CASE STUDY
CONTRACT: B&Q Superstore, Wigan
CONTRACT PERIOD: 33 weeks
CLIENT: Keir North West
START DATE: July 2003
Construction of a new 36,000m2 superstore for B&Q,
incorporating Rapid Impact Compaction foundation
design, on a brown field site.
The site is situated close to the River Douglas and hence
an 8,000m3 flood attenuation system was constructed
using approximately 2,500m of 2.00m and 1.50m
diameter turbosider pipes, sitting only 500mm below
finished car park level. At the time of construction this
was the largest turbosider system in Europe. Linked to
this was associated Larsen piled in-situ concrete
headwalls and pumping station.
Permanent protection to a high-pressure gas main was
also required, in the form of a cantilevered concrete slab.
The project also included a 6,800m2 car park, 9,200m2
brush finished slabs for the garden centre, builder’s yard
and service yard slab, and hard landscaping. The
contract was finished on time, to the satisfaction of
client, through an adverse winter period.

The Investors in People award gives us a framework to ensure that

As an integral part of our Investors in People status, we strive to
ensure that our employees receive on going training both on an off
site, and internally and externally, with regular appraisals.
This may range from site inductions to job specific training, encouraging
employees to achieve qualifications in their chosen fields while gaining
and enhancing experience in the field. Working closely with the CITB,
we are able to offer a wide range of training to all our employees.
Company policy is to achieve complete CSCS attainment for all
