The schools are engaging in a friendly competition again this year to see which institution can donate the most money and items for the food bank. The school raising the most will receive a traveling trophy that will be handed off to next year's winner. MCC came in a very close second to Baker College last year. A host of MCC administrators, staff and students were on hand to represent the college at a Nov. 28 press conference held at the Food Bank headquarters to kick off the annual holiday campaign. People attending the MCC Women's and Men's Basketball games on Wednesday, Nov. 28 were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, canned goods or personal care items to be dropped off at the game for the Holiday Food Drive. In addition, a portion of the admission proceeds at the game were contributed to the effort. "It was with great pleasure that we were able to generate $1,000 for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan," said Men's Basketball Coach Steve Schmidt. One of our student/athletes, Alvin Pegues, was involved in a group project in his Marketing class and worked in conjunction with our athletic department on this fundraiser. We often take for granted how fortunate we are and it is great to give back to people less fortunate. I would like to thank our loyal fans for their support with this project." MCC Public Safety staff members will be going around campus collecting monetary donations from 9:30 am to 11:30 am on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 6 and 7. In addition to cash donations, suggested food drive items include non-perishable foods such as canned goods, baking mixes, pastas, sauces, cereals, spices and personal care products such as shampoo, soap, deodorant and toilet paper. The Holiday Food Drive will run through Dec. 14. Collection bins are located in strategic locations throughout campus: Prahl College Center Public Safety Mini-Station; Student Life Center; Public Safety Department lobby; Regional Technology Center lobby; Continuing Education Office; Ballenger Field House, Mott Middle College main office in the Mott Memorial Building and at the following MCC extension locations: Lapeer, Northern Tier (Clio) and Southern Lakes Branch Center. "We had another successful and very fun art auction this year – A Treasure Chest of Art. I may be a little slow counting and reporting numbers, but we swagged over $4,500. We enjoyed the highest attendance at this year’s event with over 125 guests, purchasing 94 pieces of art. The auction was held at the Mott Library for the first time. I would like to thank Denise Hooks, Kathleen Goodrow and all the staff at the Mott library for making this a fantastic, shipshape venue. Thanks also to everyone at the Mott Events office, Facilities and the friendly folks at Ed Systems. The swashbuckler Bill Reich and the many Friends’ mateys volunteered and helped in innumerable ways. A big hearty thanks again to all the college staff and community members that attended. Hispanic Outlook Applauds MCC for Successful Outreach to Hispanics For the sixth year in a row, Mott Community College has received recognition from The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine for providing an environment where Hispanic students can "thrive and persist." MCC made the magazine's "2007 Publisher's Picks" – a list of colleges and universities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico cited for maintaining a staunch commitment to recruiting, educating and graduating Hispanic students. "The big picture: Hispanic enrollment in higher education – the actual headcount – increased immensely over the last decade – far more than that of any other racial/ethnic minority," stated Hispanic Outlook publisher Jose Lopez-Isa in the Nov. 19, 2007 issue of the magazine, which was sent to 3,500 high school counselors in addition to regular subscribers. "That is splendid news, and our institutions deserve applause for accommodating and enabling that increase. The sheer number of Hispanics persisting to graduation and earning degrees is rising and very heartening, especially when graduation represents a family first. The positive ripple effects of college graduation are well documented." Considered a major information news source for the higher education community, The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education is in its 18th year of covering events, news and ongoing trends that affect multicultural institutions. Based in Paramus, N.J., the Hispanic Outlook is published bi-weekly, or 25 times a year.
