Grant Making
The grant making and funding process is a major activity of Arts MidHudson. Staff and Board develop guidelines, market the opportunities
to the public, recruit community review panelists, oversee evaluation
and award allocations, as well as track funded programs to ensure
success. These competitive grants are awarded to individual artists,
schools, community groups, and arts organizations through seven
different categories: Partners in the Arts funding in Dutchess County,
Ulster County Cultural Services
& Promotion Awards, Project
Grants and Arts Education
Grants for Dutchess and Ulster
Counties, and Individual Artist
Fellowships. Funds for these programs come from the New York State
Council on the Arts, the County of Dutchess and the County of Ulster,
allowing Arts Mid-Hudson to distribute $155,617 to 67 organizations,
schools, libraries, artists, and community groups.
At the 27th Annual Dutchess County Executive’s Arts Awards, 8
honorees were recognized for their dedication to the Dutchess
County community through their work in the arts. Recipients include

Advocacy and Public Awareness
Since 1998, Arts Mid-Hudson has employed a part-time staff folklorist whose tasks include community outreach
and liaison work; providing technical assistance; documenting cultural
practices of the area’s occupational, ethnic, religious, cultural, and regional/
place-specific communities; maintaining the archive of documentation
materials; and organizing and producing educational cultural programs
and events. Through public programs and collaborations with community
organizations, the folklorist expands awareness our region’s rich cultural
heritage while also identifying topics for future research and presentation.

The goals of the Folk Arts Program are to document the traditional
practices in the community, provide technical assistance to grassroots and established community
organizations, and to foster an awareness of and appreciation for cultural diversity. The Folk Arts Program
is funded primarily by New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and the County of Dutchess, with
additional support in 2013 from Stewart’s Shops and the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley.
Unrestricted
In its second year, Queen City Arts Initiative is an advocacy project to foster artsdriven partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and residents. Events were
scheduled on the third Saturday of every month and included three outdoor block
party events, pop-up galleries, music, spoken word poetry, performance and dance,
serving over 3,150 residents and visitors to the City of Poughkeepsie. The
“Arts and Community Action” weekly networking meetings increased regional
community engagement with the arts, and were attended by over 750 during the year.
Arts Mid-Hudson markets our services through a variety of media,
including a weekly talk show on WKIP Radio’s “Hudson Valley

Mid-Hudson’s weekly email, which continued to increase active
subscribers in 2013 by 14%, to reach over 2,500 by year’s end.
Social media presence has continued to build with a combined
