Symphony in C, created for the Paris
Opéra Ballet in 1947 under the title Le Palais

and virtuosic, all flash and dazzle. It drew
heavily on the vast financial and artistic
resources of that acclaimed company at a

and a minuscule costume budget. Like most
of Balanchine’s works, it follows the music
closely and perceptively – in this case, the
long-lost score of the 17-year-old Bizet’s
unpublished first symphony, rediscovered
only in 1935 – allowing us, as Balanchine
always wished, to “see the music, hear the
dancing.”

arranged planned gifts that will extend beyond their lifetimes.
These planned gifts, such as bequests in wills or gifts of life
insurance, will support a legacy of great dance for generations
to come.
Celia Franca, a highly acclaimed British dancer and
choreographer when she was invited to Canada, founded The
National Ballet of Canada in 1951 and through 24 seasons
nurtured its development into a Canadian cultural treasure.
Today the National Ballet pays tribute to her vision, tenacity
and passion by naming the society of dedicated and visionary
donors in her honour.
All planned gifts are directed to the Endowment Foundation
which provides a steady and predictable source of income to the
National Ballet. Individuals who invest in great dance through
their financial planning or estate preparation can benefit from
significant tax advantages today while celebrating the artistry of
the National Ballet and its legacy of excellence. Through the Celia
Franca Society, the National Ballet expresses its gratitude to
these generous donors with special recognition and events.

dance, it stays with you forever. It’s in your blood.”
Linda describes her work with the National Ballet as extremely rewarding and a great
opportunity to get involved with a “fantastic organization that has really come into its own.” She
admires the hard work and dedication of our performers and remarks that with Karen Kain as
Artistic Director the company brings both contemporary programming and classical repertoire to
each season, “providing such a great opportunity to showcase the versatility of its dancers.” She
explains that one of the greatest rewards of working with the ballet is getting to meet many of the
talented dancers on our roster, who she describes as “such interesting, intelligent and articulate
people. I really enjoy spending time with them and getting to know them on a personal level.”
On her appointment as Chair of the Esprit de Corps programme, Linda reflects, “I’m so proud
of the work we do as a committee. The Esprit de Corps is involved in hosting innovative events
to attract a new and younger audience, which is such a perfect fit for me, since I’m passionate
about expanding the reach of the ballet and bringing our wonderful performances to new
audiences.”
