Stephanie Rhoades, Conductor & Artistic Director Here it comes again—the holiday season. As soon as summer ends and auditions are over we begin preparing pieces for our performances in December. While it seems a little jarring to ring “Christmas” music before the autumnal equinox, in reality, it is usually fun. I love selecting music that I think will delight our audiences. The challenge is often editing—there are so many choices these days that I sometimes have to make several playlists and then whittle them down. The handbell community is blessed to have so many talented composers and arrangers that use a variety of techniques, incorporate additional instruments, or weave together several tunes imaginatively, that I often feel like I am playing a game of musical “Sudoku” to get the pieces to flow into a cohesive and satisfying program. This year, we will celebrate this cornucopia of holiday music with a “Feast of Carols.” You will hear some of your favorite carols prepared with some special seasoning. Among the selections are, “A Celtic Silent Night,” “Hark! The Herald Angels” in 7/8, and a lovely setting of “Greensleeves” with oboe and flute. There will be something for herbivores and omnivores during this musical feast! We look forward to seeing you in December! News from the Prez . . . . As we celebrate our 15th year we realize that we have acquired some interesting numerical trivia over the past 15 years. 1 – the number of auditions we have each year. 2 – the number of CDs we have for sale. (Hurry – we have very limited supply left of our first CD Holiday Favorites.) 13 – the number of Board Members that are not performers. 15 – the number of ringers currently in Concert Bells (plus 1 conductor). Page 2 46 – the total number of ring- 1998 – the year that ers that have been in CBFW including the current members. Concert Bells was formed. 76 – the number of concerts performed since our inception in 1998. 410 – the number of total 501c3 – the type of organization we are under the tax code. This means that any donations you make are tax deductible. Karen Thompson, President years of ringing experience in our ensemble. (Kathleen has the most experience at 35 years and Alys the least with 15.) 790 – the number of miles that we drive to and from rehearsal each week. That averages 49 miles round trip with Valerie being the closest at 10 miles and Quinda having the longest drive at 106 miles round trip. Volume 13, Issue 1 CBFW welcomes four new ringers this fall Alys Lindholm is a Japanese-English translator who specializes in visual media and works of fiction, but makes the occasional foray into death certificates, chemical safety, World War II enlistment papers, and other fun things. She’s been playing handbells since sometime in junior high when she crashed her church choir in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. She rang with the Ringers of Bryn Mawr in Pennsylvania and with the Houston Bronze Ensemble down in Houston, Texas before coming to ring with CBFW. Her motto is, “Make it more awesome.” Alys Lindholm Shari Gibson played her first handbell when she was in second grade. Twenty-five years later she is still ringing bells. She played in the Junior High, Senior High and Adult Jubilate bell choirs at Roseville Lutheran Church in Minnesota. Shari played in the handbell choir during her four years at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom with her son Tyler, Shari spent 10 years teaching first and second grade elementary students. Shari, her husband Matt, and their son Tyler moved to Texas in 2011. Ask her about her passion for photography. She has a collection of alphabet photographs to create framed first names, last names, college names, etc. Shari Gibson Lynn Tedford has been ringing handbells for over 20 years, having started when a church handbell director asked her to fill a gap to “finish out the season.” It was a trick to add another permanent bell ringer but she discovered a love for playing handbells. Music has always been her artistic outlet, singing and ringing in local community and church choirs, attending handbell clinics and festivals, and even a two year stint playing acoustic guitar and singing backup vocals in a Texas country band! Since she couldn’t figure out a way to “pay the rent” as a professional musician, her 28 year career as a public servant within the federal judicial system has been the next best thing. She and her husband Kirk enjoy traveling, sailing, and gardening. Lynn Tedford Alice Thompson has been ringing handbells since she was born. Some babies are given rattles but Alice was given bells. Alice grew up ringing in church under the direction of her mom, Karen Thompson, and is quite excited to be ringing alongside her handbell mentor in Concert Bells of Fort Worth. Growing up, Alice was an all-around gymnast, an accomplished flautist, and graduated from Richland High School in the top of her class. Alice is currently a Pre-Nursing student at the University of Texas at Arlington while working part-time as a skating carhop at Sonic. When not working, studying, or ringing, Alice enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Of late, however, we have come to think it better to buy supplements to what we can borrow from Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, rather than purchasing equipment that duplicates what is available there. Over the next few years, we hope to be able to get several items: the upper 6th-octave bells (the set we borrow goes to the top of the 5th octave), a bell-tree stand, and some more bass chimes. Exactly what we get and in what order depends on your generosity. Priced individually: 7 chimes (C2 to F#2): $760 each 3 cases: $230 each Rack for lower 7th octave chimes: $500 Case for chime rack: $235 2 lambswool mallets: $76 each Shipping: $366 TOTAL: $7,263 Package price: $6,260 Shipping: $366 TOTAL: $6,626 Chimes cannot be labeled individually, but an engraved plate for the set would cost $35. These are our current desires, with prices: Upper 6th octave bells 7 bells (C#8 through G8): $246 each 1 case: $115 Personalized handle inscriptions (naming the donor, for instance): Free Shipping: $25 TOTAL: $1,902 In all cases, shipping charges are approximate, and equipment prices are current but can be expected to rise over time. Can you help us obtain any of this equipment? Donations to the Wish List Fund would be greatly appreciated! Jean Harden, Treasurer Bell tree stand $299 + Shipping: $16 TOTAL: $315 One wish granted! The D8 from the wish list above was recently purchased by the Rick Thompson family (Rick, Karen, Alice, and Helen) in memory of their dear friend, Cora Latta. CBFW gratefully accepts this gift from the Thompson family. Thank you! The Concert Bells of Fort Worth cordially invites you to a musical feast with all the trimmings. This year we’re spicing up the menu for a banquet everyone can sit down at: a flavorful spread of traditional staples and reinvented delights, arranged for handbells and seasoned with violin, flute, oboe, and a few surprises. Features classics like the Ukrainian Bell Carol as well as a Celtic twist on Silent Night, a Jingle Bells that’s jangled well off the rails, and more.
